1. Maternal Bean Consumption during Pregnancy: Distribution and Nutritional Outcomes

Abstract: (1) Background: Due to their high nutritional value, we aimed to characterize the frequency and amount of maternal consumption of beans during pregnancy and their associations with diet quality and nutrient intake. (2) Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis of US pregnant women (n = 1444) from the Infant Feeding Practices Study II, a longitudinal study that followed mother–infant pairs from late pregnancy to 1 year postpartum. Maternal bean intake (food types [dried beans, chili, and bean soup], frequency, serving size, and amount), diet quality (Healthy Eating Index [HEI]), and nutrient intake were estimated with a Food Frequency Questionnaire taken in the third trimester of pregnancy. Associations of bean consumption with diet quality and nutrient intake were examined with analysis of variance, Fisher’s least significant difference tests, correlation coefficients, and coefficients of determination. (3) Results: In general, maternal bean consumption was low during pregnancy: 0.31 cups/week of dried beans, 0.37 cups/week of chili, and 0.10 cups/week of bean soup. Maternal bean consumption varied by socio-demographics and geographic regions. In comparison with those who never consumed dried beans, mothers who ate dried beans ≥ 1 time per week had a higher mean HEI score (67.5 vs. 63.6), intake of total fiber (24.4 vs. 17.4 g/day), and protein (93.4 vs. 79.9 g/day), but a lower percentage of energy from added sugar (12.6 vs. 15.2%). Higher dried bean consumption had weak-to-moderate correlations with intake of total fiber (correlation coefficient, 0.320), insoluble fiber (0.316), soluble fiber (0.310), and folate (0.286). Similar but less extensive correlations were observed for chili and bean soup consumption. (4) Conclusions: In this US cohort of pregnant women, bean consumption was low. Increased intake of beans (≥1 time per week) may improve maternal diet quality during pregnancy.

2. An Argument for the Safety of Immediate Device Reconstruction following Mastectomy during the COVID-19 Crisis

Abstract: Background:. Although oncologic surgery is deemed urgent during the COVID-19 pandemic, clinical guidelines in reconstructive surgery have been unclear. Utilizing propensity-matched pre-pandemic data and our institutional experience during the crisis, we aimed to assess the safety of immediate device reconstruction following mastectomy to aid in decision-making during the pandemic. Methods:. Women undergoing mastectomy only and mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) with tissue expander or permanent implant from the 2007–2013 ACS-NSQIP datasets were included. Multivariate analysis of independent variables was used to form propensity-matched cohorts. Incidence of 30-day major postoperative bleeding and hospital length of stay were compared. Results:. In total, 13,580 mastectomy only patients and 11,636 IBR patients were identified. Factors that were found to be associated with IBR included age (P = 0.022), BMI (P < 0.001), race (P = 0.010), diabetes (P = 0.007), chronic steroid use (P = 0.003), pulmonary disease (P = 0.004), cardiovascular disease (P < 0.001), disseminated cancer (P = 0.001), chemotherapy before surgery (P = 0.016), low hematocrit (P < 0.001), and total operative time (P < 0.001). After propensity matching, immediate device reconstruction following mastectomy was not found to be associated with greater risk of postoperative bleeding (1.4% versus 1.0%, P = 0.334) or increased length of stay (1.5 ± 2.9 versus 1.5 ± 3.5 days, P = 0.576). Conclusions:. Immediate device reconstruction does not elevate morbidity in terms of postoperative bleeding or does not increase the length of hospital exposure. Tissue expander or implant reconstruction can be safely performed immediately following mastectomy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, our institutional experience during the pandemic indicates that select patients can continue to safely undergo ambulatory mastectomy with device placement.

