Search

The question of the origin of the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray emission in Centaurus A (Cen A) persists despite decades of observations. Results from X-ray instruments suggest a jet origin since the implied electron temperature (kT_e) would cause pair production runaway in the corona. In contrast, instruments sensitive to soft gamma-rays report electron temperatures indicating a corona origin may be possible. In this context, we analyzed archival INTEGRAL/IBIS-ISGRI and SPI data and observations from a 2022 Cen A monitoring program. Our analysis did not find any spectral variability. Thus we combined all observations for long-term average spectra, which were fit with a NuSTAR observation to study the 3.5 keV - 2.2 MeV spectrum. Spectral fits using a CompTT model found kT_e ~ 550 keV, near pair-production runaway. The spectrum was also well described by a log-parabola to model synchrotron self-Compton emission from the jet. Additionally, a spectral fit with the 12-year catalog Fermi/LAT spectrum using a log-parabola can explain the data up to ~ 3 GeV. Above ~ 3 GeV, a power-law excess is present, which has been previously reported in LAT/H.E.S.S. analysis. However, including a corona spectral component can also describe the data well. In this scenario, the hard X-rays/soft gamma-rays are due the corona and the MeV to GeV emission is due to the jet., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures. Accepted by ApJ

On 2 September 2017 MAXI J1535-571 went into outburst and peaked at ~5 Crab in the 2-20 keV energy range. Early in the flare INTEGRAL performed Target of Opportunity pointings and monitored the source as it transitioned from the hard state to the soft state. Using quasi-simultaneous observations from MAXI/GSC and INTEGRAL/SPI, we studied the temporal and spectral evolution of MAXI J1535-571 in the 2-500 keV range. Early spectra show a Comptonized spectrum and a high-energy component dominant above ~150 keV. CompTT fits to the SPI data found electron temperatures (kTe) evolves from ~31 keV to 18 keV with a tied optical depth (tau ~ 0.85) or tau evolving from ~1.2-0.65 with a tied kTe (~24 keV). To investigate the nature of the high-energy component, we performed a spectral decomposition of the 100-400 keV energy band. The CompTT flux varies significantly during the hard state while the high-energy component flux is consistent with a constant flux. This result suggests that the two components originate from different locations, which favors a jet origin interpretation for the high-energy component over a hybrid corona interpretation. Lastly, two short rebrightenings during the hard-to-soft transition are compared to similar events reported in MAXI J1820+070.

In this paper we first review the results obtained by the INTEGRAL mission in the domain of Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), thanks to the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System, which is able to deliver near real-time alerts for GRBs detected within the IBIS field of view. More than 120 GRBs have been detected to date and we summarize their properties here. INTEGRAL is an ESA mission in fundamental astrophysics that was launched in October 2002. It has been in orbit for over 18 years, during which it has been observing the high-energy sky with a set of instruments specifically designed to probe the emission from hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray sources. This paper is devoted to the subject of black hole binaries, which are among the most important sources that populate the high-energy sky. We present a review of the scientific literature based on INTEGRAL data, which has significantly advanced our knowledge in the field of relativistic astrophysics. We briefly summarise the state-of-the-art of the study of black hole binaries, with a particular focus on the topics closer to the INTEGRAL science. We then give an overview of the results obtained by INTEGRAL and by other observatories on a number of sources of importance in the field. Finally, we review the main results obtained over the past 18 years on all the black hole binaries that INTEGRAL has observed. At the time of defining the science objectives of the INTernational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), such a rapid and spectacular development of multi-messenger astronomy could not have been predicted, with new impulsive phenomena becoming accessible through different channels. Neutrino telescopes have routinely detected energetic neutrino events coming from unknown cosmic sources since 2013. Gravitational wave detectors opened a novel window on the sky in 2015 with the detection of the merging of two black holes and in 2017 with the merging of two neutron stars, followed by signals in the full electromagnetic range. Finally, since 2007, radio telescopes detected extremely intense and short burst of radio waves, known as Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) whose origin is for most cases extragalactic, but enigmatic. The exceptionally robust and versatile design of the INTEGRAL mission has allowed researchers to exploit data collected not only with the pointed instruments, but also with the active cosmic-ray shields of the main instruments to detect impulses of gamma-rays in coincidence with unpredictable phenomena. The full-sky coverage, mostly unocculted by the Earth, the large effective area, the stable background, and the high duty cycle (85%) put INTEGRAL in a privileged position to give a major contribution to multi-messenger astronomy. In this review, we describe how INTEGRAL has provided upper limits on the gamma-ray emission from black-hole binary mergers, detected a short gamma-ray burst in coincidence with a binary neutron star merger, contributed to define the spectral energy distribution of a blazar associated with a neutrino event, set upper limits on impulsive and steady gamma-ray emission from cosmological FRBs, and detected a magnetar flare associated with fast radio bursting emission., Comment: Accepted for publication on New Astronomy Reviews as invited contribution

