(1) Background: The identification of vaccination status and attitudes towards vaccines among celiac disease (CD) patients is of great importance, but it has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate coverage against vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), attitudes towards vaccinations, and its determinants among CD patients. (2) Methods: An anonymous web-based validated questionnaire was sent to a mailing list of CD adult patients. Patients were asked to self-report their previous vaccinations and attitudes towards vaccinations, which were defined as positive, negative, and partially positive/negative. The influencing factors towards vaccinations were investigated, and crude and adjusted odds ratios (AdjORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. (3) Results: The questionnaire was sent to 412 patients, with a response rate of 31.6% (130 patients, 105 women, median age 40 years, interquartile range 36–51). Patients self-reported vaccination against the following diseases: 73.8% tetanus, 42.3% flu, 20% measles, mumps and rubella, 19.2% meningitis, and 16.2% pneumococcus. Thirty-two people (24.6%) did not remember all of their previous vaccinations. In total, 104 (80%) respondents had a positive attitude towards vaccines, 25 (19.2%) a partially positive/negative one, and 1 a negative one. The determinants significantly influencing the positive attitude were being a graduate (AdjORs 7.49) and a belief in the possible return of VPDs with declining vaccination coverage rates (AdjORs 7.42), while the use of complementary and alternative medicines (AdjORs 0.11) and past negative experience (AdjORs 0.16) were associated with a negative attitude. (4) Conclusions: Despite four out of five CD patients showing a strong positive attitude towards vaccinations, one out of five had a partially negative one. Only a minority (16–20%) reported being vaccinated against some VPDs potentially harmful to their CD because of hyposplenism, such as meningitis and pneumococcus. The low vaccination rate against some VPDs, in spite of the 80% of CD patients stating a positive attitude towards vaccination, may be explained in part by patients’ vaccine hesitancy and in part by a possible role of physicians in under-prescribing vaccinations to these patients. These results may be a starting point for developing specific vaccination campaigns to increase vaccination rates against VPDs in CD patients.

Resumen: El presente proyecto de investigación -con acción en el territorio de los vecinos del Barrio San Francisquito, intenta reflejar nuestra visión en adecuar modos de construir, habitar y pensar como experiencia de salvación comunitaria desde una geocultura determinada. Esta conceptualización y modos de posicionarnos como introducción en el marco de nuestro proyecto académico dan cuenta por dónde andaremos buscando vestigios… En principio trabajamos con una herramienta técnica para aplastar las botellas de una manera más eficiente; material necesario y fundamental para elaborar nuestro objeto de estudio e investigación, fue desarrollada por los alumnos de la Escuela Técnica San Francisquito, pues, y según el relato que hemos escuchado de su Director, Alexis Alsop, la concreción de dicho utensilio, proviene de una búsqueda que se origina con la necesidad imperiosa de ayudar a la abuela de un alumno, que realizaba dicha labor, aplastando las botellas con los pies. Basados en el pensamiento descrito y expresado íntegramente en los párrafos anteriores se propone un nuevo prototipo de paredes que intenta superar y mejorar la propuesta original que utilizaba dicho aplastador según indagaciones que le precedieron mediante una investigación anterior de la cual la presente es continuidad. El mismo resurge ante el compromiso y dedicación de los alumnos de 5º año de la carrera de ingeniería ambiental que aceptan el desafío de compartir sus saberes técnicos universitarios integrándolos a los saberes del nivel secundario de los jóvenes de la escuela. El fin es transferir la experiencia en el “aprender a saber hacer” con la comunidad del Barrio San Francisquito, mediados por la institución educativa que le es confiable. Es generar puentes colaborativos entre la Facultad, la Escuela y el Barrio como instrumento fundante de una construcción colectiva del conocimiento disponible que debe ser asequible para cualquier persona, familia o grupo que necesite disponer de él. Abstract: The present research project - with action in the territory of the neighbors of Barrio San Francisquito, tries to reflect our vision in adapting ways of building, inhabiting and thinking as an experience of community salvation from a specific geoculture. This conceptualization and ways of positioning ourselves as an introduction in the framework of our academic project show where we are looking for vestiges ... In principle we work with a technical tool to crush the bottles in a more efficient, necessary and fundamental material to develop our object of study and research, it was developed by the students of the San Francisquito Technical School, then, and according to the story we have heard from its Director, Alexis Alsop, the concretion of said utensil, comes from a search that originates with the imperative need to help the grandmother of a student, who performed such work, crushing the bottles with his feet. Based on the thought described and expressed in full in the previous paragraphs, a new prototype of walls is proposed that attempts to overcome and improve the original proposal that said crusher used according to inquiries that preceded it through an earlier investigation of which this is continuity. The same one resurfaces before the commitment and dedication of the students of 5th year of the environmental engineering career that accept the challenge of sharing their university technical knowledge integrating them to the secondary level knowledge of the young people of the School to transfer the experience in the "learn to know how to do" with the Community of Barrio San Francisquito, mediated by the educational institution that is reliable. It is to generate collaborative bridges between the faculty, the school and the Neighborhood as a founding instrument of a collective construction of the available knowledge that must be affordable for any person, family or group that needs to have it available.

Introduction: High levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and impaired antioxidant defense systems lead to oxidative stress (OxS) and tissue injury in different intestinal and extra intestinal conditions, including celiac disease (CD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the role and potential use of ROS and other biomarkers of OxS in the clinical management of CD. Methods: We collected duodenal specimens and blood samples from naïve patients (N-CD), patients on a gluten free diet (GFD) including responders (CD-GFD) and non-responders (NRCD). We measured plasmatic ROS production (electron paramagnetic resonance, EPR), lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, TBARS), protein oxidation (protein carbonyl, PC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), nitric oxides and glutathione (GSH) in erythrocytes. Results: Fifty-four patients affected by CD were enrolled (17 N-CD, 18 CD-GFD and 19 NRCD; 44 F; age 44 ± 13 years). A significant increase of plasmatic OxS biomarkers (ROS, peroxidated lipids, oxidized proteins, and nitrate concentrations) and decrease of antioxidant species (TAC and GSH levels) were found in NRCD and N-CD compared to CD-GFD. Comparably, a significant direct relationship between the severity of duodenal atrophy, ROS production rates and TBARS was found; conversely, TAC and GSH presented an inverse correlation. Discussion: OxS is involved in CD tissue damage and correlates with the degree of duodenal atrophy. These findings suggest the possible role of OxS biomarkers as indicators of CD activity during the clinical follow-up.