3. Molecular evolution across developmental time reveals rapid divergence in early embryogenesis

Abstract: Abstract Ontogenetic development hinges on the changes in gene expression in time and space within an organism, suggesting that the demands of ontogenetic growth can impose or reveal predictable pattern in the molecular evolution of genes expressed dynamically across development. Here, we characterize coexpression modules of the Caenorhabditis elegans transcriptome, using a time series of 30 points from early embryo to adult. By capturing the functional form of expression profiles with quantitative metrics, we find fastest evolution in the distinctive set of genes with transcript abundance that declines through development from a peak in young embryos. These genes are highly enriched for oogenic function and transient early zygotic expression, are nonrandomly distributed in the genome, and correspond to a life stage especially prone to inviability in interspecies hybrids. These observations conflict with the “early conservation model” for the evolution of development, although expression‐weighted sequence divergence analysis provides some support for the “hourglass model.” Genes in coexpression modules that peak toward adulthood also evolve fast, being hyper‐enriched for roles in spermatogenesis, implicating a history of sexual selection and relaxation of selection on sperm as key factors driving rapid change to ontogenetically distinguishable coexpression modules of genes. We propose that these predictable trends of molecular evolution for dynamically expressed genes across ontogeny predispose particular life stages, early embryogenesis in particular, to hybrid dysfunction in the speciation process.

4. A Case Report of Cake Frosting as a Source of Copper Toxicity in a Pediatric Patient

Abstract: Introduction: Copper is an uncommon source of metal toxicity in children that requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis. Case Report: We describe the unique presentation of a 12-month-old girl who developed acute onset of vomiting and diarrhea after ingestion of a copper-contaminated birthday cake. Conclusion: This case highlights the presentation, evaluation, and management of the rare pediatric patient who presents with copper poisoning. This case also illuminates the public health implications of potential metal poisoning when using non-edible decorative products in homemade and commercially prepared baked goods.

Abstract: Coherent control of ensembles of light emitters by means of multi-wave mixing processes is key for the realization of high capacity optical quantum memories and information processing devices. In this context, semiconductor quantum dots placed in optical microcavities represent excellent candidates to explore strong light-matter interactions beyond the limits of perturbative non-linear optics and control the unitary evolution of optically driven quantum systems. In this work, we demonstrate that a sequence of two optical picosecond pulses can be used to establish coherent control over the phase evolution of the ensemble of trions in (In,Ga)As quantum dots independent of their initial quantum state. Our approach is based on coherent transfer between degenerate multi-wave-mixing signals in the strong field limit where Rabi rotations in multi-level systems take place. In particular, we use the two-pulse photon echo sequence to uncover the coherent dynamics of the trion ensemble, whereas the areas of two additional control pulses serve as tuning knobs for adjusting the magnitude and timing of the coherent emission. Furthermore, we make use of the spin degeneracy of ground and excited state of trions to control the polarization state of the emitted signal. Surprisingly, we reveal that the use of optical control pulses, whose durations are comparable to the dephasing time of the ensemble, lifts the temporal degeneracy between wave-mixing processes of different order. This phenomenon is manifested in a significant modification of the temporal shape of the coherent optical response for strong optical fields. Lifting the temporal degeneracy allows to smoothly trace the transition from the perturbative to the regime of Rabi rotations and opens up new possibilities for the optical investigation of complex energy level structures in so far unexplored material systems.

Abstract: Most patients who receive unconventional testing for metals do not have any remarkable exposure history and typically lack symptoms or objective findings compatible with classic heavy metal intoxication. Unconventional tests results are usually promoted by alternative practitioners as the basis for recommending, promoting, and selling to the patient questionable and often inappropriate therapies/interventions supposedly aimed at “detoxification”. Most of these patients will have no evidence of overexposure to metals on the basis of a thorough history and will have levels of metals on conventional tests performed at reliable laboratories that are undetectable, within population background ranges or above population background, but well below levels associated with toxicity.

