Abstract The Tatun Volcano Group (TVG) is located at the northern end of Taiwan, ~ 15 km from the center of Taipei, a metropolitan area of over seven million inhabitants. A volcanic eruption by the TVG of any type or scale could cause catastrophic human and economic impacts. This paper summarizes previous geochemical, geophysical, and geochronological reports and highlights why the widely accepted age model does not comport with the latest observations. This study also reports novel 40Ar/39Ar ages for two andesite samples and one basalt sample from the TVG. A sample collected from Chihsingshan yields a robust 40Ar/39Ar age of 0.081 ± 0.005 Ma. This provides the first direct evidence of TVG volcanic activity after 0.1 Ma. Two samples yield 0.28 ± 0.02 Ma for Tatunshan and 0.159 ± 0.017 Ma for Honglushan. The younger ages refute previously proposed age models for the TVG. Along with new drone photos and LiDAR images, the age data help resolve eruptive history and advance understanding of volcanic hazards and hazard mitigation in Taiwan and surrounding areas.

Abstract Background Air pollution poses a significant threat to global public health. While broad mitigation policies exist, an understanding of the economic consequences, both in terms of health benefits and mitigation costs, remains lacking. This study systematically reviewed the existing economic implications of air pollution control strategies worldwide. Methods A predefined search strategy, without limitations on region or study design, was employed to search the PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, and CEA registry databases for studies from their inception to November 2023 using keywords such as “cost–benefit analyses”, “air pollution”, and “particulate matter”. Focus was placed on studies that specifically considered the health benefits of air pollution control strategies. The evidence was summarized by pollution control strategy and reported using principle economic evaluation measurements such as net benefits and benefit–cost ratios. Results The search yielded 104 studies that met the inclusion criteria. A total of 75, 21, and 8 studies assessed the costs and benefits of outdoor, indoor, and mixed control strategies, respectively, of which 54, 15, and 3 reported that the benefits of the control strategy exceeded the mitigation costs. Source reduction (n = 42) and end-of-pipe treatments (n = 15) were the most commonly employed pollution control methodologies. The association between particulate matter (PM) and mortality was the most widely assessed exposure-effect relationship and had the largest health gains (n = 42). A total of 32 studies employed a broader benefits framework, examining the impacts of air pollution control strategies on the environment, ecology, and society. Of these, 31 studies reported partially or entirely positive economic evidence. However, despite overwhelming evidence in support of these strategies, the studies also highlighted some policy flaws concerning equity, optimization, and uncertainty characterization. Conclusions Nearly 70% of the reviewed studies reported that the economic benefits of implementing air pollution control strategies outweighed the relative costs. This was primarily due to the improved mortality and morbidity rates associated with lowering PM levels. In addition to health benefits, air pollution control strategies were also associated with other environmental and social benefits, strengthening the economic case for implementation. However, future air pollution control strategy designs will need to address some of the existing policy limitations.

Abstract Background Cervical cancer is a prevalent malignancy and an important health concern worldwide. Recent research has highlighted the potential impact of metabolic factors, such as hyperlipidemia and diabetes, on cancer progression, increased mortality, and patient outcomes. However, insufficient data have been reported regarding their relationship with cervical cancer. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between metabolic disorders, including dyslipidemia, dysglycemia, and metabolic syndrome, and survival in patients with cervical cancer. Methods We retrospectively analyzed demographic information, clinical characteristics, and metabolic health indicators of patients with cervical cancer. Patients were categorized into groups based on specific metabolic conditions: high triglyceride, high low-density lipoprotein, high cholesterol, and diabetes groups. Additionally, the presence of metabolic syndrome and other metabolic comorbidities was recorded. The log-rank test was used to compare survival rates between different patient groups and identify associated risk factors. Survival curves generated via the Cox proportional hazards model were used to evaluate the associations between metabolic parameters and survival. Results The Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze data from 840 patients with cervical cancer between 28 and 72 years old who underwent surgery. In the global pursuit of energy conservation, reduction in consumption and emissions, as well as lightweighting, 5xxx-series aluminum alloys have emerged as a promising lightweight and high-strength material with a wide range of applications in aerospace, transportation, building structures, medical devices, and more. However, it is worth noting that 5XXX-series aluminum alloys belong to a category of non-heat-treatable reinforced aluminum alloys with limited means of enhancing their properties through heat treatment. Consequently, the development of high-performance 5XXX-series aluminum alloys poses a significant challenge. This paper provides an overview of the research progress on 5xxx-series aluminum alloys while discussing the current state of research regarding the influence of microalloying elements on their microstructure and properties. Furthermore, it elucidates the emerging trends in synergistic regulation between deformation processes and heat treatment processes for enhancing organizational refinement and improving alloy properties. Additionally, this study analyzes the reinforcement mechanism responsible for the exceptional properties exhibited by 5xxx-series aluminum alloys. Lastly, it discusses the exceptional properties exhibited by 5xxx-series alloys along with their primary areas of application. The findings presented herein can serve as a valuable reference for future advancements in advanced high-performance 5xxx-series aluminum alloys.

Abstract The tunable properties of halide perovskite/two dimensional (2D) semiconductor mixed-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures offer high flexibility for innovating optoelectronic and photonic devices. However, the general and robust growth of high-quality monocrystalline halide perovskite/2D semiconductor heterostructures with attractive optical properties has remained challenging. Here, we demonstrate a universal van der Waals heteroepitaxy strategy to synthesize a library of facet-specific single-crystalline halide perovskite/2D semiconductor (multi)heterostructures. The obtained heterostructures can be broadly tailored by selecting the coupling layer of interest, and can include perovskites varying from all-inorganic to organic-inorganic hybrid counterparts, individual transition metal dichalcogenides or 2D heterojunctions. The CsPbI2Br/WSe2 heterostructures demonstrate ultrahigh optical gain coefficient, reduced gain threshold and prolonged gain lifetime, which are attributed to the reduced energetic disorder. Accordingly, the self-organized halide perovskite/2D semiconductor heterostructure lasers show highly reproducible single-mode lasing with largely reduced lasing threshold and improved stability. Our findings provide a high-quality and versatile material platform for probing unique optoelectronic and photonic physics and developing further electrically driven on-chip lasers, nanophotonic devices and electronic-photonic integrated systems.

