Abstract

High-redshift radio(-loud) galaxies (H$z$RGs) are massive galaxies with powerful radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and serve as beacons for protocluster identification. However, the interplay between H$z$RGs and the large-scale environment remains unclear. To understand the connection between H$z$RGs and the surrounding obscured star formation, we investigated the overdensity and spatial distribution of submillimeter-bright galaxies (SMGs) in the field of 4C\,23.56, a well-known H$z$RG at $z=2.48$. We used SCUBA-2 data ($\sigma\,{\sim}\,0.6$\,mJy) to estimate the $850\,{\rm \mu m}$ source number counts and examine the radial and azimuthal overdensities of the $850\,{\rm \mu m}$ sources in the vicinity of the H$z$RG. The angular distribution of SMGs is inhomogeneous around the H$z$RG 4C\,23.56, with fewer sources oriented along the radio jet. We also find a significant overdensity of bright SMGs (${\rm S}_{850\rm\,\mu m}\geq5\,$mJy). Faint and bright SMGs exhibit different spatial distributions. The former are concentrated in the core region, while the latter prefer the outskirts of the H$z$RG field. High-resolution observations show that the seven brightest SMGs in our sample are intrinsically bright, suggesting that the overdensity of bright SMGs is less likely due to the source multiplicity., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables, accepted to A&A

Abstract

Studies of surface brightness fluctuations in the intracluster medium (ICM) present an indirect probe of turbulent properties such as the turbulent velocities, injection scales, and the slope of the power spectrum of fluctuations towards smaller scales. With the advancement of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) studies and surveys relative to X-ray observations, we seek to investigate surface brightness fluctuations in a sample of SPT-SZ clusters which also have archival \textit{XMM-Newton} data. Here we present a pilot study of two typical clusters in that sample: SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and SPT-CLJ0638-5358. We infer injection scales larger than 500 kpc in both clusters and Mach numbers $\approx 0.5$ in SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and Mach numbers $\approx 0.6 - 1.6$ in SPT-CLJ0638-5358, which has a known shock. We find hydrostatic bias values for $M_{500}$ less than 0.2 for SPT-CLJ0232-4421 and less than 0.1 for SPT-CLJ0638-5358. These results show the importance to assess its quantitative values via a detailed multiwavelength approach and suggest that the drivers of turbulence may occur at quite larger scales., Comment: Accepted to ApJ; 34 pages, 23 figures, and 14 tables

Abstract

We present a multi-wavelength study of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of the 95 most massive galaxy clusters selected from South Pole Telescope (SPT) Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) survey. Our sample spans a redshift range of 0.3 < z < 1.7, and is complete with optical spectroscopy from various ground-based observatories, as well as ground and space-based imaging from optical, X-ray and radio wavebands. At z~0, previous studies have shown a strong correlation between the presence of a low-entropy cool core and the presence of star-formation and a radio-loud AGN in the central BCG. We show for the first time that a central entropy threshold for star formation persists out to z~1. The central entropy (measured in this work at a radius of 10 kpc) below which clusters harbor star-forming BCGs is found to be as low as $K_\mathrm{10 ~ kpc} = 35 \pm 4$ keV cm$^2$ at z < 0.15 and as high as $K_\mathrm{10 ~ kpc} = 52 \pm 11$ keV cm$^2$ at z~1. We find only marginal (~1$\sigma$) evidence for evolution in this threshold. In contrast, we do not find a similar high-z analog for an entropy threshold for feedback, but instead measure a strong evolution in the fraction of radio-loud BCGs in high-entropy cores as a function of redshift. This could imply that the cooling-feedback loop was not as tight in the past, or that some other fuel source like mergers are fueling the radio sources more often with increasing redshift, making the radio luminosity an increasingly unreliable proxy for radio jet power. We also find that our SZ-based sample is missing a small (~4%) population of the most luminous radio sources ($\nu L_{\nu} > 10^{42}$ erg/s), likely due to radio contamination suppressing the SZ signal with which these clusters are detected., Comment: 22 pages. 10 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

The galaxy cluster Zwicky 3146 is a sloshing cool core cluster at $z{=}0.291$ that in SZ imaging does not appear to exhibit significant pressure substructure in the intracluster medium (ICM). We perform a surface brightness fluctuation analysis via Fourier amplitude spectra on SZ (MUSTANG-2) and X-ray (XMM-Newton) images of this cluster. These surface brightness fluctuations can be deprojected to infer pressure and density fluctuations from the SZ and X-ray data, respectively. In the central region (Ring 1, $r < 100^{\prime\prime} = 440$ kpc, in our analysis) we find fluctuation spectra that suggest injection scales around 200 kpc ($\sim 140$ kpc from pressure fluctuations and $\sim 250$ kpc from density fluctuations). When comparing the pressure and density fluctuations in the central region, we observe a change in the effective thermodynamic state from large to small scales, from isobaric (likely due to the slow sloshing) to adiabatic (due to more vigorous motions). By leveraging scalings from hydrodynamical simulations, we find an average 3D Mach number $\approx0.5$. Abstract

