Search

Recent studies have found a striking positive correlation between the amount of dust obscuration and enhanced radio emission in quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). However, what causes this connection remains unclear. In this paper we analyse uGMRT Band-3 (400 MHz) and Band-4 (650 MHz) data of a sample of 38 $1.0 < z < 1.5$ QSOs with existing high-resolution $0.2''$ e-MERLIN 1.4 GHz imaging. In combination with archival radio data, we have constructed sensitive 4-5 band radio SEDs across 0.144-3 GHz to further characterize the radio emission in dusty QSOs. We find that the dusty QSOs (those with E(B-V) $> 0.1$ mag) are more likely to exhibit steep spectral slopes ($\alpha < -0.5$; $S_{\nu} \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) than the non-dusty QSOs (E(B-V) $< 0.1$ mag), with fractions of 46$\pm$12 and 12$\pm$4 per cent, respectively. A higher fraction of the non-dusty QSOs have peaked radio SEDs (48$\pm$9 per cent) compared to the dusty QSOs (23$\pm$8 per cent). We discuss the origin of the radio emission, finding that the majority of the peaked, predominantly non-dusty, QSOs have consistent sizes and luminosities with compact jetted radio galaxies. However, the connection between steepness and dust obscuration implies an outflow-driven shock origin for the enhanced radio more commonly found in dusty QSOs. This article provides a self-contained comprehensive review of the phenomenon of synchronization in dynamical systems, with a particular focus on chaotic systems in both continuous-time and discrete-time contexts. Synchronization, initially observed by Christiaan Huygens in 1665, has evolved from the study of periodic signals to encompass chaotic systems, where the sensitive dependence on initial conditions poses unique challenges. This review pointed to both theoretical foundations and contributions (concepts and methods) and practical insights, reinforcing the relevance of chaos synchronization in physics, biology, engineering, social sciences, economics and communication systems. The study investigates various coupling schemes, such as unidirectional and bidirectional coupling, and presents stability criteria under different configurations. In a very concise way, some ongoing research carried out by the authors is also indicated, using Lorenz, Rossler and hyperchaotic Rossler systems, and quadratic maps as case studies with parameter values leading to chaotic behavior. Special attention is given to the stability of synchronized states and the role of multi-stability and bifurcations, and its implications to loss of synchronization. We highlight the role of Lyapunov exponents, eigenvalues, and Lyapunov functions in guaranteeing local and global stability of the synchronized state. We aim to contribute to a broader understanding of chaos synchronization and its practical applications in diverse fields of knowledge. This text shed light on the control and stability of coupled chaotic systems, offering new perspectives on the synchronization of non-identical systems and the emergence of complex synchronization dynamics.

The detailed feeding and feedback mechanisms of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are not yet well known. For low-luminosity and obscured AGN, as well as late-type galaxies, determining the central black hole (BH) masses is challenging. Our goal with the GATOS sample is to study circum-nuclear regions and better estimate BH masses with more precision than scaling relations offer. Using ALMA's high spatial resolution, we resolve CO(3-2) emissions within ~100 pc around the supermassive black hole (SMBH) in seven GATOS galaxies to estimate their BH masses when sufficient gas is present. We study seven bright ($L_{AGN}(14-150\mathrm{keV}) \geq 10^{42}\mathrm{erg/s}$), nearby (<28 Mpc) galaxies from the GATOS core sample. For comparison, we searched the literature for previous BH mass estimates and made additional calculations using the \mbh~ - $\sigma$ relation and the fundamental plane of BH activity. We developed a supervised machine learning method to estimate BH masses from position-velocity diagrams or first-moment maps using ALMA CO(3-2) observations. Numerical simulations with a wide range of parameters created the training, validation, and test sets. Seven galaxies provided enough gas for BH mass estimations: NGC4388, NGC5506, NGC5643, NGC6300, NGC7314, NGC7465, and NGC~7582. Our BH masses, ranging from 6.39 to 7.18 log$(M_{BH}/M_\odot)$, align with previous estimates. Additionally, our machine learning method provides robust error estimations with confidence intervals and offers greater potential than scaling relations. This work is a first step toward an automated \mbh estimation method using machine learning.

After the fundamental work of Livschitz in [1; 2], various research directions emerged, among which the following stand out: (i) the study of cocycles with values in groups and semigroups beyond R, as well as the investigation of corresponding regularity results; (ii) the analysis of how a certain degree of regularity of the cocycle can confer corresponding regularity to the solution of the cohomological equation; and (iii) the study of higher-dimensional cohomology naturally associated with the action of groups other than Z or R. Understanding the processes that drive the morphology and kinematics of molecular gas in galaxies is crucial for comprehending star formation and, ultimately, galaxy evolution. Using data obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we study the behavior of the warm molecular gas at temperatures of hundreds of Kelvin and the cold molecular gas at tens of Kelvin in the galaxy MCG$-$05$-$23$-$16, which hosts an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of this spheroidal galaxy, classified in the optical as S0, show a dust lane resembling a nuclear spiral and a surrounding ring. These features are also detected in CO(2$-$1) and H2, and their morphologies and kinematics are consistent with rotation plus local inward gas motions along the kinematic minor axis in the presence of a nuclear bar. The H2 transitions 0-0 S(3), 0-0 S(4), and 0-0 S(5), which trace warmer and more excited gas, show more disrupted kinematics than 0-0 S(1) and 0-0 S(2), including clumps of high-velocity dispersion (of up to $\sim$ 160 km/s), in regions devoid of CO(2$-$1). The kinematics of one of these clumps, located at $\sim$ 350 pc westward from the nucleus, are consistent with outflowing gas, possibly driven by localized star formation traced by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at 11.3 ${\mu}$m. Overall, we observe a stratification of the molecular gas, with the colder gas located in the nuclear spiral, ring, and connecting arms, while most warmer gas with higher velocity-dispersion fills the inter-arm space. The compact jet, approximately 200 pc in size, detected with Very Large Array (VLA) observations, does not appear to significantly affect the distribution and kinematics of the molecular gas, possibly due to its limited intersection with the molecular gas disc., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 2. In the present-day universe, the most massive galaxies are ellipticals located in the cores of galaxy clusters, harboring the heaviest super-massive black holes (SMBHs). However the mechanisms that drive the early growth phase and subsequent transformation of these morphology and kinematics of galaxies remain elusive. Here we report (sub)kiloparsec scale observations of stars, gas, and dust in ADF22.A1, a bright dusty starburst galaxy at z=3.1, hosting a heavily obscured active galactic nucleus and residing in a proto-cluster core. ADF22.A1 is a giant spiral galaxy with the kinematics of a rotating disk with rotation velocity Vrot=530+/-10km/s and diameter larger than 30 kpc. The high specific stellar angular momentum of this system, j*=3400+/-600 kpc km/s, requires a mechanism to effectively spin-up ADF22.A1, indicating the importance of accretion from the cosmic web to supply both gas and angular momentum to galaxies in their early gas-rich starburst phase. In its inner region, gas flows along dust lanes in a bar connected with the bright dusty core and the estimated mass ratio of a bulge to SMBH matches the local relation, suggesting that bars are a key mechanism to shape the early co-evolution of these components. Comparison with cosmological simulations shows that ADF22.A1 will likely evolve into a massive elliptical at the present day, experiencing a significant reduction in angular momentum associated with subsequent galaxy mergers., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures. We present observations of the type-2 Seyfert NGC7172 obtained with the medium-resolution spectrometer (MRS) of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board of the JWST. This galaxy hosts one of the lowest ionised gas mass outflow rates (Mout~0.005 M/yr) in a sample of six AGN with similar bolometric luminosities (log Lbol~44erg/s) within the Galactic Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS). We aim to understand the properties of the ionised gas outflow, mainly using the emission lines from the neon transitions, that cover a broad range of ionisation potentials (IP) from ~20 eV to ~130 eV. We applied parametric and non-parametric methods to characterise the line emission and kinematics. The low excitation lines (IP<25eV, e.g.