Despite the growing interest in incorporating textual glosses into second language (L2) reading in hypermedia and paper media, no agreements have been reached as to whether and what extent a textual gloss facilitates L2 learners' vocabulary acquisition in hypermedia and paper media. The present study meta-analysed the overall effects of textual glosses and different glossing types (i.e. language, location, and mode) on L2 vocabulary acquisition, as well as the moderation effects on the variability of L2 vocabulary acquisition effect sizes. Based on a comprehensive search, 20 studies involving 2,291 participants that have quantitatively documented the changes of L2 vocabulary gains through a pre-and-post textual glosses design were identified and coded in order to retrieve moderator variables. The results show the following: (1) textual glossing has a medium effect on L2 vocabulary acquisition; (2) the effect of textual glosses on L2 vocabulary acquisition persists over time; (3) glossing location and glossing mode significantly impact the effect of textual glosses on L2 vocabulary acquisition but glossing language has no definite effect; and (4) outcome measure is the only moderator variable among the three influencing factors on vocabulary acquisition. These results are further discussed with reference to existing studies and theory of second language acquisition.

Abstract Background B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL) is the most common type of lymphoma and is significantly heterogeneous among various subtypes. Despite of considerable advancements in treatment strategies for B-NHL, the prognosis of relapsed/refractory patients remains poor. Main text It has been indicated that epigenetic dysregulation is critically associated with the pathogenesis of most hematological malignancies, resulting in the clinical targeting of epigenetic modifications. Bromodomain (BRD) proteins are essential epigenetic regulators which contain eight subfamilies, including BRD and extra-terminal domain (BET) family, histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and HAT-related proteins, transcriptional coactivators, transcriptional mediators, methyltransferases, helicases, ATP-dependent chromatin-remodeling complexes, and nuclear-scaffolding proteins. Most pre-clinical and clinical studies on B-NHL have focused predominantly on the BET family and the use of BET inhibitors as mono-treatment or co-treatment with other anti-tumor drugs. Furthermore, preclinical models of B-NHL have revealed that BET degraders are more active than BET inhibitors. Moreover, with the development of BET inhibitors and degraders, non-BET BRD protein inhibitors have also been designed and have shown antitumor activities in B-NHL preclinical models. This review summarized the mechanism of BRD proteins and the recent progress of BRD protein-related drugs in B-NHL. This study aimed to collect the most recent evidences and summarize possibility on whether BRD proteins can serve as therapeutic targets for B-NHL. Conclusion In summary, BRD proteins are critical epigenetic regulatory factors and may be potential therapeutic targets for B-NHL.

Abstract Background Tauopathies, including Alzheimer’s disease, are characterized by the pathological aggregation of tau protein, which is strongly linked to dysregulation of the autophagy-lysosomal degradation pathway. However, therapeutic strategies targeting this pathway remain limited. Methods We used both in vitro and in vivo models to investigate the role of Raptor in tau pathology. Knockdown of Raptor was performed to assess its impact on mTORC1 activation, autophagy, and tau accumulation. The relationship between USP9X and Raptor was also examined. Pharmacological inhibition of USP9X with WP1130 was employed to further confirm the involvement of the USP9X-Raptor-mTORC1 axis in tau degradation. Results Elevated Raptor levels in the hippocampus of P301S mice led to hyperactivation of mTORC1, impairing autophagy flux. Knockdown of Raptor effectively suppressed mTORC1 activation, promoted autophagy, and mitigated the accumulation of tau and its phosphorylated isoforms. This reduction in tau pathology was accompanied by decreased neuronal loss in the hippocampus, amelioration of synaptic damage, and improvement in cognitive function. The increased Raptor protein observed in the hippocampus of P301S mice was likely attributable to elevated USP9X content, which enhanced Raptor deubiquitination and protected it from proteasomal degradation. Pharmacological inhibition of USP9X with WP1130 in vitro effectively suppressed Raptor, promoted autophagy, and accelerated the degradation of tau and phosphorylated tau. Conclusions Our findings highlight Raptor and USP9X as promising molecular targets for therapeutic intervention in tauopathies. Targeting the USP9X-Raptor-mTORC1 axis may provide a novel strategy for promoting autophagy and mitigating tau pathology in Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies. Graphical Abstract

Apple tree canker is a serious disease caused by species of Cytospora. Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is one of the most important apple-producing areas in China. However, losses due to apple Cytospora canker have seriously damaged the apple industry and affected the economic development of the apple growers in this region. In this study, we used morphological characteristics combined with multilocus phylogenetic analyses of the ITS, act, rpb2, tef1 and tub2 loci to identify isolates from apple (Malus domestica) and wild apple (M. sieversii). As a result, C. hippophaopsis sp. nov. from M. sieversii and C. shawanensis sp. nov. from M. domestica were discovered and proposed herein. Pathogenicity tests were further conducted on 13 varieties of apple and wild apple, which confirmed C. hippophaopsis and C. shawanensis as canker pathogens. Meanwhile, C. hippophaopsis is generally more aggressive than C. shawanensis on the tested varieties of apple and wild apple.

Abstract The limited efficacy of cancer immunotherapy occurs due to the lack of spatiotemporal orchestration of adaptive immune response stimulation and immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment modulation. Herein, we report a nanoplatform fabricated using a pH-sensitive triblock copolymer synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization enabling in situ tumor vaccination and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) polarization. The nanocarrier itself can induce melanoma immunogenic cell death (ICD) via tertiary amines and thioethers concentrating on mitochondria to regulate metabolism in triggering endoplasmic reticulum stress and upregulating gasdermin D for pyroptosis as well as some features of ferroptosis and apoptosis. After the addition of ligand cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (cRGD) and mannose, the mixed nanocarrier with immune adjuvant resiquimod encapsulation can target B16F10 cells for in situ tumor vaccination and TAMs for M1 phenotype polarization. In vivo studies indicate that the mixed targeting nanoplatform elicits tumor ICD, dendritic cell maturation, TAM polarization, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte infiltration and inhibits melanoma volume growth. In combination with immune checkpoint blockade, the survival time of mice is markedly prolonged. This study provides a strategy for utilizing immunoactive materials in the innate and adaptive immune responses to augment cancer therapy.

