The prevalence of serial murder is low; however, it has been the focus of much academic and popular attention. Despite a considerable research base on serial murder, there is still debate as to how it should be defined. This article examines often used definitions of serial murder, followed by a critique of some of the main components of these definitions. From this, a definition is advanced with rationales for the inclusion of the characteristics in the proposed definition. This analysis provides for some clarity in the identification of serial murder and those aspects of the crime used to define it.

While heteronormativity remained at the core of the classic fairy tale, a queer subtext existed in the form of subtle symbolic codes. By reflecting the changing socio- cultural discourses about sexuality and gender in time, the representation of queer sexuality in fairy tales has also developed. This paper attempts a queer reading of the revisioning of Madame Beaumont’s “Beauty and the Beast” in Emma Donoghue’s “The Tale of the Rose” and the 2017 Disney version. This paper demonstrates how Emma Donoghue’s adaptation deconstructs the heteronormativity of Beaumont’s tale by dismantling the binaries of Beauty/Beast and man/woman and represents queer sexuality and desire through multi-layered language. This paper also examines how in the Disney version the story takes a new dimension in close proximity to twenty-first century media culture and lends itself to queer interpretation.

Aim: The objective of this work was to determine the behavior of the trajectories of the air plots in two sites (San Mateo Atenco-(SM) and San Lorenzo Tepaltitlán-(SL)), in the atmosphere of the Metropolitan Zone of the Toluca Valley (MZTV). Methodology: In the atmosphere of the MZTV, using HYSPLIT a Backward trajectory direction analysis was performed from June 29 to July 8, 2021, considering for each day the summertime schedules of the center, indicating its Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). An ANOVA analysis (with a significance level of α=0.05) was performed for the concentrations of SM and SL obtained with PIXE, with the objective of seeing the equality of their behavior. Results: The behavior of the direction of the trajectories of the air plots in both sites is similar and the trajectories for the same day are the same in both sites but different on another day; It was determined that during night-day (19 to 12 h of the following day) the behavior is similar and changes during the remaining time, being variable. In general, the origin of the trajectories of the air plots for both sites of the MZTV is predominantly from the southeast, a situation that was confirmed with Wind Roses. Of the ANOVA analysis, the p-value was in all cases greater than the significance level of 0.05, the null hypothesis was accept, and it is possible to conclude that the elemental chemical composition of PM2.5 have equal means in both sites. Conclusion: Among other, it is possible to consider the behavior of meteorological parameters and thus take them into account for sampling studies of criteria pollutants such as PM2.5.

Petals of edible flowers (EF) are rich in biologically active compounds with many proven benefits for human health. However, studies on the effects of EF in humans after consumption are lacking. This pilot explorative study evaluated the changes in urinary phenolic excretion in healthy volunteers to whom different doses of phenolics from edible roses (Gourmet Roses™) have been added to a meal. Rose petals were picked fresh once a week for three weeks, showing significantly increasing values of total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content, and antioxidant activity (measured as ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and as DPPH • and ABTS •+ scavenging activities) from the first to the third week. After the meal, direct associations between urinary phenolics and both the EF phenolic content and the antioxidant activity were found in a multiple regression model. These new insights on EF consumption, to be confirmed by larger trials, suggest that the urinary phenolic excretion of healthy volunteers increases with increasing rose phenolic content.