[NeII]) trace the rotating disc emission. The high excitation lines (IP>90eV, e.g.[NeV]), which are likely photoionised exclusively by the AGN, are expanding in the direction nearly perpendicular to the disc of the galaxy, with maximum projected velocities of ~350-500 km/s. In particular, [NeV] and [NeVI] lines reveal a biconical ionised gas outflow emerging N-S from the nuclear region, extending at least ~2.5"N and 3.8"S (projected distance of ~450 and 680 pc). Most of the emission arising in the northern part of the cone was not previously detected due to obscuration. Given the almost face-on orientation of the outflow and the almost edge-on orientation of the galaxy, NGC7172 may be a case of weak coupling. Nevertheless, we found evidence for positive feedback in two distinct outflowing clumps at projected distances of 3.1" and 4.3" (i.e. ~560 and 780 pc) SW from the AGN. We estimated a star formation rate in these regions using the [NeII] and [NeIII] luminosities of 0.08 M/yr, that is ~10% of that found in the circumnuclear ring. The ionisation cones of NGC5728 have a deficit of molecular gas based on millimetre observations of CO(2-1) emission. Although photoionisation from the active nucleus may lead to suppression of this transition, warm molecular gas can still be present. We report the detection of eight mid-infrared rotational H$_2$ lines throughout the central kiloparsec, including the ionisation cones, using integral field spectroscopic observations with JWST/MIRI MRS. The H$_2$ line ratios, characteristic of a power-law temperature distribution, indicate that the gas is warmest where it enters the ionisation cone through disk rotation, suggestive of shock excitation. In the nucleus, where the data can be combined with an additional seven ro-vibrational H$_2$ transitions, we find that moderate velocity (30 km s$^{-1}$) shocks in dense ($10^5$ cm$^{-3}$) gas, irradiated by an external UV field ($G_0 = 10^3$), do provide a good match to the full set. The warm molecular gas in the ionisation cone that is traced by the H$_2$ rotational lines has been heated to temperatures $>200$ K. Outside of the ionisation cone the molecular gas kinematics are undisturbed. However, within the ionisation cone, the kinematics are substantially perturbed, indicative of a radial flow, but one that is quantitatively different from the ionised lines. We argue that this outflow is in the plane of the disk, implying a short 50 pc acceleration zone up to speeds of about 400 km s$^{-1}$ followed by an extended deceleration over $\sim$700 pc where it terminates. The deceleration is due to both the radially increasing galaxy mass, and mass-loading as ambient gas in the disk is swept up., Comment: A&A accepted; 16 pages

We use a sample of 64 nearby (D=7-45 Mpc) disk galaxies including 45 AGN and 19 non-AGN, that have high spatial resolution multiline CO observations obtained with the ALMA and/or PdBI arrays to study the distribution of cold molecular gas in their circumunuclear disks (CND). We analyze whether the concentration of cold molecular gas changes as a function of the X-ray luminosity in the 2-10 keV range ($L_{\rm X}$). We also study the concentration of the hot molecular gas using NIR data obtained for the H2 1-0S(1) line. We find a turnover in the distribution of the cold molecular gas concentration as a function of $L_{\rm X}$ with a breakpoint which divides the sample into two branches: the AGN build-up branch ($L_{\rm X}\leq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) and the AGN feedback branch ($L_{\rm X}\geq10^{41.5\pm0.3}$erg/s) . Lower luminosity AGN and non-AGN of the AGN build-up branch show high cold molecular gas concentrations and centrally peaked radial profiles on nuclear ($r\leq50$~pc) scales. Higher luminosity AGN of the AGN feedback branch, show a sharp decrease in the concentration of molecular gas and flat or inverted radial profiles. The cold molecular gas concentration index ($CCI$), defined as the ratio of surface densities at $r\leq50$~pc and $r\leq200$~pc , namely $CCI \equiv$~log$_{\rm 10}(\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 50}/\Sigma^{\rm gas}_{\rm 200}$), spans a factor ~4-5 between the galaxies lying at the high end of the AGN build-up branch and the galaxies of the AGN feedback branch. The concentration and radial distributions of the hot molecular gas in our sample follow less extreme trends as a function of the X-ray luminosity. The superb image quality, stability and sensitivity of the JWST permit deconvolution techniques to be pursued with a fidelity unavailable to ground-based observations. We present an assessment of several deconvolution approaches to improve image quality and mitigate effects of the complex JWST point spread function (PSF). The optimal deconvolution method is determined by using WebbPSF to simulate JWST's complex PSF and MIRISim to simulate multi-band JWST/Mid-Infrared Imager Module (MIRIM) observations of a toy model of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Five different deconvolution algorithms are tested: (1) Kraken deconvolution, (2) Richardson-Lucy, (3) Adaptive Imaging Deconvolution Algorithm, (4) Sparse regularization with the Condat-V\~u algorithm, and (5) Iterative Wiener Filtering and Thresholding. We find that Kraken affords the greatest FWHM reduction of the nuclear source of our MIRISim observations for the toy AGN model while retaining good photometric integrity across all simulated wavebands. Applying Kraken to Galactic Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) multi-band JWST/MIRIM observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, we find that the algorithm reduces the FWHM of the nuclear source by a factor of 1.6-2.2 across all five filters. Kraken images facilitate detection of a SE to NW $\thicksim$2".5 ($\thicksim$470 pc, PA $\simeq$115\deg) extended nuclear emission, especially in the longest wavelengths. We present a comprehensive study of the physical origin of radio emission in optical quasars at redshifts z < 2.5. We focus particularly on the associations between compact radio emission, dust reddening, and outflows identified in our earlier work. Leveraging the deepest low-frequency radio data available to date (LoTSS Deep DR1), we achieve radio detection fractions of up to 94%, demonstrating the virtual ubiquity of radio emission in quasars, and a continuous distribution in radio loudness. Through our analysis of radio properties, combined with spectral energy distribution modeling of multiwavelength photometry, we establish that the primary source of radio emission in quasars is the AGN, rather than star formation. Modeling the dust reddening of the accretion disk emission shows a continuous increase in radio detection in quasars as a function of the reddening parameter E(B-V), suggesting a causal link between radio emission and dust reddening. Confirming previous findings, we observe that the radio excess in red quasars is most pronounced for sources with compact radio morphologies and intermediate radio loudness. We find a significant increase in [Oiii] and Civ outflow velocities for red quasars not seen in our control sample, with particularly powerful [Oiii] winds in those around the radio-quiet/radio-loud threshold. Based on the combined characterisation of radio, reddening, and wind properties in our sample, we favor a model in which the compact radio emission observed in quasars originates in compact radio jets and their interaction with a dusty, circumnuclear environment. Our results align with the theory that jet-induced winds and shocks resulting from this interaction are the origin of the enhanced radio emission in red quasars. We present the first eight months of data from our secondary target program within the ongoing Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. Our program uses a mid-infrared and optical colour selection to preferentially target dust-reddened QSOs that would have otherwise been missed by the nominal DESI QSO selection. So far we have obtained optical spectra for 3038 candidates, of which ~70% of the high-quality objects (those with robust redshifts) are visually confirmed to be Type 1 QSOs, consistent with the expected fraction from the main DESI QSO survey. By fitting a dust-reddened blue QSO composite to the QSO spectra, we find they are well-fitted by a normal QSO with up to Av~4 mag of line-of-sight dust extinction. Utilizing radio data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) DR2, we identify a striking positive relationship between the amount of line-of-sight dust extinction towards a QSO and the radio detection fraction, that is not driven by radio-loud systems, redshift and/or luminosity effects. This demonstrates an intrinsic connection between dust reddening and the production of radio emission in QSOs, whereby the radio emission is most likely due to low-powered jets or winds/outflows causing shocks in a dusty environment. On the basis of this evidence we suggest that red QSOs may