Steroidal molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and non-imprinted polymer (NIP) were prepared by precipitation polymerization method using cholesterol, deoxycholic acid, and β-sitosterol as the virtual templates, acrylic acid (AA) as the functional monomer, azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linking agent. The morphology and structure of the polymers were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray spectroscopy (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area analysis. The adsorption performance for steroidal substances was also investigated. The results showed that the steroidal MIPs were uniformly-sized and well-dispersed spherical nanoparticles with porous surface. Adsorption performance results showed that MIPs had significantly stronger adsorption capacities for 5α-cholestane compared to NIP. Among the three MIPs, deoxycholic acid and β-sitosterol MIPs demonstrated stronger adsorption capacities for 5α-cholestane than that of cholesterol. The adsorption kinetics studies showed that the adsorption process of MIPs for 5α-cholestane was in accordance with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which was mainly controlled by chemisorption. The isothermal adsorption of both MIPs and NIP conformed to the Langmuir isothermal adsorption model and the Scatchard model, indicating that MIPs exhibited specific selective adsorption for 5α-cholestane and that the adsorption process was monolayer adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.735 mg/g. The study suggests that MIPs prepared with cholesterol, deoxycholic acid, and β-sitosterol as virtual templates have high molecular recognition and selectivity for 5α-cholestane.

In this work, Cr2O3/TiO2 composite coatings were prepared on α-Al2O3 insulating ceramic matrix surface by screen printing and solid phase sintering methods to yield an average film thickness of about 14.10 μm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed changes in the pore structures of the coatings at different TiO2 contents. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis of the coating surface roughness suggested a TiO2 content of 0.025 mol to yield the best surface roughness and pore structure of the coating. The calculation showed an increase in the energy level of the deep trap center on the surface from 1.506 eV to 1.547 eV, reaching a maximum. The surface resistivity of insulating ceramics decreased from 1016 Ω to 1012 Ω. The formation of deep surface traps and the decrease in surface resistivity promoted charge dispersion and suppressed the formation of flashover channels, effectively improving the surface flashover voltage of the ceramics.

Abstract The transition away from coal involves the widespread closure of coal mines. While the potential adverse consequences of these closures on industry and the local economy have received considerable attention, empirical evidence on the benefits of water resources remains limited. Here, we quantify the effect of coal mine closure on terrestrial water storage (TWS) in China using satellite data and a staggered difference-in-differences approach. Our findings indicate a rapid restoration in TWS following closure, with coal mine closures increasing TWS by an average of 18.8 ± 8.9 mm per year. This increase in TWS is primarily attributable to augmented groundwater storage and reduced industrial water usage. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that these TWS gains exceed the indirect impacts of climate change mitigation efforts on water resources, potentially complementing such strategies in water-stressed regions. Overall, our study underscores the positive environmental impact of coal mine closures on water availability in China, potentially facilitating the transition away from coal production and enhancing the sustainability of the energy transition.

Abstract The obstacle to effectively treating Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) lies in the resistance observed toward standard therapies. Identifying therapeutic targets that prove effective for relapsed or refractory patients poses a significant challenge. OTUD3, a deubiquitinase enzyme, is overexpressed in DLBCL tissues. However, its role in DLBCL has not been investigated. Our study has brought to light the multifaceted impact of OTUD3 in DLBCL. Not only does it enhance cell survival through the deubiquitination of MYL12A, but it also induces CD8+ T cell exhaustion within the local environment by deubiquitinating PD-L1. Our findings indicate that the OTUD3 inhibitor, Rupatadine, exerts its influence through competitive binding with OTUD3. This operation diminishes the deubiquitination of both MYL12A and PD-L1 by OTUD3. This research unveils the central and oncogenic role of OTUD3 in DLBCL and highlights the potential clinical application value of the OTUD3 inhibitor, Rupatadine. These findings contribute valuable insights into addressing the challenges of resistant DLBCL cases and offer a promising avenue for further clinical exploration.

Abstract Background The cashmere goat industry is one of the main pillars of animal husbandry in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and plays an irreplaceable role in local economic development. With the change in feeding methods and environment, the cashmere produced by Inner Mongolia cashmere goats shows a tendency of coarser, and the cashmere yield can not meet the consumption demand of people. However, the genetic basis behind these changes is not fully understood. We measured cashmere traits, including cashmere yield (CY), cashmere diameter (CD), cashmere thickness (CT), and fleece length (FL) traits for four consecutive years, and utilized Genome-wide association study of four cashmere traits in Inner Mongolia cashmere goats was carried out using new genomics tools to infer genomic regions and functional loci associated with cashmere traits and to construct haplotypes that significantly affect cashmere traits. Results We estimated the genetic parameters of cashmere traits in Inner Mongolia cashmere goats. The heritability of cashmere yield, cashmere diameter, and fleece length traits of Inner Mongolia cashmere goats were 0.229, 0.359, and 0.250, which belonged to the medium heritability traits (0.2 ~ 0.4). The cashmere thickness trait has a low heritability of 0.053. We detected 151 genome-wide significantly associated SNPs with four cashmere traits on different chromosomes, which were very close to the chromosomes of 392 genes (located within the gene or within ± 500 kb). Notch3, BMPR1B, and CCNA2 have direct functional associations with fibroblasts and follicle stem cells, which play important roles in hair follicle growth and development. Based on GO functional annotation and KEGG enrichment analysis, potential candidate genes were associated with pathways of hair follicle genesis and development (Notch, P13K-Akt, TGF-beta, Cell cycle, Wnt, MAPK). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) represents a significant global public health burden, affecting over 10% of the world’s population. Its high morbidity, multifactorial complications, and substantial mortality impose significant burdens on healthcare systems and patients, necessitating considerable investment in healthcare resources. Renal fibrosis (RF) is a key pathological feature and driver of CKD progression. Extensive research indicates that autophagy participates in the complete pathogenesis of RF. Under physiological conditions, autophagy is essential for maintaining renal cellular homeostasis. However, under pathological conditions, perhaps aberrant and sustained activation of autophagy contributes to oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation, etc. Ultimately, they accelerate the development of RF. The role of autophagy in RF is currently controversial. This review investigates the molecular mechanisms by which intrinsic renal cell autophagy contributes to RF across diverse disease models, suggesting that autophagy and its associated regulatory pathways represent potential diagnostic and therapeutic targets for CKD.

