1. QPM Analysis of 205Tl Nuclear Excitations below the Giant Dipole Resonance

Abstract: We analysed our experimental recent findings of the dipole response of the odd-mass stable nucleus 205Tl within the quasi-particle phonon model. Using the phonon basis constructed for the neighbouring 204Hg and wave function configurations for 205Tl consisting of a mixture of quasiparticle ⊗ N-phonon configurations (N=0,1,2), only one group of fragmented dipole excited states has been reproduced at 5.5 MeV in comparison to the experimental distribution which shows a second group at about 5 MeV. The computed dipole transition strengths are mainly of E1 character which could be associated to the pygmy dipole resonance.

Abstract: The decay behavior of low-lying dipole states in 140Ce was investigated exploiting the γ3-setup at the HIγS facility using quasi-monochromatic photon beams. Branching ratios of individual excited states as well as average branching ratios to low-lying states have been extracted using γ – γ coincidence measurements. The comparison of the average branching ratios to QPM calculations shows a remarkable agreement between experiment and theory in the energy range from 5.0 to 8.5 MeV.

Abstract: The method of relative self absorption is based on the technique of nuclear resonance fluorescence measurements. It allows for a model-independent determination of ground-state transition widths, natural level widths, and, consequently, of branching ratios to the ground state for individual excitations. Relative self–absorption experiments have been performed on the nuclei 6Li and 140Ce. In order to investigate the total level width for the 0+1, T = 1 level at 3563 keV in 6Li, a high-precision self-absorption measurement has been performed. In the case of 140Ce, self absorption has been applied for the first time to study decay widths of dipole-excited states in the energy regime of the pygmy dipole resonance.

Abstract: A series of photon scattering experiments has been performed on the double-beta decay partners 76Ge and 76Se, in order to investigate their dipole response up to the neutron separation threshold. Gamma-ray beams from bremsstrahlung at the S-DALINAC and from Compton-backscattering at HIGS have been used to measure absolute cross sections and parities of dipole excited states, respectively. The HIGS data allows for indirect measurement of averaged branching ratios, which leads to significant corrections in the observed excitation cross sections. Results are compared to statistical calculations, to test photon strength functions and the Axel-Brink hypothesis

Abstract: The electric dipole strength distribution in 130Te has been investigated using the method of Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence. The experiments were performed at the Darmstadt High Intensity Photon Setup using bremsstrahlung as photon source and at the High Intensity γ→$\overrightarrow \gamma $-Ray Source, where quasi-monochromatic and polarized photon beams are provided. Average decay properties of 130Te below the neutron separation energy are determined. Comparing the experimental data to the predictions of the statistical model indicate, that nuclear structure effects play an important role even at sufficiently high excitation energies. Preliminary results will be presented.

Abstract: A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited $0^+_1$ state of $^6$Li using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of $\Gamma_{\gamma, 0^+_1 \to 1^+_1} = 8.17(14)_\mathrm{stat.}(11)_\mathrm{syst.} \mathrm{eV}$ provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. Abstract: The nature of $J^{\pi}=1^-$ levels of $^{96}$Zr below the $\beta$-decay $Q_{\beta}$ value of $^{96}$Y has been investigated in high-resolution $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following the $\beta$ decay as well as in a campaign of inelastic photon scattering experiments. Branching ratios extracted from $\beta$ decay allow the absolute $E1$ excitation strength to be determined for levels populated in both reactions. The combined data represents a comprehensive approach to the wavefunction of $1^-$ levels below the $Q_{\beta}$ value, which are investigated in the theoretical approach of the Quasiparticle Phonon Model. This study clarifies the nuclear structure properties associated with the enhanced population of high-lying levels in the $^{96}$Y$_{gs}$ $\beta$ decay, one of the three most important contributors to the high-energy reactor antineutrino spectrum.

Abstract: The transitional nucleus 154Gd was investigated using a combination of a photon scattering experiment and a γγ-coincidence study following the β decay of 154Tb. A novel decay channel from the scissors mode to the band head of the β-band was observed. Its transition strength B(M1; 1sc+ → 0β+) was determined. An IBM-2 calculation reveals a correlation of this decay channel and the shape phase transition between spherical and deformed nuclei.