represent a transitional "blow-out" phase in the evolution of QSOs, where winds and outflows evacuate the dust and gas to reveal an unobscured blue QSO., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures, 6 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We present an X-ray spectro-polarimetric analysis of the bright Seyfert galaxy IC 4329A. The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observed the source for ~500 ks, supported by XMM-Newton (~60 ks) and NuSTAR (~80 ks) exposures. We detect polarisation in the 2-8 keV band with 2.97 sigma confidence. We report a polarisation degree of $3.3\pm1.1$ per cent and a polarisation angle of $78\pm10$ degrees (errors are 1 sigma confidence). The X-ray polarisation is consistent with being aligned with the radio jet, albeit partially due to large uncertainties on the radio position angle. We jointly fit the spectra from the three observatories to constrain the presence of a relativistic reflection component. From this, we obtain constraints on the inclination angle to the inner disc (< 39 degrees at 99 per cent confidence) and the disc inner radius (< 11 gravitational radii at 99 per cent confidence), although we note that modelling systematics in practice add to the quoted statistical error. Our spectro-polarimetric modelling indicates that the 2-8 keV polarisation is consistent with being dominated by emission directly observed from the X-ray corona, but the polarisation of the reflection component is completely unconstrained. Our constraints on viewer inclination and polarisation degree tentatively favour more asymmetric, possibly out-flowing, coronal geometries that produce more highly polarised emission, but the coronal geometry is unconstrained at the 3 sigma level., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 13 pages, 9 figures

We present a spatially-resolved study of the ionised gas in the central 2 kpc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2110 and investigate the role of its moderate luminosity radio jet (kinetic radio power of $P_\mathrm{jet} = 2.3 \times 10^{43}\mathrm{erg\ s^{-1}}$). We use new optical integral-field observations taken with the MEGARA spectrograph at GTC. We fit the emission lines with a maximum of two Gaussian components, except at the AGN position where we used three. Aided by existing stellar kinematics, we use the observed velocity and velocity dispersion of the emission lines to classify the different kinematic components. The disc component is characterised by lines with $\sigma \sim 60-200\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. The outflow component has typical values of $\sigma \sim 700\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ and is confined to the central 400 pc, which is coincident with linear part of the radio jet detected in NGC 2110. At the AGN position, the [O III]$\lambda$5007 line shows high velocity components reaching at least $1000\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. This and the high velocity dispersions indicate the presence of outflowing gas outside the galaxy plane. Spatially-resolved diagnostic diagrams reveal mostly LI(N)ER-like excitation in the outflow and some regions in the disc, which could be due to the presence of shocks. However, there is also Seyfert-like excitation beyond the bending of the radio jet, probably tracing the edge of the ionisation cone that intercepts with the disc of the galaxy. NGC 2110 follows well the observational trends between the outflow properties and the jet radio power found for a few nearby Seyfert galaxies. All these pieces of information suggest that part of observed ionised outflow in NGC 2110 might be driven by the radio jet. However, the radio jet was bent at radial distances of 200 pc (in projection) from the AGN, and beyond there, most of the gas in the galaxy disc is rotating., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures, 3 tables. Observations of the nearby universe reveal an increasing fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with decreasing projected separation for close galaxy pairs, relative to control galaxies. This implies galaxy interactions play a role in enhancing AGN activity. However, the picture at higher redshift is less established, partly due to limited spectroscopic redshifts. We combine spectroscopic surveys with photometric redshift probability distribution functions for galaxies in the CANDELS and COSMOS surveys, to produce the largest ever sample of galaxy pairs used in an AGN fraction calculation for cosmic noon ($0.5 10^42 erg/s) or infrared-selected AGN in major (mass ratios up to 4:1) or minor (4:1 to 10:1) galaxy pairs. However, defining the most obscured AGN as those detected in the infrared but not in X-rays, we observe a trend of increasing obscured AGN enhancement at decreasing separations. The peak enhancement, relative to isolated controls, is a factor of 2.08+/-0.61 for separations <25kpc. Our simulations with mock data, indicates this could be a lower limit of the true enhancement. If confirmed with improved infrared imaging (e.g., with JWST) and redshifts (e.g., with forthcoming multi-object spectrograph surveys), this would suggest that galaxy interactions play a role in enhancing the most obscured black hole growth at cosmic noon., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the hot molecular and warm ionised gas kinematics for 33 nearby ($0.001\lesssim z\lesssim0.056$) X-ray selected active galaxies using the H$_2 2.1218 \mu$m and Br$\gamma$ emission lines observed in the K-band with the Gemini Near-Infrared Field Spectrograph (NIFS). The observations cover the inner 0.04$-$2 kpc of each AGN at spatial resolutions of 4$-$250 pc with a velocity resolution of $\sigma_{\rm inst}\approx$20 ${\rm km s^{-1}}$. We find that 31 objects (94 per cent) present a kinematically disturbed region (KDR) seen in ionised gas, while such regions are observed in hot molecular gas for 25 galaxies (76 per cent). We interpret the KDR as being due to outflows with masses of 10$^2-$10$^7$ M$_\odot$ and 10$^0-$10$^4$ M$_\odot$ for the ionised and hot molecular gas, respectively. The ranges of mass-outflow rates ($\dot{M}_{\rm out}$) and kinetic power ($\dot{E}_{\rm K}$) of the outflows are 10$^{-3}-$10$^{1}$ M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$ and $\sim$10$^{37}$$-$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for the ionised gas outflows, and 10$^{-5}$$-$10$^{-2}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and 10$^{35}$$-$10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for the hot molecular gas outflows. The median coupling efficiency in our sample is $\dot{E}_{K}/L_{\rm bol}\approx1.8\times10^{-3}$ and the estimated momentum fluxes of the outflows suggest they are produced by radiation-pressure in low-density environment, with possible contribution from shocks., Comment: 37 pages, published in MNRAS - A few typos in the text and in the label of Fg 1 were corrected in this version

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carbon-based molecules that are ubiquitous in a variety of astrophysical objects and environments. In this work, we use JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of three Seyferts to compare their nuclear PAH emission with that of star-forming regions. This study represents the first of its kind using sub-arcsecond angular resolution data of local luminous Seyferts (Lbol>10^44.46 erg/s) on a wide wavelength coverage (4.9-28.1 micron). We present an analysis of their nuclear PAH properties by comparing the observed ratios with PAH diagnostic model grids, derived from theoretical spectra. Our results show that a suite of PAH features is present in the innermost parts (~0.45 arcsec at 12 micron; in the inner ~142-245 pc) of luminous Seyfert galaxies. We find that the nuclear regions of AGN lie at different positions of the PAH diagnostic diagrams, whereas the SF regions are concentrated around the average values of SF galaxies. In particular, we find that the nuclear PAH emission mainly originates in neutral PAHs. In contrast, PAH emission originating in the SF regions favours ionised PAH grains. The observed PAH ratios in the nuclear region of AGN-dominated galaxy NGC 6552 indicate the presence of larger-sized PAH molecules compared with those of the SF regions. Therefore, our results provide evidence that the AGN have a significant impact on the ionization state (and probably the size) of the PAH grains on scales of ~142-245 pc., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. A key component of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey validation (SV) is a detailed visual inspection (VI) of the optical spectroscopic data to quantify key survey metrics. In this paper we present results from VI of the quasar survey using deep coadded SV spectra. We show that the majority (~70%) of the main-survey targets are spectroscopically confirmed as quasars, with ~16% galaxies, ~6% stars, and ~8% low-quality spectra lacking reliable features. A non-negligible fraction of the quasars are misidentified by the standard spectroscopic pipeline but we show that the majority can be recovered using post-pipeline "afterburner" quasar-identification