3. Network Analysis of Early School Dropouts' Risk Factors in Italy

Abstract

Early school leaving has profound implications at a socio-economic level and planning effective prevention programs within school is crucial for contrasting it. Based on the hypothesis that the dropout is the last step of a process that ends in the student's decision to leave school, we studied the interplay between multiple risk factors of school dropout and the intention to not continue studies, mapping the plausible causal relationships by exploiting a Bayesian network analysis approach. The main aim of this work is to understand how the intention of dropping out of school is affected by contextual and self-perception variables, identifying the variables that play a key role in the network of the risk dropout factors in order to plan a successful dropout intervention program within schools. We analysed data from national standardized tests, collected by INVALSI, of students at the last year of the lower secondary school in Italy, to monitor the students' transition to upper secondary school. The use of network analysis shed light on the factors to work on within the schools to design effective dropout prevention programs.

7. Metallothionein-1A (MT1A) Gene Variability May Play a Role in Female Frailty: A Preliminary Study.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Frailty is a complex geriatric syndrome resulting in decreased physiological reserve. While genetics plays a role, the underlying mechanisms remain unsolved. Metallothioneins (MTs), metal-binding proteins with high affinity for zinc, an essential mineral for many physiological functions, are involved in processes including oxidative stress and inflammation. We investigated the impact of genetic variations in MTs on frailty. Methods: 448 subjects (235 females and 213 males, median age of 76 years) were categorized into three frailty groups (non-frail/pre-frail/frail), by hierarchical cluster analysis based on cognitive status (MMSE), functional capacity (ADL), and physical strength (HGS). Subjects were analyzed for selected SNPs in MT1A, MT1B, MT2A, and MT3 genes by PCR-RFLP. Results: An association was found between the rs8052394-A/G (Lys51Arg) polymorphism in the MT1A gene and frailty in females both in binary (OR = 0.345, p = 0.037) and multinomial logistic regression (OR = 0.343, p = 0.036) corrected for age and sex, with carriers of the minor G-allele less likely to transition from non-frail to pre-frail status. Additionally, a significant association with albumin levels (beta = 0.231; p = 0.027) and a trend of association with CRP levels (beta = −1.563; p = 0.097) were observed for this SNP in non-frail females, both indicative of a low inflammatory status. However, Bonferroni correction for multiple SNPs and physiological parameters tested renders these results statistically non-significant. Conclusions: Although its associations do not survive Bonferroni correction, this exploratory study suggests a sex-specific influence of MT1A variability in frailty, likely affecting zinc availability, aligning with ongoing research on sex differences in frailty risk and progression. 8. The Potential Contribution of MyomiRs miR-133a-3p, -133b, and -206 Dysregulation in Cardiovascular Disease Risk.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major global health concern. The number of people with CVD is expected to rise due to aging populations and increasing risk factors such as obesity and diabetes. Identifying new molecular markers is crucial for early diagnosis and treatment. Among these, plasma levels of some miRNAs, specifically expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle, known as myomiRs, have gained attention for their roles in cardiovascular health. This study analyzed the plasma levels of miR-133a-3p, -133b, and -206 in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Using a case–control study design with patients recruited from several nursing homes from Calabria (southern Italy) characterized by different types of CVD compared with non-CVD controls, we found downregulation of miR-133a-3p in heart failure and miR-133b in stroke, along with the overall decreased expression of miR-133b and miR-206 in CVD patients, although they showed low specificity as biomarkers of CVD (as based on ROC analysis). In silico functional characterization of their targets and signaling pathways revealed their involvement in critical cardiovascular processes. Although further research is necessary to fully elucidate their mechanisms and clinical utility, the findings reported here may provide insight into the potential contribution of myomiRs in the cardiovascular injury framework, also offering indications for new research directions. 22. Genetic Determinants of Human Longevity

Abstract

In the last two decades, due to the continuous increase of lifespans in Westernsocieties, and the consequent growing of the elderly population, have witnessedan increase in the number of studies on biological and molecular factors able topromote healthy aging and reach longevity. The study of the genetic componentof human longevity demonstrated that it accounts for 25% of intra populationphenotype variance. The efforts made to characterize the genetic determinantssuggested that the maintenance of cellular integrity, inflammation, oxidativestress response, DNA repair, as well as the use of nutrients, represent the mostimportant pathways correlated with a longer lifespan. However, although aplethora of variants were indicated to be associated with human longevity, onlyvery few were successfully replicated in different populations, probably becauseof population specificity, missing heritability as well as a complex interactionamong genetic factors with lifestyle and cultural factors, which modulate theindividual chance of living longer. Thus, many challenges remain to be addressedin the search for the genetic components of human longevity. This Special Issue isaimed to unify the progress in the analysis of the genetic determinants of humanlongevity, to take stock of the situation and point to future directions of the field.We invite submissions for reviews, research articles, short-communicationsdealing with genetic association studies in human longevity, including all types ofgenetic variation, as well as the characterization of longevity-related genes.

Abstract

In information societies, characterized by the consideration of human capital as one of the main levers of development, education plays a crucial role. For this reason, a knowledge of school organizations and education systems by means of non-evidence-based methods and using only incommensurable data becomes inadequate because it is considered to be of little use for its purpose. In this perspective, education indicators have become one of the privileged tools of analysis, especially since the 1990s, in order to measure the health of the school system; the need for comparable data on certain dimensions of the school system has caused them to undergo a surge in terms of interest and use, even if the consensus among scholars and professionals in the field is not unanimous. The aim of this article is to study the usefulness of certain process indicators, showing an example of their use related to teaching practices in mathematics teaching. The way to make synthesis indicators will be highlighted in detail, then showing their ability to summarize the phenomenon at a descriptive level, but also their informative potential in relation to outcome indicators. Abstract

Didactic practices, i.e. choices and actions taken intentionally to realize an educational goal, play a crucial role in students' learning achievement. The aim of the present contribution is to examine the effects of teaching practices, in particular written composition tasks and structured tests, on the score obtained by students at the end of lower secondary education at the Italian tests of INVALSI (school year 2016/2017). To this end, we proposed hierarchical regression models, by controlling for some of the relevant variables at the student and class level. The datasets used are those of the INVALSI National Surveys and the Teacher Questionnaire of the school year 2016/2017.
