This refers to management systems, novel techniques and technologies that lead to a reduction of heat stress for pigs.

Superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) incorporating thin film nanobridges as weak links have sensitivities approaching that required for single spin detection at 4.2 K. However, due to thermal hysteresis they are difficult to operate at much lower temperatures which hinder their application to many quantum measurements. To overcome this, we have developed nanoscale SQUIDs made from titanium-gold proximity bilayers. We show that their electrical properties are consistent with a theoretical model developed for heat flow in bilayers and demonstrate that they enable magnetic measurements to be made on a sample at system temperatures down to 60 mK. - Abstract
Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Publishing the EMLS methods and dataset might inspire similar initiatives to study across large geographic areas that will contribute to better understanding lake responses in a changing environment.

A high-temperature superconducting first-order axial gradiometer with thick film YBa2Cu3Oτ-δ pick-up loops inductively coupled to a thin film YBa2 Cu3τ-δ superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer has been designed, fabricated and characterized. The gradiometer has a baseline of 79 mm, an estimated intrinsic system balance of 1:480 for uniform axial magnetic fields and an estimated axial magnetic field gradient sensitivity of 70 fT/(cm√Hz) at 1 kHz, in magnetic shielding. Josephson junctions and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with graphene as the weak link between the superconductors have been intensely studied in recent years, with respect to both fundamental physics and potential applications. Since the carrier density and resistivity of graphene are heavily dependent on the Fermi level, Josephson junctions and SQUIDs with graphene as the weak link can have their I-V properties easily tuned by the gate voltage. However, most of the previous work on superconductor-graphene-superconductor (SGS) Josephson junctions and SQUIDs was based on mechanically exfoliated graphene, which is not compatible with wafer-scale production. In this project, we have greatly improved the availability and applicability of graphene-based Josephson junctions and SQUIDs. We developed a method to fabricate Josephson junctions and SQUIDs with graphene grown by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) as the weak link. We demonstrate that very short, wide CVD-graphene-based Josephson junctions with Nb electrodes can work without any undesirable hysteresis in the electrical characteristics from 1.5 K down to a base temperature of 320 mK, and the critical current can be effectively tuned by the gate voltage by up to an order of magnitude. As a result, dc SQUIDs made up of these junctions can have their critical current tuned by both the magnetic field and the gate voltage. We also obtained evidence for ballistic transport in SGS junctions as short as 50 nm. We found that even for junction as wide as 80 µm, the critical current shows an ideal Fraunhofer-like interference pattern in a perpendicular magnetic field, indicating the distribution of supercurrent is uniform. We studied the definition of Josephson penetration depth, and proposed a new formula for 2D coplanar junctions.

Superconducting thin films of Nd
1−x Cax Ba2 Cu3 O7−δ (x = 0.03 and 0.08) have been grown on single crystal SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The statistical methods of Experimental Design and regression analysis were used to optimize the film properties and to understand the correlation between the growth parameters and film properties. The orientation of the films was investigated by x-ray diffraction. The surface morphology of the films was examined by atomic force microscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy. Qualitative and quantitative elemental analyses of the films were carried out using electron probe microanalysis. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was used to study the oxygen sublattice vibrations of the films. We describe a first-order gradiometric dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and its incorporation into a first-order directly coupled single-layer gradiometer. The gradiometric SQUIDs were fabricated from a single layer of YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7], with a silicon dioxide insulating layer and a gold crossover structure. For several gradiometric SQUIDs, with estimated inductances of order 67 pH, we measured parasitic effective areas in the range 1-2 μm2, approximately two orders of magnitude lower than for conventional narrow linewidth SQUIDs of similar inductance. For a single-layer gradiometer incorporating a gradiometric SQUID, we measured a parasitic effective area of 95 μm2. We demonstrate that for this device, the SQUID itself makes a negligible contribution to the overall parasitic effective area. Nanoscale Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) have spin sensitivities approaching that required to detect the flip of a single spin in close proximity. There is considerable interest in developing them for measuring the properties of small spin populations in magnetic systems. It is desirable that such measurements can be realised at sub-kelvin temperatures thereby allowing the study of magnetic systems that undergo phase changes at such temperatures. However, most nanoscale SQUIDs use nanobridges as the Josephson elements which limits the operating range to temperatures close to the transition temperature of the device. Well below this, the current-phase relation can become non-sinusoidal, and hot spots arising from the large critical current lead to hysteretic I-V characteristics. To extend the temperature range downwards, we have developed a range of nanoSQUIDs fabricated from alternative materials with lower transition temperatures including Ti/Au and Al/Ag bilayers patterned using lift-off and e-beam lithography (EBL). We report on their I-V characteristics, noise performance and behaviour in applied magnetic fields at temperatures down to 60 mK. We discuss theoretical analysis and computer modelling of the heat flow in the nanobridge structure, and consider the effects of bank geometry and kinetic inductance on the overall device performance. Finally, we present measurements of several magnetic systems: control lines, superconducting islands and ground planes and discuss the feasibility of magnetic measurements of novel materials of interest, including the heterointerface between lanthanium aluminate and strontium titanate.

Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect effects of temperature were the main drivers of the spatial distribution in the toxins produced by the cyanobacterial community, the toxin concentrations and toxin quota. Generalized linear models showed that a Toxin Diversity Index (TDI) increased with latitude, while it decreased with water stability. Increases in TDI were explained through a significant increase in toxin variants such as MC-YR, anatoxin and cylindrospermopsin, accompanied by a decreasing presence of MC-LR. While global warming continues, the direct and indirect effects of increased lake temperatures will drive changes in the distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in Europe, potentially promoting selection of a few highly toxic species or strains. © 2018 by the authors. Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Publishing the EMLS methods and dataset might inspire similar initiatives to study across large geographic areas that will contribute to better understanding lake responses in a changing environment.

- Abstract
Under ongoing climate change and increasing anthropogenic activity, which continuously challenge ecosystem resilience, an in-depth understanding of ecological processes is urgently needed. Lakes, as providers of numerous ecosystem services, face multiple stressors that threaten their functioning. Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a persistent problem resulting from nutrient pollution and climate-change induced stressors, like poor transparency, increased water temperature and enhanced stratification. Consistency in data collection and analysis methods is necessary to achieve fully comparable datasets and for statistical validity, avoiding issues linked to disparate data sources. The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS) in summer 2015 was an initiative among scientists from 27 countries to collect and analyse lake physical, chemical and biological variables in a fully standardized manner. This database includes in-situ lake variables along with nutrient, pigment and cyanotoxin data of 369 lakes in Europe, which were centrally analysed in dedicated laboratories. Publishing the EMLS methods and dataset might inspire similar initiatives to study across large geographic areas that will contribute to better understanding lake responses in a changing environment.

- Abstract
Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.g., anatoxin-a) and cytotoxins (e.g., cylindrospermopsin) due to their potency. Most studies examine the relationship between individual toxin variants and environmental factors, such as nutrients, temperature and light. In summer 2015, we collected samples across Europe to investigate the effect of nutrient and temperature gradients on the variability of toxin production at a continental scale. Direct and indirect effects of temperature were the main drivers of the spatial distribution in the toxins produced by the cyanobacterial community, the toxin concentrations and toxin quota. Generalized linear models showed that a Toxin Diversity Index (TDI) increased with latitude, while it decreased with water stability. Increases in TDI were explained through a significant increase in toxin variants such as MC-YR, anatoxin and cylindrospermopsin, accompanied by a decreasing presence of MC-LR. While global warming continues, the direct and indirect effects of increased lake temperatures will drive changes in the distribution of cyanobacterial toxins in Europe, potentially promoting selection of a few highly toxic species or strains., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

38. Pacemaker follow-up: its role in the detection and correction of pacemaker system malfunction.

The goal of pacemaker follow-up is not only to detect battery depletion but also to detect all malfunctions of the pacing system and, when possible, to correct such problems using programming. During one year, we discovered 61 such malfunctions in a clinic of 1065 patients (5.7%). These were more frequent in the first year (7.7%) than in the third to fifth years of follow-up (range 3.1-4.8%). The incidence rose again in the sixth and subsequent years (7-7.7%). Despite a significant occurrence of malfunctions (5.2%) among multiprogrammable pacemakers, the necessity for operative intervention for their correction was low (1.2%). Sensing problems were the most common (57%) and the most likely to be corrected by reprogramming (85%); problems involving loss of capture were less likely to be corrected by programming (38.5%). Battery depletion accounted for only 18% of malfunctions, occurring earliest in the forty-third month of follow-up. Pulse generator longevity of those devices reaching end of battery life during the study period was 68.6 +/- 16.7 months (mean + SD). We conclude that specialized pacemaker follow-up continues to be necessary despite improved pulse generator reliability and longevity. Indeed, with reprogramming, it presently plays an even more important role than in the past. Follow-up should be oriented not only to the detection of battery depletion but also toward a comprehensive surveillance of pacemaker system function.
