Using satellite observations over the recent two decades, the authors quantify the biophysical impact of earth greening on land surface temperature and show a considerable cooling effect in India and China, important for climate mitigation.

Accurate quantification of turbulent heat fluxes [THF, comprising sensible heat flux (SHF) and latent heat flux (LHF)] and Bowen ratio ( β , ratio of SHF and LHF) is essential for understanding the air–sea interaction. However, the biased estimates of SHF and LHF by widely applied bulk aerodynamic models, and the separate estimates of SHF and LHF by data-driven models, both may result in unrealistic β estimates. This study for the first time innovatively proposes a Bowen ratio-informed data-driven model (BrTHF) for coordinating the estimations of THF and β using the multivariate random forest (RF) technique and a combination of eddy covariance flux observations and meteorological and oceanic observations collected from 53 historical cruises. The result shows that the BrTHF model could not only achieve high-accuracy SHF and LHF estimates, but also avoid the outliers of β estimates that were commonly found in un-synergistic RF and well-known Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiment 3.5 models.

Accurate quantification of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) is integral for enhancing our understanding of the global carbon budget and climate change. The light use efficiency (LUE) model is undoubtedly the most extensively applied method for GPP estimation. However, the two-leaf (TL)-LUE model using a ‘potential’ sunlit leaf area index (LAI _su ) can separate a portion of LAI _su even when the canopy does not receive any direct radiation, leading to the underestimation of GPP under cloudy and overcast days. Here, we developed a dynamic-leaf (DL) LUE model by introducing an ‘effective’ LAI _su to improve GPP estimation, which considers the comprehensive contribution of LAI _su when the canopy does and does not receive direct radiation. In particular, the new model decreases LAI _su to zero when direct radiation reaches zero. Our evaluation at eight ChinaFLUX sites showed that (1) the DL-LUE model outperformed the most well-known BL-LUE (namely, the MOD17 GPP algorithm) and TL-LUE models in reproducing the daily in situ GPP, especially at four forest sites [reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) from 1.74 g C m ^−2 d ^−1 and 1.53 g C m ^−2 d ^−1 to 1.36 g C m ^−2 d ^−1 and increasing the coefficient of determination ( R ^2 ) from 0.74 and 0.79–0.82, respectively]. Moreover, the improvements were particularly pronounced at longer temporal scales, as indicated by the RMSE decreasing from 29.32 g C m ^−2 month ^−1 and28.11 g C m ^−2 month ^−1 to 25.81 g C m ^−2 month ^−1 at a monthly scale and from 231.82 g C m ^−2 yr ^−1 and 221.60 g C m ^−2 yr ^−1 –200.00 g C m ^−2 yr ^−1 at a yearly scale; (2) the DL-LUE model mitigated the systematic underestimation of the in situ GPP by both the TL-LUE and BL-LUE models when the clearness index (CI) was below 0.5, as indicated by the Bias reductions of 0.25 g C m ^−2 d ^−1 and 0.46 g C m ^−2 d ^−1 , respectively; and (3) the contributions of the shaded GPP to the total GPP from the DL-LUE model were higher by 0.07–0.16 than those from the TL-LUE model across the eight ChinaFLUX sites. The proposed parsimonious and effective DL-LUE model not only has great potential for improving global GPP estimations but also provides a more mechanism-based approach for partitioning the total GPP into its shaded and sunlit components.

Abstract Evapotranspiration (ET) is the major component of the hydrology cycle. Satellites provide a convenient way for gathering information to estimate regional ET. The most widely applied method for converting the instantaneous satellite measurement to daily scale assumes that evaporative fraction (EF), defined as the ratio of ET to the available energy, is constant during the daytime. However, this method was proved to underestimate the daily ET. This study implemented a theoretically improved EF algorithm to calculate daily ET with the decoupling factor method based on the Penman‐Monteith and McNaughton‐Jarvis equations. Seven improved algorithms were developed by assuming that various parameters remain constant during the day. The satellite‐based ET estimates were compared with seven local flux tower measurements in China. The results showed that: (a) The original ET method calculated the daily evaporation more accurately than the other algorithms. However, the good fit was based on two compensating inaccuracies. Compared to the flux tower measurement, the original ET method underestimated the daily EF by 26% and overestimated the daily net radiation by 30%. (b) Six of the seven proposed algorithms underpredicted the daily ET by 30%–60%, mainly due to the inaccurate daily net radiation. (c) The algorithm that assumed that the instantaneous decoupling parameter Ω∗ was equal to its daily value method calculated EF and ET with relative errors of 8% and 10% separately when the inaccurate estimated daily net radiation was replaced by the observed flux tower data.

