Interim assessment is frequently administered via computerized adaptive testing (CAT), offering direct support to teaching and learning. This study attempted to fill a vital knowledge gap about the nuanced landscape of examinees' rapid-guessing patterns in CAT in the interim assessment context. We analyzed a sample of 146,519 examinees in Grades 1-8 who participated in a widely used CAT, using hierarchical clustering, a robust data science methodology for uncovering insights in data. We found that examinees' rapid-guessing patterns varied across item positions, content domains, chronological grades, examinee clusters, and examinees' overall rapid-guessing level on the test, suggesting a nuanced interplay between testing features and examinees' behavior. The mechanism of antiproton-nucleus annihilation at rest is not fully understood, despite substantial previous experimental and theoretical work. In this study we used slow extracted, sub-keV antiprotons from the ASACUSA apparatus at CERN to measure the charged particle multiplicities and their energy deposits from antiproton annihilations at rest on three different nuclei: carbon, molybdenum and gold. The results are compared with predictions from different models in the simulation tools Geant4 and FLUKA. For any $d \geq 2$, we prove that there exists an integer $n_0(d)$ such that there exists an $n \times n$ magic square of $d^\text{th}$ powers for all $n \geq n_0(d)$. In particular, we establish the existence of an $n \times n$ magic square of squares for all $n \geq 4$, which settles a conjecture of V\'{a}rilly-Alvarado. All previous approaches had been based on constructive methods and the existence of $n \times n$ magic squares of $d^\text{th}$ powers had only been known for sparse values of $n$. We prove our result by the Hardy-Littlewood circle method, which in this setting essentially reduces the problem to finding a sufficient number of disjoint linearly independent subsets of the columns of the coefficient matrix of the equations defining magic squares. In this paper, we obtain the asymptotic formula for the number of integral solutions to a system of diagonal equations. We obtain the asymptotic formula for the number of solutions with variables restricted to smooth numbers as well. We improve the required number of variables compared to previous results by incorporating the recent progress on Waring's problem and the resolution of Vinogradov's mean value theorem.

Cosmic strings radiate detectable gravitational waves in models featuring high-scale symmetry breaking, e.g., high-scale leptogenesis. In this Letter, for the first time, we show that different flavored regimes of high-scale leptogenesis can be tested distinctly with the spectral features in cosmic string-radiated gravitational waves. This is possible if the scalar field that makes right-handed neutrinos massive is feebly coupled to the Standard Model Higgs. Each flavored regime, sensitive to low-energy neutrino experiments, leaves a marked imprint on the gravitational waves spectrum. A three-flavor and a two-flavor regime could be probed by a characteristic fall-off of the gravitational wave spectrum at the LISA-DECIGO-ET frequency bands with preceding scale-invariant amplitudes bounded from above and below. Customer service is how companies interface with their customers. It can contribute heavily towards the overall customer satisfaction. However, high-quality service can become expensive, creating an incentive to make it as cost efficient as possible and prompting most companies to utilize AI-powered assistants, or "chat bots". On the other hand, human-to-human interaction is still desired by customers, especially when it comes to complex scenarios such as disputes and sensitive topics like bill payment. This raises the bar for customer service agents. They need to accurately understand the customer's question or concern, identify a solution that is acceptable yet feasible (and within the company's policy), all while handling multiple conversations at once. In this work, we introduce "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) as an add-on feature to an agent-facing customer service interface. AMA allows agents to ask questions to a large language model (LLM) on demand, as they are handling customer conversations -- the LLM provides accurate responses in real-time, reducing the amount of context switching the agent needs. In our internal experiments, we find that agents using AMA versus a traditional search experience spend approximately 10% fewer seconds per conversation containing a search, translating to millions of dollars of savings annually. Agents that used the AMA feature provided positive feedback nearly 80% of the time, demonstrating its usefulness as an AI-assisted feature for customer care.

