Wellness programs have been shown to improve the health and well-being of hospital employees by reducing risk factors and promoting healthy behaviors. In the Arab World, there are no available studies on the number, nature, or impact of wellness services provided to healthcare workers.Objective: The study aims to assess the prevalence, characteristics, and components of health and wellness programs targeting hospital employees in Arab countries. It also aims to test the association of hospitals’ characteristics and the challenges faced by these hospitals with the availability of such programs.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted through an online questionnaire in English and Arabic emailed to directors of Arab hospitals registered in the Arab Hospital Federation.Results: Only 39.5% of the hospitals in the Arab region have an established wellness program. No significant association was found between hospital characteristics and the availability of these wellness programs. The most provided services for hospital staff are Flu vaccine (90.7%), pre-employment medical exam (79.1%), healthy food options (65.1%), and health risk assessment (60.5%), while the least common provided services are mental health (20.9%) and stress management (23.3%). The most common challenges facing wellness services (scale: 0– 10) are financial restriction (5.95), creating a culture of health (5.88), and motivating employees (5.56). Only 4.7% of hospitals provide incentives to participate in their wellness programs.Conclusion: In general, Arab hospitals lack a wellness culture, and more investment is needed in essential wellness services such as mental health, weight reduction, stress management, and smoking cessation.Keywords: wellness services, well-being, health program, Arab hospitals, hospital staff

We present the catalog of Interplanetary Network (IPN) localizations for 199 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) detected by the Konus-Wind (KW) experiment between 2011 January 1 and 2021 August 31, which extends the initial sample of IPN localized KW sGRBs (arXiv:1301.3740) to 495 events. Abstract

In the last years, significant research efforts have been devoted to the reduction of environmental impact of biocides and to the improvement of their effectiveness over time against degradation of stone artifacts. This work reports the spectroscopic characterization of two silica nanosystems, with different geometry and structure, loaded with a biologically-active compound, the 2-mercaptobenzothizole (MBT), for controlled antifouling release on the surface of outdoor stone artefacts. We have combined FT-IR spectroscopy in ATR mode and Raman spectroscopy to investigate the biocide loading mechanism in both nanosystems from the physical and chemical point of view. These techniques demonstrate that the geometry of confinement influences the loading of the nanoparticles and their interaction with the confining medium, with possible consequences in the biocide release rate. Moreover we have seen that the biocide interacts with the surfactant (cetrimonium bromide, CTAB) and tends to dimerize.

Abstract

Discriminating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) from acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE) may be challenging in critically ill patients. Aim of this study was to investigate if gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) analysis of lung ultrasound (LUS) images can differentiate ARDS from CPE. The study population consisted of critically ill patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) with acute respiratory failure and submitted to LUS and extravascular lung water monitoring, and of a healthy control group (HCG). A digital analysis of pleural line and subpleural space, based on the GLCM with second order statistical texture analysis, was tested. We prospectively evaluated 47 subjects: 16 with a clinical diagnosis of CPE, 8 of ARDS, and 23 healthy subjects. By comparing ARDS and CPE patients’ subgroups with HCG, the one-way ANOVA models found a statistical significance in 9 out of 11 GLCM textural features. Post-hoc pairwise comparisons found statistical significance within each matrix feature for ARDS vs. CPE and CPE vs. HCG (P ≤ 0.001 for all). For ARDS vs. HCG a statistical significance occurred only in two matrix features (correlation: P = 0.005; homogeneity: P = 0.048). The quantitative method proposed has shown high diagnostic accuracy in differentiating normal lung from ARDS or CPE, and good diagnostic accuracy in differentiating CPE and ARDS. Gray-level co-occurrence matrix analysis of LUS images has the potential to aid pulmonary edemas differential diagnosis.

Abstract

Italy is the Europe’s leading rice producer, with over half of total European production. The main rice area is in the north-western part of the country (Lombardy and Piedmont regions). In this area, irrigation of rice has been traditionally carried out by flooding; the introduction of alternative water-saving irrigation strategies could reduce water consumption, but their overall environmental and economic sustainability, as well as their social acceptability, should be investigated.An experimental platform was set up in the core of the Italian rice district (Lomellina, PV) to compare different rice irrigation management options: wet seeding and traditional flooding (WFL), dry seeding and delayed flooding (DFL), wet seeding and alternated wetting and drying (AWD). Six plots of about 20 m x 80 m each were set-up, with two replicates for each irrigation option. One out of two replicates for each option was instrumented with: water inflow and outflow meters, set of piezometers, set of tensiometers and water tubes for the irrigation management in the AWD plots. Proper agronomic practices were adopted for the three management options. Periodic measurements of crop biometric parameters (LAI, crop height, crop rooting depth) were performed and rice grain yields and quality (As and Cd in the grain) were determined. Data measured in the field, together with those provided by the farmer, concerning the agronomic inputs and the economic costs incurred for the three irrigation options, were used to assess their economic and environmental sustainability through a set of quantitative indicators. Finally, through interviews with rice growers of the area, barriers to the adoption of the AWD technique were assessed and ways of overcoming them identified. In order to support water management decisions and policies, data collected at the farm level are extrapolated to the irrigation district level through a semi-distributed agro-hydrological model, used to compare the overall irrigation efficiency achieved implementing AWD when compared to WFL.

Abstract

With extended life expectancy, the older population is constantly increasing, and consequently, so too is the prevalence of age-related disorders. Sarcopenia, the pathological age-related loss of muscle mass and function; and malnutrition, the imbalance in nutrient intake and resultant energy production, are both commonly occurring conditions in old adults. Altered nutrition plays a crucial role in the onset of sarcopenia, and both these disorders are associated with detrimental consequences for patients (e.g., frailty, morbidity, and mortality) and society (e.g., healthcare costs). Importantly, sarcopenia and malnutrition also share critical molecular alterations, such as mitochondrial dysfunction, increased oxidative stress, and a chronic state of low grade and sterile inflammation, defined as inflammageing. Given the connection between malnutrition and sarcopenia, nutritional interventions capable of affecting mitochondrial health and correcting inflammageing are emerging as possible strategies to target sarcopenia. Here, we discuss mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammageing as key features leading to sarcopenia. Moreover, we examine the effects of some branched amino acids, omega-3 PUFA, and selected micronutrients on these pathways, and their potential role in modulating sarcopenia, warranting further clinical investigation.