approaches. We combine these "afterburners" with our standard pipeline to create a modified pipeline to improve the overall quasar yield. At the depth of the main DESI survey both pipelines achieve a good-redshift purity (reliable redshifts measured within 3000 km/s) of ~99%; however, the modified pipeline recovers ~94% of the visually inspected quasars, as compared to ~86% from the standard pipeline. We demonstrate that both pipelines achieve an median redshift precision and accuracy of ~100 km/s and ~70 km/s, respectively. We constructed composite spectra to investigate why some quasars are missed by the standard spectroscopic pipeline and find that they are more host-galaxy dominated (i.e., distant analogs of "Seyfert galaxies") and/or dust reddened than the standard-pipeline quasars. We present JWST/MIRI MRS spectroscopy of NGC7319, the largest galaxy in the Stephan's Quintet, observed as part of the Early Release Observations (ERO). NGC7319 hosts a type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a low-power radio jet (L_1.4GHz=3.3x10^22 W Hz^-1) with two asymmetric radio hotspots at 430 pc (N2) and 1.5 kpc (S2) projected distances from the unresolved radio core. The MRS data suggest that the molecular material in the disk of the galaxy decelerates the jet and causes this length asymmetry. We find enhanced emission from warm and hot H_2 (T_w=330+-40 K, T_h=900+-60 K) and ionized gas at the intersection between the jet axis and dust lanes in the disk. This emission is coincident with the radio hotspot N2, the hotspot closer to the core, suggesting that the jet-interstellar medium (ISM) interaction decelerates the jet. Conversely, the mid-infrared emission at the more distant hotspot is fainter, more highly ionized, and with lower H_2 excitation, suggesting a more diffuse atomic environment where the jet can progress to farther distances. At the N2 radio hotspot, the ionized gas mass (M_ion=(2.4-12)x10^5 Msun) is comparable to that of the warm H_2, but the former is more turbulent (sigma_ion~300 vs. sigma_H2~150 km/s), so the mechanical energy of the ionized gas is ~1.3-10 times higher. From these estimates, we find that only <1% of the jet energy remains as mechanical energy in these two ISM phases at N2. We also find extended (r>0.3-1.5 kpc) high-ionization emission ([MgV], [NeVI], and [NeV]) close to the radio hotspots. This initial analysis of NGC7319 shows the potential of MIRI/MRS to investigate the AGN feedback mechanisms due to radio jets and their radiation field in the, often heavily dust-enshrouded, central regions of galaxies. Broad Absorption Line Quasars (BALQSOs) show strong signatures of powerful outflows, with the potential to alter the cosmic history of their host galaxies. These signatures are only seen in ~10% of optically selected quasars, although the fraction significantly increases in IR and radio selected samples. A proven physical explanation for this observed fraction has yet to be found, along with a determination of why this fraction increases at radio wavelengths. We present the largest sample of radio matched BALQSOs using the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 and employ it to investigate radio properties of BALQSOs. Within the DR2 footprint, there are 3537 BALQSOs from Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR12 with continuum signal to noise >5. We find radio-detections for 1108 BALQSOs, with an important sub-population of 120 LoBALs, an unprecedented sample size for radio matched BALQSOs given the LoTSS sky coverage to date. BALQSOs are a radio-quiet population that show an increase of $\times 1.50$ radio-detection fraction compared to non-BALQSOs. LoBALs show an increase of $\times 2.22$ that of non-BALQSO quasars. We show that this detection fraction correlates with wind-strength, reddening and C_{IV} emission properties of BALQSOs and that these features may be connected, although no single property can fully explain the enhanced radio detection fraction. We create composite spectra for sub-classes of BALQSOs based on wind strength and colour, finding differences in the absorption profiles of radio-detected and radio-undetected sources, particularly for LoBALs. Overall, we favour a wind-ISM interaction explanation for the increased radio-detection fraction of BALQSOs., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

We have recently found fundamental differences in the radio properties of red quasars when compared to typical blue quasars. In this paper we use X-shooter data, providing spectral coverage from $\sim 3000-25000$ Ang, of a sample of 40 red and blue luminous quasars at $1.45

[Abridged] Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are thought to be responsible for the suppression of star formation in massive ~10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ galaxies. While this process is a key feature in numerical simulations, it is not yet unambiguously confirmed in observational studies. Characterization of the star formation rate (SFR) in AGN host galaxies is challenging as AGN light contaminates most SFR tracers. We aim to obtain and compare SFR estimates from different tracers for AGN host galaxies in the Close AGN Reference Survey (CARS) to provide new observational insights. We construct integrated panchromatic spectral energy distributions (SED) to measure the FIR luminosity as a tracer for the recent (< 100 Myr) SFR. In addition, we use integral-field unit observation of the CARS targets to employ the H$\alpha$ luminosity decontaminated by AGN excitation as a proxy for the current (< 5 Myr) SFR. We find that significant differences in specific SFR of the AGN host galaxies as compared with the larger galaxy population disappear once cold gas mass, in addition to stellar mass, is used to predict the SFR. We identify individual galaxies with a significant difference in their SFR which can be related to a recent enhancement or decline in their SFR history that might be related to various processes including interactions, gas consumption, outflows and AGN feedback. AGN can occur in various stages of galaxy evolution which makes it difficult to relate the SFR solely to the impact of the AGN. We do not find any strong evidence for global positive or negative AGN feedback in the CARS sample. However, there is tentative evidence that 1) the relative orientation of the AGN engine with respect to the host galaxies might alter the efficiency of AGN feedback and 2) the recent SFH is an additional tool to identify rapid changes in galaxy growth driven by the AGN or other processes., Comment: Resubmitted to A&A after minor revision, 24 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables, and appendix. A non-negligible fraction of quasars are red at optical wavelengths, indicating (in the majority of cases) that the accretion disc is obscured by a column of dust which extinguishes the shorter-wavelength blue emission. In this paper, we summarize recent work by our group, where we find fundamental differences in the radio properties of SDSS optically-selected red quasars. We also present new analyses, using a consistent color-selected quasar parent sample matched to four radio surveys (FIRST, VLA Stripe 82, VLA COSMOS 3 GHz, and LoTSS DR1) across a frequency range 144 MHz-3 GHz and four orders of magnitude in radio flux. We show that red quasars have enhanced small-scale radio emission (~kpc) that peaks around the radio-quiet threshold (defined as the ratio of 1.4 GHz luminosity to 6 micron luminosity) across the four radio samples. Exploring the potential mechanisms behind this enhancement, we rule out star-formation and propose either small-scale synchrotron jets, frustrated jets, or dusty winds interacting with the interstellar medium; the latter two scenarios would provide a more direct connection between opacity (dust; gas) and the production of the radio emission. In modern models and simulations of galactic evolution, the star formation in massive galaxies is regulated by an ad hoc active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback process. However, the physics and the extension of such effects on the star formation history of galaxies is matter of vivid debate. In order to shed some light in the AGN effects over the star formation, we analyzed the inner 500$\times$500pc of a sample of 14 Seyfert galaxies using GMOS and MUSE integral field spectroscopy. We fitted the continuum spectra in order to derive stellar age, metallicity, velocity and velocity dispersion maps in each source. After stacking our sample and averaging their properties, we found that the contribution of young SP, as well as that of AGN featureless continuum both peak at the nucleus. The fraction of intermediate-age SPs is smaller in the nucleus if compared to outer regions, and the contribution of old SPs vary very little within our field of view (FoV). We also found no variation of velocity dispersion or metallicity within our FoV. Lastly, we detected an increase in the dust reddening towards the center of the galaxies. These results lead us to conclude that AGN phenomenon is usually related to a recent star formation episode in the circumnuclear region., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures. We