1. Intercavity polariton slows down dynamics in strongly coupled cavities

Abstract

Band engineering stands as an efficient route to induce strongly correlated quantum many-body phenomena. Besides inspiring analogies among diverse physical fields, tuning on demand the group velocity is highly attractive in photonics because it allows unconventional flows of light. $\Lambda$-schemes offer a route to control the propagation of light in a lattice-free configurations, enabling exotic phases such as slow-light and allowing for highly optical non-linear systems. Here, we realize room-temperature intercavity Frenkel polaritons excited across two strongly coupled cavities. We demonstrate the formation of a tuneable heavy-polariton, akin to slow light, appearing in the absence of a periodic in-plane potential. Our photonic architecture based on a simple three-level scheme enables the unique spatial segregation of photons and excitons in different cavities and maintains a balanced degree of mixing between them. This unveils a dynamical competition between many-body scattering processes and the underlying polariton nature which leads to an increased fluorescence lifetime. The intercavity polariton features are further revealed under appropriate resonant pumping, where we observe suppression of the polariton fluorescence intensity., Comment: 8+ 4 pages

Abstract

Frenkel polaritons, hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, offer promises for the designing of new opto-electronic devices. However, their technological implementations are hindered by sensitivity to imperfections. Topology has raised as a way to circumvent defects and fabrication limitations. Here, we propose a lattice of cavities to realize the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model (SSH) for topological Frenkel polaritons. By engineering the configuration of the cavities we demonstrate that the SSH topological and trivial phases can be accessed, which we unravel by complementary classical and quantum theories. We demonstrate the polariton edge state robustness under defects and the broadening of the photon and exciton lines. Our findings propose a realistic yet simple experimental setup to realize topological room temperature polaritons., Comment: 9 pages and 9 figures

Abstract

Organic polaritons resulting from the strong hybridisation between photons and matter excitations have arisen as a suitable platform to device light-matter technological interfaces at room temperature. Despite their inherent complexity, organic polaritons are commonly regarded as coherent light-matter excitations that can be described in terms of Landau's quasiparticle approach. Here, we experimentally unveil the role of incoherent matter excitations on the polaritons by exploring the relevant energy-momentum parameter space. We demonstrate the emergence of a well-defined lower polariton branch and an intriguing fading of the upper polariton at its entrance to a continuum of matter excitations. This marks the breakdown of the simplistic quasiparticle picture for this branch and the formation of a more complex quantum state. Our experimental results are sustained by a general theoretical framework that allows understanding the light-matter hybridisation beyond the quasiparticle approach. Abstract

This paper presents the development of scientific instrumentation for the fabrication of ferromagnetic thin films, by sputtering technique, for the use of 2-inch-diameter targets. Thin films were deposited using Permalloy alloy (Ni80Fe20) as ferromagnetic material at room temperature on Si (001) substrates. The film thicknesses were measured with profilometry and a deposition rate for this alloy of 16.2 nm/min was calculated. Abstract

We introduce the Unity Perception package which aims to simplify and accelerate the process of generating synthetic datasets for computer vision tasks by offering an easy-to-use and highly customizable toolset. This open-source package extends the Unity Editor and engine components to generate perfectly annotated examples for several common computer vision tasks. Additionally, it offers an extensible Randomization framework that lets the user quickly construct and configure randomized simulation parameters in order to introduce variation into the generated datasets. We provide an overview of the provided tools and how they work, and demonstrate the value of the generated synthetic datasets by training a 2D object detection model. The model trained with mostly synthetic data outperforms the model trained using only real data., Comment: We corrected tasks supported by NVISII platform. Abstract

Methods for detecting spin waves rely on electrodynamical coupling between the spin wave dipolar field and an inductive probe. While this coupling is usually treated as constant, in this work, we experimentally and theoretically show that it is indeed temperature dependent. By measuring the spin wave magnetic field as a function of temperature of, and distance to the sample, we demonstrate that there is both a longitudinal and transversal confinement of the field near the YIG-Air interface. Our results are relevant for spin wave detection, in particular in the field of spin wave caloritronics

11. Scattering of exchange spin waves from regions of modulated magnetization

Abstract

We investigate the reflection coefficient of spin waves propagating in an ultra-thin ferromagnetic film with regions where saturation magnetization is modulated. We find analytically and using micromagnetic simulations that there are transmission resonances that depend on the width of the regions and on the energy of excitation. Our results resemble the quantum mechanical Ramsauer-Townsend effect in which an electron with certain energies can propagate above a potential field without scattering. Our findings are useful for reconfigurable magnonic devices where the saturation magnetization can be dynamically controlled via a thermal landscape.