We explore a scenario where an early epoch of matter domination is driven by the mass scale $M_N$ of the right-handed neutrinos, which also characterizes the different flavour regimes of leptogenesis. Such a matter-domination epoch gives rise to peculiar spectral imprints on primordial Gravitational Waves (GWs) produced during inflation. We point out that the characteristic spectral features are detectable in multiple frequency bands with current and future GW experiments in case of Blue GWs (BGWs) described by a power-law with a positive spectral index $(n_T >0)$ and an amplitude compatible with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) measurements. We find that the three-flavour leptogenesis regime with $M_N \lesssim 10^9~{\rm GeV}$ imprints BGWs more prominently than the two-flavour and one-flavour regimes characterized by a higher right-neutrino mass scale. In particular, a two-flavour (three-flavour) leptogenesis regime is expected to leave distinct imprints in the mHz ($\mu$Hz) band. Moreover, we translate the current Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and LIGO limits on the GW energy density into constraints on the flavour leptogenesis parameter space for different GW spectral index $n_T$. Interestingly, a three-flavour leptogenesis regime can offer a unique signal testable in the next LIGO run with a correlated signature in the PTA frequency band with an amplitude comparable to the one expected from supermassive black holes., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, comments are welcome

Addressing the challenges related to data sparsity, cold-start problems, and diversity in recommendation systems is both crucial and demanding. Many current solutions leverage knowledge graphs to tackle these issues by combining both item-based and user-item collaborative signals. A common trend in these approaches focuses on improving ranking performance at the cost of escalating model complexity, reducing diversity, and complicating the task. It is essential to provide recommendations that are both personalized and diverse, rather than solely relying on achieving high rank-based performance, such as Click-through Rate, Recall, etc. In this paper, we propose a hybrid multi-task learning approach, training on user-item and item-item interactions. We apply item-based contrastive learning on descriptive text, sampling positive and negative pairs based on item metadata. Our approach allows the model to better understand the relationships between entities within the knowledge graph by utilizing semantic information from text. It leads to more accurate, relevant, and diverse user recommendations and a benefit that extends even to cold-start users who have few interactions with items. We perform extensive experiments on two widely used datasets to validate the effectiveness of our approach. Our findings demonstrate that jointly training user-item interactions and item-based signals using synopsis text is highly effective. Furthermore, our results provide evidence that item-based contrastive learning enhances the quality of entity embeddings, as indicated by metrics such as uniformity and alignment., Comment: Accepted at LREC-COLING 2024

Precise manipulation that is generalizable across scenes and objects remains a persistent challenge in robotics. Current approaches for this task heavily depend on having a significant number of training instances to handle objects with pronounced visual and/or geometric part ambiguities. Our work explores the grounding of fine-grained part descriptors for precise manipulation in a zero-shot setting by utilizing web-trained text-to-image diffusion-based generative models. We tackle the problem by framing it as a dense semantic part correspondence task. Our model returns a gripper pose for manipulating a specific part, using as reference a user-defined click from a source image of a visually different instance of the same object. We require no manual grasping demonstrations as we leverage the intrinsic object geometry and features. Practical experiments in a real-world tabletop scenario validate the efficacy of our approach, demonstrating its potential for advancing semantic-aware robotics manipulation. The Antiproton Decelerator (AD) at CERN provides antiproton bunches with a kinetic energy of 5.3 MeV. The Extra-Low ENergy Antiproton ring at CERN, commissioned at the AD in 2018, now supplies a bunch of electron-cooled antiprotons at a fixed energy of 100 keV. The MUSASHI antiproton trap was upgraded by replacing the radio-frequency quadrupole decelerator with a pulsed drift tube to re-accelerate antiprotons and optimize the injection energy into the degrader foils. We study the role of an ultra-light primordial black hole (PBH) dominated phase on the generation of baryon asymmetry of the Universe (BAU) and dark matter (DM) in a type-I seesaw framework augmented by Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry which solves the strong CP problem. While the BAU is generated via leptogenesis from the decay of heavy right-handed neutrino (RHN) at the seesaw scale dictated by the PQ scale, DM can arise either from QCD axion or one of the RHNs depending upon the PQ scale. The ultra-light PBH not only affects the axion DM production via misalignment mechanism, but can also produce superheavy RHN DM via evaporation. Depending upon the PBH parameters and relative abundance of axion DM, axion mass can vary over a wide range from sub-$\mu$eV to sub-eV keeping the detection prospects promising across a wide range of experiments. While hot axions produced from PBH evaporation can lead to observable $\Delta N_{\rm eff}$ to be probed at future cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, stochastic gravitational waves (GW) produced from PBH density fluctuations can be observed at future detectors like CE, DECIGO, LISA and even future runs of LIGO-VIRGO., Comment: 33 pages, 9 captioned figures