The Crab Nebula is used by many instruments as a calibration source, in particular at high energy, where it is one of the brightest celestial object. The spectrometer INTEGRAL SPI (20 keV - 8 MeV), in operation since October 2002, offers a large dataset dedicated to this source, with regular campaigns planned twice per year. We have analyzed the available data to quantify the source behavior on a long term scale and examine the stability level on timescales from hour to years. As a result, the source flux variability appears to be contained within less than +/- 5% around a ~ 20 yr mean value, for broad bands covering the 20 keV - 400 keV energy domain, above which statistic limits any firm conclusion. In term of spectral shape, the Band model provides a good description of the observed emission between 20 keV and 2.2 MeV. The averaged spectrum best fit parameters correspond to a low energy slope of 1.99 +/- 0.01, a high energy slope of -2.32 +/- 0.02 and a characteristic energy E c of 531 +/- 50 keV to describe the curvature joining both power laws. The spectral parameters have then been determined on the revolution timescale (~ 1 to 2 days) and their steadiness confirms the source emission stability. As a complementary result, this study demonstrates that the SPI instrument efficiency remains within 5% of its initial value, after 17 years of operation., Comment: 8 figures. The black hole transient GRS 1716-249 was monitored from the radio to the gamma-ray band during its 2016-2017 outburst. This paper focuses on the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) obtained in 2017 February-March, when GRS 1716-249 was in a bright hard spectral state. The soft gamma-ray data collected with the INTEGRAL/SPI telescope show the presence of a spectral component which is in excess of the thermal Comptonisation emission. This component is usually interpreted as inverse Compton emission from a tiny fraction of non-thermal electrons in the X-ray corona. We find that hybrid thermal/non-thermal Comptonisation models provide a good fit to the X/gamma-ray spectrum of GRS 1716-249. The best-fit parameters are typical of the bright hard state spectra observed in other black hole X-ray binaries. Moreover, the magnetised hybrid Comptonisation model BELM provides an upper limit on the intensity of the coronal magnetic field of about 1E+06 G. Alternatively, this soft gamma-ray emission could originate from synchrotron emission in the radio jet. In order to test this hypothesis, we fit the SED with the irradiated disc plus Comptonisation model combined with the jet internal shock emission model ISHEM. We found that a jet with an electron distribution of p~2.1 can reproduce the soft gamma-ray emission of GRS 1716-249. However, if we introduce the expected cooling break around 10 keV, the jet model can no longer explain the observed soft gamma-ray emission, unless the index of the electron energy distribution is significantly harder (p<2)., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. We have analyzed 16 years of observations dedicated to the Crab (pulsar + nebula) with the INTEGRAL SPI instrument to investigate its polarization properties. We find that the source presents a substantially polarized emission (PF = 24%) in the hard X-ray domain, with the electric vector aligned with the pulsar spin axis, in agreement with other results at various wavelengths. The stability of the polarization characteristics with energy and over the 16 years covered by the data is remarkable, completing the standard candle status of the source in the spectral domain. The polarization measurements imply that the synchrotron emission is the dominant mechanism of photon production from radio to hard X-rays. The high level of polarized emission points out the steadiness of the source, in particular of the magnetic field configuration and geometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Thanks to its high orbit and a set of complementary detectors providing continuous coverage of the whole sky, the INTEGRAL satellite has unique capabilities for the identification and study of the electromagnetic radiation associated to gravitational waves signals and, more generally, for multi-messenger astrophysics. We report the e INTernational Gamma-ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) detection of the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A (discovered by Fermi-GBM) with a signal-to-noise ratio of 4.6, and, for the first time, its association with the gravitational waves (GWs) from binary neutron star (BNS) merging event GW170817 detected by the LIGO and Virgo observatories. The significance of association between the gamma-ray burst observed by INTEGRAL and GW170817 is 3.2 $\sigma$, while the association between the Fermi-GBM and INTEGRAL detections is 4.2 $\sigma$. GRB 170817A was detected by the SPI-ACS instrument about 2 s after the end of the gravitational wave event. We measure a fluence of $(1.4 \pm 0.4 \pm 0.6) \times$10$^{-7}$ erg cm$^{-2})$ (75--2000 keV), where, respectively, the statistical error is given at the 1 $\sigma$ confidence level, and the systematic error corresponds to the uncertainty in the spectral model and instrument response. We also report on the