Global warming has significantly altered plant phenology by advancing the timing of leaf emergence, impacting vegetation productivity and adaptability. Winter and spring temperatures have commonly been used to explain spring phenology shifts, but we still lack a solid understanding of the effects of interactions between conditions in different seasons. This study utilizes normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and meteorological data to examine the effects of changes in winter and spring temperatures and precipitation on the start of the vegetation growing season (SOS) at high latitudes in China from 1982 to 2015. We found that SOS in Northeast China, as a whole, showed a weak advancing trend (moving earlier in the year), but with obvious regional differences. Even within the same vegetation type, changes in SOS were faster in the cold north (1.9 days/decade) and the cold and dry northwest (1.6 days/decade) than the regional averages for deciduous needleleaf forests (DNF; 1.2 days/decade) and grasslands (0.6 days/decade). Increases in spring temperatures dominate forest SOS advancement, while grassland SOS is mainly influenced by winter and spring precipitation. Decreases in winter minimum temperature (Tmin) enhance the spring temperature sensitivity of SOS. The way that winter precipitation regulates the spring temperature sensitivity of SOS differs among vegetation types: increasing sensitivity in grasslands but suppressing it in DNF. The moderating effects of winter conditions account for the greatest part of the regional differences in the magnitude of change in SOS. Our findings highlight that, although rising spring temperatures significantly affect SOS, winter Tmin and precipitation are crucial for understanding spatial SOS differences, particularly in cold, arid high-latitude regions. Winter conditions play an essential role in regulating the response of vegetation SOS to spring climate at high latitudes. These results suggest that considering the moderating effect of winter climate can facilitate more accurate predictions of temperature-driven phenological changes under future climate change.

Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, marked by hormonal imbalances and disruptions in glucose and lipid metabolism. Emerging research has indicated a correlation between lipids and PCOS, yet the specific lipid profiles or associated genes identified in various studies vary, and observational data alone cannot establish causation. Therefore, our study seeks to establish a causal association between lipidome and PCOS.Methods Data from genome-wide association studies, liposomes, metabolites, and PCOS-related information were collected. Four rounds of double-sample bidirectional intermediate Mendelian Randomization analyses including liposomes to disease, liposomes to metabolites, metabolites to disease, and reverse Mendelian Randomization analysis of lipids, total effect values and intermediary effect values were calculated. The proportion mediated by the intermediary effect was determined by dividing the intermediary effect value by the total effect value.Results The analyses revealed that three liposomes and nine metabolites were causally associated with PCOS. Specifically, phosphatidylcholine and 1-Stearoyl-2-Oleoyl-Glycosylphosphatidylinositol were identified as independent risk factors for PCOS through further Mendelian Randomization analysis. The risk of developing PCOS increased by 32% for every one standard deviation increase in phosphatidylcholine and by 17% for every one standard deviation increase in 1-Stearoyl-2-Oleoyl-Glycosylphosphatidylinositol. Furthermore, the study revealed that phosphatidylcholine can influence the development of PCOS with 1-Stearoyl-2-Oleoyl-Glycosylphosphatidylinositol acting as a mediator, explaining 4.97% of the effect.Conclusions This study confirmed a causal relationship between phosphatidylcholine and 1-Stearoyl-2-Oleoyl-Glycosylphosphatidylinositol with PCOS, where phosphatidylcholine can influence the occurrence of PCOS with 1-Stearoyl-2-Oleoyl-Glycosylphosphatidylinositol as a mediator.

