Using Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN Magnetometer observations, we report the first statistical study of ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves at the Martian foreshock. The analyzed foreshock ULF wave events are observed in the 0.008-0.086 Hz frequency range, with nearly circular and elliptical left-handed polarization in the spacecraft reference frame. These waves are propagated quasi-parallel to the ambient magnetic field, with a moderate wave amplitude. All these properties are consistent with fast magnetosonic waves, most likely generated through the ion-ion right-hand resonant instability. In addition, our results suggest that the associated resonant backstreaming protons' velocities parallel to the mean magnetic field in the solar wind reference frame is $1.33 \pm 0.40$ times the solar wind velocity. The similarity between our results and previous reports at other foreshocks may indicate the presence of a common acceleration process acting in planetary bow shocks and that is responsible for this particular backstreaming population.

This study presents an interdisciplinary approach to analyse the distribution of cancer stem cell markers (CSCMs) across various cancer-affected organs using hypergraphs. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in cancer initiation, progression, and metastasis. By employing hypergraphs, we model the relationships between CSCM locations and cancerous organs, providing a comprehensive representation of these interactions. Initially, we utilised an unweighted incidence matrix and its Markov transition matrices to gain a dynamic perspective on CSCM distributions. This method allows us to observe how these markers spread and influence cancer progression in a dynamical context. By calculating mutual information for each node and hyperedge, our analysis uncovers complex interaction patterns between CSCMs and organs, highlighting the critical roles of certain markers in cancer progression and metastasis. Our approach offers a detailed representation of cancer stem cell networks, enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms driving cancer heterogeneity and metastasis. By integrating hypergraph theory with cancer biology, this study provides valuable insights for developing targeted cancer therapies.

We present results from a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts of gravitational-wave (GW) candidates from the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) network using the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT). The search includes 636 GW candidates received in low latency, 86 of which have been confirmed by the offline analysis and included in the third cumulative Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalogs (GWTC-3). Targeted searches were carried out on the entire GW sample using the maximum--likelihood NITRATES pipeline on the BAT data made available via the GUANO infrastructure. We do not detect any significant electromagnetic emission that is temporally and spatially coincident with any of the GW candidates. We report flux upper limits in the 15-350 keV band as a function of sky position for all the catalog candidates. For GW candidates where the Swift-BAT false alarm rate is less than 10$^{-3}$ Hz, we compute the GW--BAT joint false alarm rate. Finally, the derived Swift-BAT upper limits are used to infer constraints on the putative electromagnetic emission associated with binary black hole mergers., Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables

Eigenmaps are important in analysis, geometry, and machine learning, especially in nonlinear dimension reduction. Approximation of the eigenmaps of a Laplace operator depends crucially on the scaling parameter $\epsilon$. If $\epsilon$ is too small or too large, then the approximation is inaccurate or completely breaks down. However, an analytic expression for the optimal $\epsilon$ is out of reach. In our work, we use some explicitly solvable models and Monte Carlo simulations to find the approximately optimal range of $\epsilon$ that gives, on average, relatively accurate approximation of the eigenmaps. Numerically we can consider several model situations where eigen-coordinates can be computed analytically, including intervals with uniform and weighted measures, squares, tori, spheres, and the Sierpinski gasket. In broader terms, we intend to study eigen-coordinates on weighted Riemannian manifolds, possibly with boundary, and on some metric measure spaces, such as fractals.