Abstract

There is a need for cleaner sources for electricity generation that allow the global achievement of climate change mitigation while increasing security of supply, meaning a broader use of renewables as primary sources, requiring the availability of more and/or updated power transmission lines, considering the characteristics, locations, and costs of these generation projects. Hence, cross-border power interconnections help to maximise power produced from renewable resources, as they make their generation available to different jurisdictions, allowing savings when compared to national-based solutions. Cross border power interconnections are not new, and they have been used since the early 20th century, when the technology was available, albeit there was a certain lack of support. Currently, there are several worldwide attempts to interconnect different electricity markets, including Canada and the United States, the European Union's internal market, Australia's National Electricity Market, the Central American Electrical Interconnection System, and the Andean Electrical Interconnection System in South America, among others. Nonetheless, the development and operation of cross-border power interconnections raise several considerations, from both national and international points of view. Therefore, energy law might become a vehicle that allow to identify some common principles for the development and operation of cross-border power interconnections that address these considerations. The purpose of this research is to find an answer to whether it is possible to identify common legal principles to facilitate the development and operation of cross-border power interconnections, considering that the achievement of climate change mitigation goals requires the maximisation of renewable generation, while enhancing and guaranteeing security of supply at both national and international levels. The analysis is based on a doctrinal and non-doctrinal analysis complemented with comparative legal analysis in the form of two case studies: Canada - United States, and European Union. The research found that cross-border power interconnections are possible from a technical and an economic point of view, and established the main characteristics within different legal frameworks for the development of cross-border power interconnections. In addition, the research identified the requirements to be considered when planning and developing legal frameworks for cross-border interconnections, particularly six legal principles that are paramount in the studied cases and are applicable to any interconnection initiative around the world.

27. Isolated Nocturnal Hypertension in People Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Nocturnal hypertension (NH) is a potent cardiovascular risk factor described frequently in people with HIV (PWH). Isolated NH (INH) is less well reported in PWH because of the need for ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) in office normotensive patients. We aim to document the prevalence of NH and INH and the clinical factors associated with these phenotypes. METHODS Cross-sectional study from an HIV program in Argentina. Office and ABPM measurements, as well as clinical and laboratory exploration, were performed. We defined INH as NH with daytime normotension in patients with office normotension. RESULTS We obtained ABPM in 66 PWH, 60% male, aged 44.7 (IQR 27–69) years; 87% receiving antiretroviral therapy, and 86.2% virologically suppressed. ABPM-based hypertension prevalence was 54.7% (95% CI: 42.5–66.3). The prevalence of NH was 48.5% (32/66), while the INH prevalence was 19.7% (95% CI: 11.7–30.9). No differences were found regarding sex, HIV viral load, CD4+ T lymphocytes count, or years of infection between normotensive and INH patients. Multiple linear regression model adjusted for sex and age determined that body mass index (β  = 0.93, P  < 0.01), plasma uric acid (β  = 0.25, P  = 0.04), plasma potassium (β  = −10.1, P  = 0.01), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (β  = 0.78, P  = 0.02) independently predicted nocturnal systolic blood pressure (BP) in PWH. In a multiple logistic regression model adjusted for age and sex, the presence of sedentariness, plasma potassium <4 mEq/L, BMI, and hs-CRP levels were predictors of INH. 28. Social determinants of blood pressure control in a middle-income country in Latin America.

Abstract

Blood pressure (BP) control is a key intervention to decrease cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the main cause of death in low and middle-income countries (MIC). Scarce data on the determinants of BP control in Latin America are available. Our objective is to explore the role of gender, age, education, and income as social determinants of BP control in Argentina, a MIC with a universal health care system. We evaluated 1184 persons in two hospitals. Blood pressure was measured using automatic oscillometric devices. We selected those patients treated for hypertension. The average BP of less than 140/90 mmHg was considered a controlled BP. We found 638 hypertensive individuals, of whom 477 (75%) were receiving antihypertensive drugs, and of those, 248 (52%) had controlled BP. The prevalence of low education was more frequent in uncontrolled patients (25.3% vs. 16.1%; P <.01). We did not find association between household income, gender, and BP control. Older patients had less BP control (44% of those older than 75 years vs. 60.9% of those younger than 40; test for trend P <.05). Multivariate regression indicates low education (OR 1.71 95% CI [1.05, 2.79]; P =.03) and older age (OR 1.01; 95% IC [1.00, 1.03]) as independent predictors of the lack of BP control. We conclude that rates of BP control are low in Argentina.