Abstract Background Investigating the spatial distribution of muscle activity would facilitate understanding the underlying mechanism of spasticity. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of spastic muscles during passive stretch and active contraction by high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG). Methods Fourteen spastic hemiparetic subjects and ten healthy subjects were recruited. The biceps brachii (BB) muscle activity of each subject was recorded by HD-sEMG during passive stretch at four stretch velocities (10, 60, 120, 180˚/s) and active contraction at three submaximal contraction levels (20, 50, 80%MVC). The intensity and spatial distribution of the BB activity were compared by the means of two-way analysis of variance, independent sample t-test, and paired sample t-test. Results Compared with healthy subjects, spastic hemiparetic subjects showed significantly higher intensity with velocity-dependent heterogeneous activation during passive stretch and more lateral and proximal activation distribution during active contraction. In addition, spastic hemiparetic subjects displayed almost non-overlapping activation areas during passive stretch and active contraction. The activation distribution of passive stretch was more distal when compared with the active contraction. Conclusions These alterations of the BB activity could be the consequence of deficits in the descending central control after stroke. The complementary spatial distribution of spastic BB activity reflected their opposite motor units (MUs) recruitment patterns between passive stretch and active contraction. This HD-sEMG study provides new neurophysiological evidence for the spatial relationship of spastic BB activity between passive stretch and active contraction, advancing our knowledge on the mechanism of spasticity. Sediment accretion (burial) and nutrient enrichment may exert a synergistic influence on the growth and distribution of macrophytes in floodplain wetlands; however, this phenomenon has rarely been examined. In this study, we investigated the effects of sediment accretion and nutrient enrichment on the growth and vegetative propagation of Phalaris arundinacea within a Carex thunbergii stand (one P. arundinacea ramet within 25 C. thunbergii ramets) using a factorial sediment burial (0, 3, and 6 cm) and nutrient addition (low, medium, and high) experimental design. High sediment burial (6 cm) without nutrient addition decreased the aboveground and total biomass of C. thunbergii but did not affect P. arundinacea, indicating that P. arundinacea is more tolerant to sediment burial than C. thunbergii. Moderate sediment burial (3 cm) with nutrient addition enhanced the aboveground and total biomass of P. arundinacea but did not affect C. thunbergii, indicating that P. arundinacea may gain a growth advantage over C. thunbergii under moderate sedimentation. High sediment burial with nutrient addition increased the number of rhizomes and ramets produced by P. arundinacea but did not affect C. thunbergii, indicating that the relative abundance of P. arundinacea may increase within the Carex community under high sedimentation conditions. Based on these results, it can be concluded that an increased sedimentation rate facilitates the invasion of P. arundinacea into Carex grasslands, and this invasion is further enhanced by nutrient enrichment. Therefore, management measures should be taken to reduce the sediment load and nutrient input to prevent Carex grasslands invasion by P. arundinacea and maintain the ecological function of floodplain wetlands.

Background: The climate change scenario has witnessed an increase in extreme temperature events (ETEs), including heat waves and cold spells, and a heightened occurrence of compounding with fine particulate matter (PM2.5). However, the impact of this phenomenon on the sensitivity to thyroid hormones (THs) in humans is unclear, especially in a group as specific as schizophrenia. Methods: A longitudinal study was constructed using longitudinal measurements of thyroid function in schizophrenia in the Anhui Mental Health Center. The latent growth mixture model was applied to assess the optimal trajectory of change in impaired THs sensitivity. We then used logistic regression to explore associations between heat waves, cold spells, and PM2.5 with impaired THs sensitivity trajectories in the total population and different gender and age subgroups. Furthermore, the effect of the frequency, intensity, and duration of ETEs in the above associations was explored, as well as an assessment of the interaction between ETEs and PM2.5. Results: Among 931 participants, we identified two classifications of trajectories of impaired THs sensitivity: “Low-stable” (n = 836, 89.80 %) and “Rise-slight down” (n = 95, 10.20 %). Logistic regression showed significant associations between each additional day of heat waves (≥3 days with temperature thresholds above the 95th percentile) and cold spells (≥3 days with temperature thresholds below the 5th percentile) and “Rise-slight down” trajectory, with odds ratios (95 % confidence intervals) of 1.06 (1.02, 1.10) and 1.19 (1.14, 1.24), respectively, and the strength of this association increased with the intensity and duration of ETEs. Subgroup analyses indicated that the association was more pronounced in males and the age group above 40 years. Furthermore, PM2.5 was found to interact with heat waves, with high concentrations exacerbating the effects of heat waves. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that mitigating both ETEs and PM2.5 exposures may bring health co-benefits in preventing thyroid impairment in schizophrenia.

