Abstract

Phothermal therapy (PTT) is one of the most promising techniques to treat cancer. Finding the ideal PTT agent nanomaterial has remained a challenge and has brought the interest of several researchers. In this work, we report the synthesis of molybdenum oxide (MoOx) nanoparticles (NPs), which exhibit absorption in the biological optical window ~840 nm, by using the laser ablation of solids in liquids (LASL) technique with nanosecond (ns) pulses. A Nd:YAG laser was used to synthesize the NPs in deionized (DI) water, free of surfactants or additives, which were optically characterized by absorption spectroscopy and TEM-EDX microscopy. Semi spherical NPs with a suitable average size and shape for potential use as PTT agents were obtained by laser ablation and ablation + fragmentation. The calculated band gap is 3.1 eV, which corresponds to MoO3. Micro-Raman spectroscopy studies determined that these NPs are composed of amorphous molybdenum oxide hydrates (MoO3 · xH2O).

Abstract

Molybdenum oxides (MoOx) nanoparticles (NPs) have great optical and electronic features that make them suitable for potential applications such as surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and energy systems. However, there are very few papers that report the synthesis of MoOx NPs by using the laser ablation of solids in liquids (LASL) technique and they lack the explanation for the oxidation process. This work reports on the generation of NPs composed of molybdenum trioxide hydrated (MoO3 · xH2O) (x = 1, 2) by using this method and its oxidation due to aging. A picosecond Nd:YAG laser was used and the per pulse laser fluence was varied from 5 to 20 J/cm2. Spherical NPs were obtained with average diameters from 48 to 141 nm, respectively. The absorption evolution of the obtained colloids was characterized by optical absorption spectroscopy, TEM was used to study the MoOx NPs morphology, size and structure and Raman spectroscopy to determine the material chemical composition.

The non-linear zero-differential resistance state (ZDRS) that occurs for highly mobile two-dimensional electron systems in response to a dc bias in the presence of a strong magnetic field applied perpendicular to the electron plane is suppressed and disappears gradually as the magnetic field is tilted away from the perpendicular at fixed filling factor $\nu$. Abstract

This paper deals with the production of orthodimuonium (OM) ($\mu^{+} \mu^{-}$ atom in triplet state) in collisions of high-energy electrons with nuclei or atoms. This reaction was previously studied by Holvik and Olsen [Phys. Rev. D 35, 2124 (1987)] on the basis of a bremsstrahlung mechanism where OM is produced by only one virtual photon. In the present paper we consider a competing three-photon mechanism where the production of OM results from the collision of a photon generated by the electron with two photons emitted by the nucleus. We derive the corresponding spectrum and production rate of OM and show that the three-photon mechanism is the dominant one for heavy atom target., Comment: Revtex style, 10 pages, 5 postscript figures

We present predictions for the exclusive photoproduction of $\Phi$-meson on Proton at large tranfer, where we use a quark-diquark structure model for the proton. Extrapolation from our results to lower tranfers is comparable in magnitude with available data in that range. Abstract

Active Galactic Nuclei are considered as sources of neutrinos, with neutrino energies extending up to 10^{18} eV. It is expected that these highly energetic cosmic neutrinos will be detected by the neutrino telescopes, presently under construction. The detection process is very sensitive to the total muon neutrino cross-section. We examine how the total cross section changes at high energies, by the single production of excited fermions (excited muon and muon-neutrino). For parameters (masses, couplings) of the excited fermions allowed by the experimental constraints, we find that for energies of the incoming muon-neutrino above 100 TeV the cross-section for single production of (excited muon and muon-neutrino) supersedes the standard total cross-section., Comment: 12 pages and 2 figures; typset using revtex; postscript files for the figures provided

Abstract

Objetivos: Conocer la prevalencia del hiperparatiroidismo primario (HPTP) mediante el cribado con la determinación de PTH y calcio iónico, en una muestra poblacional de Guayaquil (Ecuador). Materiales y métodos: Estudio transversal, prospectivo, realizado entre el 1 enero de 2009 y el 30 noviembre de 2014, en 13.860 personas que acudieron a exámenes de control rutinarios. A todos se les determino en suero la hormona paratiroidea (PTH), el calcio iónico, la creatinina sérica y la 25(OH) vitamina D total (VD total). Se confirmó el diagnóstico de HPTP si el nivel de PTH y/o calcio iónico se mantenía elevado al menos en dos ocasiones diferentes. Se excluyeron los casos con elevación de la creatinina sérica, malabsorción, hepatopatías crónicas, insuficiencia de vitamina D, o los que recibían tratamientos que alteran el metabolismo fosfocálcico. Resultados: Se encontró 61 casos con la PTH elevada al menos en dos ocasiones diferentes. Entre estos, 34 presentaban insuficiencia de vitamina D y fueron excluidos del análisis. En 27 casos (4 hombres y 23 mujeres) se confirmó el diagnóstico de HPTP. La edad media en mujeres fue de 64,5±15,4 años y en hombres de 71,3±12,8 años; los valores de PTH medios fueron 115±24,2 pg/ml; de calcio iónico, 5,15±0,4 mg/dl; de VD total, 47,1±20,2 ng/ml; y de creatinina sérica 0,84±0,2 mg/ml; La prevalencia de HPTP corresponde a 2 casos por mil adultos (IC 95%: 1,71-2,18). El mayor incremento en la prevalencia ocurrió en mujeres ≥60 años. Conclusión: En esta muestra, la prevalencia de HPTP es baja comparada con la reportada en series internacionales, siendo mayor en edades avanzadas y en mujeres. Con el cribado propuesto de PTH y calcio iónico encontramos en la mayoría de los casos la forma normocalcémica de HPTP.