Objectives To investigate all pregnancies and analyze the factors influencing pregnancy outcomes in patients with adenomyosis after high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU).Materials and methods A total of 231 patients with adenomyosis who completed HIFU and wished to conceive were enrolled. The symptom improvement and information of pregnancy were recorded during the follow-up period. Factors influencing pregnancy outcomes were analyzed using multivariate regression analysis and survival analysis.Results After HIFU, 100 of 231 (43.3%) patients became pregnant within 96 months, including 77 (77/194, 39.7%) in natural and 23 (23/37, 62.2%) in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) pregnancies following gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa). Among the 108 (46.8%, 108/231) infertile patients (defined as the failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months of regular unprotected sexual intercourse, 40 primary infertility and 68 secondary infertility), 31 (28.7%) became pregnant. At the end of the follow-up, 70 successfully delivered 71 healthy babies. No uterine rupture occurred during pregnancy and delivery. Objective To develop a novel scoring system based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for predicting the difficulty of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) ablation for uterine fibroids.Materials and methods A total of 637 patients with uterine fibroids were enrolled. Sonication time, non-perfused volume ratio (NPVR), and ultrasound energy delivered for ablating 1 mm3 of fibroid tissue volume (E/V) were each classified as three levels and assigned scores from 0 to 2, respectively. Treatment difficulty level was then assessed by adding up the scores of sonication time, NPVR and E/V for each patient. The patients with score lower than 3 were categorized into low difficulty group, with score equal to or greater than 3 were categorized into high difficulty group. The potential predictors for treatment difficulty were compared between the two groups. Multifactorial logistic regression analysis model was created by analyzing the variables. The difficulty score system was developed using the beta coefficients of the logistic model.Results Signal intensity on T2WI, fibroid location index, largest diameter of fibroids, abdominal wall thickness, homogeneity of the signal of fibroids, and uterine position were independent influencing factors for the difficulty of USgHIFU for uterine fibroids. A prediction equation was obtained: difficulty score = 17 × uterine position (anteverted =0, retroverted =1)+71 × signal intensity (hypointense = 0, isointense/hyperintense = 1) +8 × enhancement (homogenous = 0, heterogeneous = 1)+25×(largest diameter of fibroids-20) +35 × (fibroid location index −0.2) +1×(abdominal wall thickness −5).Conclusions This scoring system established based on MRI findings can be used to reliably predict the difficulty level of USgHIFU treatment of uterine fibroids.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has gradually developed applications such as collecting sensory data and building intelligent services, which has led to an explosion in mobile data traffic. Meanwhile, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, semantic communication has attracted great attention as a new communication paradigm. However, for IoT devices, however, processing image information efficiently in real time is an essential task for the rapid transmission of semantic information. With the increase of model parameters in deep learning methods, the model inference time in sensor devices continues to increase. In contrast, the Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) has fewer parameters, making it more suitable for processing real-time scene tasks such as image segmentation, which lays the foundation for real-time, effective, and accurate image transmission. However, the parameters of PCNN are determined by trial and error, which limits its application. To overcome this limitation, an Improved Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (IPCNN) model is proposed in this work. The IPCNN constructs the connection between the static properties of the input image and the dynamic properties of the neurons, and all its parameters are set adaptively, which avoids the inconvenience of manual setting in traditional methods and improves the adaptability of parameters to different types of images. Experimental segmentation results demonstrate the validity and efficiency of the proposed self-adaptive parameter setting method of IPCNN on the gray images and natural images from the Matlab and Berkeley Segmentation Datasets. The IPCNN method achieves a better segmentation result without training, providing a new solution for the real-time transmission of image semantic information.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most frequently diagnosed chronic joint disease. CircSEC24A is significantly elevated in OA chondrocytes upon IL-1β stimulation. However, its biological function in OA is still not fully understood. Methods: The circRNAs-miRNA-mRNA network was predicted by bioinformatics analysis. An in vitro OA chondrocytes model was established by IL-1β stimulation. The expression of circSEC24A, miR-107-5p, CASP3, apoptosis-related molecules and extracellular matrix (ECM) components were detected by Western blot and qRT-PCR. MTT assay and Annexin V/PI staining were employed to monitor cell viability and apoptosis, respectively. The interaction between circSEC24A and miR-107-5p, as well as the binding between miR-107-5p and CASP3 3’ UTR were detected by luciferase reporter and RIP assays. Cytokine secretion was monitored by ELISA assay. The role of circSEC24A was also explored in anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) rat models. Results: CircSEC24A and CASP3 were increased, but miR-107-5p was decreased in rat OA cartilage tissues and OA chondrocytes. CircSEC24A acted as a sponge of miR-107-5p. Knockdown of circSEC24A promoted chondrocyte proliferation, but suppressed chondrocyte apoptosis, ECM degradation and inflammation via sponging miR-107-5p. CASP3 was identified as a miR-107-5p target gene. MiR-107-5p mimics protected against OA progression via targeting CASP3. Silencing of circSEC24A alleviated OA progression in ACLT model. Conclusion: CircSEC24A promotes OA progression through miR-107-5p/CASP3 axis.

Abstract Background Interventional therapy, in conjunction with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), has shown promising outcomes for treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombosis (PVTT). With the advent of immunotherapy, the combined use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has attracted great attention due to their potential effectiveness in advanced HCC. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of a triple therapy regimen (Interventional therapy, TKIs and ICIs, IT-TKI-ICI) with a dual therapy regimen (Interventional therapy and TKIs, IT-TKI) in the treatment of HCC and PVTT (HCC-PVTT). Methods A comprehensive search was carried out in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library databases. Primary outcome measures were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), while secondary outcomes included tumor response rate, adverse event incidence as well as downstaging surgery rate. Statistical analysis was conducted using Revman 5.4 software. Results The meta-analysis finally included 6 cohort studies. The triple therapy group demonstrated significantly prolonged OS and PFS compared to the dual therapy group. Meanwhile, the former exhibited significantly higher rates of objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and better downstaging effects with a higher salvage surgery rate without significantly increasing adverse events. Conclusion In comparison to dual therapy, the triple therapy with interventional therapy, TKIs, and ICIs demonstrates superior efficacy and equivalent safety for HCC-PVTT.

Abstract Background The accumulation of senescent microglia has been highlighted as a critical contributor to the progression of tauopathies. Irisin, a muscle-derived hormone produced by the proteolytic cleavage of Fibronectin-domain III containing 5 (FNDC5), mediates the pleiotropic effects of exercise on the physical body. Herein, we investigate the potential role of irisin in microglial senescence in tauopathies. Methods To model tauopathies both in vivo and in vitro, we utilized P301S tau transgenic mice and tau K18 fibril-treated microglia BV2 cells, respectively. We first examined the expression of the irisin expression and senescence phenotypes of microglia in tauopathies. Subsequently, we investigated the impact of irisin on microglial senescence and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Result We observed a reduction in irisin levels and an onset of premature microglial senescence both in vivo and in vitro. Irisin administration was found to counteract microglial senescence and ameliorate cognitive decline in P301S mice. Mechanistically, irisin effectively inhibited microglial senescence by stimulating the expression of mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), a master regulator of mitochondrial respiratory chain biogenesis, thereby enhancing mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Silencing TFAM eliminated the inhibitory effect of irisin on microglial senescence as well as the restorative effect of irisin on mitochondrial OXPHOS. Furthermore, the SIRT1/PGC1α signaling pathway appeared to be implicated in irisin-mediated upregulation of TFAM. Conclusion Taken together, our study revealed that irisin mitigated microglial senescence via TFAM-driven mitochondrial biogenesis, suggesting a promising new avenue for therapeutic strategies targeting tauopathies.