Mechanical feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) is thought to be the dominant feedback mechanism quenching cooling flows and star formation in galaxy cluster cores. However, the mechanisms by which AGN couple to the intracluster medium (ICM) are not well understood. The nature of pressure supporting the cavities is not known. Using the MUSTANG-2 instrument on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), we aimed to measure thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect signals associated with the X-ray cavities in MS0735.6+7421, a moderate mass cluster hosting one of the most energetic AGN outbursts known. We use these measurements to infer the level of non-thermal sources of pressure, such as magnetic fields and turbulence, as well as relativistic and cosmic ray components, supporting the cavities. We used preconditioned gradient descent to fit a model for the cluster, cavities, and central point source directly to the time ordered data of the MUSTANG-2 signal. We use this model to probe the thermodynamic state of the cavities. We have shown that the SZ signal associated with the cavities is suppressed compared to the expectations for a thermal plasma with the temperature $\sim$few tens keV. The smallest value of the suppression factor $f$ that is consistent with the data is $\sim$0.4, lower than inferred in earlier work. Larger values of $f$ are possible once the contribution of the cocoon shock surrounding the bubbles is taken into account. The baseline model with this particular geometrical setup yields best-fitting value f~0.5, which at face value implies a mix of thermal and non-thermal pressure support. Larger values of $f$ (up to 1, i.e. no tSZ signal from the bubbles) are still possible when allowing for variations in the line-of-sight geometry., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We present stellar mass fractions and composite luminosity functions (LFs) for a sample of \Ncl\ clusters from the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS) at a redshift range of $0.951 \leq z \leq 1.43$. Using SED fitting of optical and deep mid-infrared photometry, we establish the membership of objects along the lines-of-sight to these clusters and calculate the stellar masses of member galaxies. We find stellar mass fractions for these clusters largely consistent with previous works, including appearing to display a negative correlation with total cluster mass. We measure a composite $3.6~\mathrm{\mu m}$ LF down to $m^*+2.5$ for all 12 clusters. Fitting a Schechter function to the LF, we find a characteristic $3.6~\mathrm{\mu m}$ magnitude of $m^*=19.83\pm0.12$ and faint-end slope of $\alpha=-0.81\pm0.10$ for the full sample at a mean redshift of $\bar{z} = 1.18$. We also divide the clusters into high- and low-redshift bins at $\bar{z}=1.29$ and $\bar{z}=1.06$ respectively and measure a composite LF for each bin. We see a small, but statistically significant evolution in $m^*$ and $\alpha$ -- consistent with passive evolution -- when we study the joint fit to the two parameters, which is probing the evolution of faint cluster galaxies at $z\sim1$. Abstract

The properties of galaxy clusters as a function of redshift can be utilized as an important cosmological tool. We present initial results from a program of follow-up observations of the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) in high redshift galaxy clusters detected at infrared wavelengths in the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS). Using typical on-source integration times of 3-4 hours per cluster, MUSTANG2 on the Green Bank Telescope was able to measure strong detections of SZE decrements and statistically significant masses on 14 out of 16 targets. On the remaining two, weaker (3.7 sigma) detections of the SZE signal and strong upper limits on the masses were obtained. In this paper we present masses and pressure profiles of each target and outline the data analysis used to recover these quantities. Of the clusters with strong detections, three show significantly flatter pressure profiles while, from the MUSTANG2 data, five others show signs of disruption at their cores. However, outside of the cores of the clusters, we were unable to detect significant amounts of asymmetry. Finally, there are indications that the relationship between optical richness used by MaDCoWS and SZE-inferred mass may be significantly flatter than indicated in previous studies., Comment: Accepted by ApJ ; 20 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present results from simultaneous modeling of high angular resolution GBT/MUSTANG-2 90 GHz Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) measurements and XMM-XXL X-ray images of three rich galaxy clusters selected from the HSC-SSP Survey. The combination of high angular resolution SZE and X-ray imaging enables a spatially resolved multi-component analysis, which is crucial to understand complex distributions of cluster gas properties. The targeted clusters have similar optical richnesses and redshifts, but exhibit different dynamical states in their member galaxy distributions: a single-peaked cluster, a double-peaked cluster, and a cluster belonging to a supercluster. A large-scale residual pattern in both regular Compton-parameter $y$ and X-ray surface brightness distributions is found in the single-peaked cluster, indicating a sloshing mode. The double-peaked cluster shows an X-ray remnant cool core between two SZE peaks associated with galaxy concentrations. The temperatures of the two peaks reach $\sim20-30$ keV in contrast to the cool core component of $\sim2$ keV, indicating a violent merger. The main SZE signal for the supercluster is elongated along a direction perpendicular to the major axis of the X-ray core, suggesting a minor merger before core passage. The $S_X$ and $y$ distributions are thus perturbed at some level, regardless of the optical properties. We find that the integrated Compton $y$ parameter and the temperature for the major merger are boosted from those expected by the weak-lensing mass and those for the other two clusters show no significant deviations, which is consistent with predictions of numerical simulations., Comment: 36 pages, 25 figures, 5 tables; accepted for the publication in MNRAS