An electron plasma can be confined for a theoretically infinite time in a Penning-Malmberg trap, a linear, azimuthally-symmetric magneto-electrostatic device where upon suitable conditions (high magnetization) the transverse dynamics of the plasma column is isomorphic to the one displayed by a two-dimensional ideal fluid. Fluid dynamics can thus be reproduced in these systems with a very high degree of control on the system's parameters and active excitation of fluid perturbations is made possible by the use of static or time-dependent electric fields (i.e., fluid strains) imparted by electric potentials applied to the azimuthal patches of a sectored electrode of the trap. An example is represented by azimuthal velocity shear phenomena and the insurgence of Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities in fluid vortices. We present a study where we exploit multipolar rotating electric fields to generate V-states and observe their dynamics and stability properties. A V-state is the generalization of the 2D Kirchhoff (elliptical) fluid vortex to a generic KH mode, in the nonlinear regime. In particular, we discuss first how we can exploit a combination of techniques (plasma evaporation and tilt-induced transport) to tune the radial vorticity profile, which may have an effect on the dynamics of the growth and decay of the selected KH wave. Research progress in quantum computing has, thus far, focused on a narrow set of application domains. Expanding the suite of quantum application domains is vital for the discovery of new software toolchains and architectural abstractions. In this work, we unlock a new class of applications ripe for quantum computing research -- computational cognitive modeling. Cognitive models are critical to understanding and replicating human intelligence. Our work connects computational cognitive models to quantum computer architectures for the first time. We release QUATRO, a collection of quantum computing applications from cognitive models. The development and execution of QUATRO shed light on gaps in the quantum computing stack that need to be closed to ease programming and drive performance. Among several contributions, we propose and study ideas pertaining to quantum cloud scheduling (using data from gate- and annealing-based quantum computers), parallelization, and more. In the long run, we expect our research to lay the groundwork for more versatile quantum computer systems in the future.

The ASACUSA-Cusp collaboration has recently upgraded the positron system to improve the production of antihydrogen. Previously, the experiment suffered from contamination of the vacuum in the antihydrogen production trap due to the transfer of positrons from the high pressure region of a buffer gas trap. This contamination reduced the lifetime of antiprotons. By adding a new positron accumulator and therefore decreasing the number of transfer cycles, the contamination of the vacuum has been reduced. Further to this, a new rare gas moderator and buffer gas trap, previously used at the Aarhus University, were installed. Measurements from Aarhus suggested that the number of positrons could be increased by a factor of four in comparison to the old system used at CERN. This would mean a reduction of the time needed for accumulating a sufficient number of positrons (of the order of a few million) for an antihydrogen production cycle. Motivated by the recent release of new results from five different pulsar timing array (PTA) experiments claiming to have found compelling evidence for primordial gravitational waves (GW) at nano-Hz frequencies, we consider the prospects of generating such a signal from inflationary blue-tilted tensor power spectrum in a specific dark matter (DM) scenario dubbed as $\textit{Miracle-less WIMP}$. While $\textit{Miracle-less WIMP}$, due to insufficient interaction rate with the Standard Model (SM) bath gets thermally overproduced, inflationary blue-tilted gravitational waves (BGW) in compliance with PTA data, conflict cosmological observations if reheat temperature after inflation is sufficiently high. Both these issues are circumvented with late entropy dilution, bringing DM abundance within observational limits and creating a doubly-peaked feature in the BGW spectrum consistent with cosmological observations. We show that the seesaw mechanisms that exhibit right-handed neutrino mass-dependent non-standard post-inflationary cosmology make blue-tilted inflationary gravitational waves (GW) compatible with the recent findings of nHz stochastic GW background by the pulsar-timing arrays (PTAs) for high reheating temperatures. The right-handed neutrino (RHN) mass scale has to be $\mathcal{O}(\rm GeV)$. Remarkably, such a scenario produces a correlated signature testable by the future LIGO run. In addition to contributing to the active neutrino masses, $\mathcal{O}(\rm GeV)$ RHNs generate baryon asymmetry of the universe via low-scale-leptogenesis. They