pointed follow-up observations carried out by INTEGRAL, starting 19.5 h after the event, and lasting for 5.4 days. We provide a stringent upper limit on any electromagnetic signal in a very broad energy range, from 3 keV to 8 MeV, constraining the soft gamma-ray afterglow flux to $<7.1\times$10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (80--300 keV). Exploiting the unique capabilities of INTEGRAL, we constrained the gamma-ray line emission from radioactive decays that are expected to be the principal source of the energy behind a kilonova event following a BNS coalescence. The outburst of V404 Cyg during the summer of 2015 reached unparalleled intensities at X-ray and soft gamma-ray energies with fluxes \( > 50\) Crab in the \(20-50\) keV energy band. To date, studies in the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray energy domain have focused primarily on the energy spectra. In this work, timing analysis has been performed with \textit{INTEGRAL}/SPI data in the \(20-300\) keV energy range for \textit{INTEGRAL} revolution 1557, which corresponds to the brightest flare of V404 Cyg (on June, 26). The power spectra are fit with broken power-law and multi-Lorentzian models and compared with previously reported results of V404 Cyg flaring activity from 1989 and 2015. Also, we took advantage of the good signal-to-noise ratio obtained above 70 keV to quantify the timing/fast-variability properties of the source as a function of energy. We then point out similarities of V404 Cyg with the black hole transient V4641 Sgr. Like V4641 Sgr, we found the power spectra of V404 Cyg during high flux periods did not possess the expected flat-top feature typically seen in a hard spectral state. We used data from the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) to set upper-limits on the ${\gamma}$-ray and hard X-ray prompt emission associated with the gravitational wave event GW170104, discovered by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration. The unique omni-directional viewing capability of the instruments on-board INTEGRAL allowed us to examine the full 90% confidence level localization region of the LIGO trigger. Depending on the particular spectral model assumed and the specific position within this region, the upper limits inferred from the INTEGRAL observations range from F${\gamma}$=1.9x10-7 erg cm-2 to F${\gamma}$=10-6 erg cm-2 (75 keV - 2 MeV energy range). This translates into a ratio between the prompt energy released in ${\gamma}$-rays along the direction to the observer and the gravitational wave energy of E${\gamma}$/EGW <2.6x10-5 . Using the INTEGRAL results, we can not confirm the ${\gamma}$-ray proposed counterpart to GW170104 by the AGILE team with the MCAL instrument. The reported flux of the AGILE/MCAL event, E2, is not compatible with the INTEGRAL upper limits within most of the 90% LIGO localization region. There is only a relatively limited portion of the sky where the sensitivity of the INTEGRAL instruments was not optimal and the lowest allowed fluence estimated for E2 would still be compatible with the INTEGRAL results. This region was also observed independently by Fermi/GBM and AstroSAT, from which, as far as we are aware, there are no reports of any significant detection of a prompt high-energy event., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL

During the first observing run of LIGO, two gravitational wave events and one lower-significance trigger (LVT151012) were reported by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration. At the time of LVT151012, the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) was pointing at a region of the sky coincident with the high localization probability area of the event and thus permitted us to search for its electromagnetic counterpart (both prompt and afterglow emission). The imaging instruments on-board INTEGRAL (IBIS/ISGRI, IBIS/PICsIT, SPI, and the two JEM-X modules) have been exploited to attempt the detection of any electromagnetic emission associated with LVT151012 over 3 decades in energy (from 3 keV to 8 MeV). The omni-directional instruments on-board the satellite, i.e. the SPI-ACS and IBIS monitored the entire LVT151012 localization region at energies above 75 keV. We did not find any significant transient source that was spatially and/or temporally coincident with LVT151012, obtaining tight upper limits on the associated hard X-ray and $\gamma$-ray radiation. For typical spectral models, the upper limits on the fluence of the emission from any 1 s long-lasting counterpart of LVT151012 ranges from $F_{\gamma}=$3.5$\times$10$^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (20 - 200 keV) to $F_{\gamma}$=7.1$\times$10$^{-7}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (75 - 2000 keV), constraining the ratio of the isotropic equivalent energy released in the electromagnetic emission to the total energy of the gravitational waves: $E_{75-2000~keV}/E_{GW}<$4.4$\times$10$^{-5}$. Finally, we provide an exhaustive summary of the capabilities of all instruments on-board INTEGRAL to hunt for $\gamma$-ray counterparts of gravitational wave events, exploiting both serendipitous and pointed follow-up observations. A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. Using observations of the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), we put upper limits on the gamma-ray and hard X-ray prompt emission associated with the gravitational wave event GW150914, discovered by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration. The omni-directional view of the INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS has allowed us to constrain the fraction of energy emitted in the hard X-ray electromagnetic component for the full high-probability sky region of LIGO trigger. Our upper limits on the hard X-ray fluence at the time of the event range from $F_{\gamma}=2 \times 10^{-8}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ to $F_{\gamma}=10^{-6}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ in the 75 keV - 2 MeV energy range for typical spectral models. Our results constrain the ratio of the energy promptly released in gamma-rays in the direction of the observer to the gravitational wave energy E$_\gamma/$E$_\mathrm{GW}<10^{-6}$. We discuss the implication of gamma-ray limits on the characteristics of the gravitational wave source, based on the available predictions for prompt electromagnetic emission., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJL

A strong outburst of the X-ray transient V404 Cygni (= GS2023-338) was observed in 2015 June/July up to a level of 50 Crab in the hard X-ray domain. At this level of photon flux, an instrument's behavior may be severely tested and some instrumental artifacts could affect the data analysis. We are interested in the SPI instrument aboard the INTEGRAL mission and have performed thorough checks to ensure a correct handling of the data. By analyzing the observations throughout the outburst, we have observed that the high energy domain (above 500 keV) sometimes exhibits unexpected features which are worth careful examination. Spurious triggers are known to affect the MeV region and we suspected that this phenomenon could be accentuated by the huge photon flux. We have investigated this issue, specifically during high flux periods and actually found that artificial high energy bumps may appear with the current standard analysis procedure. However, if the specific selection events usually used in the 650-2200 keV energy is applied down to 450 keV, the spurious noise and the associated spectral features are removed. We present how to obtain reliable spectral results on the high energy emission of V404 Cyg at extreme flux levels and demonstrate that with the correct configuration, the hard X-ray emission, up to a few MeV, is modeled by a two component model as observed in Cyg X-1 and for V404 Cygni itself at lower flux levels., Comment: 3 pages + 4 figures; keywords : radiation mechanisms:general - Gamma-rays:individual (V404 Cygni = GS2023+338) - gamma rays:observations - methods:data analysis

We present recent improvements in polarization analysis with the INTEGRAL SPI data. The SPI detector plane consists of 19 independent Ge crystals and can operate as a polarimeter. The anisotropy characteristics of Compton diffusions can provide information on the polarization parameters of the incident flux. By including the physics of the polarized Compton process in the instrument simulation, we are able to determine the instrument response for a linearly polarized emission at any position angle. We compare the observed data with the simulation sets by a minimum \chi^2 technique to determine the polarization parameters of the source (angle and fraction). We have tested our analysis procedure with Crab nebula observations and find a position angle similar to those previously reported in the literature, with a comfortable significance. Since the instrument response depends on the incident angle, each exposure in the SPI data requires its own set of simulations, calculated for 18 polarization angles (from 0{\deg} to 170{\deg} in steps of 10{\deg}) and unpolarized emission. The analysis of a large amount of observations for a given source, required to obtain statistically significant results, represents a large amount of computing time, but it is the only way to access this complementary information in the hard X-ray regime. Operational since 2002 on-board the INTEGRAL observatory, the SPI spectrometer can be used to perform polarization measurements in the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray domain (~ 130 keV - 8 MeV). However, this phenomenon is complex to measure at high energy and requires high fluxes. Cyg X-1 appears as the best candidate amongst the X-ray binaries since it is one of the brightest persistent sources in this energy domain. Furthermore, a polarized component has recently been reported above 400 keV from IBIS data. We have therefore dedicated our efforts to develop the required tools to study the polarization in the INTEGRAL SPI data and have first applied them to 2.6 Ms of Cyg X-1 observations, covering 6.5 years of the INTEGRAL mission. We have found that the high energy emission of Cyg X-1 is indeed polarized, with a mean polarization fraction of 76 % +/- 15 % at a position angle estimated to 42 +/- 3 degrees, for energies above 230 keV. The polarization fraction clearly increases with energy. In the 130-230 keV band, the polarization fraction is lower than 20 %, but exceeds 75 % between 370 and 850 keV, with the (total) emission vanishing above this energy. This result strongly suggests that the emission originates from the jet structure known to emit in the radio domain. The same synchrotron process could be responsible for the emission from radio to MeV, implying the presence of high energy electrons. For the very first time, we report the high frequency analysis of Cyg X-1 up to hard X-ray using SPI on-board INTEGRAL. After analyzing the possible contribution fromthe background, and using INTEGRAL archive from March 2005 to May 2008, Power Density Spectra (PDS) were obtained until 130 keV. First, we show that their overall shape is very similar to that observed at lower energies, as they are well described by sets of Lorentzians. The strength of this fast variability (up to 40 Hz) does