This information provides the necessary ingredients to draft an optimisation strategy for the MERLIN case studies on themes including multiple goals, society, restoration techniques, economy, policy and regulations. 3. This information offers a basis for peer-to-peer learning between the case studies and those in other regions. 4. The optimisation strategies provide new insights and broaden perspectives on restoration actions in individual case studies. 5. Identifying the potential for multiple Green Deal goal achievements will initiate broader dialogues with stakeholders and provide new incentives for restoration with multiple benefits for local people. 6. Capacity building on financial arrangements will create new opportunities for restoration actions. 7. Clear and agile policy arrangements are needed to enhance stakeholder participation in restoration actions. 8. The visioning, planning and evaluation of restoration actions are long-term activities that benefit from adaptive approaches and sound longterm monitoring programs on multiple aspects of biophysical and socio-ecological systems.

Peatland restoration aims to achieve pristine water pathway conditions to recover dispersed wetness, water quality, biodiversity and carbon sequestration. Restoration monitoring needs new methods for understanding the spatial effects of restoration in peatlands. We introduce an approach using high-resolution data produced with an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) and supported by the available light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data to reveal the hydrological impacts of elevation changes in peatlands due to restoration. The impacts were assessed by analyzing flow accumulation and the SAGA Wetness Index (SWI). UAS campaigns were implemented at two boreal minerotrophic peatland sites in degraded and restored states. Simultaneously, the control campaigns mapped pristine sites to reveal the method sensitivity of external factors. The results revealed that the data accuracy is sufficient for describing the primary elevation changes caused by excavation. The cell-wise root mean square error in elevation was on average 48 mm when two pristine UAS campaigns were compared with each other, and 98 mm when each UAS campaign was compared with the LiDAR data. Furthermore, spatial patterns of more subtle peat swelling and subsidence were found. The restorations were assessed as successful, as dispersing the flows increased the mean wetness by 2.9–6.9%, while the absolute changes at the pristine sites were 0.4–2.4%. The wetness also became more evenly distributed as the standard deviation decreased by 13–15% (a 3.1–3.6% change for pristine). The total length of the main flow routes increased by 25–37% (a 3.1–8.1% change for pristine), representing the increased dispersion and convolution of flow. The validity of the method was supported by the field-determined soil water content (SWC), which showed a statistically significant correlation (R2 = 0.26–0.42) for the restoration sites but not for the control sites, possibly due to their upslope catchment areas being too small. Despite the uncertainties related to the heterogenic soil properties and complex groundwater interactions, we conclude the method to have potential for estimating changed flow paths and wetness following peatland restoration.

HIGHLIGHTS • In this commentary, we highlight new possibilities and suggest vital steps forward for the scientific discipline within the Nordic hydrological research. • By providing a common direction, we hope to increase the awareness, and thus not only accelerate progress in the hydrological community but also emphasize the importance of hydrological knowledge for serving other fields of science and society. Abstract The 21st century has brought new challenges and opportunities and has also increased demands on the Nordic hydrological community. Our hydrological science focus and approaches need rethinking and adaptation to the changing requirements of society in response to climate change and human interventions, in search of more comprehensive and cross-disciplinary solutions. This commentary highlights new possibilities and suggests vital steps forward for the scientific discipline within Nordic hydrological research. By providing a common direction, we hope to increase awareness, accelerate progress in the hydrological community, and emphasize the importance of hydrological knowledge for serving other fields of science and society at large. We hope that our vision and the opportunities we identify will raise awareness of the scientific discipline and assist in the long-term development of the Nordic hydrological frontier in the 21st century.