Abstract: Na Serra do Espinhaço Meridional, as fitofisionomias de floresta estacional decidual são bastante desconhecidas com relação a sua fitogeografia e a composição florística dessas áreas. Portanto, é importante e necessário que sejam feitas pesquisas que possam auxiliar no conhecimento da flora existente nessas florestas. O presente estudo avalia as mudanças na composição da flora e na estrutura da vegetação em três fragmentos de floresta estacional decidual sobre afloramentos rochosos de calcário na Serra do Cipó, situada na região central de Minas Gerais. Ao longo do gradiente de sucessão ecológica, avalia-se a composições florísticas nos estágios sucessionais inicial, intermediário e tardio. O objetivo foi inventariar as espécies da composição florística dos estratos arbóreo e regenerante e analisar parâmetros estruturais da comunidade florestal, além de fazer uma caracterização e comparação das áreas estudas. Para amostragem, foram inventariadas e identificadas todas as espécies arbustivas e arbóreas ocorrentes em 9 parcelas de 50 metros de comprimento e 20 metros de largura, delimitadas como unidade amostral desse estudo. Também foram inventariadas as plantas lenhosas ocorrentes no estrato regenerante da vegetação. Foram identificas nos dois estratos amostrados, um total de 1.222 indivíduos distribuídos entre 182 espécies. Os resultados mostram que a composição florística permite compreender como a vegetação se regenera no espaço e no tempo e, também, quais os padrões e processos ecológicos definem a estrutura e composição da comunidade arbóreo-arbustiva nos enclaves florestais estudados.

Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60~live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c$^2$. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c$^2$, rejecting cross sections above 9.2$\times 10^{-48}$ cm$^2$ at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. Abstract: Children affected by Specific Language Impairment (SLI) fail to acquire age appropriate language skills despite adequate intelligence and opportunity. SLI is highly heritable, but the understanding of underlying genetic mechanisms has proved challenging. In this study, we use molecular genetic techniques to investigate an admixed isolated founder population from the Robinson Crusoe Island (Chile), who are affected by a high incidence of SLI, increasing the power to discover contributory genetic factors. We utilize exome sequencing in selected individuals from this population to identify eight coding variants that are of putative significance. We then apply association analyses across the wider population to highlight a single rare coding variant (rs144169475, Minor Allele Frequency of 4.1% in admixed South American populations) in the NFXL1 gene that confers a nonsynonymous change (N150K) and is significantly associated with language impairment in the Robinson Crusoe population (p = 2.04 × 10-4, 8 variants tested). Subsequent sequencing of NFXL1 in 117 UK SLI cases identified four individuals with heterozygous variants predicted to be of functional consequence. We conclude that coding variants within NFXL1 confer an increased risk of SLI within a complex genetic model.

Abstract: We study Rabi rotations arising in intensity-dependent photon echoes from an ensemble of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots. To achieve a uniform distribution of intensities within the excited ensemble, we introduce flattop intensity profiles of picosecond laser pulses. This allows us to overcome the damping of Rabi rotations imposed by the spatial inhomogeneity of Rabi frequencies by a Gaussian laser profile. Using photon echo polarimetry, we distinguish between the coherent optical responses from exciton and trion ensembles. Here, we demonstrate that a photo-induced charging of the quantum dots leads to a significant reduction of the number of neutral quantum dots under resonant excitation with intensive optical pulses with areas exceeding $\frac{\pi}{2}$. The trion ensemble shows robust Rabi rotations when the area of the refocussing pulse is increased up to 5.5$\pi$. We analyze the remaining attenuation of Rabi rotations by theoretical modeling of excitation induced dephasing, inhomogeneity of dipole moments, and coupling to acoustic phonons. The latter is identified as the dominating mechanism resulting in a loss of optical coherence during the action of the involved optical pulses.