present the $NuSTAR$ extragalactic survey of the $James$ $Webb$ $Space$ $Telescope$ ($JWST$) North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) Time-Domain Field. The survey covers a $\sim$0.16 deg$^2$ area with a total exposure of 681 ks acquired in a total of nine observations from three epochs. The survey sensitivities at 20% of the area are 2.39, 1.14, 2.76, 1.52, and 5.20 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ in the 3-24, 3-8, 8-24, 8-16, and 16-24 keV bands, respectively. The NEP survey is one of the most sensitive extragalactic surveys with $NuSTAR$ so far. A total of 33 sources were detected above 95% reliability in at least one of the five bands. We present the number counts, log$N$-log$S$, measured in the hard X-ray 8-24 and 8-16 keV bands, uniquely accessible by $NuSTAR$ down to such faint fluxes. We performed source detection on the XMM-$Newton$ and $Chandra$ observations of the same field to search for soft X-ray counterparts of each $NuSTAR$ detection. The soft band positions were used to identify optical and infrared associations. We present the X-ray properties (hardness ratio and luminosity) and optical-to-X-ray properties of the detected sources. The measured fraction of candidate Compton-thick (N$\rm _H\ge10^{24} cm^{-2}$) active galactic nuclei, derived from the hardness ratio, is between 3% to 27%. We study the impact of AGN ionised outflows on star formation in high-redshift AGN hosts, by combining NIR IFS observations, mapping the H$\alpha$ emission and [OIII] outflows, with matched-resolution observations of the rest-frame FIR emission. We present high-resolution ALMA Band 7 observations of eight X-ray selected AGN at z~2 from the SUPER sample, targeting the rest-frame ~260 um continuum at ~2 kpc (0.2'') resolution. We detected 6 out of 8 targets with S/N>10 in the ALMA maps, with continuum flux densities F = 0.27-2.58 mJy and FIR half-light radii Re = 0.8-2.1 kpc. The FIR Re of our sample are comparable to other AGN and star-forming galaxies at a similar redshift from the literature. However, we find that the mean FIR size in X-ray AGN (Re = 1.16+/- 0.11 kpc) is slightly smaller than in non-AGN (Re = 1.69+/-0.13 kpc). From SED fitting, we find that the main contribution to the 260 um flux density is dust heated by star formation, with < 4% contribution from AGN-heated dust and < 1% from synchrotron emission. The majority of our sample show different morphologies for the FIR (mostly due to reprocessed stellar emission) and the ionised gas emission (H$\alpha$ and [OIII], mostly due to AGN emission). This could be due to the different locations of dust and ionised gas, the different sources of the emission (stars and AGN), or the effect of dust obscuration. We are unable to identify any residual H$\alpha$ emission, above that dominated by AGN, that could be attributed to star formation. Under the assumption that the FIR emission is a reliable tracer of obscured star formation, we find that the obscured star formation activity in these AGN host galaxies is not clearly affected by the ionised outflows. However, we cannot rule out that star formation suppression is happening on smaller spatial scales than the ones we probe with our observations (< 2 kpc) or on different timescales., Comment: 32 pages, 13 figures. We compare the contribution of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and star-formation towards dust heating in sub-mm galaxies (SMGs). We have used ALMA at $0."1$ resolution to image a complete flux-limited sample of seven sub-mm sources previously shown to have spectral energy distributions (SEDs) that were as well-fitted by obscured AGN as star-forming galaxy templates. Indeed, two sub-mm sources were known to be quasars from their absorbed X-ray emission. We find the sub-mm sizes of all SMGs to be small ($\approx1-2$kpc) and generally $\sim3$ times smaller than any host detected in the Near-Infra-Red (NIR). In all cases, the five SMGs are comparable in sub-mm size to the two known quasars and four $z\approx6$ quasars, also observed with ALMA. We detect no evidence of diffuse spiral arms in this complete sample. We then convert the Far-Infra-Red (FIR) luminosities to star-formation rate (SFR) surface densities and find that the SMGs occupy the same range as the known quasars in our sample. We conclude that in terms of sub-mm size, extent relative to host and SFR density as well as luminosity and Mid-IR (MIR) colour, there is little distinction between the SMGs and sub-mm bright quasars. Finally, we present preliminary evidence that SMGs with higher MIR luminosities and sub-mm loud quasars tend to have dust components that range to hotter temperatures than their less luminous SMG counterparts. In light of these results, we continue to suggest that luminous SMGs may host dust-absorbed quasars that may simultaneously dominate the FIR and hard X-ray backgrounds., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures. We compare mid-IR and ALMA far-IR images of 12 nearby Seyferts selected from GATOS. The mid-IR unresolved emission contributes more than 60% of the nuclear emission in most galaxies. By contrast, the ALMA 870micron continuum emission is mostly resolved and typically along the torus equatorial direction (Paper I, Garcia-Burillo et al. 2021). The Eddington ratios and nuclear hydrogen column densities NH of half the sample are favorable to launching polar and/or equatorial dusty winds, according to simulations. Six show mid-IR extended emission in the polar direction as traced by the NLR and perpendicular to the ALMA emission. In a few, the nuclear NH might be too high to uplift large quantities of dusty material along the polar direction. Five galaxies have low NH and/or Eddington ratios and thus polar dusty winds are not likely. We generate new CAT3D-WIND disk-wind model images. At low wind-to-disk cloud ratios the far-IR model images have disk- and ring-like morphologies. The X-shape associated with dusty winds is seen better in the far-IR at intermediate-high inclinations for the extended-wind configurations. In most models, the mid-IR emission comes from the inner part of the disk/cone. Extended bi-conical and one-sided polar mid-IR emission is seen in extended-wind configurations and high wind-to-disk cloud ratios. When convolved to our resolution, the model images reproduce qualitative aspects of the observed morphologies. Low-intermediate wind-to-disk ratios are required to account for the large fractions of unresolved mid-IR emission. This work and Paper I provide observational support for the torus+wind scenario. The wind component is more relevant at high Eddington ratios and/or AGN luminosities, and polar dust emission is predicted at NH of up to $10^{24}$cm$^{-2}$. We present high-resolution ($\sim$2.4\,kpc) ALMA band 7 observations (rest-frame $\lambda \sim 250\mu$m) of three powerful z$\sim$2.5 quasars ($L_{\rm bol}=10^{47.3}$-$10^{47.5}$ ergs s$^{-1}$). These targets have previously been reported as showing evidence for suppressed star formation based on cavities in the narrow H$\alpha$ emission at the location of outflows traced with [O~{\sc iii}] emission. Here we combine the ALMA observations with a re-analysis of the VLT/SINFONI data to map the rest-frame far-infrared emission, H$\alpha$ emission, and [O~{\sc iii}] emission. In all targets we observe high velocity [O~{\sc iii}] gas (i.e., W80$\sim$1000--2000\,km\,s$^{-1}$) across the whole galaxy. We do not identify any H$\alpha$ emission that is free from contamination from AGN-related processes; however, based on SED analyses, we show that the ALMA data contains a significant dust-obscured star formation component in two out of the three systems. This dust emission is found to be extended over $\approx$1.5--5.5\,kpc in the nuclear regions, overlaps with the previously reported H$\alpha$ cavities and is co-spatial with the peak in surface brightness of the [O~{\sc iii}] outflows. In summary, within the resolution and sensitivity limits of the data, we do not see any evidence for a instantaneous shut down of in-situ star formation caused directly by the outflows. However, similar to the conclusions of previous studies and based on our measured star formation rates, we do not rule out that the global host galaxy star formation could be suppressed on longer timescales by the cumulative effect of quasar episodes during the growth of these massive black holes., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Red quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a subset of the quasar population with colours consistent with reddening due to intervening dust. Recent work has demonstrated that red QSOs show special radio properties that fundamentally distinguish them from normal blue QSOs, specifically a higher incidence of low-power radio emission (1.4 GHz luminosities L$_{\rm 1.4} \approx 10^{25}$ - $10^{27}$ W Hz$^{-1}$) that is physically compact when imaged by arcsecond-resolution radio surveys such as FIRST. In this work, we present e-MERLIN imaging of a set of intermediate-redshift ($1.0 2$ kpc). We report a statistically significant difference in the incidence of extended kpc-scale emission in red QSOs. From an analysis of the radio size distributions of the sample, we find that the excess radio emission in red QSOs can be attributed to structures that are confined to galaxy scales ($< 10$ kpc), while we confirm previous results that red and normal QSOs have similar incidences of radio jets and lobes on circumgalactic or larger scales ($> 10$ kpc). Our results indicate that the primary mechanism that generates the enhanced radio emission in red QSOs is not directly connected with the nuclear engine or accretion disc, but is likely to arise from extended components such as AGN-driven jets or winds., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 20 pages, 13 figures; two additional figures available as online material from the Journal

