The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QL’BIC) is the first bolometric interferometer designed to measure the primordial B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects that is typical of interferometry, both key features in the quest for the faint signal of the primordial B-modes. A unique feature is the so-called “spectral imaging”, i.e., the ability to recover the sky signal in several sub-bands within the physical band during data analysis. This feature provides an in-band spectral resolution of ∆v/v ~ 0.04 that is unattainable by a traditional imager. This is a key tool for controlling the Galactic foregrounds contamination. In this paper, we describe the principles of bolometric interferometry, the current status of the QU BIC experiment and future prospects.

In the quest for the faint primordial B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background, three are the key requirements for any present or future experiment: an utmost sensitivity, excellent control over instrumental systematic effects and over Galactic foreground contamination. Bolometric Interferometry (BI) is a novel technique that matches them all by combining the sensitivity of bolometric detectors, the control of instrumental systematics from interferometry and a software-based, tunable, in-band spectral resolution due to its ability to perform band-splitting during data analysis (spectral imaging). In this paper, we investigate how the spectral imaging capability of BI can help in detecting residual contamination in case an over-simplified model of foreground emission is assumed in the analysis. To mimic this situation, we focus on the next generation of ground-based CMB experiment, CMB-S4, and compare its anticipated sensitivities, frequency and sky coverage with a hypothetical version of the same experiment based on BI, CMB-S4/BI, assuming that lineof-sight (LOS) frequency decorrelation is present in dust emission but is not accounted for during component separation. We show results from a Monte-Carlo analysis based on a parametric component separation method (FGBuster), highlighting how BI has the potential to diagnose the presence of foreground residuals in estimates of the tensor-to-scalar ratio r in the case of unaccounted Galactic dust LOS frequency decorrelation.

Current experiments aimed at measuring the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) use cryogenic detector arrays and cold optical systems to boost the mapping speed of the sky survey. For these reasons, large volume cryogenic systems, with large optical windows, working continuously for years, are needed. Here we report on the cryogenic system of the QUBIC (Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) experiment: we describe its design, fabrication, experimental optimization and validation in the Technological Demonstrator configuration. The QUBIC cryogenic system is based on a large volume cryostat, using two pulse-tube refrigerators to cool at ~3K a large (~1 m^3) volume, heavy (~165kg) instrument, including the cryogenic polarization modulator, the corrugated feedhorns array, and the lower temperature stages; a 4He evaporator cooling at ~1K the interferometer beam combiner; a 3He evaporator cooling at ~0.3K the focal-plane detector arrays. The cryogenic system has been tested and validated for more than 6 months of continuous operation. The detector arrays have reached a stable operating temperature of 0.33K, while the polarization modulator has been operated from a ~10K base temperature. The system has been tilted to cover the boresight elevation range 20 deg -90 deg without significant temperature variations. The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a ground-based experiment that aims to detect B-mode polarisation anisotropies in the CMB at angular scales around the l=100 recombination peak. Systematic errors make ground-based observations of B modes at millimetre wavelengths very challenging and QUBIC mitigates these problems in a somewhat complementary way to other existing or planned experiments using the novel technique of bolometric interferometry. This technique takes advantage of the sensitivity of an imager and the systematic error control of an interferometer. A cold reflective optical combiner superimposes there-emitted beams from 400 aperture feedhorns on two focal planes. A shielding system composedof a fixed groundshield, and a forebaffle that moves with the instrument, limits the impact of local contaminants. The modelling, design, manufacturing and preliminary measurements of the optical components are described in this paper., Part of a series of 8 papers on QUBIC to be published in a special issue of JCAP. - Abstract
The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a ground-based experiment that aims to detect B-mode polarization anisotropies [1] in the CMB at angular scales around the ℓ ≃100 recombination peak. Systematic errors make ground-based observations of B modes at millimetre wavelengths very challenging and QUBIC mitigates these problems in a somewhat complementary way to other existing or planned experiments using the novel technique of bolometric interferometry. This technique takes advantage of the sensitivity of an imager and the systematic error control of an interferometer. A cold reflective optical combiner superimposes the re-emitted beams from 400 aperture feedhorns on two focal planes. A shielding system composed of a fixed groundshield, and a forebaffle that moves with the instrument, limits the impact of local contaminants. The modelling, design, manufacturing and preliminary measurements of the optical components are described in this paper.