Accurate quantification of gross primary production (GPP) in agroecosystems not only improves our ability to understand the global carbon budget but also plays a critical role in human welfare and development. Light-use efficiency (LUE) models have been widely applied in estimating regional and global GPP due to their simple structure and clear physical basis. However, maximum LUE ( ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ ), a key photosynthetic parameter in LUE models, has generally been treated as a constant, leading to common overestimation and underestimation of low and high magnitudes of GPP, respectively. Here, we propose a parsimonious and practical two-stage LUE (TS-LUE) model to improve GPP estimates by (a) considering seasonal variations of ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ , and (b) separately re-parameterizing ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ in the green-up and senescence stages. The TS-LUE model is inter-compared with state-of-the-art ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ –static moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer-GPP, eddy-covariance-LUE, and vegetation production models. Validation results at 14 FLUXNET sites for five crop species showed that: (a) the TS-LUE model significantly reduced the large bias at high- and low-level GPP as produced by the three ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ –static LUE models for all crop types; and (b) the TS-LUE model generated daily GPP estimates in good agreement with in-situ measurements and was found to outperform the three ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ –static LUE models. Especially compared to the well-known moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer-GPP, the TS-LUE model could remarkably decrease the root mean square error (in gC m ^−2 d ^−1 ) by 24.2% and 35.4% (from 3.84 to 2.91 and 2.48) and could increase the coefficient of determination by 14.7% and 20% (from 0.75 to 0.86 and 0.9) when the leaf area index (LAI) and infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIR _v ) were used to re-parameterize the ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ , respectively. The TS-LUE model provides a brand-new perspective on the re-parameterization of ${\varepsilon _{{\text{max}}}}$ and indicates great potential for improving daily agroecosystem GPP estimates at a global scale.

The spatially heterogeneous nature and geographical scale of surface urban heat island (SUHI) driving mechanisms remain largely unknown, as most previous studies have focused solely on their global performance and impact strength. This paper analyzes diurnal and nocturnal SUHIs in China based on the multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model for 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2018. Compared to results obtained using the ordinary least square (OLS) model, the MGWR model has a lower corrected Akaike information criterion value and significantly improves the model’s coefficient of determination (OLS: 0.087–0.666, MGWR: 0.616–0.894). The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and nighttime light (NTL) are the most critical drivers of daytime and nighttime SUHIs, respectively. In terms of model bandwidth, population and Δfine particulate matter are typically global variables, while ΔNDVI, intercept (i.e., spatial context), and NTL are local variables. The nighttime coefficient of ΔNDVI is significantly negative in the more economically developed southern coastal region, while it is significantly positive in northwestern China. Our study not only improves the understanding of the complex drivers of SUHIs from a multiscale perspective but also provides a basis for urban heat island mitigation by more precisely identifying the heterogeneity of drivers.

Air temperature inversion (ATI), which usually occurs at the near surface boundary layer in the atmosphere, influences the thermal path atmospheric upwelling and downwelling radiances. Because it is difficult to determine the occurrence of temperature inversion from satellite data, the influence of ATI on the retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) was not considered in the development of LST retrieval algorithm. This paper aims to analyze and reduce the influence of ATI on LST retrieval in the generalized split-window (GSW) algorithm. The GSW coefficients are reparameterized by using the ATI profiles from the thermodynamic initial guess retrieval cloud-free database. Comparison of the root-mean-square errors calculated before and after using the reparameterized coefficients in the GSW algorithm from the numerical simulations showed that the LST retrieval accuracy could be improved by 0.71 K for viewing zenith angle equivalent to 60°. Intercomparisons using the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer products MOD11_L2/MYD11_L2 and in situ LST measured at the Hailar field site in northeastern Inner Mongolia, China, showed that the LST retrieval accuracy could be improved by 0.4 K using the reparamerization coefficients in the GSW algorithm when the atmosphere is occurred by ATI.

