It has been widely argued that journal metrics are used in assessing publication records on resumes for academic jobs and assessments. Within that debate, two important considerations emerge. Firstly, academics belonging to different career cohorts may have different experiences which are reflected in their recommendations related to targeting and assessing publication records. Secondly, recruitment or assessment expectations that include publishing in highly rated journals may lead to the targeting of a smaller number of high rated publications, with perceived lower rated journal outlets being discouraged. Using an experimental design, an online survey collected data from 1011 academics across management and psychology disciplines in the UK and USA, exploring the association between journal ratings, the number of publications on a resume, and the length of time spent in academia. Analysis indicated that when assessing an academic resume, the discouraging of lower rated journal publications may be dependent on the length of time spent in academia. Specifically, in the context of exactly the same high rated journal publications on a resume, those who had been in academia for 10–20 years were less favorable towards the inclusion of additional low rated journals. The findings contribute to how we view the socialization of institutional influences on career decision making in higher education. The results add to emergent evidence of behavioral responses to the institutional pressures on academic careers, and how individuals at different career stages may be impacted differently. This has implications for the management of academic career progression and academic recruitment processes.

This paper is part of Task 4.2 in Work Package 4 and expands on the work already completed in Work Packages 2 and 3 regarding the analysis of data collected for the four Use Cases of the project and on other Deliverables in WP4. The following research questions guided this deliverable: 1. What are the key factors affecting women’s travel choices? 2. How relevant are they in discriminating between different transport modalities? 3. How different job characteristics, and/or contextual factors, in the transport sectors may affect gender balance and or female employability in different areas? 4. What are the key factors influencing career choices for women in different groups and areas in relation to working in transport? Such document consists of 4 sections: Section 1 sets out a brief definition of fairness as operationalised in the DIAMOND project and a working gender-based definition of women (based on D3.1). Section 2 presents the mixed methods methodology used in this report. First, a scoping literature review adds to the existing literature already analysed in WPs 2 and 3 and Task 4.1, in order to develop concepts which will support the thematic qualitative analysis. Second, the report analyses the relevant socio-economic, demographic and psychological data developed in the project. This is based on both the quantitative (set out in D4.3 and so only briefly summarised here) and the qualitative analysis (which is reported in detail in this deliverable, D4.2). The conclusions of combining these different forms of analysis are then presented. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the qualitative research interviews were generally conducted over the internet. Section 3 considers Questions 1 and 2 (above) on factors affecting women’s travel choices and modal differences. It provides a synopsis of the literature found during the review and a summary of the results of the project’s quantitative and qualitative research related to Use Cases I, II and III, i.e., women as users of public transport, women as users of autonomous vehicles and women as users of bike sharing schemes. Section 4 considers Questions 3 and 4 (above) and investigates women’s needs as employees in the transport sector. It specifically considers the key factors regarding fairness and inclusiveness of employment for women across the transport sector, especially women working on-site and off-site in the railway, freight transport and the logistics sectors. The main evidence presented in this deliverable is based on qualitative thematic analysis (based primarily on the fairness characteristics used in DIAMOND) of interviews with those working in transport sectors (at various levels) in the partner countries of Ireland, UK, Spain and Poland. The qualitative findings set out in this report also help explore issues raised in applying the fairness characteristics and so also inform the wider DIAMOND project. Hence the qualitative data presented here (including the extensive quotations set out in the Appendices) will help to inform the remainder of the project by providing a resource to add to analysis and tool development inthe project. They also crucially, to give voice to the lived experience of the predominantly female people affected by fairness in transport. Summary Findings: The Fairness characteristics (as identified in WP3) are the core of the DIAMOND analysis, and the themes identified in this Deliverable support their appropriateness in the project. Generally, the key findings related to the Research Questions closely followed the Fairness Characteristics.&nbsp

This paper considers the experiences from nine in-depth case studies (undertaken as part of the “WorkAble” project) examining the transitions of (disadvantaged) young people: from compulsory school to further education; from education/vocational training to the labour market; and from unemployment/outside the labour market to employment. It considers two key issues related to using the Capability Approach as a central conceptual guide in the design of in-depth qualitative research. First, how to operationalise the Capability Approach in the methodology, an issue around which there is considerable debate in the literature in particular how to measure capabilities and which capabilities to measure. Second, how to conduct research that is comparable, but is also adaptable to the particular social and institutional contexts of the nine different nations. Specific issues related to the operationalisation of the Capability Approach, encountered when conducting the cross-country in-depth case studies, are highlighted; and debates from the capabilities literature discussed.

First paragraph: Recent government proposals to reform local government into single-tier systems throughout the United Kingdom have assumed that unitary authorities will lead to greater efficiency. However, existing evidence on whether the introduction of unitary authorities will reduce costs for a given level of services often contradicts this. This paper identifies a number of the problems of prior costing of local government reform and analyses a recent report for the Scottish Office estimating the costs and savings of moving to single-tier authorities.

In the UK a significant number of young people do not make successful transitions into further education, training or employment on leaving school, which has been exacerbated further by the current economic crisis. Drawing on in-depth qualitative interview data, this paper examines two Third sector programmes in the UK that can be seen moving away from ‘work-first’ employment activation and focusing instead on promoting the individual capabilities of disadvantaged, unemployed youth in finding work. When this move is considered through a capability approach perspective, questions are raised about the voice of young people, as their aspirations can be limited because of the social contexts in which they live. It is argued that enabling unemployed youth to choose the work that they have reason to value cannot be achieved without taking into account the importance of the external context; and so while young people’s choices may be developed through providing role models etc. it is still a choice shaped and restrained by the context of wider labour markets and education and training opportunities; and the personal and social barriers that inhibit young people from entering work.
