The occurrence of Yersinia spp. among wild animals has mostly been studied in wild boar, but it has seldom been in other species.

Abstract

Late blowing defects in semi-hard and hard cheeses caused by spore-forming clostridia (e.g., Clostridium tyrobutyricum, Clostridium butyricum, Clostridium sporogenes) pose a major issue for the dairy industry. With this study, we applied a multiplex PCR for the rapid and simultaneous detection of clostridia in raw milk for cheese production. Spore detection in milk usually relies on culture-dependent methods, among which the most probable number (MPN) technique is sensitive but time-consuming and nonspecific. We tested two PCR-based protocols: the one entailed direct milk analysis with results obtained within 24 h; the other included an enrichment step and gave results within 72 h. The second protocol was found to be more sensitive; it detected concentrations as low as 100 cells/L for C. sporogenes and C. butyricum and 800 cells/L for C. tyrobutyricum. Both protocols were applied to field samples (211 samples underwent protocol no. 1; 117 samples underwent protocol no. 2) collected from four dairy processing plants in Piedmont. The prevalence of C. butyricum (protocol no. 1: 9.5%; protocol no. 2: 23%) was higher than either C. sporogenes (0%; 9.4%) or C. tyrobutyricum (0%; 6.8%). Protocol no. 2 detected multiple targets in eight samples, indicating that more than one microorganism was present. Our findings underscore the importance of implementing preventive measures and early detection strategies to mitigate the risk of cheese spoilage due to clostridial contamination. Abstract

Like other group-living species, humans often cooperate more with an in-group member than with out-group members and strangers. Greater in-group favoritism should imply that people also compete less with in-group members than with out-group members and strangers. However, in situations where people could invest to take other’s resources and invest to protect against exploitation, we observed the opposite. Akin to what in other species is known as the “nasty neighbor effect,” people invested more when facing an in-group rather than out-group member or stranger across 51 nations, in different communities in Kenya, and in representative samples from the United Kingdom. This “nasty neighbor” behavior is independent of in-group favoritism in trust and emerges when people perceive within-group resource scarcity. We discuss how to reconcile that humans exhibit nastiness and favoritism toward in-group members with existing theory on in-group favoritism.

Abstract

We take issue with Glowacki’s assumption that intergroup relations are characterized by positive-sum interactions and suggest to include negative-sum interactions, and between-group independence. As such, peace may be better defined as the absence of negative-sum interactions. Rather than being a consequence of cooperation, peace emerges as a necessary but not sufficient prerequisite for positive (in) direct reciprocity between groups that, in turn, is key to social identities and cultural complexity.

Abstract

Humans operate in groups that are oftentimes nested in multilayered collectives such as work units within departments and companies, neighborhoods within cities, and regions within nation states. With psychological science mostly focusing on proximate reasons for individuals to join existing groups and how existing groups function, we still poorly understand why groups form ex nihilo, how groups evolve into complex multilayered social structures, and what explains fission–fusion dynamics. Here we address group formation and the evolution of social organization at both the proximate and ultimate level of analysis. Building on models of fitness interdependence and cooperation, we propose that socioecologies can create positive interdependencies among strangers and pave the way for the formation of stable coalitions and groups through reciprocity and reputation-based partner selection. Such groups are marked by in-group bounded, parochial cooperation together with an array of social institutions for managing the commons, allowing groups to scale in size and complexity while avoiding the breakdown of cooperation. Our analysis reveals how distinct group cultures can endogenously emerge from reciprocal cooperation, shows that social identification and group commitment are likely consequences rather than causes of group cooperation, and explains when intergroup relations gravitate toward peaceful coexistence, integration, or conflict.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Reptiles usually carry Salmonella without showing any signs of infection. In this case, an adult male corn snake died 48 h after eating a feeder mouse bought online. The snake and mouse livers tested positive for Salmonella, specifically Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Midway. A genome analysis revealed that the two samples were from the same bacterial strain, and both had genes responsible for the bacteria's virulence. This report is about a pet snake that acquired Salmonella from a feeder mouse and then died from septic shock. It shows how feeder mice can be a source of clinical salmonellosis in pet snakes, which can pose a risk to humans too. Reptiles are usually asymptomatic carriers of Salmonella, with the manifestation of typical clinical signs of acute forms in adult and non-immunocompromised animals being considered exceptions. In the present case, an adult male corn snake (Pantherophis guttatus) was found dead due to septic shock 48 h after consuming a feeder mouse purchased online. The snake's tissue samples and faeces were cultured for bacteria isolation. Microbiological examinations of the snake and mouse livers revealed the presence of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Midway. A whole-genome analysis of these two isolates showed a high correlation between them: they belonged to the strain type ST-357 for the classic MLST scheme and to the strain type ST 171322 for the cgMLST scheme. Also, a virulence gene analysis revealed the presence of stdB and STM3026 genes. This report conveys a case of food-borne salmonellosis in a pet snake, transmitted from a feeder mouse, likely responsible for the snake's death due to septic shock. Abstract

