Abstract

Porphyrins bearing imidazolium salts were synthesized and used as N-heterocylic carbene (NHC) precursors for the preparation of gold(I) complexes. The dark toxicity and phototoxicity of the obtained compounds were investigated in vitro on MCF-7 breast cancer cells. The obtained data showed that porphyrins equipped with imidazolium salts are non-toxic in the dark and present interesting photodynamic properties. On the contrary, corresponding NHC-gold(I) complexes are not suitable photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) applications. Their dark toxicity strongly depends on the nature of the linker between the porphyrin core and the NHC. This work was extended to the synthesis of a pyropheophorbide a derivative with a pendant imidazolium group for PDT applications using excitation wavelengths of 450 nm, 545 nm, and importantly of 650 nm.

Abstract

New particle formation (NPF) in the free troposphere (FT) is thought to be a significant source of particles over the oceans. The entrainment of particles initially formed in the marine FT is further suspected to be a major contributor to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentrations in the marine boundary layer (BL). Yet, little is known about the process and, more broadly, about the composition of the marine FT, which remains poorly explored due to access difficulties. Here we report measurements performed in April 2018 at the Maïdo Observatory with a nitrate-based chemical ionization atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometer, which have allowed the first molecular-level characterization of the remote marine FT composition. A number of molecules and clusters were identified and classified into nine groups according to their chemical composition; among the identified species, the groups containing methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and C2 amines show signals that are on average significantly higher when the site is under conditions representative of the marine FT (compared to the BL). The correlation analysis revealed apparent connections between the signals of the identified compounds and several variables concurrently measured at the site (under FT conditions) or related to air mass history, suggesting that oxalic acid, malonic acid, and observed C2 amines could be of terrestrial origin, with, in addition, a possible marine source for oxalic acid and amines, while iodic acid, sulfur species, and maleic acid have a dominant marine origin. Identification of FT conditions at the site was based on the analysis of the standard deviation of the wind direction; this parameter, which can easily be derived from continuous measurements at the site, is shown in the first part of the study to be a relevant tracer when compared to predictions from the Meso-NH atmospheric model. Similar to other high-altitude sites, FT conditions are mainly encountered at night at Maïdo; therefore, the link to NPF could not be established, and further research is needed to assess the composition of precursors to nanoparticle formation in the marine FT. Abstract

Future change in sea surface temperature may influence climate via various air-sea feedbacks and pathways. In this study, we investigate the influence of surface seawater biogeochemical composition on the temperature dependence of sea spray number emission fluxes. Dependence of sea spray fluxes was investigated in different water masses (i.e. subantarctic, subtropical and frontal bloom) with contrasting biogeochemical properties across a temperature range from ambient (13–18 °C) to 2 °C, using seawater circulating in a plunging jet sea spray generator. We observed sea spray total concentration to increase significantly at temperatures below 8 °C, with an average 4-fold increase at 2 °C relative to initial concentration at ambient temperatures. This temperature dependence was more pronounced for smaller size sea spray particles (i.e. nucleation and Aitken modes). Moreover, temperature dependence varied with water mass type and so biogeochemical properties. While the sea spray flux at moderate temperatures (8–11 °C) was highest in frontal bloom waters, the effect of low temperature on the sea spray flux was highest with subtropical seawaters. The temperature dependence of sea spray flux was also inversely proportional to the seawater cell abundance of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus, which facilitated parameterization of temperature dependence of sea spray emission fluxes as a function of Synechococcus for future implementation in modelling exercises.

Abstract

The goal of the Sea2Cloud project is to study the interplay between surface ocean biogeochemical and physical properties, fluxes to the atmosphere, and ultimately their impact on cloud formation under minimal direct anthropogenic influence. Here we present an interdisciplinary approach, combining atmospheric physics and chemistry with marine biogeochemistry, during a voyage between 41 degrees and 47 degrees S in March 2020. In parallel to ambient measurements of atmospheric composition and seawater biogeochemical properties, we describe semicontrolled experiments to characterize nascent sea spray properties and nucleation from gas-phase biogenic emissions. The experimental framework for studying the impact of the predicted evolution of ozone concentration in the Southern Hemisphere is also detailed. After describing the experimental strategy, we present the oceanic and meteorological context including provisional results on atmospheric thermodynamics, composition, and flux measurements. In situ measurements and flux studies were carried out on different biological communities by sampling surface seawater from subantarctic, subtropical, and frontal water masses. Air-Sea-Interface Tanks (ASIT) were used to quantify biogenic emissions of trace gases under realistic environmental conditions, with nucleation observed in association with biogenic seawater emissions. Sea spray continuously generated produced sea spray fluxes of 34% of organic matter by mass, of which 4% particles had fluorescent properties, and which size distribution resembled the one found in clean sectors of the Southern Ocean. The goal of Sea2Cloud is to generate realistic parameterizations of emission flux dependences of trace gases and nucleation precursors, sea spray, cloud condensation nuclei, and ice nuclei using seawater biogeochemistry, for implementation in regional atmospheric models.

