- Abstract
High-yielding cultivars with high water use efficiency are a main target in maize breeding; yet, no comprehensive study about the genetic regulation of photosynthesis, or about the ranges of variability for gas exchange-related parameters in maize has been published. Here, a large maize panel of 731 inbred lines previously genotyped was evaluated to elucidate the genetic basis of photosynthesis-related parameters, measured 15–30 days after silking, across three years. Large phenotypic and genotypic variations were observed in this panel with dramatic fluctuations in heritability for various traits. We detected 27 minor Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL), comprising 39 significant trait-Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), located mostly on chromosomes 5 and 8. Most candidates genes were novel, though a few of them were functionally associated with the theory of source-to-sink translocation presented in previous studies. Genomic selection of favorable alleles to enhance photosynthesis, along with other tools, could be a practical, and a promising, approach in the future. Leaf net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance are the most promising targets for breeding programs. We did not find any marker associated with intrinsic water use efficiency, which highlights that developing maize cultivars with more efficient use of water by genomic selection is not straightforward; however, given the high heritability value for this trait, phenotypic selection could be implemented.

- Abstract
High-yielding cultivars with high water use efficiency are a main target in maize breeding; however, no comprehensive study about the genetic regulation of photosynthetic parameters, or about the ranges of variability for photosynthesis in maize has been published. Here, a large maize panel of 731 inbred lines with genotyping by sequencing data was evaluated for elucidating the genetic basis of photosynthesis-related parameters, measured in an interval of 15-30 days after silking, across three years. Large phenotypic and genotypic variations were observed in this panel with dramatic fluctuations in heritability for various traits. We detected 40 minor Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) comprising 64 significant trait-Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) associations that mostly concentrated on chromosomes 5 and 8. Most genes are novel candidates, though a few of them were logically and functionally associated with the theory of source-to-sink translocation presented in previous studies. The current study demonstrated a new natural variation and a comprehensive mechanism of photosynthesis in maize. Genomic selection of favorable alleles for enhancing photosynthesis, along with other tools, could be a practical and a promising approach in the future. Photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance are the most promising targets for breeding programs, focusing on developing maize cultivars with more efficient use of water, though facing this challenge is not straightforward.

- Abstract
The well-known Separation of Concerns Principle has been revisited by recent research, suggesting to go beyond the limits of traditional modularization. This has led to the definition of an orthogonal, invasive composition relationship, which can be used all along the software development process, taking several different forms. The object-like entity known as aspect is the best known among them, but in the most general case it can be defined as a new kind of structure. Software Architecture must be able to describe such a structure. Moreover, as most Adls have a formal foundation, this can be used to provide an adequate formalization for the aspectual composition relationship, which is still under discussion. In this paper, we propose to base this architecture-level definition in the concept of superimposition, integrating the resulting framework into the process-algebraic, dynamic Adl named ${\mathcal{P}i\mathcal{L}ar}$. This language has a reflective design, which allows us to define that extension without redefining the semantics; in addition, the extended syntax can be used to avoid the use of reflective notions. Nevertheless, the language must provide the means to define general patterns to guide the weaving. Such patterns must not only identify locations in the architecture, but also the adequate states of the corresponding process structure. Therefore, we suggest to use temporal logic, specifically the μ-calculus, as the quantification mechanism. To illustrate this approach, we expose a case study in which all these ideas are used, and conclude by discussing how the combination of temporal logic and aspect superimposition, in this context, provides also an alternative way to describe architectural dynamism. - Abstract
This document studies in some detail the recently developed concept of aspect at the architecture level. This concept introduces a novel kind of modularization and composition in software, and therefore it defines new structures which must be studied by Software Architecture, determining the architectural features of aspects. However the opposite strategy can also be considered; namely, a new conceptual model can be defined, including an architecture-level notion of aspect. This would provide a new abstraction to describe software structures, thus effectively providing an additional dimension in architecture description, and would enable the study of the specific compositional problems in this dimension. The document starts by addressing the relevance of this kind of study, and continues by discussing why the new notions are necessary. Then it continues by including a brief enumeration of the more relevant notions derived from this aspectual framework, with particular emphasis on their relationship with software components. Next the document explores the different forms in which these notions could be incorporated into the context of Software Architecture, revealing a rather extensive variety of approaches, and also the relationships and partial equivalences between them. The paper concludes by noting a number or open questions and futures areas of research within this context. - Abstract
Background and Objective: The progressive increase in cases of multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) syndrome and the lack of studies which associate the syndrome with possible occupational origins means that further research in this field is required. The objective of this study was to compare the epidemiological, clinical and prognostic aspects of cases of MCS of occupational and non-occupational origin., Patients and Method: Observational study of patients diagnosed with MCS by the toxicology outpatients clinic of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona between 2002 and 2007. The occupational and non-occupational origin of MCS was considered as an independent variable. The dependant variables were occupational activity, triggering agents of MCS, chemical agents associated with the development of clinical manifestations, severity of the symptoms, comorbidities and work disability. Percentages were compared between groups., Results: A total of 165 patients were included: The mean age was 47.7 years and 90.9% were women. There were significant differences between patients of occupational and non-occupational origin with respect to comorbidities such as chronic fatigue syndrome (68.1% versus 88.5%; p=0.002) and fibromyalgia (49.3% versus 73.9%; p=0.002), temporary disability (60.9% versus 39.6%; p=0.006) and permanent disability (8.7% versus 22.9%; p=0.006)., Conclusions: Cases of MCS attributed to an occupational origin had fewer comorbidities and less permanent disability than those of non-occupational origin., (Copyright © 2009 Elsevier España, S.L.
