4. 'I Had (My Dreams) on Hold, I Had to …': Mexican Descent Youth Discuss Factors That Lead to Leaving High School

Abstract

Despite Latinx students having the second highest rates of dropouts compared with other racial/ethnic groups, few studies qualitatively examine how Latinx youth view the academic and family contexts of leaving school. In this study, 16 Mexican descent youth from low-income backgrounds discussed why they felt pushed out of high school in focus groups. Grounded theory analysis revealed that youth perceive a lack of caring within schools and feel that they are blamed for lack of academic progress. Some youth felt they had to put their dreams on hold due to family stressors and lack of school resources--yet, they sustained hope for future career aspirations.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: During proliferative plant cell division, the new cell wall, called the cell plate, is first built in the middle of the cell and then expands outward to complete cytokinesis. This dynamic process requires coordinated movement and arrangement of the cytoskeleton and organelles. METHODS: Here we use live-cell markers to track the dynamic reorganization of microtubules, nuclei, endoplasmic reticulum, and endomembrane compartments during division and the formation of the cell plate in maize leaf epidermal cells. RESULTS: The microtubule plus-end localized protein END BINDING1 (EB1) highlighted increasing microtubule dynamicity during mitosis to support rapid changes in microtubule structures. The localization of the cell-plate specific syntaxin KNOLLE, several RAB-GTPases, as well as two plasma membrane localized proteins was assessed after treatment with the cytokinesis-specific callose-deposition inhibitor Endosidin7 (ES7) and the microtubule-disrupting herbicide chlorpropham (CIPC). While ES7 caused cell plate defects in Arabidopsis thaliana, it did not alter callose accumulation, or disrupt cell plate formation in maize. In contrast, CIPC treatment of maize epidermal cells occasionally produced irregular cell plates that split or fragmented, but did not otherwise disrupt the accumulation of cell-plate localized proteins. DISCUSSION: Together, these markers provide a robust suite of tools to examine subcellular trafficking and organellar organization during mitosis and cell plate formation in maize.

10. Critiquing Inequality in Society and on Campus: Peers and Faculty Facilitate Civic and Academic Outcomes of College Students

Abstract

Guided by Critical Consciousness Theory and the Multicontextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments, this research explored whether a critical reflection of societal inequality and a hostile campus climate were associated with collective student efficacy and grade point average (GPA) among racially/ethnically diverse students. We examined whether these relationships were mediated by positive and informal experiences with peers or faculty. Multiple indicator multiple causes models indicated that there were no latent mean differences or differential item functioning based on students' race/ethnicity, indicating that study measures were not biased against Students of Color or white students. There was one latent mean difference based on gender, such that women were more likely than men to endorse a critical reflection of societal inequality. Structural equation modeling indicated that a critical reflection of societal inequality was positively associated with collective student efficacy and GPA. In contrast, a hostile campus climate was negatively associated with collective student efficacy, GPA, and positive and informal experiences with peers or faculty. Negative experiences with faculty mediated the association between a hostile campus climate and collective student efficacy, such that a more hostile campus climate was associated with fewer positive and informal experiences with faculty and these negative experiences, in turn, were associated with less collective student efficacy. These findings suggest that a critical reflection of societal inequality promotes positive civic and academic capacities among college students, and that support from campus members (e.g., faculty) is key to achieve these positive outcomes.