To characterize the chromosomes of the four species of Polygonatum Miller, 1754, used in traditional Chinese medicine, P. cyrtonema Hua, 1892, P. kingianum Collett et Hemsley, 1890, P. odoratum (Miller, 1768) Druce, 1906, and P. sibiricum Redouté, 1811, and have an insight into the karyotype variation of the genus Polygonatum, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with 5S and 45S rDNA oligonucleotide probes was applied to analyze the karyotypes of 9 populations of the four species. Detailed molecular cytogenetic karyotypes of the 9 populations were established for the first time using the dataset of chromosome measurements and FISH signals of 5S and 45S rDNA. Four karyotype asymmetry indices, CVCI, CVCL, MCA and Stebbins’ category, were measured to elucidate the asymmetry of the karyotypes and karyological relationships among species. Comparison of their karyotypes revealed distinct variations in the karyotypic parameters and rDNA patterns among and within species. The basic chromosome numbers detected were x = 9, 11 and 13 for P. cyrtonema, x = 15 for P. kingianum, x = 10 and 11 for P. odoratum, and x = 12 for P. sibiricum. The original basic chromosome numbers of the four species were inferred on the basis of the data of this study and previous reports. All the 9 karyotypes were of moderate asymmetry and composed of metacentric, submetacentric and subtelocentric chromosomes or consisted of two of these types of chromosomes. Seven populations have one locus of 5S rDNA and two loci of 45S rDNA, and two populations added one 5S or 45S locus. The karyological relationships among the four species revealed by comparison of rDNA patterns and PCoA based on x, 2n, TCL, CVCI, MCA and CVCL were basically accordant with the phylogenetic relationships revealed by molecular phylogenetic studies. The mechanisms of both intra- and inter-specific dysploidy in Polygonatum were discussed based on the data of this study and literature.

ABSTRACT Arthropods harbor complex microbiota that play a pivotal role in host fitness. While multiple factors, like host species and diet, shape microbiota in arthropods, their impact on community assembly in wild insects remains largely unknown. In this study, we surveyed bacterial and fungal community assembly in nine sympatric wild insect species that share a common citrus fruit diet. Source tracking analysis suggested that these insects acquire some bacteria and fungi from the citrus fruit with varying degrees. Although sharing a common diet led to microbiota convergence, the diversity, composition, and network of both bacterial and fungal communities varied significantly among surveyed insect groups. Null model analysis indicated that stochastic processes, particularly dispersal limitation and drift, are primary drivers of structuring insect bacterial and fungal communities. Importantly, the influence of each community assembly process varied strongly depending on the host species. Thus, we proposed a speculative view that the host specificity of the microbiome and mycobiome assembly is widespread in wild insects despite sharing the same regional species pool. Overall, this research solidifies the importance of host species in shaping microbiomes and mycobiomes, providing novel insights into their assembly mechanisms in wild insects.IMPORTANCESince the microbiome has been shown to impact insect fitness, a mechanistic understanding of community assembly has potentially significant applications but remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we investigate bacterial and fungal community assembly in nine sympatric wild insect species that share a common diet. The main findings indicate that stochastic processes drive the divergence of microbiomes and mycobiomes in nine sympatric wild insect species. These findings offer novel insights into the assembly mechanisms of microbiomes and mycobiomes in wild insects.

Compliant physical human-robot interaction (pHRI), as well as the accuracy and robustness of trajectory tracking, are crucial for rehabilitation robots. In this paper, a new sitting/lying lower limb rehabilitation robot, SUT-SLLRR, has been designed for patients with lower extremity motor dysfunction. A dynamic movement primitives modulation-based compliance control strategy (DMPM-CCS) has been proposed for the SUT-SLLRR. The high-level trajectory planner consists of the trajectory generator based on dynamic movement primitives (DMPs), acceleration layer modulation generator, and velocity layer modulation generator, which can reshape the reference trajectory to generate desired trajectory within a constrained joint space through pHRI. Besides, the linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC) is adopted as the low-level position controller to ensure that each joint can accurately and robustness track the desired trajectory under internal and external disturbances. Simulation and experimental results indicate that the proposed strategy can provide the compliant pHRI within the constrained joint space and ensure the accuracy and robustness of trajectory tracking.

Modeling the muscle response to functional electrical stimulation (FES) is an important step during model-based FES control system design. The Hammerstein structure is widely used in simulating this nonlinear biomechanical response. However, a fixed relationship cannot cope well with the time-varying property of muscles and muscle fatigue. In this paper, we proposed an adaptive Hammerstein model to predict ankle joint torque induced by electrical stimulation, which used variable forgetting factor recursive least squares (VFFRLS) method to update the model parameters. To validate the proposed model, ten healthy individuals were recruited for short-duration FES experiments, ten for long-duration FES experiments, and three stroke patients for both. The isometric ankle dorsiflexion torque induced by FES was measured, and then the test performance of the fixed-parameter Hammerstein model, the adaptive Hammerstein model based on fixed forgetting factor recursive least squares (FFFRLS) and the adaptive Hammerstein model based on VFFRLS was compared. The goodness of fit, root mean square error, peak error and success rate were applied to evaluate the accuracy and stability of the model. The results indicate a significant improvement in both the accuracy and stability of the proposed adaptive model compared to the fixed-parameter model and the adaptive model based on FFFRLS. The proposed adaptive model enhances the ability of the model to cope with muscle changes.

Adaptive compliance control is critical for rehabilitation robots to cope with the varying rehabilitation needs and enhance training safety. This article presents a trajectory deformation-based multi-modal adaptive compliance control strategy (TD-MACCS) for a wearable lower limb rehabilitation robot (WLLRR), which includes a high-level trajectory planner and a low-level position controller. Dynamic motion primitives (DMPs) and a trajectory deformation algorithm (TDA) are integrated into the high-level trajectory planner, generating multi-joint synchronized desired trajectories through physical human-robot interaction (pHRI). In particular, the amplitude modulation factor of DMPs and the deformation factor of TDA are adapted by a multi-modal adaptive regulator, achieving smooth switching of human-dominant mode, robot-dominant mode, and soft-stop mode. Besides, a linear active disturbance rejection controller is designed as the low-level position controller. Four healthy participants and two stroke survivors are recruited to conduct robot-assisted walking experiments using the TD-MACCS. The results show that the TD-MACCS can smoothly switch three control modes while guaranteeing trajectory tracking accuracy. Moreover, we find that appropriately increasing the upper bound of the deformation factor can enhance the average walking speed (AWS) and root mean square of trajectory deviation (RMSTD).