not drop at high energy since we show that it remains at ~25% rms, even in the highest energy bands. Second, the hard X-ray variability patterns of Cyg X-1 are state dependent: the softer the spectrum (or the lower the hardness ratio), the lower the total fractional variability and the higher the typical frequencies observed. The strength of total variability as a function of energy and state is then investigated. By comparison with simultaneous and published RXTE/PCA data, we showed that in the hard state, it remains quite constant in the 2-130 keV energy range. In our softer state, it is also flat until 50 keV and may increase at higher energy. Following the detection of a bright new X-ray source, MAXI J1659-152, a series of observations was triggered with almost all currently flying high-energy missions. We report here on XMM-Newton, INTEGRAL and RXTE observations during the early phase of the X-ray outburst of this transient black-hole candidate. We confirm the dipping nature in the X-ray light curves. We find that the dips recur on a period of 2.4139+/-0.0005 hrs, and interpret this as the orbital period of the system. It is thus the shortest period black-hole X-ray binary known to date. Using the various observables, we derive the properties of the source. The inclination of the accretion disk with respect to the line of sight is estimated to be 60-75 degrees. The companion star to the black hole is possibly a M5 dwarf star, with a mass and radius of about 0.15 M_sun and 0.23 R_sun, respectively. The system is rather compact (orbital separation is about 1.35 R_sun) and is located at a distance of roughly 7 kpc. We have investigated the pulse shape evolution of the Crab pulsar emission in the hard X-ray domain of the electromagnetic spectrum. In particular, we have studied the alignment of the Crab pulsar phase profiles measured in the hard X-rays and in other wavebands. To obtain the hard X-ray pulse profiles, we have used six year (2003-2009, with a total exposure of about 4 Ms) of publicly available data of the SPI telescope on-board of the INTEGRAL observatory, folded with the pulsar time solution derived from the Jodrell Bank Crab Pulsar Monthly Ephemeris. We found that the main pulse in the hard X-ray 20-100 keV energy band is leading the radio one by $8.18\pm0.46$ milliperiods in phase, or $275\pm15 \mu s$ in time. Quoted errors represent only statistical uncertainties.Our systematic error is estimated to be $\sim 40 \mu s$ and is mainly caused by the radio measurement uncertainties. In hard X-rays, the average distance between the main pulse and interpulse on the phase plane is $0.3989\pm0.0009$. To compare our findings in hard X-rays with the soft 2-20 keV X-ray band, we have used data of quasi-simultaneous Crab observations with the PCA monitor on-board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) mission. The time lag and the pulses separation values measured in the 3-20 keV band are $0.00933\pm0.00016$ (corresponding to $310\pm6 \mu s$) and $0.40016\pm0.00028$ parts of the cycle, respectively. While the pulse separation values measured in soft X-rays and hard X-rays agree, the time lags are statistically different. Additional analysis show that the delay between the radio and X-ray signals varies with energy in the 2 - 300 keV energy range. We explain such a behaviour as due to the superposition of two independent components responsible for the Crab pulsed emission in this energy band.

The SPI spectrometer aboard the INTEGRAL mission observes regularly the Crab Nebula since 2003. We report on observations distributed over 5.5 years and investigate the variability of the intensity and spectral shape of this remarkable source in the hard X-rays domain up to a few MeV. While single power law models give a good description in the X-ray domain (mean photon index ~ 2.05) and MeV domain (photon index ~ 2.23), crucial information are contained in the evolution of the slope with energy between these two values. This study has been carried out trough individual observations and long duration (~ 400 ks) averaged spectra. The stability of the emission is remarkable and excludes a single power law model. The slopes measured below and above 100 keV agree perfectly with the last values reported in the X-ray and MeV regions respectively, but without indication of a localized break point. This suggests a gradual softening in the emission around 100 keV and thus a continuous evolution rather than an actual change in the mechanism parameters. In the MeV region, no significant deviation from the proposed power law model is visible up to 5-6 MeV. Finally, we take advantage of the spectroscopic capability of the instrument to seek for previously reported spectral features in the covered energy range with negative results for any significant cyclotron or annihilation emission on 400 ks timescales. The microquasar 1E 1740.7-2942 is observed with Integral since Spring 2003. Here, we report on the source high energy behaviour by using the first three years of data collected with SPI and IBIS telescopes, taking advantage of the instruments complementarity. Light curves analysis showed two main states for 1E 1740.7-2942: the canonical low/hard state of black-hole candidates and a ``dim'' state, characterised by a ~ 20 times fainter emission, detected only below 50 keV and when summing more than 1Ms of data. For the first time the continuum of the low/hard state has been measured up to ~ 600 keV with a spectrum that is well represented by a thermal Comptonization plus an additional component necessary to fit the data above 200 keV. This high energy component could be related to non-thermal processes as already