Abstract

Significance Oceans represent 70% of our planet’s surface, housing a large spectrum of microorganisms that interact with the above atmosphere. Ocean microorganisms were proposed in the late 80’s to be at the center of a climate feedback loop involving dimethyl sulfide (DMS) that would form aerosols and modify cloud properties (CLAW hypothesis). In the present paper, we report observational evidence from semicontrolled experiments in the South Pacific that nitrate ions, yet hitherto not considered, is a key species involved in aerosol nucleation in the pristine marine atmosphere and which precursors are coemitted with DMS. Our results further indicate that nitrate ion formation would be related to short-term microbial processes, sensitive to environmental stressors, therefore potentially “closing the loop”. 25. Evolutionary ecology of intra- and inter-specific interactions in spiders

Abstract

Spiders are common arthropod predators living in most habitats of the world, and due to their plasticity in exploitation of resources, different species may have wide distribution ranges that cover different habitat types. While most species live solitarily, some spider species have independently evolved a permanently social lifestyle where all group members cooperate in colony tasks such as prey capture and brood care. Spiders harbour microbial communities, which may vary among individual hosts (or host groups), and which could be important for shaping phenotypic responses to the local environment. In this thesis, I study ecological interactions within spider species, and between spiders and their local environment and their microbial communities. The thesis aims to understand adaptive responses that enable persistence in different environments and the occupation of new niches.The first chapter explores the organization of spider groups in relation to task differentiation, especially the link between task differentiation, personality, metabolism and reproductive state. The study found some (but limited) evidence indicating that personality, metabolic rate or reproductive status could explain task differentiation in the social spider Stegodyphus mimosarum.The second chapter investigates the role of intolerance towards conspecifics in dispersal decisions and group cohesion both in a temporary and a permanently social Stegodyphus species. Intolerance towards conspecifics is not the cause of dispersal, but rather develops after dispersal to maintain a solitary lifestyle in the temporary social species Stegodyphus lineatus. Intolerance is lost in the social species Stegodyphus sarasinorum, suggesting that this trait is redundant in permanently social species, because they do not interact with competing groups.The third chapter examined the interaction between social spiders and the host plants on which they build their communal nests. The study suggests that Stegodyphus dumicola spiders build their nests preferentially on specific plant species, including host plants with protective spines, and the preferred host plants are associated with improved survival.The fourth chapter investigated at the mode of transmission of bacterial symbionts in the social spider Stegodyphus dumicola, using a combination of life cycle analysis and experimental cross-fostering of offspring. Bacterial symbionts are transmitted across generations by a mixed mode of transmission involving regurgitation feeding by both mothers and non-reproducing female helpers. In the adult state, social transmission governs homogenization of microbiome composition among group-members.The fifth chapter tested whether ecological drift could cause variation in microbiome composition among groups in a social host species Stegodyphus dumicola. The results suggest that stochastic divergence in host-group microbiomes can arise during the process of group formation by individual founders, which could explain the existence of among-group variation in microbiome composition in the wild.My studies were interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed fieldwork (Chapter 6) and caused me to initiate a new study system (Chapter 7). Chapter 6 explores three-way associations between host plants, the social spider Stegodyphus dumicola and their microbial symbionts, to investigate whether plant host microbiomes or their chemical compounds are beneficial or transmitted to social spiders. This project is ongoing, and preliminary results on the microbiome of host plants and spider nests are presented. In the last chapter, I conducted research on the possible effects of urbanization on microbiome composition and diet of the solitary Garden spider Araneus diadematus, to explore whether the microbiome might be involved in occupation of urban areas. This project is ongoing, and preliminary results are presented.

