The importance of railway safety cannot be overemphasized; hence it requires reliable traffic monitoring systems. Widespread trackside telecommunication fiber-optic cables can be suitably deployed in the form of dense vibration sensors using Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology (DAS). Train-induced ground motion signals are recorded as continuous “footprints” in the DAS recordings. As the DAS system records huge datasets, it is thus imperative to develop optimized/stable algorithms which can be used for accurate tracking of train position, speed, and the number of trains traversing the position of the DAS system. In this study, we transform a 6-days continuous DAS data sensed by a 2-km cable into time-velocity domain using beamforming on phase-squeezed signals and automatically extract the position and velocity information from the time-beampower curve. The results are manually checked and the types of the trains are identified by counting the peaks of the signals. By reducing the array aperture and moving subarrays, the train speed-curve/motion track is obtained with acceptable computational performance. Therefore, the efficiency and robustness of our approach, to continuously collect data, can play a supplementary role with conventional periodic and time-discrete monitoring systems, for instance, magnetic beacons, in railway traffic monitoring. In addition, our method can also be used to automatically slice time windows containing train-induced signals for seismic interferometry.

Pipeline transportation is the most common means used in the petroleum industry, and its safety monitoring has attracted wide attention from the domestic and foreign researchers. The detection and alarm of intrusion events is one of the most important objects of pipeline research. Based on the optical fiber sensing technology, the pipeline can be monitored with the optical cables in the same trench to acquire various signals including intrusion events. However, no phase information is provided in the signals recorded by the traditional distributed fiber-optic vibration sensor, and thus the event cannot be located. Herein, the intrusion event signals at two different places along the 10 km buried pipeline were recorded with the distributed fiber-optic vibration sensor, and the signals were identified with the STA/LTA method. Based on the arrival time differences, the events were located through grid search, and the hazards of the event were evaluated according to the locating result. Additionally, the feasibility of the detection and alarm of intrusion event with the distributed optical fiber acoustic sensing technology was explored preliminarily by tests.

The weak interlayer refers to the filling material in shear belts or large-scale structural planes, which is usually composed of soil, fine sand and gravels. It is prone to argillization when encountering water and its mechanical strength and stiffness are generally low, which has adverse effects on the stability of underground structures. In recent years, research on reinforcement techniques for weak interlayers has been a hot topic in geotechnical field. As a new reinforcement method for structural planes, the microbial healing technique has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper, a study on the healing technique for weak interlayer based on microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) and related mechanical properties was conducted for the interlayer shear belt at Baihetan Hydropower Station in China. First, Sporosarcina pasteurii was activated in laboratory. Reinforcement of the weak interlayer was realized by utilizing calcium carbonate precipitation on the weak interlayer. Continuous monitoring of the precipitates on the weak interlayer by XRD and SEM indicated that the precipitates on the weak layer were microbially induced calcium carbonate. Its crystals were irregular fish scale-shaped cubes with size in the range of 5~20μm. With favorable crystal growth, the crystals and the particles of the weak interlayer were cemented together. Finally, the mechanical properties of the healed weak interlayer were tested and the variations of uniaxial compressive strength, shear strength and triaxial compressive strength with bacteria concentration were discussed. The test results indicated that the maximum uniaxial compressive strength, peak shear strength and triaxial compressive strength can be increased by 149%, 162% and 119%, respectively, which subsequently improve the overall strength of the shear zone or structural plane. This can provide a new idea for soft ground reinforcement in underground projects.