can be searched for in collider experiments. CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) is the next generation ground-based observatory for gamma-ray astronomy at very-high energies. The Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1) is located at the Northern site of CTA, on the Canary Island of La Palma. LSTs are designed to provide optimal performance in the lowest part of the energy range covered by CTA, down to $\simeq 20$ GeV. LST-1 started performing astronomical observations in November 2019, during its commissioning phase, and it has been taking data since then. We present the first LST-1 observations of the Crab Nebula, the standard candle of very-high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and use them, together with simulations, to assess the basic performance parameters of the telescope. The data sample consists of around 36 hours of observations at low zenith angles collected between November 2020 and March 2022. LST-1 has reached the expected performance during its commissioning period - only a minor adjustment of the preexisting simulations was needed to match the telescope behavior. The energy threshold at trigger level is estimated to be around 20 GeV, rising to $\simeq 30$ GeV after data analysis. Performance parameters depend strongly on energy, and on the strength of the gamma-ray selection cuts in the analysis: angular resolution ranges from 0.12 to 0.40 degrees, and energy resolution from 15 to 50%. Flux sensitivity is around 1.1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 250 GeV for a 50-h observation (12% for 30 minutes). The spectral energy distribution (in the 0.03 - 30 TeV range) and the light curve obtained for the Crab Nebula agree with previous measurements, considering statistical and systematic uncertainties. The ASACUSA Cusp experiment requires the production of dense positron plasmas with a high repetition rate to produce a beam of antihydrogen. In this work, details of the positron production apparatus used for the first observation of the antihydrogen beam, and subsequent measurements are described in detail. Methods for reducing the radius, temperature, and space charge of nonneutral plasma are usually reported for conditions which approximate an ideal Penning Malmberg trap. Here we show that (1) similar methods are still effective under surprisingly adverse circumstances: we perform SDR and SDREVC in a strong magnetic mirror field using only 3 out of 4 rotating wall petals. In addition, we demonstrate (2) an alternative to SDREVC, using e-kick instead of EVC and (3) an upper limit for how much plasma can be cooled to T < 20 K using EVC. This limit depends on the space charge, not on the number of particles or the plasma density., Comment: Version 2: a small discrepancy between the N values for Table 1 and Fig. 3 led to an investigation of the charge counting diagnostic. We study the effect of an ultra-light primordial black hole (PBH) dominated phase on the gravitational wave (GW) spectrum generated by a cosmic string (CS) network formed as a result of a high-scale $U(1)$ symmetry breaking. A PBH-dominated phase leads to tilts in the spectrum via entropy dilution and generates a new GW spectrum from PBH density fluctuations, detectable at ongoing and planned near-future GW detectors. The combined spectrum has a unique shape with a plateau, a sharp tilted peak over the plateau, and a characteristic fall-off, which can be distinguished from the one generated in the combination of CS and any other matter domination or new exotic physics. What is the highest energy at which gravitons can be observed? We address this question by studying graviton-to-photon conversion - the inverse-Gertsenshtein effect - in the magnetic field of the Milky Way. We find that above $\sim 1~\mbox{PeV}$ the effective photon mass grows large enough to quench the conversion rate. For sub-PeV energies, the induced photon flux is comparable to the sensitivity of LHAASO to a diffuse $\gamma$-ray background, but only for graviton abundances of order $\Omega_{\text{gw}} h^2_0 \sim 1$. In the future, owing to a better understanding of $\gamma$-ray backgrounds, larger effective areas and longer observation times, sub-PeV shimmering gravitons with a realistic abundance of $\Omega_{\text{gw}} h^2_0 \sim 0.01$ could be detected. We show how such a large abundance is achieved in a cosmologically-motivated scenario of post-recombination superheavy dark matter decay. This paper reports the study of a new interferometric configuration to measure the effect of gravity on positronium. A Mach-Zehnder matter-wave interferometer has been designed to operate with single-photon transitions and to transfer high momentum to a 200 eV positronium beam. The work shows the results and methods used to simulate the interferometer and estimate the operating parameters and the time needed to perform the experiment. It has been estimated that within less than one year, the acquisition time is sufficient to achieve a 10\% accuracy level in measuring positronium gravitational acceleration, even with a poorly collimated beam, which is significant for theoretical models describing matter-antimatter symmetry. These results pave the way for single photon transition large momentum transfer interferometry with fast atomic beams, which is particularly useful for studies with antimatter and unstable atoms., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures
