This article, collaboratively written by the presidents of the National Latina/o Psychological Association (NLPA), presents leadership as conceptualized and practiced in NLPA. We first identify key leadership constructs in the available literature as well as relevant cultural values, describe liderazgo (leadership) through cultural lenses, and articulate the connections to counseling psychology and the social justice underpinnings that have guided NLPA’s formation and development. We then present a number of events and decisions to illustrate how we have operationalized these organizing principles in both the daily management and long-term goals of NLPA. We conclude with a discussion of the future paths and possible directions in the next decade for the organization.

This article provides a summary of the Major Contribution on the Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations (Asian American Psychological Association, The Association of Black Psychologists, National Latina/o Psychological Association, Society of Indian Psychologists, and American Psychological Association Division 45) and their connections to counseling psychology and the Society of Counseling Psychology. An overview and highlights of common themes are provided and seven recommendations for future connections are explored. This article is one of seven articles that are part of a special issue of The Counseling Psychologist focused on the relationship between the five major Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations (EMPAs) and the Society of Counseling Psychology.

This article addresses the re-founding of the National Hispanic Psychological Association into the National Latina/o Psychological Association. A brief history is provided, followed by current status and resources, connections to counseling psychology, and implications for the Society of Counseling Psychology and for the future of the National Latina/o Psychological Association. In this rejoinder the authors respond to the three reactions to the major contribution, "Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations: Connections to Counseling Psychology," provided by Chung and Wu, Neville, Flores, and Dobson, and Yakushko, Wang, and Warrior. In their thoughtful reactions, these current and past leaders of the Society of Counseling Psychology (SCP) furthered the dialogue and offered additional insights into the relationship between Ethnic Minority Psychological Associations (EMPAs) and SCP. In the authors' rejoinder they focus on (a) the commonalities across these reactions and (b) the unique contribution of each reaction. Each of the reactions offered a new framework (or analogy) for how the EMPAs and SCP can work together to advance a social justice agenda.

This article provides the introduction, background and rationale for the Major Contribution focused on five national ethnic minority psychological associations: the Asian American Psychological Association, The Association of Black Psychologists, the National Latina/o Psychological Association, the Society of Indian Psychologists, and the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45 of the American Psychological Association). The first five articles focus on each of the five major ethnic minority psychological associations and their relationship to the specialty of counseling psychology in general and, more specifically, to the largest professional organization of counseling psychologists, the Society of Counseling Psychology, Division 17 of the American Psychological Association. In the final article, we summarize general trends and make recommendations. In this introductory article, we (a) describe our rationale for the Major Contribution, (b) provide a brief history of counseling psychology's growing commitment to an inclusive multicultural psychology, and (c) conclude with a brief description of the articles and authors included in the Major Contribution. Psychological research has shown the detrimental effects that overt heterosexism have on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) clients and on the psychotherapeutic relationship. However, the effects of subtle forms of discrimination, specifically sexual orientation microaggressions, have on LGBQ clients and the therapeutic relationship have not been addressed. This study used qualitative methodology to explore the phenomenon of sexual orientation microaggressions with 16 self-identified LGBQ psychotherapy clients. Results of this study support the existence of sexual orientation microaggressions within the therapeutic environment and provide a descriptive account of 7 sexual orientation microaggression themes, channels of microaggression communication, and the impact microaggressions have on therapy and clients. A group designed to address social justice issues for Asian international students within a counseling training program is described. The authors implemented such a group that led to critical consciousness, accountability, and action spurred by culturally sensitive empowerment. Such a group may be desirable for training programs that want to accept, retain, and graduate international counseling graduate students.

Previous research concerning the reporting of race and ethnicity in empirical research was replicated and expanded. One thousand two hundred sixty-eight studies over the years 1990-2007 were examined in the following journals: "Career Development Quarterly," "Journal of Career Assessment," "Journal of Career Development," and "Journal of Vocational Behavior." Results indicated that 62% of studies from 1990 to 1999 and 46% from 2000 to 2007 do not report race or ethnicity at all. A racial/ethnic profile of the research participants over the 18-year period was constructed and compared with the U.S. population for that time period, as well as to previous research. The authors provide implications and suggestions for future research. (Contains 1 table.)

Prepracticum service-learning (PPSL) was investigated through a qualitative case study of a counselor education program. Participants were PPSL instructors, coordinators, and alumni of the selected program. As it relates to the counselor education program under study, this article illustrates perceived effects of PPSL on student counselors' overall development and comparisons of PPSL and practicum training. Implications for counselor education are addressed.

Extending previous research (E. A. Delgado-Romero, N. Galvan, P. Maschino, & M. Rowland, 2005) regarding race and ethnicity in counseling and counseling psychology, this article examined how race and ethnicity were reported and used in empirical studies published in diversity-focused journals from 1990 to 2007. The results are discussed and compared with previous findings. (Contains 4 tables.)