observed in other black-hole candidates. Alternatively, we show that a model composed by two thermal Comptonizations provides an equally representative description of the data: the temperature of the first population of electrons results as (kTe)_1 ~ 30 keV while the second, (kTe)_2, is fixed at 100 keV. We present observations of the Crab Nebula above 20 keV by the SPI/INTEGRAL telescope during more than 5 years of operations. Our study demonstrates the stability of the instrument with time and allows a detailed analysis of the emission observed from the Crab Nebula between 20 keV and 1 MeV. The flux stability is discussed and serves a robust spectral shape analysis. We find that a single power law is clearly excluded since the photon spectrum presents a curvature in the considered energy domain. We have modelled it by a broken power law with the energy break fixed to 100 keV and determined the two photon indices together with the 100 keV flux for 9 periods between 2004 and 2008. We have processed the data accumulated with INTEGRAL SPI during 4 years (~ 51 Ms) to study the Galactic ``diffuse'' emission morphology in the 20 keV to 8 MeV energy range. To achieve this objective, we have derived simultaneously an all-sky census of emitting sources and images of the Galactic Ridge (GR) emission. In the central radian, the resolved point source emission amounts to 88%, 91% and 68% of the total emission in the 25-50, 50-100 and 100-300 keV domains respectively. We have compared the GR emission spatial distribution to those obtained from CO and NIR maps, and quantified our results through latitude and longitude profiles. Below 50 keV, the SPI data are better traced by the latter, supporting a stellar origin for this emission. Furthermore, we found that the GR emission spectrum follows a power law with a photon index ~ 1.55 above 50 keV while an additional component is required below this energy. This component shows a cutoff around 30 keV, reinforcing a stellar origin, as proposed by Krivonos et al. (2007). The annihilation diffuse emission component is extracted simultaneously, leading to the determination of the related parameters (positronium flux and fraction). A specific discussion is devoted to the annihilation line distribution since a significant emission is detected over a region as large as ~80 degrees by ~10 degrees potentially associated with the disk or halo surrounding the central regions of our Galaxy., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures. Simbol-X is a French-Italian mission, with a participation of German laboratories, for X-ray astronomy in the wide 0.5-80 keV band. Taking advantage of emerging technology in mirror manufacturing and spacecraft formation flying, Simbol-X will push grazing incidence imaging up to ~80 keV, providing an improvement of roughly three orders of magnitude in sensitivity and angular resolution compared to all instruments that have operated so far above 10 keV. This will open a new window in X-ray astronomy, allowing breakthrough studies on black hole physics and census and particle acceleration mechanisms. Gamma-ray line emission from radioactive decay of 60Fe provides constraints on nucleosynthesis in massive stars and supernovae. The spectrometer SPI on board INTEGRAL has accumulated nearly three years of data on gamma-ray emission from the Galactic plane. We have analyzed these data with suitable instrumental-background models and sky distributions to produce high-resolution spectra of Galactic emission. We detect the gamma-ray lines from 60Fe decay at 1173 and 1333 keV, obtaining an improvement over our earlier measurement of both lines with now 4.9 sigma significance for the combination of the two lines. The average flux per line is (4.4 \pm 0.9) \times 10^{-5} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} rad^{-1} for the inner Galaxy region. Deriving the Galactic 26Al gamma-ray line flux with using the same set of observations and analysis method, we determine the flux ratio of 60Fe/26Al gamma-rays as 0.148 \pm 0.06. The imaging spectrometer SPI on board ESA's INTEGRAL observatory provides us with an unprecedented view of positron annihilation in our Galaxy. The first sky maps in the 511 keV annihilation line and in the positronium continuum from SPI showed a puzzling concentration of annihilation radiation in the Galactic bulge region. By now, more than twice as many INTEGRAL observations are available, offering new clues to the origin of Galactic positrons. We present the current status of our analyses of this augmented data set. We now detect significant emission from outside the Galactic bulge region. The 511 keV line is clearly detected from the Galactic disk; in addition, there is a tantalizing hint at possible halo-like emission. The available data do not yet permit to discern whether the emission around the bulge region originates from a halo-like component or from a disk component that is very extended in latitude., Comment: to be published in the proceedings of the 6th INTEGRAL Workshop "The Obscured Universe" (3-7 July 2006, Moscow)