15. How African Ungulates Respond to Tourist Vehicles in Kruger National Park.

Abstract

Managers of protected areas need to balance how they use or preserve their resources, especially regarding 'road ecology'. This study focuses on Kruger National Park's (KNP) common ungulates' response to tourist vehicles. We answered the following questions for impala, zebra, giraffe, blue wildebeest, greater kudu and steenbok: What mediates animal flight and flight distance from a vehicle? How much of KNP is affected by roads? Are ungulates using or avoiding roads? We sampled 55.9% of KNP's tourist roads, where we approached animals and determined whether and how far they fled. We georeferenced sightings and estimated the amount of land area along KNP's tourist roads where animals would be expected to flee from vehicles. Of 517 animal sightings, Impala were sighted most (263) and steenbok least (32). Impala had the highest flight propensity (42.6%) and wildebeest lowest (13%). Steenbok were found closest to the road (22.13 m) and wildebeest furthest (77.6 m). Impala had the closest tolerance distance (16.63 m), with zebra furthest (44.74 m). Impala fled the least distance (9.93 m) and zebra fled furthest (24.52 m). Binary logistic regressions (BLRs) showed that all species fled more consistently when closer to the road. The amount of KNP affected by animal flight based on BLRs was largest for zebra (2.32% of the park) and smallest for kudu (0.84%). Impala used the first 10 m of the roadside more than expected and 10–20 m from the road less. KNP's ungulates are habituated to vehicles since flight propensity was low, distribution analysis showed no‐road avoidance, flight distance was short, and animals > 50 m from the road generally do not flee. Given the amount of KNP that is already affected by vehicle traffic, as tourism increases, the land solely devoted to wildlife will necessarily decrease. Abstract

In an effort to promote sustainability and reduce carbon footprint, the Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) is considering the implementation of a mini hydroelectric plant (MHP) on its campus as a viable and sustainable renewable energy source. A study of the Puyo River’s flow near the campus, cost-benefit analysis (CBA), and environmental impacts were evaluated using standardized Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) methods. The analyses revealed an average annual flow rate of 25,85 m³/s at the proposed site, allowing for a generating capacity of 280 kW. Implementing a hydroelectric plant on the university campus is technically feasible and economically viable, with significant environmental benefits. The project will not only reduce the university's carbon footprint but also serve as an educational model for promoting sustainable practices. The research highlights the importance of integrating economic, technical, and environmental considerations in planning renewable energy infrastructure in the education sector., En un esfuerzo por promover la sostenibilidad y reducir la huella de carbono, la Universidad Estatal Amazónica (UEA) está considerando la implementación de una mini planta hidroeléctrica (MPH) en su campus como una fuente de energía renovable viable y sostenible. Se realizó el estudio del caudal del río puyo cerca al campus, análisis de coste-beneficio (ACB), y se evaluaron los impactos ambientales mediante métodos estandarizados de Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental (EIA). Los análisis revelaron un caudal medio anual de 25,85 m³/s en el sitio propuesto, permitiendo una capacidad de generación de 280 kW. La implementación de una central hidroeléctrica en el campus universitario es técnicamente viable y económicamente factible, con beneficios ambientales significativos. El proyecto no solo reducirá la huella de carbono de la universidad, sino que también servirá como un modelo educativo para la promoción de prácticas sostenibles. La investigación destaca la importancia de integrar consideraciones económicas, técnicas y ambientales en la planificación de infraestructuras energéticas renovables en el sector educativo.

34. Consecuencias de la Dependencia de la Inteligencia Artificial en Habilidades Críticas y Aprendizaje Autónomo en los Estudiantes

Abstract

The mass adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education raises significant questions about its impact on students' critical skills and autonomous learning. This quantitative study, based on surveys of 65 teachers, investigates the consequences of reliance on AI in education. Using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear regression, we examined how the overuse of AI to complete academic tasks influences student achievement. The results show a significant correlation (F(1, 63) = 5.12, p < .001) between dependence on AI and the development of critical skills, with a notable decrease in learning autonomy and problem-solving ability. Regression analysis confirmed that reliance on AI negatively predicts academic performance, underscoring the compromise of autonomous learning and the loss of research skills. This study concludes that, although AI offers useful tools for education, its inappropriate use can have adverse effects on the holistic development of students., La adopción masiva de la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) en educación plantea preguntas significativas sobre su impacto en las habilidades críticas y el aprendizaje autónomo de los estudiantes. Este estudio cuantitativo, basado en encuestas aplicadas a 65 docentes, investiga las consecuencias de la dependencia de la IA en la educación. Utilizando análisis de varianza (ANOVA) y regresión lineal, se examinó cómo el uso excesivo de la IA para completar tareas académicas influye en el rendimiento de los estudiantes. Los resultados muestran una correlación significativa (F(1, 63) = 5.12, p < .001)entre la dependencia de la IA y el desarrollo de habilidades críticas, con una disminución notable en la autonomía de aprendizaje y en la capacidad de resolución de problemas. 35. Care in Containment: Exploring the Role and Challenges of Social Workers in Detention Facilities for Unaccompanied Children