Abstract

The goal of the Sea2Cloud project is to study the interplay between surface ocean biogeochemical and physical properties, fluxes to the atmosphere, and ultimately their impact on cloud formation under minimal direct anthropogenic influence. Here we present an interdisciplinary approach, combining atmospheric physics and chemistry with marine biogeochemistry, during a voyage between 41° and 47°S in March 2020. In parallel to ambient measurements of atmospheric composition and seawater biogeochemical properties, we describe semicontrolled experiments to characterize nascent sea spray properties and nucleation from gas-phase biogenic emissions. The experimental framework for studying the impact of the predicted evolution of ozone concentration in the Southern Hemisphere is also detailed. After describing the experimental strategy, we present the oceanic and meteorological context including provisional results on atmospheric thermodynamics, composition, and flux measurements. In situ measurements and flux studies were carried out on different biological communities by sampling surface seawater from subantarctic, subtropical, and frontal water masses. Air–Sea-Interface Tanks (ASIT) were used to quantify biogenic emissions of trace gases under realistic environmental conditions, with nucleation observed in association with biogenic seawater emissions. Sea spray continuously generated produced sea spray fluxes of 34% of organic matter by mass, of which 4% particles had fluorescent properties, and which size distribution resembled the one found in clean sectors of the Southern Ocean. The goal of Sea2Cloud is to generate realistic parameterizations of emission flux dependences of trace gases and nucleation precursors, sea spray, cloud condensation nuclei, and ice nuclei using seawater biogeochemistry, for implementation in regional atmospheric models.

Abstract

New particle formation (NPF) in the free troposphere (FT) is thought to be a significant source of particles over the oceans. The entrainment of particles initially formed in the marine FT is further suspected to be a major contributor to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentrations in the marine boundary layer (BL). Yet, little is known about the process, and more broadly about the composition of the marine FT, which remains poorly explored due to access difficulties. Here we report measurements performed in April 2018 at the Maïdo observatory with a nitrate based chemical ionisation atmospheric pressure interface time-of-flight mass spectrometer, which have allowed the first molecular-level characterisation of the clusters present in the remote marine FT. A number of clusters were identified and classified into 9 groups according to their chemical composition, among which the groups containing methanesulfonic acid (MSA) and C2 amines, which show signals that are on average significantly higher when the site is under conditions representative of the marine FT (compared to the BL). The correlation analysis revealed apparent connections between the signals of the identified compounds and several variables concurrently measured at the site (under FT conditions) or related to air mass history, suggesting that oxalic acid, malonic acid and observed C2 and C4 amines could be of terrestrial origin, with, in addition, a possible marine source for oxalic acid and amines, while iodic acid, sulfur species and maleic acid have a dominant marine origin. Identification of FT conditions at the site was based on the analysis of the standard deviation of the wind direction; this parameter, which can easily be derived from continuous measurements at the site, is shown in the first part of the study to be a relevant tracer when compared to predictions from the Meso-NH atmospheric model. Similar to other high altitude sites, FT conditions are mainly encountered at night at Maïdo and therefore the link to NPF could not be established, and further research is needed to assess the composition of precursors to nanoparticle formation in the marine FT. Abstract

New particle formation in the Arctic atmosphere is an important source of aerosol particles. Understanding the processes of Arctic secondary aerosol formation is crucial due to their significant impact on cloud properties and therefore Arctic amplification. We observed the molecular formation of new particles from low-volatility vapors at two Arctic sites with differing surroundings. In Svalbard, sulfuric acid (SA) and methane sulfonic acid (MSA) contribute to the formation of secondary aerosol and to some extent to cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). This occurs via ion-induced nucleation of SA and NH3 and subsequent growth by mainly SA and MSA condensation during springtime and highly oxygenated organic molecules during summertime. By contrast, in an ice-covered region around Villum, we observed new particle formation driven by iodic acid but its concentration was insufficient to grow nucleated particles to CCN sizes. Our results provide new insight about sources and precursors of Arctic secondary aerosol particles.