The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) 1 Hanson Aggregates stratigraphic research well, Carter County, Kentucky, USA, was drilled to a total depth of 1474 m as a field-scale test of potential CO2 storage reservoir properties in the Central Appalachian Basin. Geomechanical properties of the Rose Run sandstone (upper Ordovician Knox group) were tested for its suitability as a storage reservoir. A 9.8-m thick section of the Rose Run was penetrated at 1000 m drilled depth and a whole-diameter core and rotary sidewall cores were taken. Average porosity and permeability measured in core plugs were 9.1% and 44.6 mD, respectively. Maximum vertical stress gradient calculated in the wellbore was 26 MPa/km. Wellbore fractures in dolomites underlying and overlying the Rose Run follow the contemporary N53°E Appalachian Basin stress field. The Rose Run elastic geomechanical properties were calibrated to values measured in core plugs to evaluate its fracturing risk as a CO2 storage reservoir. Mean Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio values of the Rose Run were 45 GPa and 0.23, respectively, whereas Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio values were 77.1 GPa and 0.28, respectively, in the overlying Beekmantown dolomite, suggesting the Rose Run may fracture if overpressured during CO2 injection but be confined by the Beekmantown. Triaxial compressive strength measured in core plugs found the Rose Run and Beekmantown fractured at mean axial stresses of 156.5 MPa and 282.2 MPa, respectively, confirming the Beekmantown as suitable for confining CO2 injected into the Rose Run. A step-rate test was conducted in a mechanically-isolated 18.6-m interval bracketing the Rose Run. Static Rose Run reservoir pressure was 9.3 MPa, and fracture gradient under injection was 13.6 MPa/km, suggesting step-rate testing before CO2 injection, and subsequent pressure monitoring to ensure confinement. As the region around the KGS 1 Hanson Aggregates well is underpressured and adjacent to faulted Precambrian basement, further research is needed to evaluate its induced seismicity risk during CO2 injection.

In this paper, a rose-flower variety classification scheme, using color and shape features is presented. The first three statistical moments of the R, G, and B planes of the image were calculated to describe the color, while Fourier coefficients are used to describe the shape. For shape description, signatures (wave-forms) of the boundary contour of the binary images were extracted. Fourier coefficients that are used to describe the shape were estimated using the signatures generated. Depending on the Fourier coefficients, a representation of sums of angles formed along boundaries of the flowers was defined. Using these sums and the color features as input to an artificial neural network (ANN), the flowers were classified into their respective target classes. The eighteen flower varieties considered in this study were classified with an accuracy of 95.6%, 98.9%, and 100% using their shape, color, and combination of both shape and color features, respectively. Comparing these results, it was found that the combination of the two features is an efficient criterion for rose flower variety discrimination and classification.

Potassium (K) levels are decreasing worldwide in agricultural soils, and K deficiency is becoming a major issue. Study on damask rose response to K application is scarce. Furthermore, despite its importance in the cell division, photosynthesis and protein synthesis, there is a lack of published reports on plant responses to zinc (Zn) application. Further research is required to understand the damask rose's response to both elements. This study investigated the effects of K and Zn foliar application on the vegetative growth, flower yield, and volatile oil content and composition of damask rose. K and Zn nutrition was applied either individually or combined as K2SO4 and ZnSO4 at 0.5 or 1.0%. Foliar application of K2SO4 and ZnSO4 was applied with a manual pump four times in each growing season, the first at the beginning of stem elongation and leaf formation, and then at two-weekly intervals. Results showed that K and/or Zn treatments significantly improved the growth characters, flower yield, relative water content (RWC), stomatal conductance, and essential oil content and composition such as linalool, nerol, citronellol, geraniol, and nonadecane. The chlorophyll content, total soluble sugars (TSS), and protein content also increased, but free amino acid content decreased, suggesting that the distribution of nitrogenous compounds (between amino acids and proteins) and their transformation were influenced by K and Zn supply. Individual applications of K or Zn increased the N, P, K, and Zn contents in damask rose leaves, relative to the control, which increased further with combined applications of K and Zn. Results suggest that foliar application of K and/or Zn could be part of the damask rose fertilization program to provide plants with the optimum level of nutrition for improving the quantity and quality of flowers and essential oil yields.