Abstract

Mico melanurus is an endangered primate in Paraguay, with most Paraguayan records in the vicinity of Agua Dulce (Defensores del Chaco National Park). We report the first well-documented locality outside of the Agua Dulce/Linea 1 transect, representing the most northeastern record in Paraguay, as well as a new habitat for the species, transitional Pantanal-Cerrado. This note demonstrates the importance of monitoring areas which have been insufficiently studied for conservation purposes.

Item does not contain fulltext, INTRODUCTION: An electronic nose (eNose) device has shown a high specificity and sensitivity to diagnose or rule out tuberculosis (TB) in the past. The aim of this study was to evaluate its performance in patients referred to INERAM. METHODS: Patients aged ≥15 years were included. A history, physical examination, chest radiography (CRX) and microbiological evaluation of a sputum sample were performed in all participants, as well as a 5-minute breath test with the eNose. TB diagnosis was preferably established by the gold standard and compared to the eNose predictions. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess potential risk factors for erroneous classification results by the eNose. RESULTS: 107 participants with signs and symptoms of TB were enrolled of which 91 (85.0%) were diagnosed with TB. The blind eNose predictions resulted in an accuracy of 50%; a sensitivity of 52.3% (CI 95%: 39.6-64.7%) and a specificity of 36.4% (CI 95%: 12.4-68.4%). Risk factors for erroneous classifications by the eNose were older age (multivariate analysis: OR 1.55, 95% CI 1.10-2.18, p = 0.012) and antibiotic use (multivariate analysis: OR 3.19, 95% CI 1.06-9.66, p = 0.040). CONCLUSION: In this study, the accuracy of the eNose to diagnose TB in a tertiary referral hospital was only 50%. The use of antibiotics and older age represent important factors negatively influencing the diagnostic accuracy of the eNose. Therefore, its use should probably be restricted to screening in high-risk communities in less complex healthcare settings.

38. Mapping the delivery of interventions for vaccine-preventable infections in pregnancy in Victoria, Australia

BACKGROUND: Standard care for pregnant women includes universal screening for hepatitis B, and administration of influenza and pertussis vaccination to women and hepatitis B infant vaccination. This study explored how perinatal services relating to the prevention of these vaccine-preventable diseases are delivered to women and their infants in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: Two online surveys investigated service delivery for the prevention of influenza, pertussis and hepatitis B to identify barriers to optimal care during January-June 2021; (1) The Birthing Hospitals Survey captured facility-level information about service delivery for influenza and pertussis vaccination, and interventions to prevent mother-to-child-transmission of chronic hepatitis B (CHB); and (2) The Healthcare Providers Survey captured individual staff perceptions and knowledge in community and hospital settings. RESULTS: Thirty-four hospital unit managers (61%) completed The Birthing Hospitals Survey . One-hundred and forty participants completed The Healthcare Providers Survey . Half of the birthing hospitals provided influenza (50%) and pertussis (53%) vaccinations to pregnant women, and 53% provided an infectious diseases service for women with CHB. Barriers to optimal care delivery included reliance on pregnant woman's self-report to confirm influenza, pertussis vaccination and CHB status, lack of standardised reporting, inadequate workforce training, poor communication between services, and lack of guideline-based clinical care for mothers with CHB and their infants. Three hospitals reported 'stock out' of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG). CONCLUSION: Coordinated and standardised system and clinical care improvements are required to provide equitable care for pregnant women and their infants, including training and education for healthcare providers, improving data capture and communication among health services.

Abstract

Data publications with digital object identifiers (DOI) are best practice for FAIR sharing data. Originally developed with the purpose of providing permanent access to (static) datasets described in scholarly literature, DOI today are more and more assigned to dynamic data. These DOIs are providing a citable and traceable reference of various types of sources (data, software, samples, equipment) and means of rewarding the originators and institutions. As a result of international groups, like the Coalition on Publishing Data in the Earth, Space and Environmental Sciences (COPDESS) and the Enabling FAIR Data project, data with assigned DOIs are fully citable in scholarly literature and many journals require the data underlying a publication to be available – even before accepting an article. Initial metrics for data citation allows data providers to demonstrate the value of the data collected by institutes and individual scientists.This is especially relevant for the geodesy, because, geodesy researchers are often much more involved in operational aspects and data provision than researchers in other fields might be. Therefore, compared to other scientific disciplines, geodesy researchers appear to be producing less “countable scientific” output. Consequently, geodesy data and equipment require a structured and well-documented mechanism which will enable citability, scientific recognition and reward that can be provided by assigning DOI to data and data products.To address these challenges and to identify opportunities for improved coordination and advocacy within the geodetic community, the International Association of Geodesy’s (IAG) Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) has established a Working Group on “Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for Geodetic Data Sets” in 2019. This Working Group is designated to establish best practices and advocate for the consistent implementation of DOIs across all IAG Services and in the greater geodetic community.The main objectives and activities of this working group are:(1) to identify what the community needs from consistent usage of DOIs for data in terms of being able to discover data, permanently cite data, and acknowledge the data providers (2) to develop recommendations for DOI minting strategies for different geodetic data types and granularity across IAG Services (static, dynamic, observational data, data products, combination products, networks) (3) to develop recommendations for a consistent method for data citation across all IAG Services, to support data providers, and to provide quantitative support detailing the use of geodetic datasets and other resources. (4) to develop recommendations for connecting metadata standards for data discovery (e.g. DataCite, ISO19115) with community metadata standards (GeodesyML, Station Logs) This presentation will provide an update on recent topics and first recommendations from the GGOS DOI Working Group.