Abstract Aims HNF1B syndrome is caused by defects in the hepatocyte nuclear factor 1B (HNF1B) gene, which leads to maturity‐onset diabetes of the young type 5 and congenital organ malformations. This study aimed to identify a gene defect in a patient presenting with diabetes and severe diarrhea, while also analyzing the prevalence of hypomagnesemia and its correlation with the HNF1B genotype. Materials and Methods Whole exome sequencing was used to identify responsible point mutations and small indels in the proband and their family members. Multiplex ligation‐dependent probe amplification was carried out to identify HNF1B deletions. Furthermore, an analysis of published data on 539 cumulative HNF1B cases, from 29 literature sources, was carried out to determine the correlation between the HNF1B genotype and the phenotype of serum magnesium status. Results Using multiplex ligation‐dependent probe amplification, we identified a de novo heterozygous HNF1B deletion in the patient, who showed dorsal pancreas agenesis and multiple kidney cysts, as detected by magnetic resonance imaging. Magnesium supplementation effectively alleviated the symptoms of diarrhea. Hypomagnesemia was highly prevalent in 192 out of 354 (54.2%) patients with HNF1B syndrome. Compared with patients with intragenic mutations, those with HNF1B deletions were more likely to suffer from hypomagnesemia, with an odds ratio of 3.1 (95% confidence interval 1.8–5.4). Conclusions Hypomagnesemia is highly prevalent in individuals with HNF1B syndrome, and those with HNF1B deletion are more susceptible to developing hypomagnesemia compared with those with intragenic mutations. The genotype–phenotype associations in HNF1B syndrome have significant implications for endocrinologists in terms of genotype detection, treatment decisions and prognosis assessment.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Different types of diabetes show distinct genetic characteristics, but the specific genetic susceptibility factors remain unclear. Our study aimed to explore the associations between the ribosomal protein S26 (RPS26) gene rs1131017 polymorphisms and susceptibility to type 1 diabetes mellitus, latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) and type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Chinese Han population, and their correlations with clinical features. Materials and Methods Genotyping of the rs1131017 variant was carried out for 1,006 type 1 diabetes mellitus patients, 210 LADA patients, 642 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and 2,099 control individuals. Abstract This study evaluated the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and food effects (FE) of SC0062, a highly active endothelin‐A (ETA) receptor antagonist, in healthy subjects. The primary objectives of this first‐in‐human phase I study, comprised of single‐ascending‐dose, multiple‐ascending‐dose, and FE parts, were to characterize the safety and tolerability of SC0062, and FE. The secondary objectives were to determine the PK behavior of SC0062 and its major active metabolite M18, whereas exploratory objectives focused on PD effects, principally effects on endothelin‐1 (ET‐1) and total bile acids (TBA). Single doses of 10 to 100 mg and multiple daily doses of 20 and 50 mg for 6 days were well tolerated. SC0062 was rapidly absorbed and plasma exposure of SC0062 and M18 increased disproportionately with dose, achieving steady state by day 3, with accumulation ratios of 1.22 and 1.89 on day 6 for SC0062 and M18, respectively. The geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) terminal elimination half‐life (t1/2) values of SC0062 and M18 were 7.25 (1.70) h and 13.73 (1.32) h, respectively. Plasma ET‐1 concentrations were dose‐proportional, whereas plasma TBA concentrations behaved erratically. Following a single 50 mg dose of SC0062 after a high‐fat meal, Cmax values for SC0062 and M18 increased by 41% and 32%, respectively, and median Tmax values for SC0062 were 3 h longer than fasting values; exposure was unaffected. These favorable safety, PK, and PD results provide a foundation for further studies of SC0062 in pulmonary arterial hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and other relevant indications.

Al-Mg alloys are widely used as important engineering structural materials in aerospace engineering, transportation systems, and structural constructions due to their low density, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, welding capability, fatigue strength, and cost-effectiveness. However, the conventional Al-Mg alloys can no longer fully satisfy the demands of practical production due to difficulties caused by many defects. The high strength of Al-Mg alloys as non-heat treatment precipitation-strengthened alloys is achieved primarily by solid solution strengthening along with work hardening rather than precipitation strengthening. Therefore, severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques can be often used to produce ultrafine-grained structures to fabricate ultra-high strength aluminum alloys. However, this approach often achieves the strengthening of material at the cost of reduced ductility. This paper comprehensively summarizes the various approaches of ultrafine/nanocrystalline materials for enhancing their plasticity, elaborates on the creation of a bimodal microstructure within the alloy, and discusses the formation of a nanotwin microstructure within the alloy and the incorporation of dispersed nanoparticles. The mechanisms underlying both the strengthening and toughening during large plastic deformation in aluminum alloys are summarized, and the future research direction of high-performance ultrafine crystalline and nanocrystalline Al-Mg aluminum alloys is prospected.