Abstracts Purpose Preoperative anemia increases postoperative morbidity, mortality, and the risk of allogeneic transfusion. However, the incidence of preoperative anemia in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and its relationship to postoperative outcomes has not been previously reported. Methods We conducted a comprehensive literature search through PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Sincien, and Embase from inception to July 2023 to investigate the prevalence of preoperative anemia in patients undergoing Total Joint Arthroplasty, comorbidities between anemic and non-anemicpatients before surgery, and postoperative outcomes. postoperative outcomes were analyzed. Overall prevalence was calculated using a random-effects model, and heterogeneity between studies was examined by Cochran's Q test and quantified by the I 2 statistic. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression analyses were performed to identify sources of heterogeneity. Publication bias was assessed by funnel plots and validated by Egger's test. Results A total of 21 studies with 369,101 samples were included, all of which were retrospective cohort studies. 3 studies were of high quality and 18 studies were of moderate quality. The results showed that the prevalence of preoperative anemia was 22% in patients awaiting arthroplasty; subgroup analyses revealed that the prevalence of preoperative anemia was highest in patients awaiting revision of total knee arthroplasty; the highest prevalence of preoperative anemia was found in the Americas; preoperative anemia was more prevalent in the female than in the male population; and preoperative anemia with a history of preoperative anemia was more common in the female than in the male population. patients with a history of preoperative anemia; patients with joint replacement who had a history of preoperative anemia had an increased risk of infection, postoperative blood transfusion rate, postoperative blood transfusion, Deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs, days in hospital, readmission within three months, and mortality compared with patients who did not have preoperative anemia. Conclusion The prevalence of preoperative anemia in patients awaiting total joint arthroplasty is 22%, and is higher in TKA and female patients undergoing revision, while preoperative anemia is detrimental to the patient's postoperative recovery and will increase the risk of postoperative complications, transfusion rates, days in the hospital, readmission rates, and mortality.

Abstract Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is a devastating kidney disease and lacks effective therapeutic interventions. The present study was aimed to determine whether reconstituted high‐density lipoprotein (rHDL) ameliorated renal injury in eNOS−/− dbdb mice, a mouse model of DKD. Three groups of mice, wild type C57BLKS/J (non‐diabetes), eNOS−/− dbdb (diabetes), and eNOS−/− dbdb treated with rHDL (diabetes+rHDL) with both males and females were used. The rHDL nanoparticles were administered to eNOS−/− dbdb mice at Week 16 at 5 μg/g body weight in ~100 μL of saline solution twice per week for 4 weeks via retroorbital injection. We found that rHDL treatment significantly blunted progression of albuminuria and GFR decline observed in DKD mice. Histological examinations showed that the rHDLs significantly alleviated glomerular injury and renal fibrosis, and inhibited podocyte loss. Western blots and immunohistochemical examinations showed that increased protein abundances of fibronectin and collagen IV in the renal cortex of eNOS−/− dbdb mice were significantly reduced by the rHDLs. Taken together, the present study suggests a renoprotective effect of rHDLs on DKD.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) stands as a formidable neurodegenerative ailment and a prominent contributor to dementia. The scarcity of available therapies for AD accentuates the exigency for innovative treatment modalities. Psilocybin, a psychoactive alkaloid intrinsic to hallucinogenic mushrooms, has garnered attention within the neuropsychiatric realm due to its established safety and efficacy in treating depression. Nonetheless, its potential as a therapeutic avenue for AD remains largely uncharted. This comprehensive review endeavors to encapsulate the pharmacological effects of psilocybin while elucidating the existing evidence concerning its potential mechanisms contributing to a positive impact on AD. Specifically, the active metabolite of psilocybin, psilocin, elicits its effects through the modulation of the 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptor (5-HT2A receptor). This modulation causes heightened neural plasticity, diminished inflammation, and improvements in cognitive functions such as creativity, cognitive flexibility, and emotional facial recognition. Noteworthy is psilocybin’s promising role in mitigating anxiety and depression symptoms in AD patients. Acknowledging the attendant adverse reactions, we proffer strategies aimed at tempering or mitigating its hallucinogenic effects. Moreover, we broach the ethical and legal dimensions inherent in psilocybin’s exploration for AD treatment. By traversing these avenues, We propose therapeutic potential of psilocybin in the nuanced management of Alzheimer’s disease.

Background: Previous research has established carbon monoxide (CO) as a significant air pollutant contributing to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission. The spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the relationship between short-duration CO exposure and COVID-19 incidence remain underexplored. Investigating such heterogeneity plays a crucial role in designing region-specific cost-effective public health policies, exploring the reasons for heterogeneity, and understanding the temporal trends in the association between CO and an emerging infectious disease such as COVID-19. Methods: The 49 states of the continental United States (U.S.) were examined in this study. Initially, we developed time-series generalized additive models (GAMs) for each state to assess the preliminary correlation between daily COVID-19 cases and short-term CO exposure from April 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021. Subsequently, the correlations were compiled utilizing Leroux-prior-based conditional autoregression (LCAR) to achieve a smoothed spatial distribution. Finally, we integrated a time-varying component into the GAM and LCAR to analyze temporal correlations and illuminate the factors contributing to spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Results: Our analysis revealed that, across the 49 states, a 10-ppb increase in CO concentration was associated with a 1.33 % (95%CI: 0.86%–1.81 %) increase in COVID-19 cases on average. Furthermore, spatial variability was noted, with weaker correlations observed in the central and southeastern regions, stronger associations in the northeastern regions, and negligible associations in the western regions. Temporally, the correlation was not significant from April 2020 to June 2021, but began to increase steadily thereafter until the end of 2021. Additionally, vaccination and temperature were determined to be potential causes contributing to the heterogeneity, indicating stronger positive associations in areas with higher vaccination rates and temperatures. Conclusion: The findings of this study underscore the importance of monitoring CO pollution in the central and northeastern US, especially in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Abstract Background Lung cancer is cancer with the highest morbidity and mortality in the world and poses a serious threat to human health. Therefore, discovering new treatments is urgently needed to improve lung cancer prognosis. Small molecule inhibitors targeting the ubiquitin-proteasome system have achieved great success, in which deubiquitinase inhibitors have broad clinical applications. The deubiquitylase OTUD3 was reported to promote lung tumorigenesis by stabilizing oncoprotein GRP78, implying that inhibition of OTUD3 may be a therapeutic strategy for lung cancer. Results In this study, we identified a small molecule inhibitor of OTUD3, Rolapitant, by computer-aided virtual screening and biological experimental verification from FDA-approved drugs library. Rolapitant inhibited the proliferation of lung cancer cells by inhibiting deubiquitinating activity of OTUD3. Quantitative proteomic profiling indicated that Rolapitant significantly upregulated the expression of death receptor 5 (DR5). Rolapitant also promoted lung cancer cell apoptosis through upregulating cell surface expression of DR5 and enhanced TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Mechanistically, Rolapitant directly targeted the OTUD3-GRP78 axis to trigger endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP)-DR5 signaling, sensitizing lung cancer cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. In the vivo assays, Rolapitant suppressed the growth of lung cancer xenografts in immunocompromised mice at suitable dosages without apparent toxicity. Conclusion In summary, the present study identifies Rolapitant as a novel inhibitor of deubiquitinase OTUD3 and establishes that the OTUD3-GRP78 axis is a potential therapeutic target for lung cancer.

