Abstract

Highlights The zeolitic imidazolate framework functionalized modified layered double hydroxide (ZIF-8@MLDH) composite membranes with superior structural stability and Li+ permeability are prepared by selectively growing ZIF-8 nanoparticles in the framework defects of the MLDH membrane. The tailor-made ZIF-8@MLDH membrane has a large Li+ permeability of up to 1.73 mol m-2 h-1 and a high Li+/Mg2+ selectivity of 31.9, which exceed most of the current 2D lamellar membranes.

The one-dimensional van der Waals (1D vdW) material fibrous red phosphorus (FRP) nanotubes are a promising direct-bandgap semiconductor with high carrier mobility and anisotropic optical responses because of low deformation potential and dangling-bond-free anisotropic interface. Abstract

The skyrocketing progress of wearable electronics has urged the development of advanced batteries that can adapt to various conditions in practical applications, such as mechanical impact, bending, cutting, or freezing. Herein, solid-state rechargeable Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) based on the poly(4,4′-oxydiphenol)-modified nanoporous carbon cathode is presented. By using an anti-freeze gelled electrolyte, the sandwich-structured flat cell exhibits stable electrochemical performance under mechanical impact and good working condition after being partially cropped. Also, the device being cut into halves can be re-connected to resume its powering function, showing a self-healable behaviour. Our temperature-dependent tests from 25 to –20 °C reveal that the operating voltage window of the solid-state ZIB can be widened at low temperatures, thus increasing the capacity despite of the reduced redox activity of the polymer electrode. Even the device capacity at –25 °C is a bit higher than that at room temperature. In addition, the ZIB delivers a flat discharge plateau around 1.15 V, higher than those of most other Zn-organic cells ever reported. To understand the charge storage mechanism, the H+ and Zn2+ co-insertion mechanism is investigated by combing theory with experiment.

Abstract

The nanoscale morphology of the photoactive layer notably impacts the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Conventional methods to tune the morphology are typically chemical approaches that adjust the properties (such as solubility and miscibility) of the active components including donor, acceptor, and/or additive. Here, we demonstrate a completely different approach by applying an external electric field (EEF) on the active layer during the wet coating. The EEF-coating method is perfectly compatible with an ambient blade coating using environmentally friendly solvents, which are essential requirements for industrial production of OSCs. A record 18.6% efficiency is achieved using the EEF coating, which is the best value for open-air, blade-coated OSCs to date. Our findings suggest broad material applicability and attribute-enhanced performance to EEF-induced fiber formation and long-range ordering of microstructures of acceptor domains. This technique offers an effective method for producing high-performance OSCs, especially suited for industry OSC production based on open-air printing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