We present the analysis of the high energy emission of the Galactic black hole binary GX 339-4 in a low/hard state at the beginning of its 2004 outburst. The data from 273 ks of INTEGRAL observations, spread over 4 weeks, are analyzed, along with the existing simultaneous RXTE HEXTE and PCA data. During this period, the flux increases by a factor of about 3, while the spectral shape is quite unchanged, at least up to 150 keV. The high energy data allows us to detect the presence of a high energy cut-off, generally related to thermal mechanisms, and to estimate the plasma parameters in the framework of the Comptonization models. We found an electron temperature of 60-70 keV, an optical depth around 2.5, with a rather low reflection factor (0.2-0.4). In the last observation, we detected a high energy excess above 200 keV with respect to thermal Comptonization while at lower energy, the spectrum is practically identical to the previous one, taken just 2 days before. We study the spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) in energy range $\sim$5-100 keV. Early in 2006 the INTEGRAL observatory performed a series of four 30ksec observations with the Earth disk crossing the field of view of the instruments. The modulation of the aperture flux due to occultation of extragalactic objects by the Earth disk was used to obtain the spectrum of the Cosmic X-ray Background(CXB). Various sources of contamination were evaluated, including compact sources, Galactic Ridge emission, CXB reflection by the Earth atmosphere, cosmic ray induced emission by the Earth atmosphere and the Earth auroral emission. The spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background in the energy band 5-100 keV is obtained. The shape of the spectrum is consistent with that obtained previously by the HEAO-1 observatory, while the normalization is $\sim$10% higher. This difference in normalization can (at least partly) be traced to the different assumptions on the absolute flux from the Crab Nebulae. The increase relative to the earlier adopted value of the absolute flux of the CXB near the energy of maximum luminosity (20-50 keV) has direct implications for the energy release of supermassive black holes in the Universe and their growth at the epoch of the CXB origin., Comment: A&A, 14 pages, 12 figues

We present a measurement of the sky distribution of positronium (Ps) annihilation continuum emission obtained with the SPI spectrometer on board ESA's INTEGRAL observatory. The only sky region from which significant Ps continuum emission is detected is the Galactic bulge. The Ps continuum emission is circularly symmetric about the Galactic centre, with an extension of about 8 deg FWHM. Within measurement uncertainties, the sky distribution of the Ps continuum emission is consistent with that found by us for the 511 keV electron-positron annihilation line using SPI. Assuming that 511 keV line and Ps continuum emission follow the same spatial distribution, we derive a Ps fraction of 0.92 +/- 0.09. These results strengthen our conclusions regarding the origin of positrons in our Galaxy based on observations of the 511 keV line. In particular, they suggest that the main source of Galactic positrons is associated with an old stellar population, such as Type Ia supernovae, classical novae, or low-mass X-ray binaries. We performed a spectroscopic study of the 1809 keV gamma-ray line from 26Al decay in the Galaxy using the SPI imaging spectrometer with its high-resolution Ge detector camera on the INTEGRAL observatory. We analyzed observations of the first two mission years, fitting spectra from all 7130 telescope pointings in narrow energy bins to models of instrumental background and the 26Al sky. Instrumental background is estimated from independent tracers of cosmic-ray activation. The shape of the 26Al signal is compared to the instrumental response to extract the width of the celestial line. We detect the 26Al line at \~16sigma significance. The line is broadened only slightly, if at all; we constrain the width to be below 2.8 keV (FWHM, 2 sigma). The average Doppler velocities of 26Al at the time of its decay in the interstellar medium (decay time~1.04 My) therefore are probably around 100 km/s, in agreement with expectations from Galactic rotation and interstellar turbulence. The flux and spatial distribution of the emission are found consistent with previous observations. We report the results of an observation of Cygnus X-1 with INTEGRAL, that we combine with simultaneous radio observations with the Ryle telescope. Both spectral and variability properties of the source indicate that Cygnus X-1 was in an Intermediate State. The INTEGRAL spectrum shows a high-energy cut-off or break around 100 keV. The shape of this cut-off differs from pure thermal Comptonisation, suggesting the presence of a non-thermal component at higher energies.The average broad band spectrum is well represented by hybrid thermal/non-thermal Comptonisation models. During the 4 day long observation the source showed an important spectral and flux variability. A principal component analysis demonstrates that most of this variability occurs through 2 independent modes. The first mode consists in changes in the overall luminosity on time scale of hours with almost constant spectra that are strikingly uncorrelated with the variable radio flux. We interpret this variability mode as variations of the dissipation rate in the corona. The second variability mode consists in a pivoting of the spectrum around 10 keV. It acts on a longer time-scale: initially soft, the spectrum hardens in the first part of the observation and then softens again. This pivoting pattern is strongly correlated with the radio (15 GHz) emission: radio fluxes are stronger when the INTEGRAL spectrum is harder. We propose that the pivoting mode represents a 'mini' state transition from a nearly High Soft State to a nearly Low Hard State, and back. This mini-transition would be caused by changes in the soft cooling photons flux in the hot Comptonising plasma associated with an increase of the temperature of the accretion disc. The INTEGRAL observatory has been performing a deep survey of the Galactic central radian since 2003, with the goal of both extracting a catalog of sources and gaining