Abstract

The galaxy cluster Zwicky 3146 is a sloshing cool core cluster at $z=0.291$ that in X-ray imaging does not appear to exhibit significant pressure substructure in the intracluster medium (ICM). The published $M_{500}$ values range between $3.88^{+0.62}_{-0.58}$ to $22.50 \pm 7.58 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, where ICM-based estimates with reported errors $<20$\% suggest that we should expect to find a mass between $6.53^{+0.44}_{-0.44} \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ (from Planck, with an $8.4\sigma$ detection) and $8.52^{+1.77}_{-1.47} \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$ (from ACT, with a $14\sigma$ detection). This broad range of masses is suggestive that there is ample room for improvement for all methods. Here, we investigate the ability to estimate the mass of Zwicky 3146 via the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect with data taken at 90 GHz by MUSTANG-2 to a noise level better than $15\ \mu$K at the center, and a cluster detection of $104\sigma$. We derive a pressure profile from our SZ data which is in excellent agreement with that derived from X-ray data. From our SZ-derived pressure profiles, we infer $M_{500}$ and $M_{2500}$ via three methods -- $Y$-$M$ scaling relations, the virial theorem, and hydrostatic equilibrium -- where we employ X-ray constraints from \emph{XMM-Newton} on the electron density profile when assuming hydrostatic equilibrium. Depending on the model and estimation method, our $M_{500}$ estimates range from $6.23 \pm 0.59$ to $10.6 \pm 0.95 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, where our estimate from hydrostatic equilibrium, is $8.29^{+1.93}_{-1.24}$ ($\pm 19.1$\% stat) ${}^{+0.74}_{-0.68}$ ($\pm 8.6$\% sys, calibration) $\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$. Our fiducial mass, derived from a $Y$-$M$ relation is $8.16^{+0.44}_{-0.54}$ ($\pm 5.5$\% stat) ${}^{+0.46}_{-0.43}$ ($\pm 5.5$\% sys, $Y$-$M$) ${}^{+0.59}_{-0.55}$ ($\pm 7.0$\% sys, cal.) $\times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures; submitted to ApJ

Abstract

We present stellar mass fractions and composite luminosity functions (LFs) for a sample of 12 clusters from the Massive and Distant Clusters of WISE Survey (MaDCoWS) in the redshift range 0.951 ≤ z ≤ 1.43. Using spectral energy distribution fitting of optical and deep mid-infrared photometry, we establish the membership of objects along the lines of sight to these clusters and calculate the stellar masses of member galaxies. This allows us to calculate the stellar mass of the clusters much more precisely than in previous works. We find stellar mass fractions for these clusters largely consistent with previous works, and an apparent negative correlation with total cluster mass. We measure a composite 3.6 ÎĽ m LF down to m * + 2.5 for all 12 clusters. Fitting a Schechter function to the LF, we find a characteristic 3.6 ÎĽ m magnitude of m * = 19.83 ± 0.12 and faint-end slope of α = âˆ'0.81 ± 0.10 for the full sample at a mean redshift of z ÂŻ = 1.18. We also divide the clusters into high- and low-redshift bins at z ÂŻ = 1.29 and z ÂŻ = 1.06 , respectively, and measure a composite LF for each bin. We see a small, but statistically significant, evolution in m * and α â€"consistent with passive evolutionâ€"when we study the joint fit to the two parameters, which is probing the evolution of faint cluster galaxies at z ∼ 1. Abstract

We present results from simultaneous modelling of high angular resolution GBT/MUSTANG-2 90 GHz Sunyaev–Zel'dovich effect (SZE) measurements and XMM-XXL X-ray images of three rich galaxy clusters selected from the HSC-SSP Survey. The combination of high angular resolution SZE and X-ray imaging enables a spatially resolved multicomponent analysis, which is crucial to understand complex distributions of cluster gas properties. The targeted clusters have similar optical richnesses and redshifts, but exhibit different dynamical states in their member galaxy distributions: a single-peaked cluster, a double-peaked cluster, and a cluster belonging to a supercluster. A large-scale residual pattern in both regular Compton-parameter y and X-ray surface brightness distributions is found in the single-peaked cluster, indicating a sloshing mode. The double-peaked cluster shows an X-ray remnant cool core between two SZE peaks associated with galaxy concentrations. The temperatures of the two peaks reach ∼20–30 keV in contrast to the cool core component of ∼2 keV, indicating a violent merger. The main SZE signal for the supercluster is elongated along a direction perpendicular to the major axis of the X-ray core, suggesting a minor merger before core passage. The SX and y distributions are thus perturbed at some level, regardless of the optical properties. We find that the integrated Compton y parameter and the temperature for the major merger are boosted from those expected by the weak-lensing mass and those for the other two clusters show no significant deviations, which is consistent with predictions of numerical simulations. Abstract

A fetal posterior cerebral artery (FPCA) is an anatomic variant in which the posterior cerebral artery is an embryological derivative of the internal carotid artery. Although most cases of ischemic strokes in patients with FPCAs involve embolic infarcts, emergent large vessel occlusion of a FPCA is extremely rare. We present two cases of successful endovascular intervention for emergent occlusion of a FPCA, one of which is only the second reported case of a mechanical thrombectomy of a FPCA.
