Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) experience unbalanced loads and platform motion due to the coupling of variable wind and wave loads, which leads to output power fluctuation and increased fatigue loads. This paper introduces a new blade pitch control strategy for FOWTs that combines fuzzy logic with a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and a proportional-integral (PI) controller. The fuzzy PI controller dynamically adjusts the PI control gains to regulate rotor speed and stabilize output power. Fuzzy LQR is employed for individual pitch control, utilizing fuzzy logic to adaptively update feedback gains to achieve stable power output, suppress platform motion, and reduce fatigue load. Co-simulations conducted with OpenFAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) and MATLAB/Simulink under diverse conditions demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over traditional PI control. The results show significant reductions in platform pitch, roll, and heave motion by 17%, 27%, and 48%, respectively; blade out-of-plane, pitch, and flapwise bending moments are reduced by 38%, 44%, and 36%; and the tower base roll and pitch bending moments are reduced by up to 29% and 22%, respectively. The proposed control scheme exhibits exceptional environmental adaptability, enhancing FOWT’s power regulation, platform stability, and reliability in complex marine environments.

Abstract Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) always suffer from severe abdominal pain and appear to be at high risk for colorectal cancer. Recently, the co-delivery of targeted drugs and gut microbiota has developed into an attractive strategy. A new strategy using gut microbiota fermentation to overcome the interspace diffuse resistance from the mucus layer to control drug release in inflammatory bowel sites (IBS sites) has not yet been available. Here, we designed an alginate hydrogel microsphere encapsulating bifidobacterium (Bac) and drug-modified nanoscale dietary fibers (NDFs). The hydrogel microsphere is responsible for protecting drugs from acidic and multi-enzymatic environments and delivering drugs to the colorectum. Subsequently, the fermentation of Bac by digesting NDFs and proteins as carbon and nitrogen sources can promote drug release and play a probiotic role in the gut microbiota. In vitro evidence indicated that small-sized NDF (NDF-1) could significantly promote short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) expression. Notably, NDF-1 hydrogel microspheres showed a boost release of 5-ASA in the IBS sites, resulting in the amelioration of gut inflammation and remodeling of gut microbiota in chronic colitis mice. This study developed a controlled release system based on microbial fermentation for the treatment of IBD.

This paper details the transformation of the velocity or position-tracking problem of a class of uncertain systems using finite time stability control for first-order uncertain systems. A new composite extended-state observer sliding mode (ESOSM) scheme is proposed, which includes an adaptive super-twisting-like ESO and an adaptive super-twisting controller. The adaptive super-twisting controller is implemented through a barrier function-based second-order sliding mode algorithm. To further reduce control chattering and improve control performance, the adaptive super-twisting-like ESO, which employs high-order terms in the super-twisting algorithm to accelerate convergence, is designed to observe the lumped uncertainty in real time. The advantages of the proposed scheme are verified by a numerical example and application with regard to floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) pitch control. Compared with proportional integral (PI) and adaptive super-twisting sliding mode (ASTSM) schemes, better results are obtained in velocity tracking and fatigue load suppression. For the FOWT pitch control application, the platform roll, pitch, and yaw are decreased by 3%, 2%, and 4%, respectively, compared to the PI scheme at an average turbulent wind speed of 17 m/s and turbulence intensity of 17.27%.

The floating platform motion of an offshore wind turbine system can exacerbate output power fluctuations and increase fatigue loads. This paper proposes a new scheme based on a fast second-order sliding mode (SOSM) control and an adaptive super-twisting extended state observer to suppress the platform motion and power fluctuation. Firstly, an affine nonlinear model of the floating wind turbine pitch system is constructed. Then, a fast SOSM pitch control law is adopted to adjust the blade pitch angle, and a new adaptive super-twisting extended state observer is constructed to achieve total disturbance observation. Finally, simulations are conducted under two cases of wind and wave conditions based on FAST (fatigue, aerodynamics, structures, and turbulence) and MATLAB/Simulink. Compared with the traditional proportional integral (PI) control scheme and standard super-twisting control scheme, the platform roll under the proposed scheme is reduced by 13% and 4%, and pitch is reduced by 16% and 3% in Case 1. Correspondingly, the roll is reduced by 9% and 15%, and pitch is reduced by 7% and 1% in Case 2. For the tower top pitch and yaw moment, load reductions of 7% and 3% or more are achievable compared with those under the PI control scheme. It is indicated that the proposed scheme is more effective in suppressing floating platform motion, stabilizing output power of the wind turbine system, and reducing tower loads.