One proposal to significantly reduce cardiovascular disease is the idea of administering a ‘polypill’—a combination of drugs that reduce the risk of heart disease and carry few side effects—to everyone over the age of 55. Despite their promise, population strategies like the polypill have not been well-accepted. In this article, I defend the polypill (and consequently, other similar population strategies) by appealing to fairness. The argument focuses on the need to fairly distribute the costs to individuals. While the fact that population strategies like the polypill impose minor costs on everyone has primarily been used to criticize such strategies, I argue that it gives us a reason to support them. I argue that implementing a population strategy with the polypill contributes to the public good of ‘health system capacity’. I then explain that public goods have widely accepted obligations: they carry an obligation to fairly distribute the costs of the goods and prevent free-riding. Thus, we have at least one pro tanto moral reason to implement the polypill. As such, this article challenges the current literature on the topic, which has largely held adopting population strategies like the polypill to be unjustifiable.

Rose water was water that has a distinctive flavor of rose and produced from the extraction of red rose petals using the steam distillation method. Red rose flowers have been used by some people as food. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant activity of red rose water extract using Diphenyl Picril Hidrazil (DPPH) at various extraction times. The research method consisted of extraction of rose water by steam distillation at a pressure of 2 bar, phytochemical test including phenolic and vitamin C analysis, and antioxidant activity tests. The results of the phytochemical test showed that the extraction time for rose water was 75 minutes, the highest phenolic compound content was 115.04 ± 0.52 mg GAE/g and the highest vitamin C content was 2.201,67±2,89 mg/ 100 g. Based on the IC50 value of rose water extract according to the extraction time successively at the 75 minute was 49.46 ppm; at the 150 minute was 108.36 ppm; at the 225 minute it was 120.22 ppm and the 300 minute it was 160.78 ppm. This shows that rose water is classified as having very strong to moderate antioxidant activity

Fertilization is a limiting factor in plant development and indirectly affects the population density of phytophagous insects. This study tested the performance of the aphid Rhodobium porosum (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on three rose cultivars exposed to two nutrient solutions in subsurface 'ebb and flow' irrigation systems in greenhouse. The performance of R. porosum was determined by means of the life table and fertility. Both cultivar and fertilization affected many life history and population traits of the aphid. The lower insect fertility and survival were observed in the nutrient solution usually recommended for fruit-type vegetables and on the 'Tineke' rose cultivar, because this combination caused lower net reproductive rate R0 (0.52 female), finite rate of increase λ (0.9469 female/day), innate capacity to increase in number rm (-0.0516 female/female/day), as well as longer time interval between each generation T (16.62 days). The lowest performance of the R. porosum on 'Tineke' rose cultivated in the nutrient solution 1 suggests that this seems to be the best combination to reduce problems with aphid attack in soilless rose cultivation.

Objective- Providing a healthy satisfactory visual acuity approach to a patient of Keratoconus fitted with a Rose-K contact lens. Introduction- Rose K lens is an effective option for visual improvement in irregular cornea such as Keratoconus. Contact lenses are the mainstay therapy for Keratoconus and are the treatment modality of choice in 90% of patients due to corneal surface irregularity. Case History- A 32-year-old female patient visited at Ahooja Eye & Dental Institute, Gurugram, with the chief complaint of diminished vision in her left eye for the last one month. The patient did not complain about diminished vision in the right eye. Earlier, the patient had diagnosed with the case of Keratoconus somewhere else and suggested to be continued with the glasses. The patient had a history of spectacles in the last 7 years and using the current prescription for the last 4 months. Visual acuity for distance & near, with glass and the current prescription was recorded. Conclusion- In our case, after all the presented findings and trial, one pair of Rose K2 lenses of varying total diameter and optic zone diameter was ordered. The patient was asked to visit for lens collection and follow up after 6 months. Lastly, it is advised that all Rose k practitioners keep at least two to three trial lenses, assess the fit in each fit, and choose lenses based on corneal topography. Tianxia is considered as an alternative institutionalization to govern the international system. It refers to world governance that is regulated by a world institution. Accordingly, a world institution plays the harmonizer role under this system. States, on the other hand, choose their economic models and the leader organizes the relations among different units. This paper thus argues that Tianxia is an alternative framework to Western-oriented IR theories. In that sense, this article aims to explore the similarities between the philosophical idea of Tianxia and Western-oriented IR Theory. More specifically, the article explores the issue from the international system perspective. The epistemological gaps and ontological similarities between the two frameworks will be demonstrated.