Highlights • Fe has a key role in biogeochemical and ecological contexts in boreal catchments. • Fe has many harmful impacts on aquatic organisms and ecosystems. • Drivers of Fe transport should be better known in water management. • Catchment-scale approaches are required to create effective management of Fe. Iron (Fe) is an important element in aquatic ecosystems worldwide because it is intimately tied with multiple abiotic and biotic phenomena. Here, we give a survey of manifold influences of Fe, and the key factors affecting it in the boreal catchments and their waters. It includes the perspectives of biogeochemistry, hydrology, ecology, and river basin management. We emphasize views on the dynamics and impacts of different forms of Fe in riverine environments, including organic colloids and particles, as well as inorganic fractions. We also provide perspectives for land use management in boreal catchments and suggest guidelines for decision making and water management. Based on our survey, the main emphases of water protection and management programs should be (i) prevention of Fe mobilization from soil layers by avoiding unnecessary land-use activities and minimizing soil disturbance in high-risk areas; (ii) disconnecting Fe-rich ground water discharge from directly reaching watercourses; and (iii) decreasing transport of Fe to watercourses by applying efficient water pollution control approaches. These approaches may require specific methods that should be given attention depending on catchment conditions in different areas. Finally, we highlight issues requiring additional research on boreal catchments. A key issue is to increase our understanding of the role of Fe in the utilization of DOM in riverine food webs, which are typically highly heterotrophic. More knowledge is needed on the metabolic and behavioral resistance mechanisms that aquatic organisms, such as algae, invertebrates, and fish, have developed to counter the harmful impacts of Fe in rivers with naturally high Fe and DOM concentrations. It is also emphasized that to fulfil the needs presented above, as well as to develop effective methods for decreasing the harmful impacts of Fe in water management, the biogeochemical processes contributing to Fe transport from catchments via rivers to estuaries should be better understood.

Tämän selvityksen tarkoituksena on tuottaa kirjallisuuskatsaus ja siihen pohjautuvia johtopäätöksiä soiden ennallistamisen ilmasto-, vesistö- ja suoluontovaikutuksista. Selvitys pyrkii erityisesti kasaamaan yhteen uusimpia tutkimustuloksia ja aineistoja ennallistamisen vaikutuksiin liittyen ja toisaalta muodostamaan kokonaiskuvan laaja-alaisempaa soiden ennallistamisstrategiaa silmällä pitäen. Suoekosysteemit reagoivat kokonai-suutena varsin hyvin perinteisiin ennallistamistoimiin. Ennallistaminen ei kuitenkaan ole ongelmatonta, sillä ennallistamistoimet eli yleensä kaivin- ja metsäkonetyöt sekä ennallistamisen jälkeisen alkuvaiheen voimakkaat ekosysteemin muutokset voivat aiheuttaa yhteiskunnan ja lähiekosysteemien kannalta negatiivisia vaikutuksia, erityisesti ilmastoon ja vesistöihin. Myös yksityiskohtaisten lajistollisten tavoitteiden saavuttaminen voi tämänhetkisillä kustannustehokkailla, mutta melko yksinkertaisilla ja karkeilla ennallistamismenetelmillä olla epätodennäköistä. Tämänhetkiset ennallistamismenetelmät ja -resurssit sekä toiminnallinen kapasiteetti tai yhteiskunnalliset mahdollisuudet huomioiden tarvitaan huolella priorisoitua toimien kohdentamista luonnon monimuotoisuuden kannalta vaikuttavan lopputuloksen aikaansaamiseksi. Rehevimmät suot ovat houkuttelevimpia ennallistamiskohteita, kun otetaan huomioon sekä monimuotoisuus- että ilmastonäkökulmat. Rehevillä soilla piilee kuitenkin riski isompaan ennallistamistoimenpiteiden aiheuttamaan vesistökuormitukseen, joten vesistöriskien tunnistaminen ja tehokas minimointi on tärkeää. Ristiriidoista huolimatta ennallistaminen vaikuttaa kustannustehokkaalta tavalta käynnistää palautuminen kohti luonnontilaista suota. peerReviewed