Sexual systems play important roles in angiosperm evolution and exhibit substantial variations among different floras. Thus, studying their evolution in a whole flora is crucial for understanding the formation and maintenance of plant biodiversity and predicting its responses to environmental change. In this study, we determined the patterns of plant sexual systems and their associations with geographic elements and various life-history traits in dry-hot valley region of southwestern China, an extremely vulnerable ecosystem. Of the 3166 angiosperm species recorded in this area, 74.5% were hermaphroditic, 13.5% were monoecious and 12% were dioecious, showing a high incidence of diclinous species. Diclinous species were strongly associated with tropical elements, whereas hermaphroditic species were strongly associated with temperate and cosmopolitan elements. We also found that hermaphroditism was strongly associated with showy floral displays, specialist entomophily, dry fruits and herbaceous plants. Dioecy was strongly associated with inconspicuous, pale-colored flowers, generalist entomophily, fleshy fruits, and woody plants, whereas monoecy was strongly associated with inconspicuous, pale-colored flowers, anemophily, dry fruits, and herbaceous plants. In addition, hermaphroditic species with generalist entomophily tended to flower in the dry season, whereas diclinous species with specialist entomophily tended to flower in the rainy season. However, independent of sexual systems, plants that produce dry fruits tended to flower in the rainy season and set fruits in the dry season, but the opposite pattern was found for fleshy fruit-producing plants. Our results suggest that in the dry-hot valleys, plant sexual systems are associated with geographic elements as well as various life-history traits that are sensitive to environmental change.

Financial incentives play a key role in promoting renewable energy investments that can help China achieve the ‘dual carbon’ goal. The national emissions trading scheme (ETS) and the renewable energy portfolio standard (RPS) are two existing market-based policy instruments that can generate stable expected returns for low-carbon projects. This paper studies the interactive distribution effects of these two market-based instruments. We use the micro-level thermal power plant data to investigate the abatement effects of the national ETS, in which the details show that the existing rate-based ETS will result in higher negative impacts on power units, whose installed capacities are smaller than 400 MW. The interactive distribution effects between the two markets will occur when the permit allocation standards of the national ETS become stricter than the existing ones. Provinces in Eastern China and Northern China will face high pressure on costs in both ETS and RPS markets. When the levels of the permit allocation standards are set as 70% of the existing ones and the carbon price is assumed to be 200 yuan/ton in 2030, the annual market size of the national ETS will be nearly 100 billion yuan, and the annual market size is predicted to be 250 billion yuan. In the existing rate-based national ETS, the China Certified Emission Reduction (CCER) mechanism will have an offsetting effect, which should be taken into serious consideration during the policy-making processes in the future.

Abstract Background Several studies have previously reported the normal values of corneal volume (CV) in various populations, whereas little is known about the CV distribution in healthy young Chinese adults. Our study aimed to investigate the distribution of CV and its relationships with other ocular biometric parameters among healthy young Chinese adults. Methods A total of 1645 eyes from 1645 students at Dali University in Yunnan Province, China, were analyzed. Pentacam was used to measure CV. Central corneal thickness (CCT) and biomechanically corrected intraocular pressure (bIOP) were evaluated by Corvis-ST. Other biometrical parameters, including axial length (AL), keratometry, and white-to-white (WTW) distance, were measured using IOL Master. Results The mean age of the study population was 19.01 ± 0.92 years, and 68.81% of them were women. The CV was normally distributed in the whole sample, with a mean value of 61.23 ± 3.22 mm3. Abstract Industrial data trading can considerably enhance the economic and social value of abundant data resources. However, traditional data trading models are plagued by critical flaws in fairness, security, privacy and regulation. To tackle the above issues, we first proposed a distributed industrial data trading architecture based on blockchain and cloud for multiple data owners. Subsequently, we realized implemented distributed identity management by the distributed verifiable credentials scheme that possesses the desirable properties, i.e., selective disclosure, multi-show unlinkability, threshold traceability, and public verifiability. Finally, we presented a fair trading mechanism without trusted third parties based on smart contracts, and we employed blockchain and multi-signature to ensure data integrity during data storage and trading. The security and performance analysis shows that our proposal is feasible for sensitive data trading for multiple data owners and provides a useful exploration for future industrial data trading and management.

