The rhenium-osmium (187Re-187Os) system is a highly versatile chronometer that is regularly applied to a wide range of geological and extraterrestrial materials. In addition to providing geo- or cosmo-chronological information, the Re-Os system can also be used as a tracer of processes across a range of temporal (millennial to gigayear) and spatial scales (lower mantle to cryosphere). An increasing number of sulfide minerals are now routinely dated, which further expands the ability of this system to refine mineral exploration models as society moves toward a new, green economy with related technological needs. An expanding range of natural materials amenable to Re-Os geochronology brings additional complexities in data interpretation and the resultant translation of measured isotopic ratios to a properly contextualized age. Herein, we provide an overview of the 187Re-187Os system as applied to sedimentary rocks, sulfides, and other crustal materials and highlight further innovations on the horizon. Additionally, we outline next steps and best practices required to improve the precision of the chronometer and establish community-wide data reduction procedures, such as the decay constant, regression technique, and software packages to use. These best practices will expand the utility and viability of published results and essential metadata to ensure that such data conform to evolving standards of being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). Theageand natureof the Neoproterozoic--early Paleozoic rift-drift transition has been interpreted differently along the length of the North American Cordillera. The Ediacaran 'upper' group (herein elevated to the Rackla Group) of the Coal Creek inlier, Yukon, Canada, represents a key succession to reconstruct the sedimentation history of northwestern Laurentia across the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary and elucidate the timing of active tectonism during the protracted breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia. These previously undifferentiated late Neoproterozoic--early Paleozoic map units in the Coal Creek inlier are herein formally defined as the Lone, Cliff Creek, Mount Ina, Last Chance, Shade, and Shell Creek formations. New sedimentological and stratigraphic data from these units is used to reconstruct the depositional setting. In the Last Chance Formation, chemostratigraphic observations indicate a ca. 5[per thousand] [[delta].sup.13][C.sub.carb] gradient coincident with the globally recognized ca. 574-567 Ma Shuram carbon isotope excursion. Map and stratigraphic relationships in the overlying Shell Creek Formation provide evidence for latest Ediacaran--middle Cambrian tilting and rift-related sedimentation. This provides evidence for active extension through the Cambrian Miaolingian Series in northwestern Canada, supporting arguments for a multiphase and protracted breakup of Rodinia. There is a temporal correlation between the peak activity of the North Atlantic Igneous Province (NAIP) and the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), suggesting that the NAIP may have initiated and/or prolonged this extreme warming event. However, corroborating a causal relationship is hampered by a scarcity of expanded sedimentary records that contain both climatic and volcanic proxies. One locality hosting such a record is the island of Fur in Denmark, where an expanded pre- to post-PETM succession containing hundreds of NAIP ash layers is exceptionally well preserved. We compiled a range of environmental proxies, including mercury (Hg) anomalies, paleotemperature proxies, and lithium (Li) and osmium (Os) isotopes, to trace NAIP activity, hydrological changes, weathering, and seawater connectivity across this interval. Volcanic proxies suggest that NAIP activity was elevated before the PETM and appears to have peaked during the body of the δ13 C excursion but decreased considerably during the PETM recovery. This suggests that the acme in NAIP activity, dominated by flood basalt volcanism and thermogenic degassing from contact metamorphism, was likely confined to just ∼ 200 kyr (ca. 56.0–55.8 Ma). The hundreds of thick (> 1 cm) basaltic ashes in the post-PETM strata likely represent a change from effusive to explosive activity, rather than an increase in NAIP activity. Detrital δ7 Li values and clay abundances suggest that volcanic ash production increased the basaltic reactive surface area, likely enhancing silicate weathering and atmospheric carbon sequestration in the early Eocene. Signals in lipid biomarkers and Os isotopes, traditionally used to trace paleotemperature and weathering changes, are used here to track seaway connectivity. These proxies indicate that the North Sea was rapidly cut off from the North Atlantic in under 12 kyr during the PETM recovery due to NAIP thermal uplift. Our findings reinforce the hypothesis that the emplacement of the NAIP had a profound and complex impact on Paleocene–Eocene climate, both directly through