- Abstract
Bolometric interferometry is a novel technique that has the ability to perform spectral imaging. A bolometric interferometer observes the sky in a wide frequency band and can reconstruct sky maps in several sub-bands within the physical band in post-processing of the data. This provides a powerful spectral method to discriminate between the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and astrophysical foregrounds. In this paper, the methodology is illustrated with examples based on the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) which is a ground-based instrument designed to measure the B-mode polarization of the sky at millimeter wavelengths. We consider the specific cases of point source reconstruction and Galactic dust mapping and we characterize the point spread function as a function of frequency. We study the noise properties of spectral imaging, especially the correlations between sub-bands, using end-to-end simulations together with a fast noise simulator. We conclude showing that spectral imaging performance are nearly optimal up to five sub-bands in the case of QUBIC.

El objetivo de esta investigación, es brindar un nuevo uso significativo a los equipos acelerográficos propiedad de la Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA), que fueron parte de la antigua red acelerográfica denominada TALULIN, en un estudio que permita predecir el comportamiento estructural de edificios frente a solicitaciones sísmicas mediante modelos matemáticos y compararlo con el que se registra realmente. Para predecir el comportamiento estructural del edificio mediante el uso de registros acelerográficos, se crearon dos modelos: un modelo matemático simplificado y un modelo digital 3D para el que se utilizo el programa de diseño y análisis estructural SAP 2000. Los datos que se introdujeron en el modelo matemático simplificado y en el modelo digital 3D para obtener posiciones específicas y aceleraciones absolutas en los niveles superiores se tomaron del evento sísmico registrado el 30 de mayo de 2019. Como conclusión, la precisión entre el modelo digital y el modelo matemático simplificado fue alta, pero la precisión entre ambos modelos y registros acelerográficos no fue tan alta, pero la tendencia de los resultados y los valores máximos y mínimo de aceleración obtenidos estuvieron cerca del registro acelerográfico. The objective of this research is to provide a meaningful use to the accelerographic equipment owned by Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA), which were part of the old accelerographic network called TALULIN, in a study that allows to predict the structural behavior of buildings in front of seismic requests by using mathematical models and compare it with a real registry. In order to predict the structural behavior of the building through the use of accelerographic records, two models were created: a simplified mathematical model and a 3D digital model for which the SAP 2000 structural analysis and design program was used. The data that was introduced in the simplified mathematical model and in the 3D digital model to obtain specific positions and absolute accelerations at the upper levels were from the recorded seismic event that was reported on May 30 of 2019. As conclusion, the precision obtained between the digital model and the simplified mathematical model was high, but the precision between both models and the accelerographic records was not as high, but the tendency of the results and the maximum and minimum values of acceleration obtained were close to the accelerographic register.

- Abstract
Measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization may reveal the presence of a background of gravitational waves produced during cosmic inflation, providing thus a test of inflationary models. The Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is an experiment designed to measure the CMB polarization. It is based on the novel concept of bolometric interferometry, which combines the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the properties of beam synthesis and control of calibration offered by interferometers. To modulate and extract the input polarized signal of the CMB, QUBIC exploits Stokes polarimetry based on a rotating half-wave plate (HWP). In this work, we illustrate the design of the QUBIC instrument, focusing on the polarization modulation system, and we present preliminary results of beam calibrations and the performance of the HWP rotator at 300 K.

- Abstract
The Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, QUBIC, is an innovative experiment designed to measure the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background and in particular the signature left therein by the inflationary expansion of the Universe. The expected signal is extremely faint, thus extreme sensitivity and systematic control are necessary in order to attempt this measurement. QUBIC addresses these requirements using an innovative approach combining the sensitivity of Transition Edge Sensor cryogenic bolometers, with the deep control of systematics characteristic of interferometers. This makes QUBIC unique with respect to others classical imagers experiments devoted to the CMB polarization. In this contribution we report a description of the QUBIC instrument including recent achievements and the demonstration of the bolometric interferometry performed in lab. QUBIC will be deployed at the observation site in Alto Chorrillos, in Argentina at the end of 2019.