Abstract

This dissertation consists of an ethnographic study of clinical social workers inside detention facilities for unaccompanied children in the Southwestern United States. In the U.S., unaccompanied children are detained by Border Patrol or the Bureau of Immigration Customs Enforcement (BICE) and then transferred to private nonprofit facilities funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). Since the inception of the ORR system in 2003, over 600,000 children have been detained in enclosed facilities. This anthropological study sheds light on the complex articulations of care by professionals inside these detention facilities that are tasked with providing mental health and child advocacy within compulsory programs. The dissertation captures the voices of workers employed inside these facilities who currently or previously provided therapy, released recommendations, and performed child advocacy for children in detention awaiting reunification with a family member in the U.S. This research provides a critical perspective on the reception context, specifically on unaccompanied children and, more broadly, on governmentality and bordering practices. This research also highlights the various forms of disciplining and surveillance endured by NGO workers. Finally, this project also has an applied component. Findings from this dissertation may also inform immediate efforts to improve reception services for unaccompanied children and staff as they continue to face ongoing forms of violence within the detention system and after their release.

Abstract

The purpose of this research focuses on understanding the socioeconomic situation of women affiliated with the Rural Social Security in the Mayancela medical dispensary, located in the parish of Sinincay, in the Cuenca canton, in the year 2023. This is done based on the postulates of the Human Scale Development Theory and the Ecological Theory. To achieve this, 150 questionnaires were applied to affiliated and retired women in this medical dispensary, which were the product of the application of simple random sampling. The approach used in this research was quantitative with a non-experimental - transversal nature and responds to a descriptive research design. Finally, the population under study corresponds to adult and older Ecuadorian women from rural areas, whose main activities are agriculture, livestock and crafts. These women also have the support of pensions, bonuses and remittances, which help provide adequate income to cover their fundamental needs. The analysis highlights that, according to the findings, the income of these women is lower than their expenses, underscoring the importance of additional sources of financial support to maintain a satisfactory economic balance.

Abstract

Wildlife must adapt to human presence to survive in the Anthropocene, so it is critical to understand species responses to humans in different contexts. We used camera trapping as a lens to view mammal responses to changes in human activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 163 species sampled in 102 projects around the world, changes in the amount and timing of animal activity varied widely. Under higher human activity, mammals were less active in undeveloped areas but unexpectedly more active in developed areas while exhibiting greater nocturnality. Carnivores were most sensitive, showing the strongest decreases in activity and greatest increases in nocturnality. Wildlife managers must consider how habituation and uneven sensitivity across species may cause fundamental differences in human–wildlife interactions along gradients of human influence.

NGM‑I was supported by AECC (PRDMA19003GARC)., A hallmark of many malignant tumors is dedifferentiated (immature) cells bearing slight or no resemblance to the normal cells from which the cancer originated. Tumor dedifferentiated cells exhibit a higher capacity to survive to chemo and radiotherapies and have the ability to incite tumor relapse. Inducing cancer cell differentiation would abolish their self-renewal and invasive capacity and could be combined with the current standard of care, especially in poorly differentiated and aggressive tumors (with worst prognosis). However, differentiation therapy is still in its early stages and the intrinsic complexity of solid tumor heterogeneity demands innovative approaches in order to be efficiently translated into the clinic. We demonstrate here that microRNA 203, a potent driver of differentiation in pluripotent stem cells (ESCs and iPSCs), promotes the differentiation of mammary gland tumor cells. Combining mouse in vivo approaches and both mouse and human-derived tridimensional organoid cultures, we report that miR-203 influences the self-renewal capacity, plasticity and differentiation potential of breast cancer cells and prevents tumor cell growth in vivo.