Solar wind turbulence is a dynamical phenomenon that evolves with heliocentric distance. Orbiting Mars since September 2014, Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) offers a unique opportunity to explore some of its main properties beyond ~1.38 au. Here, we analyze solar wind turbulence upstream of Mars's bow shock, utilizing more than five years of magnetic field and plasma measurements. This analysis is based on two complementary methodologies: 1) the computation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) invariants characterizing incompressible fluctuations; 2) the estimation of the incompressible energy cascade rate at MHD scales (i.e., $\langle\varepsilon^{T}\rangle_{MHD}$). Our results show the solar wind incompressible fluctuations are primarily in a magnetically dominated regime, with the component travelling away from the Sun having a higher median pseudo-energy. Moreover, turbulent fluctuations have a total energy per mass of up to ~300 km2 s-2, a range smaller than reported at 1 au. For these conditions, we determine the probability distribution function of $\langle\varepsilon^{T}\rangle_{MHD}$ ranges mainly between ~-1x10-16 and ~1x10-16 J m-3 s-1, with a median equal to -1.8x10-18 J m-3 s-1, suggesting back-transfer of energy. Our results also suggest that $|\langle\varepsilon^{T}\rangle_{MHD}|$ is correlated with the total energy per mass of fluctuations and that the median of $\langle\varepsilon^{T}\rangle_{MHD}$ does not vary significantly with the cross-helicity. We find, however, that the medians of the inward and outward pseudo-energy cascade rates vary with the solar wind cross-helicity. Finally, we discuss these results and their implications for future studies that can provide further insight into the factors affecting solar wind energy transfer rate., Comment: 5 figures, 1 table, Submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
Plasma facing components (PFCs) in the next generation of tokamak devices will operate in challenging environments, with heat loads predicted to exceed 10 MWm$^{-2}$. The magnitude of these heat loads is set by the width of the channel, the "scrape-off layer" (SOL), into which heat is exhausted, and can be characterised by an e-folding length scale for the decay of heat flux across the channel. It is expected this channel will narrow as tokamaks move towards reactor relevant conditions. Understanding the processes involved in setting the SOL heat flux width is imperative to be able to predict the heat loads PFCs must handle in future devices. Measurements of the SOL width are performed on the high-field spherical tokamak, ST40, using a newly commissioned infrared thermography system. With its high on-axis toroidal magnetic field ($\geq$1.5 T) ST40 is uniquely positioned to investigate the influence of toroidal field on the heat flux width in spherical tokamaks, whilst also extending measurements of the SOL width in spherical tokamaks to increased poloidal field ($\geq$0.3 T). Due to the divertor on ST40 having a low degree of axisymmetry, it is necessary for a set of radial measurements of the heat flux to be taken across the divertor, made possible using an automated toolchain that fully incorporates its 3D geometry. These radial profiles are combined with the magnetic topology of the plasma to infer the width of the SOL, with both single and double exponential profiles of heat flux observed. A reduction in the heat flux is observed toroidally across part of the divertor, with preliminary investigations indicating that partial shadowing occurs, resulting from the separation between magnetic field lines and trailing edges upstream of the observed region becoming comparable to the ion gyro-radius., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to the Journal of Nuclear Materials and Energy Special Issue : Proceedings of 26th International Conference on Plasma Surface Interactions in Controlled Fusion Devices

This paper tackles the challenge of detecting unreliable behavior in regression algorithms, which may arise from intrinsic variability (e.g., aleatoric uncertainty) or modeling errors (e.g., model uncertainty). First, we formally introduce the notion of unreliability in regression, i.e., when the output of the regressor exceeds a specified discrepancy (or error). Then, using powerful tools for probabilistic modeling, we estimate the discrepancy density, and we measure its statistical diversity using our proposed metric for statistical dissimilarity. In turn, this allows us to derive a data-driven score that expresses the uncertainty of the regression outcome. We show empirical improvements in error detection for multiple regression tasks, consistently outperforming popular baseline approaches, and contributing to the broader field of uncertainty quantification and safe machine learning systems. Low-rank approximation techniques have become the de facto standard for fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs) due to their reduced computational and memory requirements. This paper investigates the effectiveness of these methods in capturing the shift of fine-tuning datasets from the initial pre-trained data distribution. Our findings reveal that there are cases in which low-rank fine-tuning falls short in learning such shifts. This, in turn, produces non-negligible side effects, especially when fine-tuning is adopted for toxicity mitigation in pre-trained models, or in scenarios where it is important to provide fair models. Through comprehensive empirical evidence on several models, datasets, and tasks, we show that low-rank fine-tuning inadvertently preserves undesirable biases and toxic behaviors. We also show that this extends to sequential decision-making tasks, emphasizing the need for careful evaluation to promote responsible LLMs development.

