“Far from the dust” is an important concept in Shitao’s pictorial system, crystallizing his profound reflection about the relation between art, the individual, society, and nature. This article aims to analyze the rich semantics of this concept. This study will reveal that the assertion of “Far from the dust” does not imply a segregation of the individual from mundane society, nor an evasion of the dirtiness of earthly life. This pictorial concept is framed within the philosophy of solitude in Chinese art. Through non-attachment to impurity and purity, a state of serene and contemplative observation of the essence of art is achieved, surpassing temporal and spatial limitations, until the dichotomy between subject and object dissolves. This triadic semantics intertwines into a chain of meanings connoting the supreme ideal of landscape painting, which is the Tao., “Lejos del polvo” es un concepto importante en el sistema pictórico de Shitao, que cristaliza su profunda reflexión sobre la interrelación entre el arte, el individuo, la sociedad y la naturaleza. Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar la rica semántica de este concepto. En este estudio se revelará que la afirmación de “Lejos del polvo” no implica una segregación del individuo con la sociedad mundana, ni tampoco una evasión de las suciedades de la vida terrenal. Este concepto pictórico se enmarca en la filosofía de la soledad en el arte chino. Mediante la no adhesión a lo impuro y lo puro, el artista crea un estado de observación sereno y contemplativo que permite vislumbrar la esencia del arte. En este estado, se logra superar las limitaciones temporales y espaciales, hasta que se disuelve la dicotomía entre el sujeto y el objeto. Esta tríada semántica se entrelaza en una cadena de significados que apuntan al ideal supremo del paisajismo, que es el tao. &nbsp

The relationship between text and image constitutes an important literary topic in contemporary visual culture. This article proposes to investigate the representative strategies for the construction of the identity of the abstinent sage and to inquire into the expressive functions, similarities, and differences between text and image through a comparison between a painting (c. 1680-1689) by Shi Tao and a bronze engraving by Vaenius and Brum (1672)., La relación entre texto e imagen constituye un tópico literario y un tema importante en la cultura visual contemporánea. El presente artículo propone indagar las estrategias representativas para la construcción de la identidad del sabio abstinente e inquirir las funciones expresivas, las semejanzas y las diferencias entre texto e imagen mediante la comparación entre una pintura (c. 1680-1689) de Shi Tao y un grabado de bronce de Vaenius y Brum (1672).

The hermit is a typical theme in the visual discourses of Literati Painting. Rising from the 11th century, the Literati Painting is very expressive of the authors’ thoughts and feelings, which makes an artistic space for catharsis. Therefore, the image of hermit has become a symbol of the artists’ virtues and aspirations. However, there is a certain difference between the idealized image and the real image of the artist. This embellishment of the image is not a deliberate trick of the artists, but a result of multiple factors. This paper aims to explore the construction of the artist’s image in the paintings of the 17th century through the analysis of Shi Tao's two works with the theme of “Contemplating the yellow flowers”., El ermitaño constituyó un tema tópico en los discursos visuales de la pintura de los literatos. Este nuevo género de arte surgido a partir del siglo XI destaca por ser un espacio artístico de expresión de sensaciones e ideas personales en el que dar libre curso a las emociones. El anacoreta se convirtió asimismo en un «símbolo» que transmite las virtudes y las aspiraciones del mismo artista. No obstante, existe cierta diferencia entre la imagen idealizada y la imagen real del artista. Este embellecimiento de la imagen no responde a una deliberada malicia del artista, sino que es el resultado del encuentro de varios factores. Este trabajo propone inquirir los motivos de la construcción de la identidad idealizada del artista en las pinturas del siglo XVII mediante el análisis de dos cuadros de Shi Tao con el tema de la contemplación de las flores amarillas.  &nbsp