Extracting agricultural parcel boundaries from remote sensing images based on deep learning methods is currently the most promising method. Due to the diversity of agricultural types and limitations of deep learning networks, parcel boundaries extracted by edge detection deep learning networks lack target specificity, and parcel boundaries extracted by semantic segmentation deep learning networks generally causes a loss of precise boundary information. Based on the principles of multi-task deep learning networks Psi-Net, BsiNet, and ResUNet-a, we constructed a parallel multi-task deep learning network M_ResUnet. The M_ResUnet is capable of performing edge detection and semantic segmentation simultaneously, and it is designed for extracting agricultural parcel boundaries from high-resolution remote sensing images. To improve the effectiveness of parcel boundary recognition, the edge enhancement concept from the context-aware tracing strategy (CATS) is introduced into the M_ResUnet, which enhanced the continuity and effectiveness of parcel boundary recognition and accelerated network training convergence. Finally, we conducted experiments on three different study areas with different remote sensing data sources and agricultural parcel types. The experimental results demonstrate that the method we proposed achieved better continuity in identifying parcel boundaries, and it also improved the recognition of boundaries between neighboring parcels with strong similarities remote sensing features such as texture and spectral characteristics.

Some new techniques of aggregating hesitant fuzzy numbers (HFNs) by using monotonic dependent OWA (MDOWA) operators are investigated. By utilizing the score value of HFN, the concepts of hesitant fuzzy configuration vector and hesitant fuzzy hybrid configuration vector are proposed. Then, some methods of calculating variable weights related to the MDOWA operators under hesitant fuzzy environments are presented. Further, some operators, including hesitant fuzzy monotonic dependent OWA (HFMDOWA) operators and hesitant fuzzy hybrid monotonic dependent OWA (HFHMDOWA) operators, are developed, such as balanced HFMDOWA operators, rewarded HFMDOWA operators, balanced HFHMDOWA operators, rewarded HFHMDOWA operators, and so on. These developed operators are applied to multiple criteria group decision making (MCGDM), and a novel MCGDM algorithm is presented. By using the presented operators and algorithm, we can obtain symmetric decision-making results. Finally, an application example is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed MCGDM techniques.

Biological control plays an increasingly important role in various aspects of modern agriculture and forestry. Identifying biocontrol strains with commercial potential for effective disease management is currently a focal point in biological control research. In this study, Bacillus atrophaeus XHG-1-3m2, a strain with significant biocontrol potential against Wilsonomyces carpophilus causing shot hole disease in wild apricots, was developed. The study determined the antibacterial activity of the fermentation broth, the optimal fermentation medium composition and conditions, and explored its effectiveness in controlling Wilsonomyces carpophilus. The optimal fermentation medium for strain XHG-1-3m2 comprises 12.5 g/L yeast extract, 12.5 g/L soy peptone, 10.0 g/L sodium chloride, 1 g/L ammonium chloride, 1 g/L potassium dihydrogen phosphate, 1 g/L disodium hydrogen phosphate, and 0.5 g/L magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. With an initial pH of 7.0, a liquid volume of 40%, an inoculum volume of 3%, and shaking incubation at 28 °C for 24 h, the viable cell count reached 14 × 109 CFU/mL. In vitro and in vivo tests on leaves revealed that the fermentation broth and the biocontrol biofertilizer derived from this strain inhibited the leaf lesions caused by Wilsonomyces carpophilus on wild apricots, achieving inhibition rates of 94.62% and 82.46%, respectively.

The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of Phaeodactylum tricornutum oil (PO) and Laminaria japonica oil (LO) against obesity and other metabolic disorders in a high-fat diet (HFD) induced obese mouse model. The results revealed that PO or LO supplementation significantly reduced HFD-induced body weight gain, hyperlipemia, and fat accumulation in mice. PO or LO supplementation also inhibited SREBP-1-mediated de novo lipogenesis and PPARγ-mediated adipogenesis, as well as enhanced PPARα-mediated fatty acid β-oxidation in the WAT and liver of HFD-fed mice. Moreover, PO or LO supplementation attenuated low-grade chronic inflammation, hyperglycemia and insulin resistance in obese mice. Furthermore, Dietary PO or LO also modulated HFD-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and increased the SCFAs production. More importantly, our results also manifested that the ameliorative effect of PO and LO against HFD-induced obesity, IR and gut microbiota dysbiosis was comparable, but was superior than that of krill oil and fish oil.

Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a multidrug-resistant (MDR) superbug by causing severe infections, with high mortality rates. The ability of A. baumannii to form biofilms significantly contributes to its persistence in diverse environmental and hospital settings. Here we report that farnesol, an FDA-approved commercial cosmetic and flavoring agent, demonstrates efficacy for both inhibition of biofilm formation, and disruption of established A. baumannii biofilms. Moreover, no resistance to farnesol was observed even after prolonged culture in the presence of sub-inhibitory farnesol doses. Farnesol combats A. baumannii biofilms by direct killing, while also facilitating biofilm detachment. Furthermore, farnesol was safe, and effective, for both prevention and treatment of A. baumannii biofilms in an ex vivo burned human skin model. Since current treatment options for A. baumannii biofilm infections were mainly counted on the combination therapy of last-resort antibiotics, and clearly non-sustainable due to robust MDR phenotype of A. baumannii, we propose that farnesol alone can be repurposed as a highly effective agent for both preventing and treating life-threating biofilm-associated infections of A. baumannii due to its proven safety, convenient topical delivery, and excellent efficiency, plus its superiority of evading resistance development.

Background: With the growing use of nitrogen-containing pesticides in agriculture, their residues in the environment have raised significant public health concerns.Objective: This study aimed to develop a novel PPy-DBSA/IT-SPME coating to enhance the detection efficiency of polar nitrogen-containing pesticides in water matrices.Methods: The preparation conditions were optimized, including pyrrole concentration at 7.0 mol/L, DBSA concentration at 0.014 mol/L, oxidant concentration at 0.35 mol/L, and a coating cycle repeated 10 times. High-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was employed for detection.Results: The novel coating effectively adsorbed 19 different categories of polar nitrogen-containing pesticides, including sulfonylureas, triazolopyrimidines, diphenyl ether herbicides, benzoylurea insecticides, and phenylurea herbicides, with unadsorbed rates below 10%. The analytical method achieved an average recovery rate of 61.92% to 115.21%, with an RSD below 5.0%. Detection and quantification limits ranged from 0.012 to 0.524 μg/L and 0.127 to 5.243 μg/L, respectively.Conclusion: The developed method is green, efficient, simple, and cost-effective. It offers an environmentally friendly and user-friendly approach for the detection of polar nitrogen-containing pesticide residues, demonstrating good recovery and precision. This method holds potential for wide application in environmental monitoring and food safety.