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
The scrape-off layer parallel heat flux decay lengths measured at ST40, a high field, low aspect ratio spherical tokamak, have been observed to bifurcate into two groups. The wide group matches closely with the scale of ion poloidal Larmour radius and follows existing H-mode scalings, while the narrow group falls up to 10 times below scalings, on the scale of ion total Larmour radius. The onset of the narrow scrape-off layer width is observed to be associated with suppressed magnetic fluctuations, suggesting reduced electromagnetic turbulence levels in the SOL., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
Spiral arms are some of the most spectacular features in disc galaxies, and also present in our own Milky Way. It has been argued that star formation should proceed more efficiently in spiral arms as a result of gas compression. Yet, observational studies have so far yielded contradictory results. Here we examine arm/interarm surface density contrasts at ~100 pc resolution in 28 spiral galaxies from the PHANGS survey. We find that the arm/interarm contrast in stellar mass surface density (Sigma_*) is very modest, typically a few tens of percent. This is much smaller than the contrasts measured for molecular gas (Sigma_mol) or star formation rate (Sigma_SFR) surface density, which typically reach a factor of ~2-3. Yet, Sigma_mol and Sigma_SFR contrasts show a significant correlation with the enhancement in Sigma_*, suggesting that the small stellar contrast largely dictates the stronger accumulation of gas and star formation. All these contrasts increase for grand-design spirals compared to multi-armed and flocculent systems (and for galaxies with high stellar mass). The median star formation efficiency (SFE) of the molecular gas is 16% higher in spiral arms than in interarm regions, with a large scatter, and the contrast increases significantly (median SFE contrast 2.34) for regions of particularly enhanced stellar contrast (Sigma_* contrast >1.97). The molecular-to-atomic gas ratio (Sigma_mol/Sigma_atom) is higher in spiral arms, pointing to a transformation of atomic to molecular gas. In conclusion, the boost in the star formation efficiency of molecular gas in spiral arms is generally modest or absent, except for locations with exceptionally large stellar contrasts. Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
Recent observations have demonstrated that giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are short-lived entities, surviving for the order of a dynamical time before turning a few percent of their mass into stars and dispersing, leaving behind an isolated young stellar population. The key question has been whether this GMC dispersal actually marks a point of GMC destruction by stellar feedback from the new-born stars, or if GMCs might be `immortal' and only dynamically decouple from their nascent stars due to stellar drift. We address this question in six nearby galaxies, by quantifying how the gas-star formation relation depends on the spatial scale for scales between the GMC diameter and the GMC separation length, i.e. the scales where an excess of GMCs would be expected to be found in the stellar drift scenario. Our analysis reveals a consistent dearth of GMCs near young stellar populations regardless of the spatial scale, discounting the notion of `immortal' GMCs that decouple from their nascent stars through stellar drift. Instead, our findings demonstrate that stellar feedback destroys most GMCs at the end of their lifecycle. Employing a variety of statistical techniques to test both hypotheses, we find that the probability that stellar feedback concludes the GMC lifecycle is about 2,000 times higher than the probability that stellar drift separates GMCs and young stellar regions. This observation strengthens the emerging picture that galaxies consist of dynamic building blocks undergoing vigorous, feedback-driven lifecycles that collectively regulate star formation and drive the baryon cycle within galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables; submitted to The Open Journal of Astrophysics (April 24, 2024); Figure 1 explains the experiment, Figure 2 shows the measurements, Table 3 shows the main result

Physics - Plasma Physics - Abstract
A new burn control scheme for tokamaks is described where the total fusion power is controlled by adjusting the plasma volume fraction that is packed into power dense regions. In an example spherical tokamak burning plasma, by modifying the plasma edge squareness the total fusion power is doubled at almost constant total plasma volume and fusion power density. Therefore, increased plasma squareness could be extremely beneficial to a fusion reactor and squareness control could be desirable for power load balancing. Experiments have observed the impact of increased edge squareness on modified core plasma volume, highlighting the practical relevance of this approach., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