volcanic and thermogenic degassing and indirectly by driving regional uplift and changing seaway connectivity. Phosphorus (P) is typically considered to be the ultimate limiting nutrient for Earth's biosphere on geologic timescales. As P is monoisotopic, its sedimentary enrichment can provide some insights into how the marine P cycle has changed through time. A previous compilation of shale P enrichments argued for a significant change in P cycling during the Ediacaran Period (635–541 Ma). Here, using an updated P compilation—with more than twice the number of samples—we bolster the case that there was a significant transition in P cycling moving from the Precambrian into the Phanerozoic. However, our analysis suggests this state change may have occurred earlier than previously suggested. Specifically in the updated database, there is evidence for a transition ~35 million years before the onset of the Sturtian Snowball Earth glaciation in the Visingsö Group, potentially divorcing the climatic upheavals of the Neoproterozoic from changes in the Earth's P cycle. We attribute the transition in Earth's sedimentary P record to the onset of a more modern‐like Earth system state characterized by less reducing marine conditions, higher marine P concentrations, and a greater predominance of eukaryotic organisms encompassing both primary producers and consumers. This view is consistent with organic biomarker evidence for a significant eukaryotic contribution to the preserved sedimentary organic matter in this succession and other contemporaneous Tonian marine sedimentary rocks. However, we stress that, even with an expanded dataset, we are likely far from pinpointing exactly when this transition occurred or whether Earth's history is characterized by a single or multiple transitions in the P cycle. Topic include the rise of complex macroscopic life occurred during the Ediacaran Period, an interval that witnessed large-scale disturbances to biogeochemical systems, and the Ediacaran chronostratigraphic framework is of insufficient resolution to provide robust global correlation schemes or test hypotheses for the role of biogeochemical cycling in the evolution of complex life.

Well-preserved strata of the late Tonian Chuar Group exposed in the Grand Canyon host fossil evidence for the development of eukaryotic predation, the presence of unique biomarkers, and large changes in C, S, and Mo isotope chemostratigraphy. Despite the importance of this critical succession, few radioisotopic age constraints are available to place these records into a global context. Here, we couple high-precision U-Pb chemical abrasion-isotope dilution-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) on zircon crystals with the rhenium-osmium (Re-Os) sedimentary and sulfide geochronometer to refine the temporal framework of this pivotal interval of Earth history. Zircons recovered from a tuff within the uppermost Walcott Member of the Kwagunt Formation yield a weighted mean 206Pb-238U age of 729.0 ± 0.9 Ma (mean square of weighted deviates [MSWD] = 0.86), differing significantly from the previous air-abrasion upper-intercept age of 742 ± 6 Ma on zircons from this same horizon. Organic-rich carbonates from the Carbon Canyon Member of the Galeros Formation yield a model 1 Re-Os age of 757.0 ± 6.8 Ma (MSWD = 0.47, n = 8), and an initial Os isotope (187Os/188Os [Osi]) composition of 1.13 ± 0.02. The radiogenic Osi value from this horizon suggests that the basin was restricted from the open ocean during de-position of the Carbon Canyon Member, in agreement with sedimentological and stratigraphic data. The Re-Os geochronology of marcasite (FeS2) nodules from the Awatubi Member of the Kwagunt Formation yield a model 1 age of 751.0 ± 7.6 Ma (MSWD = 0.37, n = 5), with an Osi of 0.44 ± 0.01. This Re-Os date is interpreted to constrain the growth of the marcasite nodules in the Awatubi Member during deposition. The formation of sulfides and the less radiogenic Osi value are consistent with an influx of sulfate-laden seawater to the basin during depOsition of the Kwagunt Formation. Attempts to apply the Re-Os geochronometer to the Walcott and Tanner Members of the Chuar Group failed to yield meaningful ages, despite elevated Re enrichments (>20 ng/g). The Re-Os data from these units yielded negative Osi values, which suggest disturbance to the Re-Os system. The low Os abundances (typically <100 pg/g) relative to the amount expected based on the elevated Re abundances suggest leaching of Os due to oxidative weathering on geologically recent time scales. Finally, the Carbon Canyon Member provides a useful case study for quantifying how input uncertainties in the Re-Os geochronometer propagate into the resulting age uncertainty, and we discuss the protocols that will yield the best improvement in age precision for future studies. The U-Pb and Re-Os geochronology presented here illustrates the power of coupling these systems and the importance of recent improvements in both methods.