insight into the Galactic diffuse emission. This paper concentrates on the estimation of the total point sources emission contribution. It is now clear that unresolved point sources contribute to the observed diffuse emission; the increasing sensitivity of instruments with time has lead to a steady decrease in estimates of this ``diffuse emission''. We have analysed the first year data obtained with the spectrometer and imager SPI on board INTEGRAL. First, a catalog of 63 hard X-ray sources detected, time-averaged, during our 2003 Galactic plane survey, is derived. Second, after extracting the spectra of the sources detected by SPI, their combined contribution is compared to the total (resolved and unresolved) emission from the Galactic ridge. The data analysis is complex: it requires us to split the total emission into several components, as discrete sources and diffuse emission are superimposed in SPI data. The main result is that point source emission dominates in the hard X-ray/soft $\gamma$-ray domain, and contributes around 90 % of the total emission around 100 keV, while above 250 keV, diffuse electron-positron annihilation, through its three-photon positronium continuum with a positronium fraction $\sim$ 0.97 and the 511 keV electron-positron line, dominates over the sources., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

The INTEGRAL satellite extensively observed the black hole binary Cygnus X-1 from 2002 November to 2004 November during calibration, open time and core program (Galactic Plane Scan) observations. These data provide evidence for significant spectral variations over the period. In the framework of the accreting black hole phenomenology, the source was most of the time in the Hard State and occasionally switched to the so-called "Intermediate State". Using the results of the analysis performed on these data, we present and compare the spectral properties of the source over the whole energy range (5 keV - 1 MeV) covered by the high-energy instruments on board INTEGRAL, in both observed spectral states. Fe line and reflection component evolution occurs with spectral changes in the hard and soft components. The observed behaviour of Cygnus X-1 is consistent with the general picture of galactic black holes. Our results give clues to the physical changes that took place in the system (disc and corona) at almost constant luminosity during the spectral transitions and provide new measures of the spectral model parameters. In particular, during the Intermediate State of 2003 June, we observe in the Cygnus X-1 data a high-energy tail at several hundred keV in excess of the thermal Comptonization model which suggests the presence of an additional non-thermal component., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, 13 pages, 9 figures (3 in colour)

We present a spectral analysis of the e+e- annihilation emission from the Galactic Centre region based on the first year of measurements made with the spectrometer SPI of the INTEGRAL mission. We have found that the annihilation spectrum can be modelled by the sum of a narrow and a broad 511 keV line plus an ortho-Ps continuum. The broad line is detected with a flux of (0.35+/-0.11)e-3 s-1 cm-2. The measured width of 5.4+/-1.2 keV FWHM is in agreement with the expected broadening of 511 keV photons emitted in the annihilation of Ps that are formed by the charge exchange process of slowing down positrons with H atoms. The flux of the narrow line is (0.72+/-0.12)e-3 s-1 cm-2 and its width is 1.3+/-0.4 keV FWHM. The measured ortho-Ps continuum flux yields a fraction of Ps of (96.7+/-2.2)%. To derive in what phase of the interstellar medium positrons annihilate, we have fitted annihilation models calculated for each phase to the data. We have found that 49(+2,-23)% of the annihilation emission comes from the warm neutral phase and 51(+3,-2)% from the warm ionized phase. While we may not exclude that less than 23% of the emission might come from cold gas, we have constrained the fraction of annihilation emission from molecular clouds and hot gas to be less than 8% and 0.5%, respectively. We have compared our knowledge of the interstellar medium in the bulge and the propagation of positrons with our results and found that they are in good agreement if the sources are diffusively distributed and if the initial kinetic energy of positrons is lower than a few MeV. Despite its large filling factor, the lack of annihilation emission from the hot gas is due to its low density, which allows positrons to escape this phase., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A

SIMBOL-X is a hard X-ray mission, operating in the ~ 0.5-70 keV range, which is proposed by a consortium of European laboratories in response to the 2004 call for ideas of CNES for a scientific mission to be flown on a formation flying demonstrator. Relying on two spacecrafts in a formation flying configuration, SIMBOL-X uses for the first time a ~ 30 m focal length X-ray mirror to focus X-rays with energy above 10 keV, resulting in a two orders of magnitude improvement in angular resolution and sensitivity in the hard X-ray range with respect to non focusing techniques. The SIMBOL-X revolutionary instrumental capabilities will allow to elucidate outstanding questions in high energy astrophysics, related in particular to the physics of accretion onto compact objects, to the acceleration of particles to the highest energies, and to the nature of the Cosmic X-Ray background. The mission, which has gone through a thorough assessment study performed by CNES, is expected to start a competitive phase A in autumn 2005, leading to a flight decision at the end of 2006, for a launch in 2012.