The solar wind upstream of Mars's bow shock can be described in terms of Alfv\'enic turbulence, with an incompressible energy cascade rate of $10^{-17}$ J m$^{-3}$ s$^{-1}$ at magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) scales. The solar wind has more Alfv\'en waves propagating outwards from the Sun (than inwards) and a median Alfv\'en ratio of $\sim0.33$. Newly ionized planetary protons associated with the extended hydrogen corona generate waves at the local proton cyclotron frequency. These 'proton cyclotron waves' (PCW) mostly correspond to fast magnetosonic waves, although the ion cyclotron (Alfv\'enic) wave mode is possible for large Interplanetary Magnetic Field cone angles. PCW do not show significant effects on the solar wind energy cascade rates at MHD scales but could affect smaller scales. The magnetosheath displays high amplitude wave activity, with high occurrence rate of Alfv\'en waves. Turbulence appears not fully developed in the magnetosheath, suggesting fluctuations do not have enough time to interact in this small-size region. Some studies suggest PCW affect turbulence in the magnetosheath. Overall, wave activity is reduced inside the magnetic pile-up region and the Martian ionosphere. However, under certain conditions, upstream waves can reach the upper ionosphere. So far, there have not been conclusive observations of Alfv\'en waves in the ionosphere or along crustal magnetic fields, which could be due to the lack of adequate observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in 'Alfv\'en Waves across Heliophysics: Progress, Challenges, and Opportunities' (American Geophysical Union). Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We derive a generalization of the Ehrenfest theorem valid for open quantum systems. From this result, we identify three factors contributing to the evolution of expected values: explicit time dependence of the observable, thermal interaction, and quantum coherence. When considering the local Hamiltonian as the observable, we obtain an alternative version of the first law of thermodynamics. In some cases, the non-thermal contributions to the energy rate of change can be expressed as the expected value of a Hermitian operator, so the power performed by the system can be considered a quantum observable. As an application, the pure dephasing process is reinterpreted from this perspective.

We introduce a formal statistical definition for the problem of backdoor detection in machine learning systems and use it to analyze the feasibility of such problems, providing evidence for the utility and applicability of our definition. The main contributions of this work are an impossibility result and an achievability result for backdoor detection. We show a no-free-lunch theorem, proving that universal (adversary-unaware) backdoor detection is impossible, except for very small alphabet sizes. Thus, we argue, that backdoor detection methods need to be either explicitly, or implicitly adversary-aware. However, our work does not imply that backdoor detection cannot work in specific scenarios, as evidenced by successful backdoor detection methods in the scientific literature. Furthermore, we connect our definition to the probably approximately correct (PAC) learnability of the out-of-distribution detection problem.

This paper explores a scenario in which a malicious actor employs a multi-armed attack strategy to manipulate data samples, offering them various avenues to introduce noise into the dataset. Our central objective is to protect the data by detecting any alterations to the input. We approach this defensive strategy with utmost caution, operating in an environment where the defender possesses significantly less information compared to the attacker. Specifically, the defender is unable to utilize any data samples for training a defense model or verifying the integrity of the channel. Instead, the defender relies exclusively on a set of pre-existing detectors readily available "off the shelf". To tackle this challenge, we derive an innovative information-theoretic defense approach that optimally aggregates the decisions made by these detectors, eliminating the need for any training data. We further explore a practical use-case scenario for empirical evaluation, where the attacker possesses a pre-trained classifier and launches well-known adversarial attacks against it. Our experiments highlight the effectiveness of our proposed solution, even in scenarios that deviate from the optimal setup., Comment: Accepted to appear in the 27th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Statistics (AISTATS), May 2nd - May 4th, 2024 This article supersedes arXiv:2302.02216

Ensuring privacy-preserving inference on cryptographically secure data is a well-known computational challenge. To alleviate the bottleneck of costly cryptographic computations in non-linear activations, recent methods have suggested linearizing a targeted portion of these activations in neural networks. This technique results in significantly reduced runtimes with often negligible impacts on accuracy. In this paper, we demonstrate that such computational benefits may lead to increased fairness costs. Specifically, we find that reducing the number of ReLU activations disproportionately decreases the accuracy for minority groups compared to majority groups. To explain these observations, we provide a mathematical interpretation under restricted assumptions about the nature of the decision boundary, while also showing the prevalence of this problem across widely used datasets and architectures. Finally, we show how a simple procedure altering the fine-tuning step for linearized models can serve as an effective mitigation strategy., Comment: Extended version of the paper accepted to appear at the Forty-first International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2024

Physics - Chemical Physics - Abstract
Strong light-matter coupling between molecules and plasmonic nanoparticles give rise to new hybrid eigenstates of the coupled system, commonly referred to as polaritons, or more precisely, plexcitons. Over the last decade it has been amply shown that molecular electron dynamics and photophysics can be drastically affected by such interactions, thus paving the way for light-induced control of molecular excited-state properties and reactivity. Here, by combining ab initio molecular description and classical or quantum modelling of arbitrarily-shaped plasmonic nanostructures within Stochastic Schr\"odinger Equation, we present two approaches, one semi-classical and one full-quantum, to follow in real-time the electronic dynamics of plexcitons while realistically taking plasmonic dissipative losses into account. The full-quantum theory is compared with the semi-classical analogue under different interaction regimes, showing (numerically and theoretically) that even in the weak-field and weak-coupling limit a small-yet-observable difference arises.