Cut rose flowers contribute to the economy and development of the export markets for several developing countries. Despite this contribution, profitable production of rose flowers is limited by wilting which leads to lower production. This paper aims to investigate the effects of Calcium foliar feed on the wilting rate of post-harvest rose flowers using the Growth Curve Model. This method was applied to the data consisting of wilting scores on five treatment groups. The Likelihood ratio test was used to test the growth curve and the equality of the growth curves in all groups. Results revealed that the expected growth curves for all groups followed different quadratic functions. The results also revealed that the wilting rate increased with the increase of calcium concentration compared to the control. This leads to a useful model for policy-makers or further analyses.

Objective The study was performed to evaluate the novel potential of red rose extract to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-Ace2 receptor interaction in vitro. Methods ACE2 receptors were His-labelled, and the interaction was studied by chemiluminescence after the addition of anti-His HRP and HRP substrate. The inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 and ACE2 was assessed in a dose-dependent sequence. Results The 50% inhibitory concentration was observed at 0.75 percent v/v of the rose extract, and the 90% inhibition was seen at about 1.8 percent v/v. Steam inhalation or nebulization could be simple methods of delivering rose extracts to the lower respiratory tract and pulmonary tissues. Conclusion Rose extracts have a potential for inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 and ACE2 receptor in vitro, which could add beneficial effects in Covid-19 treatment. Further tests need to be performed to study their therapeutic benefits in vivo.

A dynamic, physical model was created to predict soil erosion of Lagawe River Sub-watershed, a sub-watershed of Magat River Watershed, Philippines. Tipping-bucket rain gauge was installed to gather event-based rainfall data and a water-level recorder was installed on a straight segment of Lagawe River to gather water depth. Sediment samples were taken during rainstorm events and were used to calibrate the model. Manning’s equation was used to calculate surface runoff and stream flow velocity. Rose’ and Freebairn’s Equation was used to calculate sediment mass. Geographic Information System was utilized as a tool for modelling using PCRaster Software. The model estimated a total of 57,905,000 m3 of eroded sediments which was generated during Typhoon Koppu (local name, Lando) in year 2015. A Welch Two Sample t-value of -0.25 and a p-value of 0.81 was achieved on the statistical analysis between the measured sediment yield and the output of the model. Since the p-value is greater than 0.05 (5%), there is no significant difference between the output of the physical dynamic model and the measured value for sediment yield. Likewise, the correlation analysis supports this conclusion with a linearly positive R2 value of 0.74.

Rose yellow mosaic virus, which belongs to the Roymovirus genus in the Potyviridae family, was isolated here in Japan from a rose cultivar, Irish Mist. The full-length genomic sequence was similar to a strain in Minnesota, United States, which was the first ever isolated, with 85% nucleotide and 94% amino acid sequence similarities. Unlike the Minnesota strain, which lacks 220 nt including the 6K1 protein region, the Japanese isolate contains this coding region, which is commonly found in those of the Potyviridae.

This article examines Diane Paragas’ film Yellow Rose (2019) for its capacity to offer important insights into the reparative utility of music for a child separated from a parent due to deportation. While the film depicts the brutality of contemporary U.S. migration policies, Yellow Rose is also a story about the role of aesthetic expression in childhood’s diasporic imaginaries. The film teaches us about the agentic potential of music as a mode of dealing with the trauma of forced separation. In particular, the genre of American country music is affectively instrumentalized by the film’s young, Filipinx protagonist. In deepening my argument, I work with the film to explain that the kinship between Rose and a genre of music that is hegemonically associated with whiteness produces a “queer sonic” that serves as conduit for the emergence of contingent networks of care and methods of survival. I propose that queer sonic expression, or the unassimilable qualities of sound and genre, is a site where we can broaden racialized imaginings of Filipinx childhood, as it offers an opportunity for reparation.