Intermuscular coupling reflects the corticospinal interaction associated with the control of muscles. Nevertheless, the deterioration of intermuscular coupling caused by stroke has not received much attention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of myoelectric-controlled interface (MCI) dimensionality on the intermuscular coupling after stroke. In total, ten age-matched controls and eight stroke patients were recruited and executed elbow tracking tasks within 1D or 2D MCI. Movement performance was quantified using the root mean square error (RMSE). Wavelet coherence was used to analyze the intermuscular coupling in alpha band (8–12 Hz) and beta band (15–35 Hz). The results found that smaller RMSE of antagonist muscles was observed in both groups within 2D MCI compared to 1D MCI. The alpha-band wavelet coherence was significantly lower in the patients compared to the controls during elbow extension. Furthermore, a decreased alpha-band and beta-band wavelet coherence was observed in the controls and stroke patients, as the dimensionality of MCI increased. These results may suggest that stroke-related neural impairments deteriorate the motor performance and intermuscular coordination pattern, and, further, that MCI holds promise as a novel effective tool for rehabilitation through the direct modulation of muscle activation pattern.

Abstract Background Phosphonates are the main components in the global phosphorus redox cycle. Little is known about phosphonate metabolism in freshwater ecosystems, although rapid consumption of phosphonates has been observed frequently. Cyanobacteria are often the dominant primary producers in freshwaters; yet, only a few strains of cyanobacteria encode phosphonate-degrading (C-P lyase) gene clusters. The phycosphere is defined as the microenvironment in which extensive phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria interactions occur. It has been demonstrated that phytoplankton may recruit phycospheric bacteria based on their own needs. Therefore, the establishment of a phycospheric community rich in phosphonate-degrading-bacteria likely facilitates cyanobacterial proliferation, especially in waters with scarce phosphorus. We characterized the distribution of heterotrophic phosphonate-degrading bacteria in field Microcystis bloom samples and in laboratory cyanobacteria “phycospheres” by qPCR and metagenomic analyses. The role of phosphonate-degrading phycospheric bacteria in cyanobacterial proliferation was determined through coculturing of heterotrophic bacteria with an axenic Microcystis aeruginosa strain and by metatranscriptomic analysis using field Microcystis aggregate samples. Results Abundant bacteria that carry C-P lyase clusters were identified in plankton samples from freshwater Lakes Dianchi and Taihu during Microcystis bloom periods. Metagenomic analysis of 162 non-axenic laboratory strains of cyanobacteria (consortia cultures containing heterotrophic bacteria) showed that 20% (128/647) of high-quality bins from eighty of these consortia encode intact C-P lyase clusters, with an abundance ranging up to nearly 13%. Phycospheric bacterial phosphonate catabolism genes were expressed continually across bloom seasons, as demonstrated through metatranscriptomic analysis using sixteen field Microcystis aggregate samples. Coculturing experiments revealed that although Microcystis cultures did not catabolize methylphosphonate when axenic, they demonstrated sustained growth when cocultured with phosphonate-utilizing phycospheric bacteria in medium containing methylphosphonate as the sole source of phosphorus. Conclusions The recruitment of heterotrophic phosphonate-degrading phycospheric bacteria by cyanobacteria is a hedge against phosphorus scarcity by facilitating phosphonate availability. Cyanobacterial consortia are likely primary contributors to aquatic phosphonate mineralization, thereby facilitating sustained cyanobacterial growth, and even bloom maintenance, in phosphate-deficient waters. Background: In the era characterized by global environmental and climatic changes, understanding the effects of PM2.5 components and heatwaves on schizophrenia (SCZ) is essential for implementing environmental interventions at the population level. However, research in this area remains limited, which highlights the need for further research and effort. We aim to assess the association between exposure to PM2.5 components and hospitalizations for SCZ under different heatwave characteristics. Methods: We conducted a 16 municipalities-wide, individual exposure-based, time-stratified, case-crossover study from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2020, encompassing 160736 hospitalizations in Anhui Province, China. Daily concentrations of PM2.5 components were obtained from the Tracking Air Pollution in China dataset. Conditional logistic regression models were used to investigate the association between PM2.5 components and hospitalizations. Additionally, restricted cubic spline models were used to identify protective thresholds of residential environment in response to environmental and climate change. Results: Our findings indicate a positive correlation between PM2.5 and its components and hospitalizations. Significantly, a 1 μg/m3 increase in black carbon (BC) was associated with the highest risk, at 1.58% (95%CI: 0.95–2.25). Exposure to heatwaves synergistically enhanced the impact of PM2.5 components on hospitalization risks, and the interaction varied with the intensity and duration of heatwaves. Under the 99th percentile heatwave events, the impact of PM2.5 and its components on hospitalizations was most pronounced, which were PM2.5 (2–4d: 4.59%, 5.09%, and 5.09%), sulfate (2–4d: 21.73%, 23.23%, and 25.25%), nitrate (2–4d: 17.51%, 16.93%, and 20.31%), ammonium (2–4d: 27.49%, 31.03%, and 32.41%), organic matter (2–4d: 32.07%, 25.42%, and 24.48%), and BC (2–4d: 259.36%, 288.21%, and 152.52%), respectively. Encouragingly, a protective effect was observed when green and blue spaces comprised more than 17.6% of the residential environment. Discussion: PM2.5 components and heatwave exposure were positively associated with an increased risk of hospitalizations, although green and blue spaces provided a mitigating effect.