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
The exquisite angular resolution and sensitivity of JWST is opening a new window for our understanding of the Universe. In nearby galaxies, JWST observations are revolutionizing our understanding of the first phases of star formation and the dusty interstellar medium. Nineteen local galaxies spanning a range of properties and morphologies across the star-forming main sequence have been observed as part of the PHANGS-JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program at spatial scales of $\sim$5-50pc. Here, we describe pjpipe, an image processing pipeline developed for the PHANGS-JWST program that wraps around and extends the official JWST pipeline. We release this pipeline to the community as it contains a number of tools generally useful for JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations. Particularly for extended sources, pjpipe products provide significant improvements over mosaics from the MAST archive in terms of removing instrumental noise in NIRCam data, background flux matching, and calibration of relative and absolute astrometry. We show that slightly smoothing F2100W MIRI data to 0.9" (degrading the resolution by about 30 percent) reduces the noise by a factor of $\approx$3. We also present the first public release (DR1.1.0) of the pjpipe processed eight-band 2-21 $\mu$m imaging for all nineteen galaxies in the PHANGS-JWST Cycle 1 Treasury program. An additional 55 galaxies will soon follow from a new PHANGS-JWST Cycle 2 Treasury program., Comment: 49 pages (27 in Appendices), 54 Figures (39 in Appendices), 3 Tables. Logic synthesis, a pivotal stage in chip design, entails optimizing chip specifications encoded in hardware description languages like Verilog into highly efficient implementations using Boolean logic gates. The process involves a sequential application of logic minimization heuristics (``synthesis recipe"), with their arrangement significantly impacting crucial metrics such as area and delay. Addressing the challenge posed by the broad spectrum of design complexities - from variations of past designs (e.g., adders and multipliers) to entirely novel configurations (e.g., innovative processor instructions) - requires a nuanced `synthesis recipe` guided by human expertise and intuition. This study conducts a thorough examination of learning and search techniques for logic synthesis, unearthing a surprising revelation: pre-trained agents, when confronted with entirely novel designs, may veer off course, detrimentally affecting the search trajectory. We present ABC-RL, a meticulously tuned $\alpha$ parameter that adeptly adjusts recommendations from pre-trained agents during the search process. Computed based on similarity scores through nearest neighbor retrieval from the training dataset, ABC-RL yields superior synthesis recipes tailored for a wide array of hardware designs. Our findings showcase substantial enhancements in the Quality-of-result (QoR) of synthesized circuits, boasting improvements of up to 24.8% compared to state-of-the-art techniques. Furthermore, ABC-RL achieves an impressive up to 9x reduction in runtime (iso-QoR) when compared to current state-of-the-art methodologies., Comment: Accepted in ICLR 2024

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
In the unconventional superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, uniaxial stress along the $[100]$ direction tunes the Fermi level through a Van Hove singularity (VHS) in the density of states, causing a strong enhancement of the superconducting critical temperature $T_\textrm{c}$. Here, we report measurements of the London penetration depth $\lambda$ as this tuning is performed. We find that the zero-temperature superfluid density, here defined as $\lambda(0)^{-2}$, increases by $\sim$15%, with a peak that coincides with the peak in $T_\textrm{c}$. We also find that the low temperature form of $\lambda(T)$ is quadratic over the entire strain range. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the gap increases from $\Delta_0 \approx 350~\mu$eV in unstressed Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ to $\Delta_0 \approx 600~\mu$eV in a sample strained to near the peak in $T_c$. With a nodal order parameter, an increase in the superconducting gap could bring about an increase in the superfluid density through reduced sensitivity to defects and through reduced non-local effects in the Meissner screening. Our data indicate that tuning to the VHS increases the gap throughout the Brillouin zone, and that non-local effects are likely more important than reduced scattering.