The relation between nuclear ($\lesssim$ 50 pc) star formation and nuclear galactic activity is still elusive: theoretical models predict a link between the two, but it is unclear whether active galactic nuclei (AGNs) should appear at the same time, before or after nuclear star formation activity is ongoing. We present a study of this relation in a complete, volume-limited sample of nine of the most luminous ($\log L_{\rm 14-195 keV} > 10^{42.5}$ erg/s) local AGNs (the LLAMA sample), including a sample of 18 inactive control galaxies (6 star-forming; 12 passive) that are matched by Hubble type, stellar mass (9.5 $\lesssim$ log M_star/M_sun $\lesssim$ 10.5), inclination and distance. This allows us to calibrate our methods on the control sample and perform a differential analysis between the AGN and control samples. We perform stellar population synthesis on VLT/X-SHOOTER spectra in an aperture corresponding to a physical radius of $\approx$ 150 pc. We find young ($\lesssim$ 30 Myr) stellar populations in seven out of nine AGNs and in four out of six star-forming control galaxies. In the non-star-forming control population, in contrast, only two out of twelve galaxies show such a population. We further show that these young populations are not indicative of ongoing star-formation, providing evidence for models that see AGN activity as a consequence of nuclear star formation. Based on the similar nuclear star-formation histories of AGNs and star-forming control galaxies, we speculate that the latter may turn into the former for some fraction of their time. Under this assumption, and making use of the volume-completeness of our sample, we infer that the AGN phase lasts for about 5 % of the nuclear starburst phase., Comment: 53 pages, 44 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

We present the first results of the Galaxy Activity, Torus and Outflow Survey (GATOS), a project aimed at understanding the properties of the dusty molecular tori and their connection to the host galaxy in nearby Seyfert galaxies. Our project expands the range of AGN luminosities and Eddington ratios covered by previous surveys of Seyferts conducted by ALMA and allows us to study the gas feeding and feedback cycle in a combined sample of 19 Seyferts. We used ALMA to obtain new images of the emission of molecular gas and dust using the CO(3-2) and HCO+(4-3) lines as well as their underlying continuum emission at 870 microns with high spatial resolutions (0.1'' ~ 7 - 13 pc) in the CND of 10 nearby (D < 28 Mpc) Seyfert galaxies. Our new ALMA observations detect 870 micron continuum and CO line emission from spatially resolved disks located around the AGN in all the sources. The bulk of the continuum flux can be accounted for by thermal emission from dust in the majority of the targets. For most of the sources the disks show a preponderant orientation perpendicular to the AGN wind axes, as expected for dusty molecular tori. The median diameters and molecular gas masses of the tori are ~ 42 pc, and ~ 6 x 10**5 Msun, respectively. We find a positive correlation between the line-of-sight gas column densities responsible for the absorption of X-rays and the molecular gas column densities derived from CO towards the AGN in our sources. The radial distributions of molecular gas in the CND of our combined sample show signs of nuclear-scale molecular gas deficits. We also detect molecular outflows in the sources that show the most extreme nuclear-scale gas deficits in our sample. These observations find for the first time supporting evidence that the imprint of AGN feedback is more extreme in higher luminosity and/or higher Eddington ratio Seyfert galaxies., Comment: 41 pages, new version revised and accepted by A&A on the 22nd of June 2021

We use the Gemini NIFS instrument to map the H$_2 2.1218\mu$m and Br$\gamma$ flux distributions in the inner 0.04-2 kpc of a sample of 36 nearby active galaxies ($0.001\lesssim z\lesssim0.056$) at spatial resolutions from 4 to 250 pc. We find extended emission in 34 galaxies. In $\sim$55% of them, the emission in both lines is most extended along the galaxy major axis, while in the other 45% the extent follows a distinct orientation. The emission of H$_2$ is less concentrated than that of Br$\gamma$, presenting a radius that contains half of the flux 60% greater, on average. The H$_2$ emission is driven by thermal processes - X-ray heating and shocks - at most locations for all galaxies, where $0.46$ (seen in 40% of the galaxies), shocks are the main H$_2$ excitation mechanism, while in regions with H$_2$/Br$\gamma<0.4$ (25% of the sample) the H$_2$ emission is produced by fluorescence. The only difference we found between type 1 and type 2 AGN was in the nuclear emission-line equivalent widths, that are smaller in type 1 than in type 2 due to a larger contribution to the continuum from the hot dusty torus in the former. The gas masses in the inner 125 pc radius are in the range $10^1-10^4$ M$_\odot$ for the hot H$_2$ and $10^3-10^6$ M$_\odot$ for the ionised gas and would be enough to power the AGN in our sample for $10^5-10^8$ yr at their current accretion rates., Comment: 21 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Fundamental differences in the radio properties of red quasars (QSOs), as compared to blue QSOs, have been recently discovered, positioning them as a potential key population in the evolution of galaxies and black holes across cosmic time. To elucidate their nature, we exploited a rich compilation of photometry and spectroscopic data to model their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from the UV to the FIR and characterise their emission-line properties. Following a systematic comparison approach, we infer the AGN accretion, obscuration, and host galaxy properties in a sample of ~1800 QSOs at 0.21000 km/s) in red QSOs. We find that red QSOs that exhibit evidence for high-velocity winds present a stronger signature of the infrared excess, suggesting a causal connection between reddening and the presence of hot dust in QSO winds. Measuring the star-forming properties of AGN hosts is key to our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution. However, this topic remains debated, partly due to the difficulties in separating the infrared (i.e. 1--1000 $\mu$m) emission into AGN and star-forming components. Taking advantage of archival far-infrared data from Herschel, we present a new set of AGN and galaxy infrared templates, and introduce the spectral energy distribution fitting code IRAGNSEP. Both can be used to measure infrared host galaxy properties, free of AGN contamination. To build these, we used a sample of 100 local ($z$ < 0.3), low-to-high luminosity AGNs (i.e. $L_{\rm bol}~\sim~10^{42--46}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$), selected from the 105-month Swift - BAT X-ray survey, which have archival Spitzer - IRS spectra and Herschel photometry. We first built a set of seven galaxy templates using a sample of 55 star-forming galaxies selected via infrared diagnostics. Using these templates, combined with a flexible model for the AGN contribution, we extracted the intrinsic infrared emission of our AGN sample. We further demonstrate that we can reduce the diversity in the intrinsic shapes of AGN spectral energy distributions down to a set of three AGN templates, of which two represent AGN continuum, and one represents silicate emission. Our results indicate that, on average, the contribution of AGNs to the far-infrared ($\lambda~\gtrsim$ 50 $\mu$m) is not as high as suggested by some recent work. VANDELS is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high signal to noise, medium resolution spectra of galaxies at redshift between 1 and 6.5. Here we present the final Public Data Release of the VANDELS Survey, comprising 2087 redshift measurements. We give a detailed description of sample selection, observations and data reduction procedures. The final catalogue reaches a target selection completeness of 40% at iAB = 25. The high Signal to Noise ratio of the spectra (above 7 in 80% of the spectra) and the dispersion of 2.5{\AA} allowed us to measure redshifts with high precision, the redshift measurement success rate reaching almost 100%. Together with the redshift catalogue and the reduced spectra, we also provide optical mid-IR photometry and physical parameters derived through SED fitting. The observed galaxy sample comprises both passive and star forming galaxies covering