The contamination of arable land with heavy metals, such as Cd, is a serious concern worldwide. Intercropping with Cd accumulators can be used for efficient safe crop production and phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil. However, the effect of intercropping on Cd uptake by main crops and accumulators varies among plant combinations. Rhizosphere interaction may mediate Cd uptake by intercropped plants, but the mechanism is unclear. Thus, in the present study, we aimed to examine the effect of rhizosphere interaction on Cd uptake by intercropping rice (Oryza sativa L.) with mugwort (Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant.) in Cd-contaminated paddy soil. We grew O. sativa and A. argyi in pots designed to allow different levels of interaction: complete root interaction (no barrier), partial root interaction (nylon mesh barrier), and no root interaction (plastic film barrier). Our results indicated that both complete and partial root interaction increased the shoot and root mass of A. argyi, but did not decrease the shoot, root, and grain mass of O. sativa. Interspecific root interaction significantly increased the Cd content in the shoots, roots, and grains of O. sativa and the shoots of A. argyi. Increased content of total organic acids in the rhizosphere, which increased the content of available Cd, was a possible mechanism of increased Cd uptake in both plants under interspecific root interaction. Our findings demonstrate that an intercropping system can extract more Cd from contaminated soil than a monocropping system of either A. argyi or O. sativa. However, the intercropping system did not facilitate safe crop production because it substantially increased grain Cd content in O. sativa.

Purpose: HSK16149 is a novel, potent gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) analog for the treatment of neuropathic pain. This study aimed to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of HSK16149 after single and multiple doses in healthy Chinese subjects.Methods: The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study comprised two parts: SAD (single ascending-dose study) and MAD (multiple ascending-dose study). A total of 122 healthy subjects were enrolled in this study. HSK16149 capsule or placebo was administered as the protocol required. The safety of the drug was evaluated through clinical examinations and adverse events. Blood and urine samples were collected at the designated time intervals for pharmacokinetic analysis.Results: Subjects were generally well tolerated after HSK16149 administration and the most common treatment-emergent adverse event (TEAEs) was dizziness, which was expected based on the mechanism of action of HSK16149. In SAD, AUC and Cmax were shown to have a dose-proportional relationship in the dose range of 5-120 mg. The t1/2 of HSK16149 is 3.7-6.4 h. In MAD, after a single and multiple administration of 15-80 mg, AUC and Cmax are proportional to the increased dose of HSK16149, and the accumulative ratios of AUC and Cmax at steady-state were 1.05–1.44 and 1.07–1.36, respectively, indicating that HSK16149 only accumulated slightly after repeated administration.Conclusion: HSK16149 was well tolerated in healthy Chinese subjects. Abstract Background It is proposed that the development of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis (PNAC) was significantly associated with preterm birth, low birth weight, infection, etc.; however, the etiology and pathogenesis of PNAC are not fully understood. Most of the studies examining PNAC-associated risk factors were single-center studies with relatively small sample sizes. Objective To analyze the risk factors associated with PNAC in preterm infants in China. Methods This is a retrospective multicenter observational study. Clinical data on the effect of multiple oil-fat emulsions (soybean oil-medium chain triglycerides-olive oil-fish oil, SMOF) in preterm infants were collected from a prospective multicenter randomized controlled study. A secondary analysis was performed in which preterm infants were divided into the PNAC group and the non-PNAC group based on the PNAC status. Results A total of 465 cases very preterm infants or very low birth weight infants were included in the study in which 81 cases were assigned to the PNAC group and 384 cases were assigned to the non-PNAC group. Abstract Background The Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua rhizomes (also known as Rhizoma Polygonati, RP) are consumed for their health benefits. The main source of the RP is wild P. cyrtonema populations in the Hunan province of China. However, the soil Cadmium (Cd) content in Huanan is increasing, thus increasing the risks of Cd accumulation in RP which may end up in the human food chain. To understand the mechanism of Cd accumulation and resistance in P. cyrtonema, we subjected P. cyrtonema plants to four levels of Cd stress [(D2) 1, (D3) 2, (D4) 4, and (D5) 8 mg/kg)] compared to (D1) 0.5 mg/kg. Results The increase in soil Cd content up to 4 mg/kg resulted in a significant increase in tissue (root hair, rhizome, stem, and leaf) Cd content. The increase in Cd concentration variably affected the antioxidant enzyme activities. We could identify 14,171 and 12,115 protein groups and peptides, respectively. There were 193, 227, 260, and 163 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in D2, D3, D4, and D5, respectively, compared to D1. The number of downregulated DEPs increased with an increase in Cd content up to 4 mg/kg. These downregulated proteins belonged to sugar biosynthesis, amino acid biosynthesis-related pathways, and secondary metabolism-related pathways. Our results indicate that Cd stress increases ROS generation, against which, different ROS scavenging proteins are upregulated in P. cyrtonema. Moreover, Cd stress affected the expression of lipid transport and assembly, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, sugar biosynthesis, and ATP generation. Conclusion These results suggest that an increase in soil Cd content may end up in Huangjing. Cadmium stress initiates expression changes in multiple pathways related to energy metabolism, sugar biosynthesis, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. The proteins involved in these pathways are potential candidates for manipulation and development of Cd stress-tolerant genotypes.

Background: Epidemiological studies show that outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) is linked to metabolic hazards, but its association with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association of outdoor ALAN with MetS in middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Methods: From 2017–2020, we conducted a cross-sectional study in a total of 109,452 participants living in ten cities of eastern China. MetS was defined by fasting blood glucose (FG), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), blood pressure (BP), and waist circumference (WC). In 2021, we followed up 4395 participants without MetS at the baseline. Each participant's five-year average exposure to outdoor ALAN, as well as their exposure to green space type, were measured through matching to their address. Generalized linear models were used to assess the associations of outdoor ALAN with MetS. Stratified analyses were performed by sex, age, region, physical activity, and exposure to green space. Results: In the cross-sectional study, compared to the first quantile (Q1) of outdoor ALAN exposure, the odds ratios (ORs) of MetS were 1.156 [95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.111–1.203] and 1.073 (95 %CI: 1.021–1.128) respectively in the third and fourth quantiles (Q3, Q4) of outdoor ALAN exposure. The follow-up study found that, compared to the first quantile (Q1) of outdoor ALAN exposure, the OR of MetS in Q4 of ALAN exposure was 1.204 (95 %CI: 1.019–1.422). Adverse associations of ALAN with MetS components, including high FG, high TG, and obesity, were also found. Greater associations of ALAN with MetS were found in males, the elderly, urban residents, those with low frequency of physical activity, and those living in areas with low levels of grass cover and tree cover. Conclusions: Outdoor ALAN exposure is associated with an increased MetS risk, especially in males, the elderly, urban residents, those lacking physical activity, and those living in lower levels of grass cover and tree cover.