The Nobel Prize winning Black-Scholes equation for stock options and the heat equation can both be written in the form \[ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=P_2(A)u, \] where $P_2(z)=\alpha z^2+ \beta z+\gamma$ is a quadratic polynomial with $\alpha > 0$. In fact, taking $A = x\frac{\partial}{\partial x}$ on functions on $[0,\infty) \times [0,\infty)$ the previous equality reduces to the Black-Scholes equation, while taking $A = \frac{\partial}{\partial x}$ for functions on $\mathbb{R} \times [0,\infty)$ it becomes the heat equation. Here, we ``connect'' the two previous problems by considering the generalized operator $A= x^a\frac{\partial}{\partial x}$ for functions on $[0,\infty) \times [0,\infty)$ with $0

Achieving success in agricultural activities heavily relies on precise navigation in row crop fields. Recently, segmentation-based navigation has emerged as a reliable technique when GPS-based localization is unavailable or higher accuracy is needed due to vegetation or unfavorable weather conditions. It also comes in handy when plants are growing rapidly and require an online adaptation of the navigation algorithm. This work applies a segmentation-based visual agnostic navigation algorithm to lavender fields, considering both simulation and real-world scenarios. The effectiveness of this approach is validated through a wide set of experimental tests, which show the capability of the proposed solution to generalize over different scenarios and provide highly-reliable results.

The use of behavioural data in insurance is loaded with promises and unresolved issues. This paper explores the related opportunities and challenges analysing the use of telematics data in third-party liability motor insurance. Behavioural data are used not only to refine the risk profile of policyholders, but also to implement innovative coaching strategies, feeding back to the drivers the aggregated information obtained from the data. The purpose is to encourage an improvement in their driving style. Our research explores the effectiveness of coaching on the basis of an empirical investigation of the dataset of a company selling telematics motor insurance policies. The results of our quantitative analysis show that this effectiveness crucially depends on the propensity of policyholders to engage with the telematics app. We observe engagement as an additional kind of behaviour, producing second-order behavioural data that can also be recorded and strategically used by insurance companies. The conclusions discuss potential advantages and risks connected with this extended interpretation of behavioural data., Comment: Paper sent for publication on a journal. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
$GdTe_{3}$ is a layered antiferromagnet which has attracted attention due to its exceptionally high mobility, distinctive unidirectional incommensurate charge density wave (CDW), superconductivity under pressure, and a cascade of magnetic transitions between 7 and 12 K, with as yet unknown order parameters. Here, we use spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to directly image the charge and magnetic orders in $GdTe_{3}$. Below 7 K, we find a striped antiferromagnetic phase with twice the periodicity of the Gd lattice and perpendicular to the CDW. As we heat the sample, we discover a spin density wave with the same periodicity as the CDW between 7 and 12 K; the viability of this phase is supported by our Landau free energy model. Our work reveals the order parameters of the magnetic phases in $GdTe_{3}$ and shows how the interplay between charge and spin can generate a cascade of magnetic orders., Comment: 46 pgs.; 4 main figures, 20 supplementary figures

We present Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi-GBM) and Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift-BAT) searches for gamma-ray/X-ray counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) candidate events identified during the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Using Fermi-GBM on-board triggers and sub-threshold gamma-ray burst (GRB) candidates found in the Fermi-GBM ground analyses, the Targeted Search and the Untargeted Search, we investigate whether there are any coincident GRBs associated with the GWs. We also search the Swift-BAT rate data around the GW times to determine whether a GRB counterpart is present. No counterparts are found. Using both the Fermi-GBM Targeted Search and the Swift-BAT search, we calculate flux upper limits and present joint upper limits on the gamma-ray luminosity of each GW. Given these limits, we constrain theoretical models for the emission of gamma-rays from binary black hole mergers.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Despite the growing number of confident binary black hole coalescences observed through gravitational waves so far, the astrophysical origin of these binaries remains uncertain. Orbital eccentricity is one of the clearest tracers of binary formation channels. Identifying binary eccentricity, however, remains challenging due to the limited availability of gravitational waveforms that include effects of eccentricity. Here, we present observational results for a waveform-independent search sensitive to eccentric black hole coalescences, covering the third observing run (O3) of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. We identified no new high-significance candidates beyond those that were already identified with searches focusing on quasi-circular binaries. We determine the sensitivity of our search to high-mass (total mass $M>70$ $M_\odot$) binaries covering eccentricities up to 0.3 at 15 Hz orbital frequency, and use this to compare model predictions to search results. Assuming all detections are indeed quasi-circular, for our fiducial population model, we place an upper limit for the merger rate density of high-mass binaries with eccentricities $0 < e \leq 0.3$ at $0.33$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence level., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Misclassification detection is an important problem in machine learning, as it allows for the identification of instances where the model's predictions are unreliable. However, conventional uncertainty measures such as Shannon entropy do not provide an effective way to infer the real uncertainty associated with the model's predictions. In this paper, we introduce a novel data-driven measure of uncertainty relative to an observer for misclassification detection. By learning patterns in the distribution of soft-predictions, our uncertainty measure can identify misclassified samples based on the predicted class probabilities. Interestingly, according to the proposed measure, soft-predictions corresponding to misclassified instances can carry a large amount of uncertainty, even though they may have low Shannon entropy. We demonstrate empirical improvements over multiple image classification tasks, outperforming state-of-the-art misclassification detection methods., Comment: Accepted in ICLR2024