In a previous study, a daily evaporative fraction (EF) parameterization scheme was derived based on day–night differences in surface temperature, air temperature, and net radiation. Considering the advantage that incoming solar radiation can be readily retrieved from remotely sensed data in comparison with surface net radiation, this study simplified the daily EF parameterization scheme using incoming solar radiation as an input. Daily EF estimates from the simplified scheme were nearly equivalent to the results from the original scheme. In situ measurements from six Ameriflux sites with different land covers were used to validate the new simplified EF parameterization scheme. Results showed that daily EF estimates for clear skies were consistent with the in situ EF corrected by the residual energy method, showing a coefficient of determination of 0.586 and a root mean square error of 0.152. Similar results were also obtained for partly clear sky conditions. The non-closure of the measured energy and heat fluxes and the uncertainty in determining fractional vegetation cover were likely to cause discrepancies in estimated daily EF and measured counterparts. The daily EF estimates of different land covers indicate that the constant coefficients in the simplified EF parameterization scheme are not strongly site-specific.

Soil water content (SWC) is a crucial variable in the thermal infrared research and is the major control for land surface hydrological processes at the watershed scale. Estimating the surface SWC from remotely sensed data using the triangle method proposed by Price has been demonstrated in previous studies. In this study, a new soil moisture index (Temperature Rising Rate Vegetation Dryness Index—TRRVDI) is proposed based on a triangle constructed using the mid-morning land surface temperature (LST) rising rate and the vegetation index to estimate the regional SWC. The temperature at the dry edge of the triangle is determined by the surface energy balance principle. The temperature at the wet edge is assumed to be equal to the air temperature. The mid-morning land surface temperature rising rate is calculated using Meteosat Second Generation—Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (MSG-SEVIRI) LST products over 4 cloud-free days (day of year: 206, 211, 212, 242) in 2007. The developed TRRVDI is validated by in situ measurements from 19 meteorological stations in Spain. The results indicate that the coefficient of determination (R2) between the TRRVDI derived using the theoretical limiting edges and the in situ SWC measurements is greater than that derived using the observed limiting edges. The R2 values are 0.46 and 0.32; respectively (p < 0.05). Additionally, the TRRVDI is much better than the soil moisture index that was developed using one-time LST and fractional vegetation cover (FVC) with the theoretically determined limiting edges.

The diurnal cycle of land surface temperature (LST) is an important element of the climate system. Geostationary satellites can provide the diurnal cycle of LST with low spatial resolution and incomplete global coverage, which limits its applications in some studies. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the diurnal cycle of LST at high temporal and spatial resolution from clear-sky MODIS data. This method was evaluated using the MSG-SEVIRI-derived LSTs. The results indicate that this method fits the diurnal cycle of LST well, with root mean square error (RMSE) values less than 1 K for most pixels. Because MODIS provides at most four observations per day at a given location, this method was further evaluated using only four MSG-SEVIRI-derived LSTs corresponding to the MODIS overpass times (10:30, 13:30, 22:30, and 01:30 local solar time). The results show that the RMSE values using only four MSG-SEVIRI-derived LSTs are approximately two times larger than those using all LSTs. The spatial distribution of the modeled LSTs at the MODIS pixel scale is presented from 07:00 to 05:00 local solar time of the next day with an increment of 2 hours. The diurnal cycle of the modeled LSTs describes the temporal evolution of the LSTs at the MODIS pixel scale.