3D‐printable vitrimers processed by digital light processing (DLP) have been recently developed, based on the transesterification reaction of β‐hydroxyester structures from mono‐ and diacrylate monomers employed in the formulation. These materials show promising repairability and recyclability, in addition to other interesting features such as shape memory and shape reconfigurability. It has been reported that structural changes taking place due to transesterification promote network rearrangement and an enhancement of the thermomechanical properties. However, the elevated temperatures required for the network reconfiguration cast some doubts on their applicability in real‐life scenarios. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the thermal treatment on the thermomechanical properties and relaxation behavior of these materials and discuss the underlying mechanism explaining the observed changes. We identify some critical issues related to use of a monoacrylate containing β‐hydroxyester moieties, and propose solutions to overcome the most relevant drawbacks. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract

3D-printable vitrimers processed by digital light processing (DLP) have been recently developed, based on the transesterification reaction of ß-hydroxyester structures from mono- and diacrylate monomers employed in the formulation. These materials show promising repairability and recyclability, in addition to other interesting features such as shape memory and shape reconfigurability. It has been reported that structural changes taking place due to transesterification promote network rearrangement and an enhancement of the thermomechanical properties. However, the elevated temperatures required for the network reconfiguration cast some doubts on their applicability in real-life scenarios. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the thermal treatment on the thermomechanical properties and relaxation behavior of these materials and discuss the underlying mechanism explaining the observed changes. Abstract

Humans work together in groups to tackle shared problems and contribute to local club goods that benefit other group members. Whereas benefits from club goods remain group bound, groups are often nested in overarching collectives that face shared problems like pandemics or climate change. Such challenges require individuals to cooperate across group boundaries, raising the question how cooperation can transcend beyond confined groups. Here, we show how frequent intergroup interactions allow groups to transition from group-bound to universal cooperation. With frequent intergroup interactions, reciprocity of cooperative acts permeates group boundaries and enables the evolution of universal cooperation. As soon as intergroup interactions take place frequently, people start to selectively reward cooperation aimed at benefitting everyone, irrespective of their group membership. Simulations further show that it becomes more difficult to overcome group-bound cooperation when populations are fragmented into many small groups. 46. 1D Numerical Simulations Aimed to Reproduce the Operative Conditions of a LOX/LCH4Engine Demonstrator

Abstract

The utilization of liquid oxygen/liquid methane couple (LOX/LCH4) as a potential candidate to substitute hypergolic propellants and hydrazine in the next future propulsion systems has arisen an increasing interest due to the advantages offered in terms of low environmental impact, re-usability, cooling capabilities and relatively high specific impulse (Schuff et al. in Integrated modeling and analysis for a lox/methane expander cycle engine: Focusing on regenerative cooling jacket design, p. 4534, 2006 ). In this perspective, the Italian Aerospace Research Center manages the “HYPROB” research program, cofunded by the Italian Research and University Ministry, that has the objective to improve the national capabilities into developing engines, fed by hydrocarbons, that could be successfully applied as propulsion units for third stages of launchers for space exploration. The “HYPROB” program led to the realization of a LOX/LCH4engine named “DEMO-0A”, a 30 kN thrust class demonstrator, technologically representative of a regenerative thrust chamber assembly of an expander engine (Ricci et al. in Energies, p. 2190, 2022). The present paper describes the results of the numerical simulations performed by means of the EcosimProsoftware, aimed at reproducing the operative conditions, both cold flow and firing, of the regenerative thrust chamber “DEMO-0A”. An assessment of the capabilities of the software in predicting the behaviour of the demonstrator by modelling it with a 1-D approach and by considering different wall heat exchange semiempirical correlations has been done by comparing numerical results and the available experimental data gathered during both cold flow both firing test campaigns.