- Abstract
Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is an international ground-based experiment dedicated in the measurement of the polarized fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background. It is based on bolometric interferometry, an original detection technique which combines the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer with the sensitivity of low-temperature incoherent detectors. QUBIC will be deployed in Argentina, at the Alto Chorrillos mountain site near San Antonio de los Cobres, in the Salta Province. The QUBIC detection chain consists in 2048 NbSi transition edge sensors (TESs) cooled to 350 mK.The voltage-biased TESs are read out with time domain multiplexing based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices at 1 K and a novel SiGe application-specific integrated circuit at 60 K allowing to reach an unprecedented multiplexing factor equal to 128. The QUBIC experiment is currently being characterized in the laboratory with a reduced number of detectors before upgrading to the full instrument. I will present the last results of this characterization phase with a focus on the detectors and readout system.

- Abstract
In this paper, we describe QUBIC, an experiment that will observe the polarized microwave sky with a novel approach, which combines the sensitivity of state-of-the-art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. QUBIC’s unique features are the so-called “self-calibration”, a technique that allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects, and its spectral imaging power, i.e., the ability to separate the signal into various sub-bands within each frequency band. QUBIC will observe the sky in two main frequency bands: 150 GHz and 220 GHz. A technological demonstrator is currently under testing and will be deployed in Argentina during 2019, while the final instrument is expected to be installed during 2020.

Collimated outflows (jets) appear to be a ubiquitous phenomenon associated with the accretion of material onto a compact object. Despite this ubiquity, many fundamental physics aspects of jets are still poorly understood and constrained. These include the mechanism of launching and accelerating jets, the connection between these processes and the nature of the accretion flow, and the role of magnetic fields; the physics responsible for the collimation of jets over tens of thousands to even millions of gravitational radii of the central accreting object; the matter content of jets; the location of the region(s) accelerating particles to TeV (possibly even PeV and EeV) energies (as evidenced by γ-ray emission observed from many jet sources) and the physical processes responsible for this particle acceleration; the radiative processes giving rise to the observed multi-wavelength emission; and the topology of magnetic fields and their role in the jet collimation and particle acceleration processes. This chapter reviews the main knowns and unknowns in our current understanding of relativistic jets, in the context of the main model ingredients for Galactic and extragalactic jet sources. It discusses aspects specific to active Galactic nuclei (especially blazars) and microquasars, and then presents a comparative discussion of similarities and differences between them.

- Abstract
QUBIC, the QU Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel forthcoming instrument to measure the B-mode polarization anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The detection of the B-mode signal will be extremely challenging; QUBIC has been designed to address this with a novel approach, namely bolometric interferometry. The receiver cryostat is exceptionally large and cools complex optical and detector stages to 40 K, 4 K, 1 K and 350 mK using two pulse tube coolers, a novel 4He sorption cooler and a double-stage 3He/4He sorption cooler. We discuss the thermal and mechanical design of the cryostat, modelling and thermal analysis, and laboratory cryogenic testing

- Abstract
QUBIC (the Q&U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is a ground-based experiment which seeks to improve the current constraints on the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. It exploits the unique technique, among Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, of bolometric interferometry, combining together the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects typical of interferometers. QUBIC will perform sky observations in polarization, in two frequency bands centered at 150 and 220 GHz, with two kilopixel focal plane arrays of NbSi Transition-Edge Sensors (TES) cooled down to 350 mK. A subset of the QUBIC instrument, the so called QUBIC Technological Demonstrator (TD), with a reduced number of detectors with respect to the full instrument, will be deployed and commissioned before the end of 2018. The voltage-biased TES are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing and an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. This MUX factor is reached with two-stage multiplexing: a traditional one exploiting Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1 K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K. The former provides a MUX factor of 32, while the latter provides a further 4. Each TES array is composed of 256 detectors and read out with four modules of 32 SQUIDs and two ASICs. A custom software synchronizes and manages the readout and detector operation, while the TES are sampled at 780 Hz (100kHz/128 MUX rate). In this work we present the experimental characterization of the QUBIC TES arrays and their multiplexing readout chain, including time constant, critical temperature, and noise properties.

In this paper we describe QUBIC, an experiment that takes up the challenge posed by the detection of primordial gravitational waves with a novel approach, that combines the sensitivity of state-of-the art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. The so-called 'self-calibration' is a technique deeply rooted in the interferometric nature of the instrument and allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects. The first module of QUBIC is a dual band instrument (150 GHz and 220 GHz) that will be deployed in Argentina during Fall 2018.

