We report an investigation of X-ray induced desorption of neutrals, cations and anions from CO ice. The desorption of neutral CO, by far the most abundant, is quantified and discussed within the context of its application to astrochemistry. The desorption of many different cations, including large cations up to the mass limit of the spectrometer, are observed. In contrast, the only desorbing anions detected are O$^-$ and C$^-$. The desorption mechanisms of all these species are discussed with the aid of their photodesorption spectrum. The evolution of the X-ray absorption spectrum shows significant chemical modifications of the ice upon irradiation, which along with the desorption of large cations gives a new insight into X-ray induced photochemistry in CO ice., Comment: Accepted in PCCP

Electronic excitations near the surface of water ice lead to the desorption of adsorbed molecules, through a so far debated mechanism. A systematic study of photon-induced indirect desorption, revealed by the spectral dependence of the desorption (7 to 13 eV), is conducted for Ar, Kr, N2, and CO adsorbed on H2O or D2O amorphous ices. The mass and isotopic dependence and the increase of intrinsic desorption efficiency with photon energy all point to a mechanism of desorption induced by collisions between adsorbates and energetic H or D atoms, produced by photodissociation of water. This constitutes a direct and unambiguous experimental demonstration of the mechanism of indirect desorption of weakly adsorbed species on water ice, and sheds new light on the possibility of this mechanism in other systems. Astrophysical observations show complex organic molecules (COMs) in the gas phase of protoplanetary disks. X-rays emitted from the central young stellar object (YSO) that irradiate interstellar ices in the disk, followed by the ejection of molecules in the gas phase, are a possible route to explain the abundances observed in the cold regions. This process, known as X-ray photodesorption, needs to be quantified for methanol-containing ices. We aim at experimentally measuring X-ray photodesorption yields of methanol and its photo-products from binary mixed ices: $^{13}$CO:CH$_3$OH ice and H$_2$O:CH$_3$OH ice. We irradiated these ices at 15 K with X-rays in the 525 - 570 eV range. The release of species in the gas phase was monitored by quadrupole mass spectrometry, and photodesorption yields were derived. For $^{13}$CO:CH$_3$OH ice, CH$_3$OH X-ray photodesorption yield is estimated to be 10$^{-2}$ molecule/photon at 564 eV. X-ray photodesorption of larger COMs, which can be attributed to either ethanol, dimethyl ether, and/or formic acid, is detected with a yield of 10$^{-3}$ molecule/photon. When methanol is mixed with water, X-ray photodesorption of methanol and of the previous COMs is not detected. X-ray induced chemistry, dominated by low-energy secondary electrons, is found to be the main mechanism that explains these results. We also provide desorption yields that are applicable to protoplanetary disk environments for astrochemical models. The physical mechanisms at play are discussed and must likely involve the thermalization of Auger electrons in the ice, thus indicating that its composition plays an important role. Finally, we provide desorption yields applicable to protoplanetary disk environments for astrochemical models. The X-rays are shown to be a potential candidate to explain gas-phase abundances of methanol in disks. However, more relevant desorption yields derived from experiments on mixed ices are mandatory to properly support the role played by X-rays in nonthermal desorption of methanol (see paper II).

Core-excitation of water ice releases many different molecules and ions in the gas phase. Studying these desorbed species and the underlying mechanisms can provide useful information on the effects of X-ray irradiation in ice. We report a detailed study of the X-ray induced desorption of a number of neutral, cationic and anionic species from amorphous solid water. We discuss the desorption mechanisms, and the relative contributions of Auger and secondary electrons (X-ray induced Electron Stimulated Desorption) and initial excitation (\rev{direct desorption}) as well as the role of photochemistry. Anions are shown to desorb not just through processes linked with secondary electrons but also through direct dissociation of the core-excited molecule. The desorption spectra of oxygen ions (O$^+$, OH$^+$, H$_2$O$^+$, O$^-$, OH$^-$) give a new perspective on their previously reported very low desorption yields for most types of irradiation of water, showing that they mostly originate from the dissociation of photoproducts such as H$_2$O$_2$., Comment: Accepted in Journal of Chemical Physics