Physics - Chemical Physics - Abstract
Electronic Energy Transfer (EET) between chromophores is fundamental in many natural light-harvesting complexes, serving as a critical step for solar energy funneling in photosynthetic plants and bacteria. The complicated role of the environment in mediating this process in natural architectures has been addressed by recent scanning tunneling microscope (STM) experiments involving EET between two molecules supported on a solid substrate. These measurements demonstrated that EET in such conditions has peculiar features, such as a steep dependence on the donor-acceptor distance, reminiscent of a short-range mechanism more than of a Forster-like process. By using state of the art hybrid ab initio electromagnetic modeling, here we provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of tip-enhanced EET. In particular, we show that this process can be understood as a complex interplay of electromagnetic-based molecular plasmonic processes, whose result may effectively mimic short range effects. Therefore, the established identification of an exponential decay with Dexter-like effects does not hold for tip-enhanced EET, and accurate electromagnetic modeling is needed to identify the EET mechanism.

Computer Science - Machine Learning ,Computer Science - Hardware Architecture - Abstract
Logic synthesis is the first and most vital step in chip design. This steps converts a chip specification written in a hardware description language (such as Verilog) into an optimized implementation using Boolean logic gates. State-of-the-art logic synthesis algorithms have a large number of logic minimization heuristics, typically applied sequentially based on human experience and intuition. The choice of the order greatly impacts the quality (e.g., area and delay) of the synthesized circuit. In this paper, we propose INVICTUS, a model-based offline reinforcement learning (RL) solution that automatically generates a sequence of logic minimization heuristics ("synthesis recipe") based on a training dataset of previously seen designs. A key challenge is that new designs can range from being very similar to past designs (e.g., adders and multipliers) to being completely novel (e.g., new processor instructions). %Compared to prior work, INVICTUS is the first solution that uses a mix of RL and search methods joint with an online out-of-distribution detector to generate synthesis recipes over a wide range of benchmarks. Our results demonstrate significant improvement in area-delay product (ADP) of synthesized circuits with up to 30\% improvement over state-of-the-art techniques. Moreover, INVICTUS achieves up to $6.3\times$ runtime reduction (iso-ADP) compared to the state-of-the-art., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures and 15 tables

ClassyFarm is an integrated surveillance system for monitoring the Italian livestock farms on risks related to antimicrobial use (AMU) and resistance (AMR) and other indicators, such as animal welfare and farm biosecurity. In the framework of the CoEvalAMR network we evaluated ClassyFarm by using three evaluation tools: the OH-EpiCap, the FAO PMP-AMR and the NEOH evaluation tool. Evaluation was performed by interviewing representatives of ClassyFarm, National Health System veterinarians, farm vets, farmers, livestock industry entrepreneurs, academy experts in AMR/AMU. NEOH and PMP-AMR evaluation tools were applied twice (at 2 years interval) to detect changes in the implementation of the system over time, while OH-EpiCap was applied once. The three tools differ in evaluation objectives, depth of analysis, and time/training resources needed to perform the evaluation. However, each of them enables to gather different information, which can serve as a basis for the discussion of possible adaptations/improvements of ClassyFarm. Even though ClassyFarm has a limited degree of One Health (OH) implementation, the evaluation showed that the system has evolved from a barely biosecurity and welfare surveillance system towards a more integrated OH approach. A transdisciplinary nature is also emerging, with the involvement of the environmental sector. However, there is space for improvement in resource allocation, data sharing and communication. Beyond the structural evaluation, surveillance systems should be evaluated also in relation to cost-effectiveness and system impacts.