It is of great importance to simultaneously stabilize output power and suppress platform motion and fatigue loads in floating offshore wind turbine control systems. In this paper, a novel composite blade pitch control scheme considering actuator fault is proposed based on an augmented linear quadratic regulator (LQR), a fuzzy proportional integral (PI) and an adaptive second-order sliding-mode observer. Collective pitch control was achieved via the fuzzy PI, while individual pitch control was based on the augmented LQR. In the case of actuator fault, an adaptive second-order sliding-mode observer was constructed to effectively eliminate the need for the upper bound of unknown fault derivatives and suppress the chattering effect. This paper conducted co-simulations based on FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) and MATLAB/Simulink to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed scheme under different environmental conditions. It is shown that platform roll was reduced by approximately 54% compared to that under PI control. For the tower fore–aft moment, load reductions of 45% or more were achievable. The proposed scheme can greatly reduce the pitch and roll of the floating platform and loads in the windward direction of the wind turbine.

It is unclear whether 2D metal dichalcogenides (TMD) alone can cause ferroptotic cell death. Here, the authors show TMD nanosheets induced ferroptosis in mammalian cell lines and in a mouse model after aspiration of TMD materials into lungs, causing ferroptotic cell death.

Subsynchronous oscillation, caused by the interaction between the rotor side converter (RSC) control of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and series-compensated transmission line, is an alleged subsynchronous control interaction (SSCI). SSCI can cause DFIGs to go offline and crowbar circuit breakdown, and then deteriorate power system stability. This paper proposes a novel adaptive super-twisting sliding mode SSCI mitigation method for series-compensated DFIG-based wind power systems. Rotor currents were constrained to track the reference values which are determined by maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and reactive power demand. Super-twisting control laws were designed to generate RSC control signals. True adaptive and non-overestimated control gains were conceived with the aid of barrier function, without need of upper bound of uncertainty derivatives. Stability proof of the studied closed-loop power system was demonstrated in detail with the help of the Lyapunov method. Time-domain simulation for 100 MW aggregated DFIG wind farm was executed on MATLAB/Simulink platform. Some comparative simulation results with conventional PI control, partial feedback linearization control, and first-order sliding mode were also obtained, which verify the validity, robustness, and superiority of the proposed control strategy.

In a wind turbine system, a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), with nonlinear and high-dimensional dynamics, is generally subjected to unbalanced grid voltage and unknown uncertainty. This paper proposes a novel adaptive-gain second-order sliding mode direct power control (AGSOSM-DPC) strategy for a wind-turbine-driven DFIG, valid for both balanced and unbalanced grid voltage. The AGSOSM-DPC control scheme is presented in detail to restrain rotor voltage chattering and deal with the scenario of unknown uncertainty upper bound. Stator current harmonics and electromagnetic torque ripples can be simultaneously restrained without phase-locked loop (PLL) and phase sequence decomposition using new active power expression. Adaptive control gains are deduced based on the Lyapunov stability method. Comparative simulations under three DPC schemes are executed on a 2-MW DFIG under both balanced and unbalanced grid voltage. The proposed strategy achieved active and reactive power regulation under a two-phase stationary reference frame for both balanced and unbalanced grid voltage. An uncertainty upper bound is not needed in advance, and the sliding mode control chattering is greatly restrained. The simulation results verify the effectiveness, robustness, and superiority of the AGSOSM-DPC strategy.

Grid-connected and islanding operations of a microgrid are often influenced by system uncertainties, such as load parameter variations and unmodeled dynamics. This paper proposes a novel adaptive higher-order sliding mode (AHOSM) control strategy to enhance system robustness and handle an unknown uncertainty upper bounds problem. Firstly, microgrid models with uncertainties are established under islanding and grid-connected modes. Then, adaptive third-order sliding mode and adaptive second-order sliding mode control schemes are respectively designed for the two modes. Microgrid models’ descriptions are divided into nominal part and uncertain part, and higher-order sliding mode (HOSM) control problems are transformed into finite time stability problems. Again, a scheduled law is proposed to increase or decrease sliding mode control gain adaptively. Real higher-order sliding modes are established, and finite time stability is proven based on the Lyapunov method. In order to achieve smooth mode transformation, an islanding mode detection algorithm is also adopted. The proposed control strategy accomplishes voltage control and current control of islanding mode and grid-connected mode. Control voltages are continuous, and uncertainty upper bounds are not required. Furthermore, adjustable control gain can further whittle control chattering. Simulation experiments verify the validity and robustness of the proposed control scheme.