Abstract: The low-lying $M1$-strength of the open-shell nucleus $^{50}$Cr has been studied with the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence up to 9.7 MeV, using bremsstrahlung at the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator S-DALINAC and Compton backscattered photons at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility between 6 and 9.7 MeV of the initial photon energy. Fifteen $1^{+}$ states have been observed between 3.6 and 9.7 MeV. Following our analysis, the lowest $1^{+}$ state at 3.6 MeV can be considered as an isovector orbital mode with some spin admixture. The obtained results generally match the estimations and trends typical for the scissors-like mode. Detailed calculations within the Skyrme Quasiparticle Random-Phase-Approximation method and the Large-Scale Shell Model justify our conclusions. The calculated distributions of the orbital current for the lowest $1^{+}$-state suggest the schematic view of Lipparini and Stringari (isovector rotation-like oscillations inside the rigid surface) rather than the scissors-like picture of Lo Iudice and Palumbo. The spin M1 resonance is shown to be mainly generated by spin-flip transitions between the orbitals of the $fp$-shell., Comment: Accepted in PRC as a regular article

Abstract: Photon-scattering experiments off the nuclei ⁹⁴Zr and ⁹⁶Zr were performed at the 10-MeV bremsstrahlung facility DHIPS at the super-conducting electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC at Darmstadt. The dipole excitation-strength distributions were determined in an energy range between 2 and 8 MeV, including the 1⁻ quadrupole-octupole coupled Two-Phonon-State and parts of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance. In total 74 transitions in ⁹⁶ Zr were observed and for most of the excited states the spin quantum number could be firmly assigned to J = 1. Calculations within the Quasiparticle Phonon Model show a good agreement.

Abstract: Magnetic dipole transitions in nuclei can offer crucial information on nuclear structure, e.g., on spin-flip processes or on nuclear charge currents. Driven by the need for more comprehensive or more precise data on M1 transitions in nuclei, we have recently tried to advance pre-existing experimental methods to meet the present needs. This contribution reports on the current status of our efforts on three aspects: (i) access of spin-flip M1 strength in radioactive nuclei, (ii) quadrupole-collectivity of the M1 scissors mode, and (iii) highest- precision measurements for strong ground-state M1 excitations.

Abstract: The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. Abstract: The dipole response of $^{76}_{34}$Se in the energy range 4 to 9 MeV has been analyzed using a $(\vec\gamma,{\gamma}')$ polarized photon scattering technique, performed at the High Intensity $\gamma$-Ray Source facility, to complement previous work performed using unpolarized photons. The results of this work offer both an enhanced sensitivity scan of the dipole response and an unambiguous determination of the parities of the observed J=1 states. The dipole response is found to be dominated by $E1$ excitations, and can reasonably be attributed to a pygmy dipole resonance. Evidence is presented to suggest that a significant amount of directly unobserved excitation strength is present in the region, due to unobserved branching transitions in the decays of resonantly excited states. The dipole response of the region is underestimated when considering only ground state decay branches. 15. Fragmentation and systematics of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance in the stable N=82 isotones

Abstract: The low-lying electric dipole (E1) strength in the semi-magic nucleus 136Xe has been measured which finalizes the systematic survey to investigate the so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) in all stable even N=82 isotones with the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence using real photons in the entrance channel. In all cases, a fragmented resonance-like structure of E1 strength is observed in the energy region 5 MeV to 8 MeV. An analysis of the fragmentation of the strength reveals that the degree of fragmentation decreases towards the proton-deficient isotones while the total integrated strength increases indicating a dependence of the total strength on the neutron-to-proton ratio. The experimental results are compared to microscopic calculations within the quasi-particle phonon model (QPM). The calculation includes complex configurations of up to three phonons and is able to reproduce also the fragmentation of the E1 strength which allows to draw conclusions on the damping of the PDR. Calculations and experimental data are in good agreement in the degree of fragmentation and also in the integrated strength if the sensitivity limit of the experiments is taken into account.

