Abstract Background Pollen‐food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is caused by the cross‐reaction of the specific IgE to pollen allergens with similar allergens contained in fruits, vegetable, and nuts. The representative allergen responsible for this cross‐reaction is pathogenesis‐related protein (PR)‐10. Specific IgE test using Gly m 4, soybean PR‐10, is widely used to diagnose soy allergy. We aimed to investigate whether the Gly m 4‐specific IgE test is useful for predicting oral allergy symptoms (OAS) to Rosaceae fruits in PFAS caused by Betulaceae pollen sensitization. Methods Forty‐one patients with suspected PFAS were enrolled. Specific IgE levels were measured against alder pollen, apple, peach, pear, and Gly m 4, and correlation between test results and allergic symptoms was assessed to compare the accuracy of these allergen‐specific IgE tests. Results Of the 41 patients, 32 were positive for alder pollen‐specific IgE. Of those, 16 showed OAS to at least one of apple, peach, and pear (OAS (+) group), and the rest 16 cases showed no symptoms (OAS (−) group). The Gly m 4‐specific IgE value was significantly higher in the OAS (+) group (p = .014), and the highest in area under the receiver operating characteristics curve. The cut‐off value for detection of the OAS (+) group was 2.65 UA/ml, with a sensitivity of 62.5% and a specificity of 81.3%. Other allergen‐specific IgE values were not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions In the subjects sensitized to Betulaceae pollen allergens, the Gly m 4‐specific IgE test is useful for predicting OAS of Rosaceae fruits.

Introduction. Rose hips are rich in macro- and micronutrients. Unfortunately, heat treatment destroys most nutrients. Ultrasonic technologies make it possible to reduce the drying time and lower the temperature regime. The research objective was to adjust ultrasound technology to rose hip production in order to reduce the loss of vitamins and improve the quality indicators of the dried product. Study objects and methods. The research featured rose hips of the Rosa canina species collected in the south of Kazakhstan. This subspecies of wild rose is poor in vitamin C. Nevertheless, this shrub is extremely common in Russia and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The raw material was dried according to standard methods. One group of samples was treated with ultrasound, while the other served as control. Both groups underwent a sensory evaluation and were tested for moisture and vitamin C. Results and discussion. The rose hips were dried in a combination steam oven with a built-in ultrasonic wave generator. The research revealed the following optimal parameters of the ultrasound drying process: frequency of ultrasonic vibrations – 22 kHz, processing time – 2.5 h, temperature in the combination steam oven – +56°C, initial moisture content – 30%. The resulting product met the requirements of State Standard. The loss of moisture was 57%. According to State Standard 1994-93, the initial moisture content should be 15% or less. Time decreased from 360 min to 160 min, and the initial moisture was 13%. The experiment confirmed the initial hypothesis that ultrasonic treatment improves the drying process by improving quality indicators and preserving vitamin C in raw materials using. Conclusion. Ultrasound treatment during moisture removal from rose hips provides a resource-saving technology that fulfills an economically and socially important function.

Disease detection in plants is essential for food security and economic stability. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery and artificial intelligence (AI) are valuable tools for it. The purpose of this review is to gather several methods used by our peers recently, hoping to provide some knowledge and assistance for researchers and farmers so that they can employ these technologies more advantageously. The studies reviewed in this paper focused on Scab detection in Rosaceae family fruits. Feature extraction, segmentation, and classification methods for processing the UAV-obtained images and detecting the diseases are discussed briefly. The advantages and limitations of diverse kinds of UAVs and imaging sensors are also explained. The widely applied methods for image analysis are machine learning (ML)-based models, and the extensively used UAV platforms are rotary-wing UAVs. Recent technologies that cope with challenges related to disease detection using UAV imagery are also detailed in this paper. Some challenging issues such as higher costs, limited batteries and flying time, huge and complex data, low resolution, and noisy images, etc., still require future consideration. The prime significance of this paper is to promote automation and user-friendly technologies in Scab detection.

Rosaceae, a large plant family of more than 3,000 species, consists of many economically important fruit and ornamental crops, including peach, apple, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, and rose. These horticultural crops are not only important economic drivers in many regions of the world, but also major sources of human nutrition. Additionally, due to the diversity of fruit types in Rosaceae, this plant family offers excellent opportunities for investigations into fleshy fruit diversity, evolution, and development. With the development of high-throughput sequencing technologies and computational tools, an increasing number of high-quality genomes and transcriptomes of Rosaceae species have become available and will greatly facilitate Rosaceae research and breeding. This review summarizes major genomic resources and genome research progress in Rosaceae, highlights important databases, and suggests areas for further improvement. The availability of these big data resources will greatly accelerate research progress and enhance the agricultural productivity of Rosaceae.