Continuous high spatio-temporal resolution monitoring of evapotranspiration (ET) is critical for water resource management and the quantification of irrigation water efficiency at both global and local scales. However, available remote sensing satellites cannot generally provide ET data at both high spatial and temporal resolutions. Data fusion methods have been widely applied to estimate ET at a high spatio-temporal resolution. Nevertheless, most fusion methods applied to ET are initially used to integrate land surface reflectance, the spectral index and land surface temperature, and few studies completely consider the influencing factor of ET. To overcome this limitation, this paper presents an improved ET fusion method, namely, the spatio-temporal adaptive data fusion algorithm for evapotranspiration mapping (SADFAET), by introducing critical surface temperature (the corresponding temperature to decide soil moisture), importing the weights of surface ET-indicative similarity (the influencing factor of ET, which is estimated from remote sensing data) and modifying the spectral similarity (the differences in spectral characteristics of different spatial resolution images) for the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (ESTARFM). We fused daily Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and periodic Landsat 8 ET data in the SADFAET for the experimental area downstream of the Heihe River basin from April to October 2015. The validation results, based on ground-based ET measurements, indicated that the SADFAET could successfully fuse MODIS and Landsat 8 ET data (mean percent error: −5%), with a root mean square error of 45.7 W/m2, whereas the ESTARFM performed slightly worse, with a root mean square error of 50.6 W/m2. The more physically explainable SADFAET could be a better alternative to the ESTARFM for producing ET at a high spatio-temporal resolution.

Based on surface energy balance and the assumption of fairly invariant evaporative fraction (EF) during daytime, this study proposes a new parameterization scheme of directly estimating daily EF. Daily EF is parameterized as a function of temporal variations in surface temperature, air temperature, and net radiation. The proposed EF parameterization scheme can well reproduce daily EF estimates from a soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer (SVAT) model with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.13 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.719. When input variables from in situ measurements at the Yucheng station in North China are used, daily EF estimated by the proposed method is in good agreement with measurements from the eddy covariance system corrected by the residual energy method with an R2 of 0.857 and an RMSE of 0.119. MODIS/Aqua remotely sensed data were also applied to estimate daily EF. Though there are some inconsistencies between the remotely sensed daily EF estimates and in situ measurements due to errors in input variables and measurements, the result from the proposed parameterization scheme shows a slight improvement to SEBS-estimated EF with remotely sensed instantaneous inputs.

An overview of the commonly applied evapotranspiration (ET) models using remotely sensed data is given to provide insight into the estimation of ET on a regional scale from satellite data. Generally, these models vary greatly in inputs, main assumptions and accuracy of results, etc. Besides the generally used remotely sensed multi-spectral data from visible to thermal infrared bands, most remotely sensed ET models, from simplified equations models to the more complex physically based two-source energy balance models, must rely to a certain degree on ground-based auxiliary measurements in order to derive the turbulent heat fluxes on a regional scale. We discuss the main inputs, assumptions, theories, advantages and drawbacks of each model. Moreover, approaches to the extrapolation of instantaneous ET to the daily values are also briefly presented. In the final part, both associated problems and future trends regarding these remotely sensed ET models were analyzed to objectively show the limitations and promising aspects of the estimation of regional ET based on remotely sensed data and ground-based measurements.

The variation of aerosols, especially dust aerosol, in time and space plays an important role in climate forcing studies. Aerosols can effectively reduce land surface longwave emission and re-emit energy at a colder temperature, which makes it difficult to estimate downwelling surface longwave radiation (DSLR) with satellite data. Using the latest atmospheric radiative transfer code (MODTRAN 5.0), we have simulated the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and DSLR under different land surface types and atmospheric profile conditions. The results show that dust aerosol has an obvious “warming” effect to longwave radiation compared with other aerosols; that aerosol longwave radiative forcing (ALRF) increased with the increasing of aerosol optical depth (AOD); and that the atmospheric water vapor content (WVC) is critical to the understanding of ALRF. A method is proposed to improve the accuracy of DSLR estimation from satellite data for the skies under heavy dust aerosols. The AOD and atmospheric WVC under cloud-free conditions with a relatively simple satellite-based radiation model yielding the high accurate DSLR under heavy dust aerosol are used explicitly as model input to reduce the effects of dust aerosol on the estimation of DSLR. Validations of the proposed model with satellites data and field measurements show that it can estimate the DSLR accurately under heavy dust aerosol skies. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) are 20.4 W/m2 and 24.2 W/m2 for Terra and Aqua satellites, respectively, at the Yingke site, and the biases are 2.7 W/m2 and 9.6 W/m2, respectively. For the Arvaikheer site, the RMSEs are 23.2 W/m2 and 19.8 W/m2 for Terra and Aqua, respectively, and the biases are 7.8 W/m2 and 10.5 W/m2, respectively. The proposed method is especially applicable to acquire relatively high accurate DSLR under heavy dust aerosol using MODIS data with available WVC and AOD data.