Abstract: The nature of the high-lying final levels of the $^{96}$Y$_{gs}$ β decay, one of the three most important contributors to the high-energy reactor antineutrino spectrum, has been investigated in high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy following the β decay as well as in a campaign of inelastic photon scattering experiments. The comprehensive approach establishes 1$^{−}$ levels associated with the Pygmy Dipole Resonance as high-lying final levels in the β decay. Branching ratios extracted from β decay complement photon scattering and allow the absolute E1 excitation strength to be determined for levels populated in both reactions. The combined data represents a comprehensive approach to the wavefunction of the 1− levels below the Qβ value, which are investigated in the Quasiparticle Phonon Model. The calculations reveal that the components populated in β decay contribute only with small amplitudes to the complex wavefunction of these 1$^{−}$ levels. A comparison of the β decay results to data from total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy demonstrates a good agreement between both measurements.

Abstract: Background: The low-lying electric dipole strength provides insights into the parameters of the nuclear equation of state via its connection with the pygmy dipole resonance and nuclear neutron skin thickness. Purpose: The aim was to complement the systematic of the pygmy dipole resonance and first study its behavior across the N = 28 neutron shell closure. Methods: Photon-scattering cross sections of states of Cr-50,Cr-54 were measured up to an excitation energy of 9.7 MeV via the nuclear resonance fluorescence method using gamma-ray beams from bremsstrahlung and Compton backscattering. Results: Transitions strengths, spin and parity quantum number, and average branching ratios for 55 excited states, 44 of which were observed for the first time, were determined. The comparison between the total observed strengths of the isotopes Cr-50,Cr-52,Cr-54 shows a significant increase above the shell closure. Conclusions: The evolution of the pygmy dipole resonance is heavily influenced by the shell structure.

Abstract: The low-lying M 1-strength of the open-shell nucleus 50 Cr has been studied with the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence up to 9.7 MeV, using bremsstrahlung at the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator S-DALINAC and Compton backscattered photons at the High Intensity γ-ray Source (HIγS) facility between 6 and 9.7 MeV of the initial photon energy. Fifteen 1+ states have been observed between 3.6 and 9.7 MeV. Following our analysis, the lowest 1+ state at 3.6 MeV can be considered as an isovector orbital mode with some spin admixture. The obtained results generally match the estimations and trends typical for the scissors mode. Detailed calculations within the Skyrme Quasiparticle Random-Phase-Approximation method and the Large-Scale Shell Model justify our conclusions. The calculated distributions of the orbital current for the lowest 1+ -state suggest the schematic view of Lipparini and Stringari (isovector rotation-like oscillations inside the rigid surface) rather than the scissors-like picture of Lo Iudice and Palumbo. The spin M1 resonance is shown to be mainly generated by spin-flip transitions between the orbitals of the f p-shell.

Abstract: The (J,T)=(1,1) parity doublet in 20 Ne at 11.26 MeV is a good candidate to study parity violation in nuclei. However, its energy splitting is known with insufficient accuracy for quantitative estimates of parity violating effects. To improve on this unsatisfactory situation, nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments using linearly and circularly polarized γ -ray beams were used to determine the energy difference of the parity doublet ΔE=E(1−)−E(1+)=−3.2(±0.7)stat(−1.2+0.6)sys keV and the ratio of their integrated cross sections Is,0(+)/Is,0(−)=29(±3)stat(−7+14)sys . Shell-model calculations predict a parity-violating matrix element having a value in the range 0.46–0.83 eV for the parity doublet. The small energy difference of the parity doublet makes 20 Ne an excellent candidate to study parity violation in nuclear excitations.

Abstract: The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process, β-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Conference Paper