Abstract: Multidimensional coherent spectroscopy (MDCS) is used to separate coherent and incoherent many-body contributions to the population-time dynamics in a GaAs-based semiconductor microcavity encapsulating a single InGaAs quantum well. In a three-pulse four-wave-mixing scheme, the second delay time is the population time that in MDCS probes excited-state coherences and population dynamics. Nonlinear optical interactions can mix these contributions, which are isolated here for the lower- and upper-exciton-polariton through the self- and mutual-interaction features. Results show fast decays and oscillations arising from the coherent response, including a broad stripe along the absorption energy axis, and longer time mutual-interaction features that do not obey a simple population decay model. These results are qualitatively replicated by Bloch equation simulations for the 1s exciton strongly coupled to the intracavity field. The simulations allow for separation of coherent and incoherent Pauli-blocking and Coulomb interaction terms within the chi^(3)-limit, and direct comparison of each feature in one-quantum rephasing and zero-quantum spectra., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figure, preprint format, journal article (resubmission)

Abstract: Cornelia de Lange syndrome is a dominantly inherited, genetically heterogeneous and clinically variable syndrome with multiple congenital anomalies and developmental delay. Gastrointestinal anomalies are common and an important cause of morbidity and mortality. We report on a newborn with a molecularly confirmed Cornelia de Lange syndrome who had an imperforate anus. This is the third report of Cornelia de Lange syndrome and imperforate anus.

17. Post-subduction magmatism and mineralisation : the Tuvatu gold-telluride deposit, Fiji

Abstract: Post-subduction, alkaline magmas host some of the world's largest gold deposits, which show enrichments in other elements, including the critical element tellurium. Fiji is home to several of these enigmatic deposits, including Tuvatu. Mineralised magmatic centres across Fiji formed following subduction cessation and plate-boundary reconfiguration. Through detailed geochemical analysis of 93 new samples, I show that compared to syn-subduction magmas, post-subduction suites have elevated concentrations of Ba, Rb, Sr, and K2O, and Nb-Ta depletions. Geochemical modelling suggests syn-subduction fractionation formed cumulates containing biotite, which were re-activated during post-subduction, liberating trace elements and metals. Through detailed, quantitative mineralogy of Tuvatu I show that the alkaline monzonite there hosts two styles of mineralisation: the Main Zone (laterally extensive veinlets of quartz, carbonates, minor sulfides, tellurides, and native-Au), and the HT zone (vuggy rock containing quartz, biotite, apatite, magnetite, sulfides, native-Au, and lesser carbonate and tellurides). Precious-metal tellurides dominate Au deportment, contributing 5x more Au by weight than native-Au. There is evidence of multiple fluid phases and zoning with depth. Mineral assemblages suggest high temperatures (>250°C) which may allow Au and other metals to remain as semi-metal melts. These aid the transfer of precious-metals into the ore-forming environment, alongside other processes recognised in the crustal continuum of post-subduction ore deposits, including CO2-facilitated transport of metals, and high pH hydrothermal fluids. Through an assessment of critical metals as by-products, I suggest that recovery of Te alongside Au could impact apportioning of carbon between metals and influence the environmental credentials of a deposit. Post-subduction, alkaline magmas can enable processes which support the development of precious- and critical-metal rich ore deposits and offer a potential source from which those metals might be more sustainably produced together, rather than in separate, single-metal mines.

18. Steady states of $\Lambda$-type three-level systems excited by quantum light in lossy cavities

Abstract: The interaction between quantum light and matter is being intensively studied for systems that are enclosed in high-$Q$ cavities which strongly enhance the light-matter coupling. However, for many applications, cavities with lower $Q$-factors are preferred due to the increased spectral width of the cavity mode. Here, we investigate the interaction between quantum light and matter represented by a $\Lambda$-type three-level system in lossy cavities, assuming that cavity losses are the dominant loss mechanism. We demonstrate that cavity losses lead to non-trivial steady states of the electronic occupations that can be controlled by the loss rate and the initial statistics of the quantum fields. The mechanism of formation of such steady states can be understood on the basis of the equations of motion. Analytical expressions for steady states and their numerical simulations are presented and discussed.

Abstract: Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. 20. Dark-state and loss-induced phenomena in the quantum-optical regime of $\Lambda$-type three-level systems

Abstract: The interaction of matter with quantum light leads to phenomena which cannot be explained by semiclassical approaches. Of particular interest are states with broad photon number distributions which allow processes with high-order Fock states. Here, we analyze a Jaynes-Cummings-type model with three electronic levels which is excited by quantum light. As quantum light we consider coherent and squeezed states. In our simulations we include several loss mechanisms, namely, dephasing, cavity, and radiative losses which are relevant in real systems. We demonstrate that losses allow one to control the population of electronic levels and may induce coherent population trapping, as well as lead to a redistribution of the photon statistics among the quantum fields and even to a transfer of the photon statistics from one field to another. Moreover, we introduce and analyze a novel quantity, the quantum polarization, and demonstrate its fundamental difference compared to the classical polarization. Using the quantum polarization and the third level population, we investigate electromagnetically induced transparency in the presence of quantum light and show its special features for the case of squeezed light. Finally, quantum correlations between fields are studied and analyzed in the presence of different types of losses.

Abstract: Semiconductor quantum dots are excellent candidates for ultrafast coherent manipulation of qubits by laser pulses on picosecond timescales or even faster. In inhomogeneous ensembles a macroscopic optical polarization decays rapidly due to dephasing, which, however, is reversible in photon echoes carrying complete information about the coherent ensemble dynamics. Control of the echo emission time is mandatory for applications. Here, we propose a novel concept to reach this goal. In a two-pulse photon echo sequence, we apply an additional resonant control pulse with multiple of 2pi area. Depending on its arrival time, the control slows down dephasing or rephasing of the exciton ensemble during its action. We demonstrate for self-assembled (In,Ga)As quantum dots that the photon echo emission time can be retarded or advanced by 5 ps relative to its nominal appearance time without control. Abstract: LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a second-generation direct dark matter experiment with spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering sensitivity above $1.4 \times 10^{-48}$ cm$^{2}$ for a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c$^{2}$ and a 1000 d exposure. LZ achieves this sensitivity through a combination of a large 5.6 t fiducial volume, active inner and outer veto systems, and radio-pure construction using materials with inherently low radioactivity content. The LZ collaboration performed an extensive radioassay campaign over a period of six years to inform material selection for construction and provide an input to the experimental background model against which any possible signal excess may be evaluated. The campaign and its results are described in this paper. We present assays of dust and radon daughters depositing on the surface of components as well as cleanliness controls necessary to maintain background expectations through detector construction and assembly. Finally, examples from the campaign to highlight fixed contaminant radioassays for the LZ photomultiplier tubes, quality control and quality assurance procedures through fabrication, radon emanation measurements of major sub-systems, and bespoke detector systems to assay scintillator are presented., Comment: 45 pages (79 inc. tables), 7 figures, 9 tables

Abstract: We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850' level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. We describe the major subsystems of the experiment and its key design features and requirements.

Abstract: Introduction: Copper is an uncommon source of metal toxicity in children that requires a high index of suspicion for diagnosis.Case Report: We describe the unique presentation of a 12-month-old girl who developed acute onset of vomiting and diarrhea after ingestion of a copper-contaminated birthday cake.Conclusion: This case highlights the presentation, evaluation, and management of the rare pediatric patient who presents with copper poisoning. This case also illuminates the public health implications of potential metal poisoning when using non-edible decorative products in homemade and commercially prepared baked goods.