E-commerce platforms are evolving rapidly, and consumers have adapted to shop online more effectively by utilizing product images on shopping websites. In the case of apparel, consumers pay attention not only to the information about practical attributes but also to the information about style attributes. In this study, to specifically analyze the respective style recognition capabilities of the depth feature extractor for studying different clothing styles, an empirical investigation was conducted on four commonly utilized networks: AlexNet, InceptionV3, ResNet50, and VGG16. To complete style classification, we propose the IMF model, which integrates shallow neural networks subsequent to feature engineering to incorporate the benefits of basic features and depth features. This process reinforces the basic features through secondary extraction and merges them with depth features to generate style features, ultimately accomplishing the objective of clothing style classification. Furthermore, a DeepCluster based unsupervised learning approach is used in this study as a comparison. Its classification outcomes are compared with those of the IMF model to authenticate the efficacy of IMF model in this study.

Many patients experience motor and sensory impairments after stroke, leading to gait disturbances. Analysis of muscle modulation mode during walking can provide evidence for neurological changes after stroke, while how stroke affects individual muscle activity and muscular coordination in certain gait sub-phases remains unclear. The purpose of the present study is to comprehensively investigate phase-dependent ankle muscle activity and intermuscular coupling patterns in post-stroke patients. In this experiment, 10 post-stroke patients, 10 young healthy subjects and 10 elderly healthy subjects were recruited. All subjects were asked to walk at their preferred speeds on the ground, and surface electromyography (sEMG) and marker trajectory data were collected simultaneously. The gait cycle of each subject was divided into four substages according to the labeled trajectory data. On this basis, fuzzy approximate entropy (fApEn) was used to analyze the complexity of ankle muscle activity during walking. And the transfer entropy (TE) was applied to reflect directed information transmission between ankle muscles. Results found that complexity of ankle muscles activities in patients after stroke showed similar trends to that in healthy subjects. Different from healthy subjects, the complexity of ankle muscle activity in patients with stroke tends to increase in most of the gait sub-phases. While TE values between the ankle muscles in patients with stroke tend to decrease throughout the gait cycle, especially in the second double support stage. Compared with age-matched healthy subjects, patients recruit more motor units throughout their gait while increasing muscle coupling to achieve gait function. The combined application of fApEn and TE provide a more comprehensive understanding of phase-dependent muscle modulation mechanisms in post-stroke patients.

Introduction: Gait, as a fundamental human movement, necessitates the coordination of muscles across swing and stance phases. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the tibialis anterior (TA) has been widely applied to foot drop correction for patients with post-stroke during the swing phase. Although the gastrocnemius (GAS) during the stance phase is also affected, the Functional electrical stimulation of the gastrocnemius received less attention.Methods: To address this limitation, a timing- and intensity-adaptive Functional electrical stimulation control strategy was developed for both the TA and GAS. Each channel incorporates a speed-adaptive (SA) module to control stimulation timing and an iterative learning control (ILC) module to regulate the stimulation intensity. These modules rely on real-time kinematic or kinetic data during the swing or stance phase, respectively. The orthotic effects of the system were evaluated on eight patients with post-stroke foot drop. Gait kinematics and kinetics were assessed under three conditions: no stimulation (NS), Functional electrical stimulation to the ankle dorsiflexor tibialis anterior (SA-ILC DS) and FES to the tibialis anterior and the ankle plantarflexor gastrocnemius (SA-ILC DPS).Results: The ankle plantarflexion angle, the knee flexion angle, and the anterior ground reaction force (AGRF) in the SA-ILC DPS condition were significantly larger than those in the NS and SA-ILC DS conditions (p < 0.05). The maximum dorsiflexion angle during the swing phase in the SA-ILC DPS condition was similar to that in the SA-ILC DS condition, with both being significantly larger than the angle observed in the NS condition (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the angle error and force error relative to the set targets were minimized in the SA-ILC DPS condition.Discussion: The observed improvements can be ascribed to the appropriate stimulation timing and intensity provided by the SA-ILC DPS strategy. This study demonstrates that the hybrid and adaptive control strategy of functional electrical stimulation system offers a significant orthotic effect, and has considerable potential for future clinical application.

Introduction: Bidirectional transmission of information is needed to realize a closed-loop human-machine interaction (HMI), where electrophysiological signals are recorded for man-machine control and electrical stimulations are used for machine-man feedback. As a neural interface (NI) connecting man and machine, electrodes play an important role in HMI and their characteristics are critical for information transmission.Methods: In this work, we fabricated a kind of microneedle array electrodes (MAEs) by using a magnetization-induced self-assembly method, where microneedles with a length of 500–600 μm and a tip diameter of ∼20 μm were constructed on flexible substrates. Part of the needle length could penetrate through the subjects’ stratum corneum and reach the epidermis, but not touch the dermis, establishing a safe and direct communication pathway between external electrical circuit and internal peripheral nervous system.Results: The MAEs showed significantly lower and more stable electrode-skin interface impedance than the metal-based flat array electrodes (FAEs) in various testing scenarios, demonstrating their promising impedance characteristics. With the stable microneedle structure, MAEs exhibited an average SNR of EMG that is more than 30% higher than FAEs, and a motion-intention classification accuracy that is 10% higher than FAEs. The successful sensation evoking demonstrated the feasibility of the MAE-based electrical stimulation for sensory feedback, where a variety of natural and intuitive feelings were generated in the subjects and thereafter objectively verified through EEG analysis.Discussion: This work confirms the application potential of MAEs working as an effective NI, in both electrophysiological recording and electrical stimulation, which may provide a technique support for the development of HMI.