Abstract: The development at ELI-NP of a new laser-based Inverse Compton Scattering gamma beam system, featuring extremely high intensities at very narrow bandwidths, opens new and important opportunities in nuclear science research. Nuclear photonics is undergoing a revival, the gamma beams with unprecedented features delivered at ELI-NP paving the way for high accuracy and detailed nuclear physics studies. A wide range of industrial, homeland security and healthcare applications will also experience an important boost. The combination of nuclear photonics with the technique of Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) allows for the recovery of several physical quantities characterizing the excited nuclear states in a completely model independent way. These observables include the excitation energies, level widths, gamma decay branching ratios, spin quantum numbers, and parities. In the last decade, the NRF technique allowed for the discovery and detailed study of various phenomena in atomic nuclei. Examples are the collective magnetic dipole Scissors Mode in deformed nuclei, quadrupole excitations with mixed proton neutron symmetry, the electric Pygmy Dipole Resonance, octupole coupled excitations, or alpha-cluster states. The present Technical Design Report (TDR) deals with the application of the NRF technique at ELI-NP to study forefront nuclear structure research topics. The document presents some of the physics cases to be investigated and discusses the feasibility of the proposed experiments. The advanced characteristics of the gamma beams available at ELI-NP and the use of high efficiency detection systems will offer a powerful combination, unique in the world, for the investigation of the proposed physics cases. Abstract: The low-lying M1 strength of the open-shell nucleus Cr-50 has been studied with the method of nuclear resonance fluorescence up to 9.7 MeV using bremsstrahlung at the superconducting Darmstadt linear electron accelerator S-DALINAC and Compton backscattered photons at the High Intensity gamma-ray Source (HI gamma S) facility between 6 and 9.7 MeV of the initial photon energy. Fifteen 1(+) states have been observed between 3.6 and 9.7 MeV. Following our analysis the lowest 1(+) state at 3.6 MeV can be considered as an isovector orbital mode with some spin admixture. The obtained results generally match the estimations and trends typical for the scissors-like mode. Detailed calculations within the Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase-approximation method and the large-scale shell model justify our conclusions. The calculated distributions of the orbital current for the lowest 1(+)-state suggest the schematic view of Lipparini and Stringari (isovector rotation-like oscillations inside the rigid surface) rather than the scissors-like picture of Lo Iudice and Palumbo. The spin M1 resonance is shown to be mainly generated by spin-flip transitions between the orbitals of the fp shell.

Abstract: The decay properties of the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) have been investigated in the semi-magic N=82 nucleus Ce-140 using a novel combination of nuclear resonance fluorescence and gamma-gamma coincidence techniques. Branching ratios for transitions to low-lying excited states are determined in a direct and model-independent way both for individual excited states and for excitation energy intervals. Comparison of the experimental results to microscopic calculations in the quasi-particle phonon model exhibits an excellent agreement, supporting the observation that the Pygmy Dipole Resonance couples to the ground state as well as to low-lying excited states. Abstract: Trying to remember something now typically improves your ability to remember it later. However, after watching a video of a simulated bank robbery, participants who verbally described the robber were 25% worse at identifying the robber in a lineup than were participants who instead listed U.S. states and capitals—this has been termed the “verbal overshadowing” effect (Schooler & Engstler-Schooler, 1990). More recent studies suggested that this effect might be substantially smaller than first reported. Given uncertainty about the effect size, the influence of this finding in the memory literature, and its practical importance for police procedures, we conducted two collections of preregistered direct replications (RRR1 and RRR2) that differed only in the order of the description task and a filler task. In RRR1, when the description task immediately followed the robbery, participants who provided a description were 4% less likely to select the robber than were those in the control condition. In RRR2, when the description was delayed by 20 min, they were 16% less likely to select the robber. These findings reveal a robust verbal overshadowing effect that is strongly influenced by the relative timing of the tasks. The discussion considers further implications of these replications for our understanding of verbal overshadowing.

Abstract: The (alpha, alpha' gamma) reaction at E-alpha = 136 MeV was used to study the electric dipole response in the open-shell vibrational nucleus Mo-94 below the neutron-separation threshold. The coincidence experiment has been performed at the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut in Groningen, The Netherlands, exploiting the Big-Bite Spectrometer and an array of large volume High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors. Due to the excellent energy resolution and high selectivity to transitions stemming from the pygmy dipole resonance, singles alpha-scattering cross sections could be determined for individual electric dipole excitations between 4 and 8 MeV. For three of the excited low-lying J(pi) = 1(-) states in Mo-94 a gamma-decay branch into the J(pi) = 2(1)(+) state could be observed. The experiment extends the systematic studies of the pygmy dipole resonance by real-photon scattering (gamma, gamma') experiments and (alpha, alpha' gamma) experiments. Recently, a (gamma, gamma') experiment on Mo-94 was performed at the Darmstadt High-Intensity Photon Setup at the S-DALINAC in Darmstadt, Germany, permitting the comparison of B(E1)up arrow strength distribution and alpha-scattering cross sections.