27. Isolating novel antibodies against difficult targets using next generation antibody phage display

Abstract: Phage display bypasses the immune response by bringing the entire immune repertoire to a target antigen, in vitro. The coupling of antibody phage display and next generation sequencing (NGS) has the potential to revolutionise the discovery of novel antibodies. In this study, next generation antibody phage display (NGAPD) strategies were devised to identify novel antibodies against conformational epitopes on the enzyme phytase, and against the hapten phytic acid. These were notably difficult targets and previous immunisation attempts for phytic acid have not demonstrated any immune response for hybridoma or the production of immune phage display libraries. This study used naïve human scFv and camelid VHH phage display libraries and it was therefore more difficult to identify potential binders due to a lack of bias towards the targets within a high level of antibody diversity. Following phage panning, the read depth provided by NGS facilitates the identification of novel ligands from within a diverse sub-library, and thus the study also aimed to optimise the use of NGS with naïve phage display libraries. The NGS approach was used in comparison with conventional colony picking. The colony picking approach successfully identified phage-fusion binders against the three targets, however when expressed as antibody-MBP fusions the binding activities were lost. The NGS data analysis involved ranking candidates using a Z score followed by further, highly stringent sorting analyses designed to remove nonspecific ligands. Major challenges involved rescuing scFv candidates from their sub-libraries; this was later resolved with the use of the camelid VHH library that uses a single antibody framework. The NGAPD concluded with a range of NGS candidates synthesised from the final VHH experiment. The candidates were cloned in a single step into a pMAL expression system using inverse PCR. Finally, the NGS candidates were expressed as MBP fusions; however no binding activity was detected. The final section of the study considered alternative bioinformatics analysis strategies for NGS data that have been used in the literature for both antibodies and peptides and also suggested novel enrichment profiles as a means of identifying selection dependant ligands. The VHH NGS data was reassessed based solely on candidate frequency and enrichment throughout panning. A selection of antibody candidates were identified by both bioinformatics methods for phytase, suggesting that the original NGS analysis strategy was successfully identifying promising candidates that were more likely to be conformation specific.

28. Psychological treatment for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance misuse needs : a qualitative study from the psychologist's perspective

Abstract: Background: Despite this, treatment rates for individuals with mental health and substance use needs remain low and access to treatment remains problematic. Research has furthered our understanding of the associations between mental health and substance use, and treatment approaches, but the attitudes and perspective of clinical psychologists, working with individuals who present with these co-occurring needs have been less researched. Objective: This study aims to explore clinical psychologist's attitudes and perspectives towards working with individuals who use substances and will consider the wider social impact of professional's regard for this patient group in relation to psychological treatment accessibility and outcome. Methods: Semi structured interviews were used with eight clinical psychologists. Interview data was analysed using thematic analysis using six stages outlined by Braun and Clarke (2006). Findings: Three over-arching themes were identified: 1. Professional and the Personal Self, 2. Organisations, Systems and Services, 3. Willingness to Treat. Conclusions: The findings suggest co-occurring mental health and substance use needs can present a challenge for clinical psychologists and can bring added complexity for non-specialist services. The findings illustrated disparate views between and within services as to roles and remits of clinical psychologists in substance use issues. Findings also suggested that a lack of focus on substance use issues within professional training programmes may influence how clinical psychologists have come to view their role within this area. The findings highlighted a need for an increased focus on the role of psychology in the treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use in professional training programmes, which could have implications for increasing access to psychological treatment for this client group.