Abstract. Aerosol particles are a complex component of the atmospheric system which influence climate directly by interacting with solar radiation, and indirectly by contributing to cloud formation. The variety of their sources, as well as the multiple transformations they may undergo during their transport (including wet and dry deposition), result in significant spatial and temporal variability of their properties. Documenting this variability is essential to provide a proper representation of aerosols and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in climate models. Using measurements conducted in 2016 or 2017 at 62 ground-based stations around the world, this study provides the most up-to-date picture of the spatial distribution of particle number concentration (Ntot) and number size distribution (PNSD, from 39 sites). A sensitivity study was first performed to assess the impact of data availability on Ntot's annual and seasonal statistics, as well as on the analysis of its diel cycle. Thresholds of 50 % and 60 % were set at the seasonal and annual scale, respectively, for the study of the corresponding statistics, and a slightly higher coverage (75 %) was required to document the diel cycle. Although some observations are common to a majority of sites, the variety of environments characterizing these stations made it possible to highlight contrasting findings, which, among other factors, seem to be significantly related to the level of anthropogenic influence. The concentrations measured at polar sites are the lowest (∼ 102 cm−3) and show a clear seasonality, which is also visible in the shape of the PNSD, while diel cycles are in general less evident, due notably to the absence of a regular day–night cycle in some seasons. Abstract

Aerosols of biogenic and anthropogenic origin affect the total radiative forcing of global climate. Poor knowledge of the pre-industrial aerosol concentration and composition, in particular of particles formed directly in the atmosphere from gaseous precursors, constitutes a large uncertainty in the anthropogenic radiative forcing. Investigations of new particle formation at pre-industrial-like conditions can contribute to the reduction of this uncertainty. Here we present observations taken at the remote Nepal Climate Observatory Pyramid station at 5,079 m above sea level, a few kilometres from the summit of Everest. We show that up-valley winds funnel gaseous aerosol precursors to higher altitudes. During this transport, these are oxidized into compounds of very low volatility, which rapidly form a large number of aerosol particles. These are then transported into the free troposphere, which suggests that the whole Himalayan region may act as an 'aerosol factory' and contribute substantially to the free tropospheric aerosol population. Aerosol production in this region occurs mainly via organic precursors of biogenic origin with little evidence of the involvement of anthropogenic pollutants. This process is therefore likely to be essentially unchanged since the pre-industrial period, and may have been one of the major sources that contributes to the upper tropospheric aerosol population during that time. Newly formed biogenic particles in the Himalaya increase free-tropospheric background aerosol concentration by a factor of up to two.

Abstract

Formation of Ultrafine particles (UFPs) in the urban atmosphere is expected to be less favored than in the rural atmosphere due to the high existing particle surface area acting as a sink for newly-formed particles Despite the large condensation sink (CS) values, previous comparative studies between rural and urban site reported higher frequency of new particle formation (NPF) events over urban sites in comparison to background sites as well as higher particle formation and growth rates attributed to the higher concentration of condensable species. The present study aims to better understand the environmental factors favoring, or disfavoring, atmospheric NPF over Lille, a large city North of France and to analyze their impact on particle number concentration using a long-term dataset (4 years : 1st July 2017 to 31st December 2020). The results highlight a strong seasonal variation of the NPF occurrences with a maximum observed during spring (27 events) and summer (53 events). It was found that high temperature (T > 295 K), low RH (RH < 45 %) and high solar radiation are ideal to observe NPF events over Lille. Relatively high values of condensation sink (CS ~ 2.10-2 s-1) are reported during event days suggesting that high CS does not inhibit the occurrence of NPFt over our site. Moreover, the particle Growth Rate (GR15.7-30 nm) was positively correlated with the temperature most probably linked to the higher emissions of precursors. Finally, the nucleation strength factor (NSF) was calculated to highlight the impact of those NPF events on particle number concentrations. Abstract

To reduce uncertainties in climate predictions, we need to better understand aerosol formation in different environments. An important part of this is studying which chemical species are responsible for particle formation. While many advances have been made in this field, measurements are lacking especially from marine environments. Here, we measured the chemical composition of ambient ions over 7 months at Baring Head station, located in coastal New Zealand. This adds to our previous work which reported the aerosol size distribution measurements and investigated new particle formation and environmental conditions favouring new particle formation at the station. By combining the information on ion chemical composition with our previous work, we were able to study the chemical precursors of new particle formation. Our results showed that while over land new particle formation is likely driven by sulfuric acid and organic species, in clean marine air iodine oxides and sulfur species are likely important drivers of particle formation processes. These data were also used to characterise the diurnal and seasonal cycles of most important ion groups and their geographical source regions. Sulfate ions displayed a clear daytime maximum where as iodine oxides had morning and evening maximums. Highly oxygenated organic molecules on the other hand, were most abundant during the night when the air was land-influenced. This data set is highly valuable and our results provide important information on the chemical species driving new particle formation at a remote Southern Hemisphere coastal site.