The factor structure of the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity (MIBI) was assessed in a sample of 272 African American college students using confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses. The fit indices from the confirmatory analyses did not support the seven-factor first-order model or two alternative higher-order models suggested by the developers, but yielded numerous recommendations for modifications. A post hoc exploratory factor analysis indicated that MIBI items were best represented by a five-factor structure. (Contains 1 figure, 5 tables and 1 note.)

Research productivity was examined across 5 highly nominated multicultural psychology journals. This yielded a ranking of 40 highly productive institutions and individuals between 1994 and 2007. The results are potentially useful in beginning to track trends in the publication of multicultural psychology studies in research journals. Methodological and interpretational limitations are discussed. (Contains 4 tables.)

This article presents an overview of the health disparities problem that exists among individuals from ethnic minority and low-income backgrounds and their majority counterparts. The argument is made that the involvement of counseling psychologists in addressing this health disparities problem presents an opportunity for the field to remain true to its commitment to prevention, multiculturalism, and social justice while becoming more competitive in the health care and health promotion fields. This article highlights the prevalence of health disparities and identifies the primary factors contributing to these disparities. In addition, the roles and approaches that counseling psychologists can adopt to help alleviate this problem are specified.

The state of Georgia has experienced dramatic growth in the Latino/a population during the past decade, with a third of the new Latino/a population younger than the age of 18. Consequently, school systems were not prepared for the challenges posed by a Spanish-speaking immigrant population. The authors organized an interdisciplinary conference to holistically address the issues facing school counselors in their work with the emerging Latino/a population. Implications for other states dealing with an emerging Latino/a population are discussed. (Contains 2 notes.)

This article deals with controversial issues in recruitment of Latino/a faculty in higher education in the United States. The authors present a hypothetical faculty hiring case scenario that they follow throughout the manuscript. Through this case scenario, they examine aspects of Latino/a identity, Latino/a demographics in higher education, and the interaction of Latino/a faculty dimensions that interact with faculty search committee expectations. They highlight implications for hiring and retention. (Contains 4 notes.)

The Great Lakes Regional Conference on Counseling Psychology is the only conference to continuously fulfill the 1987 mandate issued by Division 17 for regional counseling conferences. The rationale for regional conferences is reviewed, and the 18-year history of the Great Lakes Regional Conference is examined. The authors conclude by noting the strengths and limitations of regional conferences and recommend that the Society of Counseling Psychology reconsider the issue of regional conferences in counseling psychology. We are pleased to have our work be included alongside the work of our colleagues Bryant-Davis and Ocampo (2005 [this issue]) and Utsey, Gernat, and Hammar (2005 [this issue]) in this issue of "The Counseling Psychologist." Similarly we are thankful for the helpful and informative reactions of J. Manuel Casas (2005 [this issue]), Lisa Spanierman and V. Paul Poteat (2005 [this issue]), Michael D?Andrea (2005 [this issue]), Jay Wade (2005 [this issue]), and Janis Sanchez-Hucles and Nneka Jones (2005 [this issue]). When race and ethnicity are discussed in the counseling and counseling psychology literature, the endeavor can often be contentious and defensive (e.g., Weinrach & Thomas, 2002), so we appreciated these thoughtful and productive reactions to our work. Consequently we feel free to consider and expand upon the comments of reactors in the spirit of a shared commitment to confronting the continuing challenge of race and ethnicity in counseling and counseling psychology research. The reactants all agree on a need for counseling psychology to respond with commitment to the task of moving forward in addressing race and ethnicity in research as a means of promoting social justice. We will address the major points highlighted by each author.

This article examined 796 empirical studies published in the "Journal of Counseling Psychology," the "Journal of Counseling and Development," and "The Counseling Psychologist" from 1990 to 1999 and found that only 457 (57%) reported racial and ethnic characteristics of research participants. From this data, an overall picture was generated of the racial and ethnic composition of counseling and counseling psychology research participants: 78.2% White, 5.8% Asian American, 6.7% African American, 6.6% Hispanic, 0.9% Native American, and 0.1% multiracial. Compared to the overall U.S. population, Whites and Asian Americans were overrepresented, and African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans were underrepresented. There was limited information about how researchers gathered participants race and ethnicity information and on factors that might inform participantsexperience as racial and ethnic beings (e.g., racial and ethnic identity, generation status, acculturation). Findings are compared and contrasted with previous reviews related to issues of race and ethnicity in counseling research.

This article provides a case history of the development of Hispanic Student Organizations (HSO) by examining the contextual factors (e.g., demographic, historical, organizational) that impacted HSO development at the University of Florida from the 1970s to 2003. We trace the formation of HSO of cultural, professional, and Greek affiliations. We examine institutional involvement and some recent hate crimes directed at HSO at the university and conclude with future directions and research implications.

Presents preliminary competencies for faculty advisors of Hispanic student organizations; the competencies are presented, defined, and illustrated with examples. Concludes with implications for research. (EV)