The androgynous heroine of Ikeda Ryoko’s manga The Rose of Versailles (1972‐73), Oscar Françoise de Jarjayes, is usually depicted in masculine, specifically military, attire. The sixth daughter of an important military colonel during the reign of Louis XV and Louis XVI, Oscar is raised as a son and follows her father into the military. Oscar is only ever depicted in one dress, known as the robe l’odalisque ‐ a gown that is adopted at a pivotal moment of character development. It is while wearing this dress, which Ikeda intended to serve as a wedding dress, that Oscar comes to terms with her unrequited love for Marie Antoinette’s lover, Count Axel von Fersen. In doing so, Oscar places more importance on her allegiance to France than to romance. This article investigates the complicated gender and social politics that are symbolized by the choice to wear women’s clothing in The Rose of Versailles.

In indoor environments such as hotels, the light intensity is generally insufficient for managing plants, and flower buds often fail to open. Lamps placed above (downward lighting) take up space. We assessed the applicability of lighting from underneath (upward lighting) for the indoor management of roses. We grew plants indoors in dim light for 2 weeks under three conditions: 1) without supplemental lighting, 2) with downward light-emitting diode (LED) lighting, and 3) with LED lighting. We quantified photosynthetic components (chlorophyll and rubisco) and the maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm, an indicator of plant health) to determine the effects of each treatment on the quality and photosynthetic abilities of the leaves. We determined the ratios of dead and opened flower buds to elucidate the effects of supplemental lighting on flower bud maturation. Management without supplemental lighting decreased the number of flowers and resulted in lower-leaf senescence. Downward LED lighting promoted blooming but also resulted in lower-leaf senescence. However, upward LED lighting promoted blooming and maintained the photosynthetic abilities of the leaves, including the lower leaves. This study shows a strong case for using upward LED lighting in appropriate settings for indoor plant management and LED-based horticulture.

Cinnamon rose (Rosa majalis Herrm.) is the one of two species of rose hips growing in the Kemerovo region. The rose hips pharmacopoeial raw material are fruits which used as a vitamin agent. The rose hips pharmacological effect is due to the rich complex of biologically active substances contained in its fruits. Cinnamon rose belongs to the high-vitamin species. Ascorbic acid content can reach 4-14% in it. Due to the high content of organic acids and polyphenols, rose hips and preparations based on it have a fairly strong antioxidant effect. They are often used to prevent vitamin C deficiency, which is especially important for the region local population living in a territory with a harsh continental climate, characterized by long cold winters. Therefore, the rose hips from Kuzbass flora further study is an urgent goal to expand the medicinal plant raw material base and to provide the population of the region with a vitamin product. The study was aimed at assessing some biologically active compounds content (tannins, organic acids, ascorbic acid) in the cinnamon rose fruits growing in the region. Ascorbic acid quantitative determination was carried out by HPLC, organic acids and tannins - by titration. The analysis showed that the ascorbic acid content in the raw materials collected in the Topkinsky district of the region reaches 0,450±0,003 %, organic acids - 3,728±0,051 %, which corresponds to the PI requirements for this type of raw material. Tannins quantitative content reaches 5.76 %. Obtained experimental data comparative analysis with the literature confirmed the fact that one of the main factors affecting the rose hips vitamin content is the geographical factor.