Herbaceous marshes are widely distributed in China and are vital to regional ecological security and sustainable development. Vegetation net primary productivity (NPP) is a vital indicator of vegetation growth. Climatic change can significantly affect NPP, but variations in NPP of herbaceous marsh and their responses to climate change in China remain unclear. Using meteorological data and MODIS NPP data during 2000-2020, this study analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of NPP and their responses to climate change in Chinese herbaceous marshes. We found that the annual NPP of herbaceous marshes in China increased significantly at a rate of 3.34 g C/m2/a from 2000 to 2020, with an average value of 336.60 g C/m2. The increased annual total precipitation enhanced the national average NPP, whereas annual mean temperature had no significant effect on the national average NPP. Regionally, precipitation had a significant positive effect on the NPP in temperate semi-arid and arid and temperate semi-humid and humid marsh regions. For the first time, we discovered asymmetry effects of daytime and nighttime temperatures on NPP in herbaceous marshes of China. In temperate humid and semi-humid marsh regions, increased summer daytime temperature decreased the NPP while increased summer nighttime temperature increased the NPP. In the Tibetan Plateau, increased autumn daytime temperature, as well as summer daytime and nighttime temperatures could increase the NPP of herbaceous marshes. This study highlights the different influences of seasonal climate change on the NPP of herbaceous marshes in China and indicates that the differential effects of daytime and nighttime temperatures should be considering in simulating the NPP of herbaceous marshes in terrestrial ecosystem models, especially under the background of global asymmetric diurnal warming.

Determining the Ecological Restoration Standards (ERS) for lakes, within the context of natural climatic conditions, is imperative for the protection of the ecological environment and water resources in northern China. Based on climate data gathered from 49 meteorological stations and water resources survey information conducted in 12 cities situated on the Inner Mongolia Plateau (IMP), this study rigorously quantified the effects of climate change and anthropogenic activities on the reduction of area of nine lakes located on the IMP. This was achieved by utilizing both the Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) and Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) methods. Additionally, it identified the primary drivers behind the shrinkage of these lakes and determined the ERS for the nine lakes based on current natural climatic conditions. The findings indicate that the nine lakes have been shrinking due to human activities, with their areas ranging from 0.77 to 73.09 km2. Daihai Lake has the largest restoration area of 100.26 km2, while Haotongyinchagannar Lake has the smallest restoration area of 13.21 km2. The study further suggests that anthropogenic activities have a greater impact on lake shrinkage compared to the effects of climate change. Overexploitation of groundwater resources stands as the principal factor exacerbating lake shrinkage. Therefore, it is essential to implement an appropriate action plan for the sustainable management and utilization of groundwater resources, particularly by enhancing the efficiency of agricultural irrigation, to ensure the ecological preservation and rehabilitation of lakes located on the IMP.

IntroductionMelatonin can treat androgenetic alopecia in males. Goats can be used as animal models to study melatonin treatment for human alopecia. In this study, a meta-analysis of melatonin’s effects on goat hair follicles was pursued.MethodsLiterature from the last 20 years was searched in Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science and PubMed. Melatonin’s effect on goat hair follicles and litter size were performed through a traditional meta-analysis and trial sequential analysis. A network meta-analysis used data from oocyte development to blastocyst. The hair follicle genes regulated by melatonin performed KEGG and PPI. We hypothesized that there are differences in melatonin receptors between different goats, and therefore completed melatonin receptor 1A homology modelling and molecular docking.ResultsThe results showed that melatonin did not affect goat primary follicle or litter size. However, there was a positive correlation with secondary follicle growth. The goat melatonin receptor 1A SNPs influence melatonin’s functioning. The wild type gene defect MR1 is a very valuable animal model.DiscussionFuture studies should focus on the relationship between goat SNPs and the effect of embedded melatonin. This study will provide theoretical guidance for the cashmere industry and will be informative for human alopecia research.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic effect and safety of ultrasound‐guided thoracic paravertebral block (UG‐TPVB) in Chinese elderly patients undergoing video‐assisted thoracic lobectomy (VATL) and to study the influence of aging factors on these effects. Methods This study was a single‐center, single‐blind, prospective, randomized, controlled trial. A total of 300 patients scheduled for VATL were recruited and randomly divided into the UG‐TPVB group (T group) and conventional anesthesia group (C group) according to the recruitment order, and subgroups were set up according to whether the age was ≥65 years old or not. The postoperative 12, 24, and 48 h static/dynamic visual analog scale (VAS) scores, intraoperative fentanyl consumption, postoperative extubation time, post‐anesthesia care unit (PACU) stay time, hospitalization days, postoperative complications, and other indicators were compared between the two groups. Results The postoperative 12, 24, and 48 h static/dynamic VAS scores of the T group were significantly lower than those of the C group. The intraoperative fentanyl consumption, postoperative extubation time, PACU stay time, and postoperative hospitalization days were significantly lower than those of the C group. The incidence of postoperative 48 h urinary retention in the T group was significantly lower than that in the C group. These advantages showed no significant difference or slight difference between elderly patients and nonelderly patients, indicating that UG‐TPVB did not influence the analgesic effect and safety of VATL patients by age or age difference. Conclusion UG‐TPVB is an effective and safe perioperative analgesia method for elderly VATL patients. Its application improves the quality of life and prognosis of elderly VATL patients.