The study and quantification of UV photon-induced desorption of frozen molecules furthers our understanding of the chemical evolution of cold interstellar regions. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important intermediate species in both gas-phase and solid-phase chemical networks. In this work, we present quantitative measurements of the photodesorption of a pure NO ice.We used the tunable monochromatic synchrotron light of the DESIRS beamline of the SOLEIL facility near Paris to irradiate NO ices in the 6 - 13.6 eV range and measured desorption by quadrupole mass spectrometry.We find that NO photodesorption is very efficient, its yield being around 1e-2 molecule per incident photon for UV fields relevant to the diffuse and dense interstellar medium. Water is the main component of interstellar ice mantles, is abundant in the solar system and is a crucial ingredient for life. The formation of this molecule in the interstellar medium cannot be explained by gas-phase chemistry only and its surface hydrogenation formation routes at low temperatures (O, O2, O3 channels) are still unclear and most likely incomplete. In a previous paper we discussed an unexpected zeroth-order H2O production behavior in O2 ice hydrogenation experiments compared to the first-order H2CO and CH3OH production behavior found in former studies on hydrogenation of CO ice. In this paper we experimentally investigate in detail how the structure of O2 ice leads to this rare behavior in reaction order and production yield. In our experiments H atoms are added to a thick O2 ice under fully controlled conditions, while the changes are followed by means of reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). The H-atom penetration mechanism is systematically studied by varying the temperature, thickness and structure of the O2 ice. We conclude that the competition between reaction and diffusion of the H atoms into the O2 ice explains the unexpected H2O and H2O2 formation behavior. In addition, we show that the proposed O2 hydrogenation scheme is incomplete, suggesting that additional surface reactions should be considered. Indeed, the detection of newly formed O3 in the ice upon H-atom exposure proves that the O2 channel is not an isolated route. Water is abundantly present in the Universe. It is the main component of interstellar ice mantles and a key ingredient for life. Water in space is mainly formed through surface reactions. Three formation routes have been proposed in the past: hydrogenation of surface O, O2, and O3. In a previous paper [Ioppolo et al., Astrophys. J., 2008, 686, 1474] we discussed an unexpected non-standard zeroth-order H2O2 production behaviour in O2 hydrogenation experiments, which suggests that the proposed reaction network is not complete, and that the reaction channels are probably more interconnected than previously thought. In this paper we aim to derive the full reaction scheme for O2 surface hydrogenation and to constrain the rates of the individual reactions. This is achieved through simultaneous H-atom and O2 deposition under ultra-high vacuum conditions for astronomically relevant temperatures. Different H/O2 ratios are used to trace different stages in the hydrogenation network. The chemical changes in the forming ice are followed by means of reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS). New reaction paths are revealed as compared to previous experiments. Several reaction steps prove to be much more efficient (H + O2) or less efficient (H + OH and H2 + OH) than originally thought. These are the main conclusions of this work and the extended network concluded here will have profound implications for models that describe the formation of water in space., Comment: 1 page, 1 figure

Hydrogenation reactions of CO in inter- and circumstellar ices are regarded as an important starting point in the formation of more complex species. Previous laboratory measurements by two groups on the hydrogenation of CO ices resulted in controversial results on the formation rate of methanol. Our aim is to resolve this controversy by an independent investigation of the reaction scheme for a range of H-atom fluxes and different ice temperatures and thicknesses. Reaction rates are determined by using a state-of-the-art ultra high vacuum experimental setup to bombard an interstellar CO ice analog with room temperature H atoms. The reaction of CO + H into H2CO and subsequently CH3OH is monitored by a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer in a reflection absorption mode. In addition, after each completed measurement a temperature programmed desorption experiment is performed to identify the produced species. Different H-atom fluxes, morphologies, and ice thicknesses are tested. The formation of both formaldehyde and methanol via CO hydrogenation is confirmed at low temperature (12-20 K). We confirm, as proposed by Hidaka et al., that the discrepancy between the two Japanese studies is mainly due to a difference in the applied hydrogen atom flux. The production rate of formaldehyde is found to decrease and the penetration column to increase with temperature. In order to fully understand the laboratory data, the experimental results are interpreted using Monte Carlo simulations. This technique takes into account the layered structure of CO ice. Temperature-dependent reaction barriers and diffusion rates are inferred using this model. Even though water is the main constituent in interstellar icy mantles, its chemical origin is not well understood. Three different formation routes have been proposed following hydrogenation of O, O2, or O3, but experimental evidence is largely lacking. We present a solid state astrochemical laboratory study in which one of these routes is tested. For this purpose O2 ice is bombarded by H- or D-atoms under ultra high vacuum conditions at astronomically relevant temperatures ranging from 12 to 28 K. The use of reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) permits derivation of reaction rates and shows efficient formation of H2O (D2O) with a rate that is surprisingly independent of temperature. This formation route converts O2 into H2O via H2O2 and is found to be orders of magnitude more efficient than previously assumed.