Antecedentes: Uno de los retos en endodoncia es la obturación de los conductos con ápices abiertos permitiendo su sellado, evitando la microfiltración y la salida del material obturador hacia los tejidos periapicales, por esta razón actualmente se utilizan materiales como el Mineral Trióxido Agregado (MTA) para proporcionar un tope apical que garantice el sellado del conducto radicular evitando la contaminación bacteriana. Objetivos: Comparar la microfiltración apical in vitro del MTA de dos casas comerciales con y sin hidróxido de calcio en dientes monorradiculares con ápices amplios. Materiales y métodos: Para este estudio se utilizaron 80 dientes humanos monorradiculares extraídos, divididos en 4 grupos, MTA "Proroot" con y sin hidróxido de calcio y MTA "Angelus" con y sin hidróxido de calcio, sumergidos en una sustancia buffer simulando el periápice y posteriormente se realizó coloración con tinta china y evaluación de la microfiltración por medio del proceso de diafanación. Resultados: En el estudio todos los grupos presentaron algún grado de microfiltración, siendo los de mayor frecuencia los dientes obturados con MTA Angelus sin hidróxido de calcio y el que menos presentó fueron los obturados con MTA Proroot sin hidróxido de calcio. Conclusiones: Tanto el MTA Angelus como el MTA Proroot se pueden usar como barrera apical sin necesidad de usar hidróxido calcio, sin embargo es necesario afinar las técnicas y procedimientos en futuros estudios que permitan la toma de decisiones clínicas. Background: One of the challenges in endodontics is root canal filling with open and wide apex, which allowing it to seal, preventing microleakage and the output of the filling material into periapical tissues, therefore currently used materials such as Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) to provide an apical stop to ensure the sealing of the root canal to avoid bacterial contamination. Objectives: To compare the in vitro apical microleakage of MTA in two trading houses with and without calcium hydroxide in teeth with apical single-rooted wide. Materials and methods: For this study 80 extracted human teeth were used single-rooted divided into 4 groups, MTA "ProRoot" with and without calcium hydroxide and MTA Angelus with and without calcium hydroxide, immersed in a buffer substance and simulating periapical subsequently made with India ink staining and evaluation of microleakage through diafanación process. Results: In the study all groups showed some degree of microleakage, the most frequent being filled teeth with MTA Angelus without calcium hydroxide and the least presented were filled with MTA ProRoot without calcium hydroxide. Conclusions: Both the MTA and the MTA Angelus ProRoot can be used as apical barrier without the use of calcium hydroxide, however it is necessary to refine the techniques and procedures in future studies to clinical decision making.

Correlations between the radio and X-ray bands in the hard state of black hole X-ray binaries (BHBs) have led to the discovery of the Fundamental Plane of black hole accretion, linking accretion-driven radiative attributes to black hole mass. Although this discovery has led to new constraints on radiative efficiencies, there is still significant degeneracy in terms of understanding the governing physics. I present several new results exploring the processes driving the Fundamental Plane over the black hole mass range. These include the first ever homogeneous fits of sources at approximately the same Eddington luminosity but millions of times different in mass, which I focus on for this proceeding article.

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA. © 2011 The Author(s).

In this paper we review and discuss some of the intriguing properties of the Galactic Center supermassive black hole candidate Sgr A*. Of all possible black hole sources, the event horizon of Sgr A*, subtends the largest angular scale on the sky. It is therefore a prime candidate to study and image plasma processes in strong gravity and it even allows imaging of the shadow cast by the event horizon. Recent mm-wave VLBI and radio timing observations as well as numerical GRMHD simulations now have provided several breakthroughs that put Sgr A* back into the focus. Firstly, VLBI observations have now measured the intrinsic size of Sgr A* at multiple frequencies, where the highest frequency measurements have approached the scale of the black hole shadow. Moreover, measurements of the radio variability show a clear time lag between 22 GHz and 43 GHz. The combination of size and timing measurements, allows one to actually measure the flow speed and direction of magnetized plasma at some tens of Schwarzschild radii. This data strongly support a moderately relativistic outflow, consistent with an accelerating jet model. This is compared to recent GRMHD simulation that show the presence of a moderately relativistic outflow coupled to an accretion flow Sgr A*. Further VLBI and timing observations coupled to simulations have the potential to map out the velocity profile from 5-40 Schwarzschild radii and to provide a first glimpse at the appearance of a jet-disk system near the event horizon. Future submm-VLBI experiments would even be able to directly image those processes in strong gravity and directly confirm the presence of an event horizon., invited talk to appear in "Jets on All Scales", IAU Symposium 275, G.E.