Abstract HSK16149 is a novel, potent gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA) analog for the treatment of neuropathic pain. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of a high‐fat and high‐calorie meal on the pharmacokinetics of HSK16149 in healthy Chinese subjects. An open‐label, two‐period crossover design was applied in this study. Twenty‐six subjects were enrolled and were randomly divided into two groups: a fasted‐fed group and a fed‐fasted group, with 13 subjects in each group. Subjects took a single oral dose of 45 mg of HSK16149 under fasted or fed conditions on Day 1 and Day 4. A series of blood samples were collected for PK analysis. Safety was evaluated throughout the study by physical examinations, clinical laboratory tests, 12‐lead ECGs, vital signs, and adverse events (AEs). The parameters AUC0‐∞, AUC0‐t, and Cmax of HSK16149 were compared to assess the bioequivalence of HSK16149 under fasted and fed conditions. The geometric mean ratios (GMRs) and their 90% confidence intervals (CIs) of AUC0‐t and AUC0‐∞ under the fed condition compared with the fasted condition were 95.84% (91.94–99.90%) and 95.79% (91.89–99.84%), respectively, which were all within the bioequivalent interval (80.00–125.00%). The GMR (90% CI) of Cmax under the fed condition compared with the fasted condition was 66.04% (59.45–73.36%), which was not within the bioequivalent range (80.00–125.00%). All adverse events were transient and resolved. This study demonstrated that HSK16149 can be administered with or without food.

To produce food-grade ice nucleators, a 3.77 kb ice nucleation gene (iceE) isolated from Pantoea agglomerans (Erwinia herbicola) was introduced into the Gram-positive microorganism Bacillus amyloliquefaciens for the first time. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicated that recombined strain B9-INP was an effective ice nucleator for controlling the supercooling point of distilled water at low concentrations. In the presence of B9-INP cells, model food systems, including sucrose solution and sodium chloride solution, different pH solutions froze at a relatively high subzero temperature, thus increasing the supercooling point by 5.8~16.7 °C. Moreover, B9-INP also facilitated model and real food systems to freeze at −6 °C. This recombinant strain not only improved the freezing temperature of food systems but also shortened the total freezing time, thus saving energy and reducing consumption. The results suggest that B9-INP has great application potential in the frozen food industry.

The majority of electric arc injury wounds are deep second-degree or mixed depth wounds. Traditional treatment methods in these types of injuries have many shortcomings. This randomized prospective study evaluated the use of a minimally invasive hydrosurgery system for precise debridement, followed by the application of autologous skin cell suspension prepared utilizing the RECELL® Autologous Cell Harvesting Device (AVITA Medical). Compared with traditional methods, the cases treated with hydrosurgical debridement and autologous skin cell suspension had improved healing times and scar appearance after healing. The combination of these two treatment modalities appears to restore function and appearance for electric arc injuries.

Continuous mode adaptation is very important and useful to satisfy the different user rehabilitation needs and improve human–robot interaction (HRI) performance for rehabilitation robots. Hence, we propose a reinforcement-learning-based optimal admittance control (RLOAC) strategy for a cable-driven rehabilitation robot (CDRR), which can realize continuous mode adaptation between passive and active working mode. To obviate the requirement of the knowledge of human and robot dynamics model, a reinforcement learning algorithm was employed to obtain the optimal admittance parameters by minimizing a cost function composed of trajectory error and human voluntary force. Secondly, the contribution weights of the cost function were modulated according to the human voluntary force, which enabled the CDRR to achieve continuous mode adaptation between passive and active working mode. Finally, simulation and experiments were conducted with 10 subjects to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of the RLOAC strategy. The experimental results indicated that the desired performances could be obtained; further, the tracking error and energy per unit distance of the RLOAC strategy were notably lower than those of the traditional admittance control method. The RLOAC strategy is effective in improving the tracking accuracy and robot compliance. Based on its performance, we believe that the proposed RLOAC strategy has potential for use in rehabilitation robots.

IntroductionOur present study set out to investigate the instant state of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in healthy subjects before and after placement in the -12°head-down tilt (HDT) position in order to explore the mechanism behind the low-dissipation optimization state of the PFC.Methods40 young, right-handed healthy subjects (male: female = 20: 20) were enrolled in this study. Three resting state positions, 0°initial position, -12°HDT position, and 0°rest position were sequentially tested, each for 10 minutes. A continuous-wave functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) instrument was used to assess the resting state hemodynamic data of the PFC. After preprocessing the hemodynamics data, we evaluated changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) level and beta values of PFC. The subjective visual analogue scale (VAS) was applied before and after the experiment. The presence of sleep changes or adverse reactions were also recorded.ResultsPairwise comparisons of the concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (HbO), deoxyhemoglobin (HbR), and hemoglobin (HbT) revealed significant differences in the aforementioned positions. Specifically, the average rsFC of PFC showed a gradual increase throughout the whole process. In addition, based on graph theory, the topological properties of brain network, such as small-world network and nodal degree centrality were analyzed. The results show that global efficiency and small-world sigma (σ) value were differences between 0°initial and 0°rest.DiscussionIn this study, placement in the -12°HDT had a significant effect on PFC function, mainly manifested as self-inhibition, decreased concentration of HbO in the PFC, and improved rsFC, which may provide ideas to the understanding and explanation of neurological diseases.