Typpi ja/tai raskasmetallipitoista kuormitusta vesistöihin muodostuu mm. kaivostoiminnasta, jätevedenpuhdistamoilta, hulevesistä, maataloudesta ja turvetuotannosta. Monissa näistä kohteista passiiviset vesienkäsittelymenetelmät voivat olla ratkaisu tai osaratkaisu vesien puhdistamiseen. Yksittäisiä passiivisia puhdistusratkaisuja, kuten erilaisia kosteikkoja, onkin jo käytössä monissa paikoissa. Kuitenkaan yksittäisellä ratkaisulla ei usein pystytä optimaalisesti erilaisten aineiden puhdistamiseen. Tällöin erityyppisten passiivisten yksikkökomponenttien yhdistämisellä voitaisiin toteuttaa jäte- tai valumavesien puhdistusta siten, että puhdistusratkaisu huomioi paremmin kuormituslähteen vedenlaadun ja sen puhdistustarpeet. Uuden tiedon tuottaminen hybridiratkaisujen suunnittelusta ja mitoituksesta kylmiin olosuhteisiin olikin HybArkt -hankkeen yhtenä tarkoituksena. Lisäksi hankkeessa tarkoituksena oli tutkia ja optimoida pohjoisiin olosuhteisiin sopeutuneiden luonnonkasvien, sienten ja bakteerien kykyä pidättää vedestä typpeä ja raskasmetalleja. Näiden pohjalta tavoitteeksi asetettiin erilaisten toimintojen vesistökuormituksen pienentäminen kustannustehokkaasti passiivisilla menetelmillä. HybArkt -hankkeessa toteutettiin aluksi kirjallisuuskatsaus erilaisien passiivisten vesienkäsittely-yksiköiden toimivuudesta. Tämän tiedon ja pilottikohteista (Pyhäsalmen kaivos, Kallon jätevedenpuhdistamo ja Levin hulevesiojasto), kerätyn tiedon perusteella suunniteltiin, mitoitettiin ja rakennettiin hybridipilottirakenteet. Pyhäsalmen kaivoksen pilottirakenteessa käsiteltiin ns. eristysojan vesiä, jotka koostuivat rikastushiekka-altaiden suotovesistä, metsäalueelta tulevista valumavesistä ja vanhan metalleilla kontaminoituneen alueen vesistä. Täällä erityisesti metallien, kuten kuparin, sinkin ja raudan, poisto oli olennaista. Kallon jätevedenpuhdistamolla keskityttiin typenpoiston tehostamiseen. Levin hulevesien purkuputken suulle rakennetussa käsittelyrakenteessa tavoitteena oli sekä typen että metallien poisto. Pilottirakenteita seurattiin mm. vesinäytteenotoin 1–2 vuoden ajan. Lisäksi mitoitusta ja/tai suunnittelua toteutettiin myös muille toimijoille, ja hankkeen aikana kerätyn tiedon pohjalta laadittiin mitoitus- ja suunnittelutyökalu. Tulosten perusteella Pyhäsalmen pilottiyksiköllä saatiin hyvin poistettua monia metalleja, kuten kuparia, sinkkiä ja rautaa. Kuitenkin havaittiin, että pH:n nostoyksikkö oli liian tukkeutumisherkkä ja rautaa pääsi vielä paljon myös bioreaktoreihin. Kallon jätevedenpuhdistamolla se osa ammoniumtypestä, mikä saatiin muutettua nitriitti-nitraattitypeksi, saatiin myös poistumaan pilottirakennekokonaisuuden avulla. Levin pilottirakenteessa huomattiin, että liian suuri virtausnopeus rajoittaa puhdistusprosesseja, sekä huleveden tason mukaisten metallipitoisuuksien poistossa on haasteita, mutta virtausnopeutta pienentämällä erityisesti typen puhdistusta saatiin tehostettua. Vaikka jokaisessa pilottirakenteessa oli omat haasteensa, saatiin niistä kuitenkin lupaavia tuloksia ja havaintoja, millä niiden toimivuutta voidaan parantaa. Tutkimus on toteutettu Euroopan Aluekehitysrahaston osarahoittamassa hankkeessa ’Passiiviset hybridipuhdistusratkaisut arktisten valumavesien typen ja raskasmetallien puhdistamiseen’ (HybArkt, 2018–2020).

Aquaculture needs practical solutions for nutrient removal to achieve sustainable fish production. Passive denitrifying bioreactors may provide an ecological, low-cost and low-maintenance approach for wastewater nitrogen removal. However, innovative organic materials are needed to enhance nitrate removal from the low carbon effluents in intensive recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). In this study, we tested three additional carbon sources, including biochar, dried Sphagnum sp. moss and industrial potato residues, to enhance the performance of woodchip bioreactors treating the low carbon RAS wastewater. We assessed nitrate (NO3−) removal and microbial community composition during a one-year in situ column test with real aquaculture wastewater. We found no significant differences in the NO3− removal rates between the woodchip-only bioreactor and bioreactors with a zone of biochar or Sphagnum sp. moss (maximum removal rate 31–33 g NO3−-N m−3 d−1), but potato residues increased NO3− removal rate to 38 g NO3−-N m−3 d−1, with stable annual reduction efficiency of 93%. The readily available carbon released from potato residues increased NO3−-N removal capacity of the bioreactor even at higher inflow concentrations (>52 mg L−1). The microbial community and its predicted functional potential in the potato residue bioreactor differed markedly from those of the other bioreactors. Adding potato residues to woodchip material enabled smaller bioreactor size to be used for NO3− removal. This study introduced industrial potato by-product as an alternative carbon source for the woodchip denitrification process, and the encouraging results may pave the way toward growth of blue bioeconomy using the RAS. peerReviewed