Background: Lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) are major allergens of Rosaceae fruits in the Mediterranean area. IgE-cross-reactivity has been demonstrated in vitro among LTPs from peach, apple, chestnut and Artemisia pollen. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reactivity to LTPs from peach, apple, chestnut and Artemisia pollen by means of skin prick tests (SPTs). Methods: Forty-seven patients allergic to peach (peach group), 20 patients sensitized to Artemisia pollen with no food allergies (Artemisia group), and 12 control subjects were skin tested with fresh peach, as well as with whole extracts and purified LTPs of peach, apple, chestnut and Artemisia pollen. Results: The rates of positive SPTs for peach, apple, chestnut and Artemisia LTPs were, respectively, 91, 77, 23, and 36% in the peach group, and 30, 5, 15 and 40% in the Artemisia group. No response was observed in the control subjects. SPTs with peach LTP strongly correlated with SPTs conducted with fresh peach. In the peach group, the most frequent pattern of reactivity to LTPs was the combination peach-apple (45%), followed by peach-apple-Artemisia-chestnut (21%). Significant correlations were found between peach and apple LTPs, and between Artemisia and chestnut LTPs. Positive SPTs to chestnut LTP were only observed in patients with positive SPTs to Artemisia LTP. All the patients with positive case histories to chestnut reacted to chestnut LTP. Conclusions: LTPs are plant panallergens with different patterns of cross-reactivity. They are major allergens of Rosaceae fruits and seem to be involved in allergic reactions to unrelated foodstuffs such as chestnut, probably through sensitization to the cross-reactive Artemisia LTP. Background Lipid-transfer proteins (LTPs), but not Bet v 1 homologues, have been identified as major allergens of apple and peach in the Rosaceae fruit-allergic population in the Mediterranean area. Many of these patients show cosensitization to mugwort pollen. LTPs have an ubiquitous distribution in tissues of many plant species, and have been proposed as a novel type of plant panallergens. Objective We sought to isolate LTPs from Artemisia pollen and from a plant food not belonging to the Rosaceae family, such as chestnut nut, and to compare their amino acid sequences and IgE-binding capacities with those of apple and peach LTPs. Methods Allergens (LTPs) were isolated by different chromatographic methods (gel-filtration, ion exchange and/or reverse-phase HPLC), and characterized by N-terminal amino acid sequencing and MALDI analysis. Specific IgE-quantification and immunodetection, as well as immunoblot and ELISA inhibition assays, were carried out using sera from patients allergic to both apple and peach. Results Purified LTPs from Artemisia pollen and from chestnut seed showed molecular masses about 9 700d, and 43–50% sequence identity with the equivalent allergens of apple and peach in the first 30 N-terminal residues, which comprise about one third of the total amino acid sequence. A similar degree of sequence identity (50%) was found between the Artemisia and chestnut proteins. Both isolated LTPs bound specific IgE of sera from Rosaceae fruits allergic patients. However, substantially lower values of specific IgE-binding and maximum ELISA inhibition percentages were obtained for Artemisia and chestnut LTPs when compared to those from apple and peach. Conclusion LTPs from Artemisia pollen and chestnut crossreact with allergens (LTPs) of Rosaceae fruits, but significant differences in specific IgE-binding capacities were observed among members of the plant LTP family. Background It is not uncommon that patients allergic to fruits such as apple, pear, and peach, refer adverse reactions after the ingestion of the whole fruit, but subsequently tolerate the pulp. Objective This study aimed to compare the allergenicity of peels and pulps of apple, peach, and pear in 33 patients allergic to these fruits. Methods Clinical reactivity to the ingestion of whole fruit (peel + pulp) and pulp was established by medical history. Peels and pulps were tested separately in skin prick tests (SPTs), histamine release tests (HRTs) and RASTs. Cross-allergenicity between peel and pulp of apple and peach was studied by RAST inhibition. Results Adverse reactions appeared more frequently and were more severe when the whole fruit was eaten. More than 40% of patients allergic to apple and pear tolerated the ingestion of the pulp of these fruits, and reactions were only elicited by the intake of the whole fruit. Peels induced higher SPTs, HRTs and RASTs than pulps. An important cross-allergenicity was found between the peel and pulp of apple and peach, although the amount of the shared allergenic epitopes seemed to be higher in peels. Conclusion Our results suggest that peels of Rosaceae fruits such as apple, peach, and pear, have a higher allergenicity than pulps, which is clinically relevant.