a stellar mass range 8.3< Log(M*/Msolar)<11.7. In this paper we present data from 72 low redshift, hard X-ray selected AGN taken from the {\it Swift}-BAT 58 month catalogue. We utilise spectral energy distribution fitting to the optical to IR photometry in order to estimate host galaxy properties. We compare this observational sample to a volume and flux matched sample of AGN from the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations in order to verify how accurately the simulations can reproduce observed AGN host galaxy properties. After correcting for the known +0.2 dex offset in the SFRs between EAGLE and previous observations, we find agreement in the SFR and X-ray luminosity distributions; however we find that the stellar masses in EAGLE are $0.2 - 0.4$ dex greater than the observational sample, which consequently leads to lower sSFRs. We compare these results to our previous study at high redshift, finding agreement in both the observations and simulations, whereby the widths of sSFR distributions are similar ($\sim0.4-0.6$ dex) and the median of the SFR distributions lie below the star forming main sequence by $\sim0.3-0.5$ dex across all samples. We also use EAGLE to select a sample of AGN host galaxies at high and low redshift and follow their characteristic evolution from $z=8$ to $z=0$. We find similar behaviour between these two samples, whereby star formation is quenched when the black hole goes through its phase of most rapid growth. Utilising EAGLE we find that 23\% of AGN selected at $z\sim0$ are also AGN at high redshift, and that their host galaxies are among the most massive objects in the simulation. Overall we find EAGLE reproduces the observations well, with some minor inconsistencies ($\sim$ 0.2 dex in stellar masses and $\sim$ 0.4 dex in sSFRs)., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the relation between the detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature in the nuclear ($\sim 24-230\,$pc) regions of 22 nearby Seyfert galaxies and the properties of the cold molecular gas. For the former we use ground-based (0.3-0.6" resolution) mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy. The cold molecular gas is traced by ALMA and NOEMA high (0.2-1.1") angular resolution observations of the CO(2-1) transition. Galaxies with a nuclear detection of the $11.3\,\mu$m PAH feature contain more cold molecular gas (median $1.6\times 10^7\,M_\odot$) and have higher column densities ($N({\rm H}_2) = 2 \times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$) over the regions sampled by the mid-IR slits than those without a detection. This suggests that molecular gas plays a role in shielding the PAH molecules in the harsh environments of Seyfert nuclei. Choosing the PAH molecule naphthalene as an illustration, we compute its half-life in the nuclear regions of our sample when exposed to 2.5keV hard X-ray photons. We estimate shorter half-lives for naphthalene in nuclei without a $11.3\,\mu$m PAH detection than in those with a detection. The Spitzer/IRS PAH ratios on circumnuclear scales ($\sim$ 4" $\sim$ 0.25-1.3kpc) are in between model predictions for neutral and partly ionized PAHs. However, Seyfert galaxies in our sample with the highest nuclear H$_2$ column densities are not generally closer to the neutral PAH tracks. This is because in the majority of our sample galaxies, the CO(2-1) emission in the inner $\sim$ 4" is not centrally peaked and in some galaxies traces circumnuclear sites of strong star formation activity. Spatially resolved observations with the MIRI medium-resolution spectrograph (MRS) on the James Webb Space Telescope will be able to distinguish the effects of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) and star formation on the PAH emission in nearby AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have recently used the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) survey to show that red quasars have fundamentally different radio properties to typical blue quasars: a significant (factor $\sim3$) enhancement in the radio-detection fraction, which arises from systems around the radio-quiet threshold with compact ($<5''$) radio morphologies. To gain greater insight into these physical differences, here we use the DR14 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and more sensitive, higher resolution radio data from the Very Large Array (VLA) Stripe 82 (S82) and VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz (C3GHz) surveys. With the S82 data, we perform morphological analyses at a resolution and depth three times that of the FIRST radio survey, and confirm an enhancement in radio-faint and compact red quasars over typical quasars; we now also find tentative evidence for an enhancement in red quasars with slightly extended radio structures ($16-43$ kpc at $z=1.5$). These analyses are complemented by C3GHz, which is deep enough to detect radio emission from star-formation processes. From our data we find that the radio enhancement from red quasars is due to AGN activity on compact scales ($< 43$ kpc) for radio-intermediate-radio-quiet sources ($-5

Red quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a subset of the luminous end of the cosmic population of active galactic nuclei (AGN), most of which are reddened by intervening dust along the line-of-sight towards their central engines. In recent work from our team, we developed a systematic technique to select red QSOs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and demonstrated that they have distinctive radio properties using the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty centimeters (FIRST) radio survey. Here we expand our study using low-frequency radio data from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). With the improvement in depth that LoTSS offers, we confirm key results: compared to a control sample of normal "blue" QSOs matched in redshift and accretion power, red QSOs have a higher radio detection rate and a higher incidence of compact radio morphologies. For the first time, we also demonstrate that these differences arise primarily in sources of intermediate radio-loudness: radio-intermediate red QSOs are $\times 3$ more common than typical QSOs, but the excess diminishes among the most radio-loud and the most radio-quiet systems in our study. We develop Monte-Carlo simulations to explore whether differences in star formation could explain these results, and conclude that, while star formation is an important source of low-frequency emission among radio-quiet QSOs, a population of AGN-driven compact radio sources is the most likely cause for the distinct low-frequency radio properties of red QSOs. We report on the determination of electron densities, and their impact on the outflow masses and rates, measured in the central few hundred parsecs of 11 local luminous active galaxies. We show that the peak of the integrated line emission in the AGN is significantly offset from the systemic velocity as traced by the stellar absorption features, indicating that the profiles are dominated by outflow. In contrast, matched inactive galaxies are characterised by a systemic peak and weaker outflow wing. We present three independent estimates of the electron density in these AGN, discussing the merits of the different methods. The electron density derived from the [SII] doublet is significantly lower than than that found with a method developed in the last decade using auroral and transauroral lines, as well as a recently introduced method based on the ionization parameter. The reason is that, for gas photoionized by an AGN, much of the [SII] emission arises in an extended partially ionized zone where the implicit assumption that the electron density traces the hydrogen density is invalid. We propose ways to deal with this situation and we derive the associated outflow rates for ionized gas, which are in the range 0.001--0.5 M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$ for our AGN sample. We compare these outflow rates to the relation between $\dot{M}_{out}$ and $L_{AGN}$ in the literature, and argue that it may need to be modified and rescaled towards lower mass outflow rates., Comment: accepted by MNRAS; 30 pages (the last 8 of which are extra figures in an appendix). In order to answer some of the major open questions in the fields of supermassive black hole (SMBH) and galaxy evolution, a complete census of SMBH growth, i.e., active galactic nuclei (AGN), is required. Thanks to deep all-sky surveys, such as those by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) missions, this task is now becoming feasible in the nearby Universe. Here, we present a new survey, the Local AGN Survey (LASr), with the goal of identifying AGN unbiased against obscuration and determining the intrinsic Compton-thick (CT) fraction. First, we construct the most complete all-sky sample of galaxies within 100 Mpc from astronomical databases (90% completeness for log M_star/M_sun ~9.4), four times deeper than the current local galaxy reference, the Two Micron All-Sky Survey Redshift Survey (2MRS), which turns out to miss 20% of known luminous AGN. These 49k galaxies serve as parent sample for LASr, called