Abstract: On the strength of a double Nobel prize winning experiment (Super)Kamiokande and an extremely successful long baseline neutrino programme, the third generation Water Cherenkov detector, Hyper-Kamiokande, is being developed by an international collaboration as a leading worldwide experiment based in Japan. The Hyper-Kamiokande detector will be hosted in the Tochibora mine, about 295 km away from the J-PARC proton accelerator research complex in Tokai, Japan. The currently existing accelerator will be steadily upgraded to reach a MW beam by the start of the experiment. A suite of near detectors will be vital to constrain the beam for neutrino oscillation measurements. A new cavern will be excavated at the Tochibora mine to host the detector. The experiment will be the largest underground water Cherenkov detector in the world and will be instrumented with new technology photosensors, faster and with higher quantum efficiency than the ones in Super-Kamiokande. The science that will be developed will be able to shape the future theoretical framework and generations of experiments. Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to measure with the highest precision the leptonic CP violation that could explain the baryon asymmetry in the Universe. The experiment also has a demonstrated excellent capability to search for proton decay, providing a significant improvement in discovery sensitivity over current searches for the proton lifetime. The atmospheric neutrinos will allow to determine the neutrino mass ordering and, together with the beam, able to precisely test the three-flavour neutrino oscillation paradigm and search for new phenomena. Abstract: The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will search for dark matter particle interactions with a detector containing a total of 10 tonnes of liquid xenon within a double-vessel cryostat. The large mass and proximity of the cryostat to the active detector volume demand the use of material with extremely low intrinsic radioactivity. We report on the radioassay campaign conducted to identify suitable metals, the determination of factors limiting radiopure production, and the selection of titanium for construction of the LZ cryostat and other detector components. This titanium has been measured with activities of $^{238}$U$_{e}$~$<$1.6~mBq/kg, $^{238}$U$_{l}$~$<$0.09~mBq/kg, $^{232}$Th$_{e}$~$=0.28\pm 0.03$~mBq/kg, $^{232}$Th$_{l}$~$=0.25\pm 0.02$~mBq/kg, $^{40}$K~$<$0.54~mBq/kg, and $^{60}$Co~$<$0.02~mBq/kg (68\% CL). Such low intrinsic activities, which are some of the lowest ever reported for titanium, enable its use for future dark matter and other rare event searches. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to assess the expected background contribution from the LZ cryostat with this radioactivity. In 1,000 days of WIMP search exposure of a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, the cryostat will contribute only a mean background of $0.160\pm0.001$(stat)$\pm0.030$(sys) counts., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract: Hyper-Kamiokande consists of two identical water-Cherenkov detectors of total 520~kt with the first one in Japan at 295~km from the J-PARC neutrino beam with 2.5$^{\textrm{o}}$ Off-Axis Angles (OAAs), and the second one possibly in Korea in a later stage. Having the second detector in Korea would benefit almost all areas of neutrino oscillation physics mainly due to longer baselines. There are several candidate sites in Korea with baselines of 1,000$\sim$1,300~km and OAAs of 1$^{\textrm{o}}$$\sim$3$^{\textrm{o}}$. We conducted sensitivity studies on neutrino oscillation physics for a second detector, either in Japan (JD $\times$ 2) or Korea (JD + KD) and compared the results with a single detector in Japan. Leptonic CP violation sensitivity is improved especially when the CP is non-maximally violated. The larger matter effect at Korean candidate sites significantly enhances sensitivities to non-standard interactions of neutrinos and mass ordering determination. Current studies indicate the best sensitivity is obtained at Mt. Bisul (1,088~km baseline, $1.3^\circ$ OAA). Thanks to a larger (1,000~m) overburden than the first detector site, clear improvements to sensitivities for solar and supernova relic neutrino searches are expected., Comment: 102 pages, 49 figures. Abstract: The design and performance of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) detector is described as of March 2015 in this Conceptual Design Report. LZ is a second-generation dark-matter detector with the potential for unprecedented sensitivity to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) of masses from a few GeV/c2 to hundreds of TeV/c2. With total liquid xenon mass of about 10 tonnes, LZ will be the most sensitive experiment for WIMPs in this mass region by the end of the decade. This report describes in detail the design of the LZ technical systems. Expected backgrounds are quantified and the performance of the experiment is presented. The LZ detector will be located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota. The organization of the LZ Project and a summary of the expected cost and current schedule are given., Comment: 278 pages. Abstract: Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of Hyper-Kamiokande is the study of $CP$ asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this paper, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis uses the framework and systematic uncertainties derived from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW $\times$ 10$^7$ sec integrated proton beam power (corresponding to $1.56\times10^{22}$ protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a $2.5$-degree off-axis neutrino beam, it is expected that the leptonic $CP$ phase $\delta_{CP}$ can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of $\delta_{CP}$, and $CP$ violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than $3\,\sigma$ ($5\,\sigma$) for $76\%$ ($58\%$) of the $\delta_{CP}$ parameter space. Using both $\nu_e$ appearance and $\nu_\mu$ disappearance data, the expected 1$\sigma$ uncertainty of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ is 0.015(0.006) for $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.5(0.45)$., Comment: 40 pages, 26 figures