BACKGROUND Suction and capillary pull are 2 biopsy techniques used in endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA). Although these techniques have been shown to perform comparably in terms of overall diagnostic yield, we hypothesized that the capillary pull technique would be associated with improved rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) adequacy rates thus allowing for a shorter procedure time. METHODS One hundred eighteen patients undergoing EBUS-TBNA for any indication were randomized to suction or capillary pull techniques for the first biopsy pass; the technique used for all subsequent passes was based on operator preference and was not recorded. The first pass was subjected to ROSE and an adequacy assessment was given. ROSE slides were also scored for cellularity of diagnostic/lesional cells and blood contamination. The overall procedure time was also recorded. RESULTS There were no significant differences between suction and capillary pull techniques in terms of ROSE adequacy rates. Cellularity of diagnostic/lesional cells and blood contamination scores were also comparable. There was no significant difference in procedure time for the 2 techniques. CONCLUSION This study suggests no differences in ROSE outcomes between suction and capillary pull techniques in EBUS-TBNA. The technique used should therefore be left to the discretion of the operator.

Objective This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of foliar spray of polyamines on some morphological and physiological characteristics of rose. Materials and methods Experimental variants involved the type (putrescine, spermidine and spermine) and concentration (0 mM, 1 mM, 2 mM and 4 mM) of polyamines. In this research, the plant height, number of leaves and shoots, leaf area and thickness, fresh and dry weight of leaf and stem, the content of anthocyanin, soluble sugar, phenol and antioxidant capacity were measured 2 weeks after the end of experiment. Results Results indicated that among all polyamine types, putrescine has the highest effect on the morphological characteristics. Among different concentrations of polyamines, the concentration of 1 mM resulted in the highest increase in shoot fresh and dry weight. Putrescine application at 2 mM and 4 mM concentrations increased soluble sugar content. In the present study, polyamine treatment reduced the content of anthocyanin, phenol and antioxidant capacity. Conclusions It can be cocluded that application of polyamines improved some morphological and physiological traits in various ways.

Rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa within the family Rosaceae. In this study, phylogenetic relationship among seven different genotypes of Rose (Rosa) was determined using ISSR primers and morphological parameters. DNA was isolated using CTAB method with 0.5% of CTAB concentration. Out of 50 ISSR primers, 16 primers gave reproducible banding pattern with all the seven genotypes of Rose while others failed to produce polymorphism. A total of 108 bands were obtained with an average polymorphism of 54.69% and an average of 9.06 bands per primer. The average similarity was found to be 0.69 among all the seven genotypes using Jaccard’s similarity coefficient. On basis of polymorphism cluster analysis divided them into two major groups separating one genotype (light pink) from rest of the six genotypes and principle coordinate analysis confirmed the results. A parallel correlation was found between the morphological parameter (flower diameter) and the results of ISSR analysis as both of them divided the seven genotypes into two main groups.

A crucial component of musical performance on bowed instruments is the bow, yet our knowledge of bows in early modern England is almost entirely derived from images that fail to represent bows in extensive or accurate detail. This article provides detailed descriptions of two musical instrument bows (mr81 a6975 and mr05 a0006) recovered from Henry VIII’s favourite ship the Mary Rose, which was wrecked in 1545 and salvaged in 1982. They probably belonged to the owners of the two fiddles recovered from the ship. Despite both bows being incomplete they provide unique evidence for the nature of such artefacts. One bow is a relatively crude object, made probably of oak, possibly by its owner for his own use. The other is a more sophisticated construction, apparently made of yew. Yew was the wood of choice for longbows but its use for musical instrument bows is previously unrecorded. This bow shows evidence of use, and some features indicate that either the bow was repaired or its design includes preparation for a known weakness. The bows are compared with continental European images and the potential forms of the missing parts are discussed. The possibility that two further finds from the Mary Rose (mr81 a1888 and mr82 a2036/2) are parts of musical instruments is dismissed.

This study explores the press coverage of the scandal in 1989 and determines that the Cincinnati press was more sympathetic to, and supportive of Rose than out-of-market coverage, represented in this investigation by The New York Times. These findings are consistent with previous research that indicates that local media favors hometown institutions during times of crisis. This study expands that theory by demonstrating that favoritism extends to individual players whose connection to the city is significant, and furthers our understanding of the media’s role in shaping the narratives of scandal.