LASr-GPS. It contains 4.3k already known AGN, >=82% of these are estimated to have L(12um) < 10^42.3 erg/s, i.e., are low-luminosity AGN. As a first method for identifying Seyfert-like AGN, we use WISE-based infrared colours, finding 221 galaxies at L(12um) >= 10^42.3 erg/s to host an AGN at 90% reliability, This includes 61 new AGN candidates and implies and optical type 2 fraction of 50 to 71%. We quantify the efficiency of this technique and estimate the total number of AGN with L_int(2-10 keV) >= 10^42 erg/s in the volume to be 362^+145_-116 (8.6^+3.5_-2.8 10^-5 Mpc^-3). X-ray brightness estimates indicate the CT fraction to be 40-55% to explain the Swift non-detections of the infrared selected objects. As part of our KMOS AGN Survey at High-redshift (KASHz), we present spatially-resolved VLT/KMOS and VLT/SINFONI spectroscopic data and ALMA 870$\mu$m continuum imaging of eight $z$=1.4--2.6 moderate AGN ($L_{\rm 2-10 \rm kev}$ = $10^{42} - 10^{45}$ ergs s$^{-1}$). We map [OIII], H$\alpha$ and rest-frame FIR emission to search for any spatial anti-correlation between ionised outflows (traced by the [OIII] line) and star formation (SF; traced by H$\alpha$ and FIR), that has previously been claimed for some high-z AGN and used as evidence for negative and/or positive AGN feedback. Firstly, we conclude that H$\alpha$ is unreliable to map SF inside our AGN host galaxies based on: (i) SF rates inferred from attenuation-corrected H$\alpha$ can lie below those inferred from FIR; (ii) the FIR continuum is more compact than the H$\alpha$ emission by a factor of $\sim 2$ on average; (iii) in half of our sample, we observe significant spatial offsets between the FIR and H$\alpha$ emission, with an average offset of $1.4\pm0.6$ kpc. Secondly, for the five targets with outflows we find no evidence for a spatial anti-correlation between outflows and SF using either H$\alpha$ or FIR as a tracer. This holds for our re-analysis of a famous $z$=1.6 X-ray AGN (`XID 2028') where positive and negative feedback has been previously claimed. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are believed to regulate star formation inside their host galaxies through "AGN feedback". We summarise our on-going study of luminous AGN (z~0.2-3; L_(AGN,bol)>~10^43 erg/s), which is designed to search for observational signatures of feedback by combining observed star-formation rate (SFR) measurements from statistical samples with cosmological model predictions. Using the EAGLE hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, in combination with our Herschel+ALMA surveys, we show that - even in the presence of AGN feedback - we do not necessarily expect to see any relationships between average galaxy-wide SFRs and instantaneous AGN luminosities. We caution that the correlation with stellar mass for both SFR and AGN luminosity can contribute to apparent observed positive trends between these two quantities. On the other hand, the EAGLE simulations, which reproduce our observations, predict that a signature of AGN feedback can be seen in the wide specific SFR distributions of $all$ massive galaxies (not just AGN hosts). Overall, whilst we can not rule out that AGN have an immediate small-scale impact on in-situ star-formation, all of our results are consistent with a feedback model where galaxy-wide in-situ star formation is not rapidly suppressed by AGN, but where the feedback likely acts over a longer timescale than a single AGN episode., Comment: IAU Proceedings No. 356 "Nuclear Activity in Galaxies Across Cosmic Time", M. We present the completed KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ survey $-$ an integral field spectroscopic survey of 739, $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})>9$, galaxies at $0.610.5$). We confirm our first year results of a high rotation dominated fraction (monotonic velocity gradient and $v_\mathrm{rot}$/$\sigma_0 > \sqrt{3.36}$) of 77% for the full KMOS$^\mathrm{3D}$ H$\alpha$sample. The rotation-dominated fraction is a function of both stellar mass and redshift with the strongest evolution measured over the redshift range of the survey for galaxies with $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})<10.5$. We report on our combined analysis of HST, VLT/MUSE, VLT/SINFONI, and ALMA observations of the local Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5728 to investigate in detail the feeding and feedback of the AGN. The datasets simultaneously probe the morphology, excitation, and kinematics of the stars, ionized gas, and molecular gas over a large range of spatial scales (10 pc--10 kpc). NGC 5728 contains a large stellar bar which is driving gas along prominent dust lanes to the inner 1 kpc where the gas settles into a circumnuclear ring. The ring is strongly star forming and contains a substantial population of young stars as indicated by the lowered stellar velocity dispersion and gas excitation consistent with HII regions. We model the kinematics of the ring using the velocity field of the CO (2--1) emission and stars and find it is consistent with a rotating disk. The outer regions of the disk, where the dust lanes meet the ring, show signatures of inflow at a rate of 1 M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$. Inside the ring, we observe three molecular gas components corresponding to the circular rotation of the outer ring, a warped disk, and the nuclear stellar bar. The AGN is driving an ionized gas outflow that reaches a radius of 250 pc with a mass outflow rate of 0.08 M$_{\sun}$ yr$^{-1}$ consistent with its luminosity and scaling relations from previous studies. While we observe distinct holes in CO emission which could be signs of molecular gas removal, we find that largely the AGN is not disrupting the structure of the circumnuclear region., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS; 22 pages + Appendix, 16 figures

We present ALMA observations of the CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) molecular gas transitions and associated (sub)-mm continua of the nearby Seyfert 1.5 galaxy NGC3227 with angular resolutions 0.085-0.21" (7-15pc). On large scales the cold molecular gas shows circular motions as well as streaming motions on scales of a few hundred parsecs associated with a large scale bar. We fitted the nuclear ALMA 1.3mm emission with an unresolved component and an extended component. The 850$\mu$m emission shows at least two extended components, one along the major axis of the nuclear disk and the other along the axis of the ionization cone. The molecular gas in the central region (1" ~73pc) shows several CO clumps with complex kinematics which appears to be dominated by non-circular motions. While we cannot demonstrate conclusively the presence of a warped nuclear disk, we also detected non-circular motions along the kinematic minor axis. They reach line-of-sight velocities of v-vsys =150-200km/s. Assuming that the radial motions are in the plane of the galaxy, then we interpret them as a nuclear molecular outflow due to molecular gas in the host galaxy being entrained by the AGN wind. We derive molecular outflow rates of $5\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and $0.6\,M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ at projected distances of up to 30pc to the northeast and southwest of the AGN, respectively. At the AGN location we estimate a mass in molecular gas of $5\times 10^{5}\,M_\odot$ and an average column density $N({\rm H}_2) = 2-3\times 10^{23}\,{\rm cm}^{-2}$ in the inner 15pc. The nuclear molecular gas and sub-mm continuum emission of NGC3227 do not resemble the classical compact torus. Rather, these emissions extend for several tens of parsecs and appear connected with the circumnuclear ring in the host galaxy disk, as found in other local AGN. X-ray and mid-infrared emission are signposts of the accretion of matter onto the supermassive black holes that reside at the centres of most galaxies. As a major step towards understanding accreting supermassive black holes and their role in the evolution of galaxies, we will use the 4MOST multi-object spectrograph to provide a highly complete census of active galactic nuclei over a large fraction of the extragalactic sky observed in X-rays by eROSITA that is visible to 4MOST. We will systematically follow up all eROSITA point-like extragalactic X-ray sources (mostly active galactic nuclei), and complement them with a heavily obscured active galactic nuclei selection approach using mid-infrared data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The X-ray and mid-infrared flux limits of eROSITA and WISE are well matched to the spectroscopic capabilities of a 4-metre-class telescope, allowing us to reach completeness levels of ~80-90% for all X-ray selected active galactic nuclei with fluxes $f_{0.5-2\ {\rm keV}} > 10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$; this is about a factor of 30 deeper than the ROSAT all-sky survey. We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs ($R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda \sim 6500$), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph ($R \sim 20\,000$). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger.
