- Abstract
This article presents the growing interest in the history, language, and culture of the Romanian people in Italy and France, particularly from the 1840s to the 1870s. This interest will be analysed within the context of the evolving political situation in Europe, characterized by the emergence of the Eastern question, national tensions within the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Russia’s expansionist policy towards the Balkans. It will also be explored from the perspective of the development of Romance language studies and the growing interest of French and Italian scholars in the study of the Latin origins of the Romanian language. Finally, this research shows how scholars made efforts to demonstrate the Latinity of the Romanian people, with the purpose of distinguishing them from the Slavic geographical and cultural space, and thus constructing a cultural (and political) barrier capable of obstructing the Slavic (and in particular Russian) advance towards Western Europe. What have been the main trends in Romance Studies in the last decades? What can be expected for the next decade? These are the two main research questions of this article. To answer them, a large dataset of over one million publications of research in Romance Studies has been extracted from German library catalogs. This dataset is analyzed through descriptive statistics and linear regression in order to predict the development in future years. Several fields of the respective catalogs are analyzed, such as the language and place of publication, publishers, e-book vs. printed versions, price and subjects.

While Ibsen's plays were seldom performed in Romania in the first half of the 20th century, historical sources highlight his strong impact on the national theatre practice. To address this contradiction, Gianina Druta approaches the reception of Ibsen in the Romanian theatre in the period 1894-1947, combining Digital Humanities and theatre historiography. This investigation of the European theatre culture and the way in which the foreign acting and staging traditions influenced the Romanian Ibsenites provides new insights into mechanisms of aesthetic transmission. Thus, this study presents a European theatre landscape whose unpredictability and uniqueness cannot be confined to essentialist interpretations.

Are anxiety or dread negative stages before freedom, a confrontation with humans' own mortality and finitude? Joana Serrado inaugurates anxiousness as a category of mystical knowledge in this innovative historical and philosophical study. Based on the life and mystical writings of Joana de Jesus, a Cistercian nun, intellectual disciple of Teresa of Avila, this study shows the cultural embeddedness of anxiousness: a feeling akin to the Portuguese term »saudade« (yearning, Sehnsucht). A mystical project that reshapes feminist principles of autonomy, agency and desire.

The article examines the influence of traditional aesthetic canon on the representation of women in African poetry and novels. It emphasizes the crucial role of an eminent Senegalian poet Leopold Sedar Senghor (1906–2001), the founder of négritude theory. Since the 1930s, he praised the beauty of a Black woman in his poems, odes and elegies. Senghor compared European and African aesthetic ideals and prompted African artists and sculptors to seek emotional effect instead of verisimilitude. He found his model in African sculpture and masks. Impersonalism as a major trait of African traditional ideal is inherent in the female images we encounter in African poetry and novels including those by Senghor. Female characters including protagonists in African novels lack any psychological nuances and are poorly individuated. The description of their visual appearance is very schematic: women are compared to terracotta heads of the Ife culture, female figures-amulets of the Ashanti people, etc. Impersonalism decreases literary value of African romances and reveals the presence of archaic collectivist consciousness that does not take into account the unique value of an individual.

FOREIGN language education ,TEACHERS ,FRENCH language ,LEARNING ,TEACHING aids - Abstract
Despite the growing number of academic publications discussing the advantages of translation for language learning, school teachers of French rarely use such exercises in their work with students, complaining mainly about lack of time and suitable teaching materials. Academic centres which educate future linguists offer more opportunities to use translation in practical French language classes. This article presents the opinions of students of Romance studies on the subject of translation in language learning after a semester of work with Janina Radej's publication entitled "Francuski w tłumaczeniach. Gramatyka 1-4" [French in translation. Grammar 1-4]. It was found that for students, translation is a new and attractive exercise that diversifies the language learning process. Despite the greater effort needed, students unanimously declared that they want to do this type of exercise. They recognised not only benefits in terms of linguistic improvement, but also the interdisciplinary value, since translation exercises in the language course also offer students preparation for classes in translation studies, and serve as a prelude for doing translations in the future.

Since Pierre Bourdieu, we have known that the body forms incorporated cultural and social capital. It is a commodity and means of production, a sign of belonging to a social class, a place where sex, gender and power relations are negotiated or a pretext for social exclusions and racism. The body is the object of punishments, sanctions and social control, a support for affects, obsessions and illnesses as well as a site of rebellion and resistance. The 19th century novels analyzed in the contributions to this volume tell all this. From the perspective of current body studies, we propose a new reading of the great stories from Balzac to Zola, via Mirbeau, Maupassant, Louise Michel, Georges Sand, Rachilde, Eugène Sue and Huysmans to demonstrate, through their texts, how the Images of the body and the policies of capital are part of the imagination and memory of 19th century French society.

Amalia Witt sheds light on questions of inheriting and bequeathing texts based on the extraordinary friendship between the author Montaigne and Marie de Gournay, one of the first female editors and authors of the early modern period. The focus of the study lies on the literary and social environment of Marie de Gournay, who, as an unmarried woman who lived alone and and was deeply interested in politics, followed an unusual path in life for the time. The analysis not only reveals the remarkable creative potential of this special connection, but also questions hegemonic role rnodels in literature that still have an impact today., Amalia Witt beleuchtet Fragen des Erbens und Vererbens von Texten anhand der außergewöhnlichen Freundschaft zwischen dem Autor Montaigne und Marie de Gournay, einer der ersten Herausgeberinnen und Autorinnen der Frühen Neuzeit.

The Covid-19 pandemic continuously affects people around the world, exposing the already existing social interconnectedness and economic interdependencies of our times. Revisiting pandemic fiction, as well as, crises narratives in literature and other cultural productions in general, has suddenly become a coping strategy to counteract the effects of physical distancing, but in particular the experiences of lockdowns. Interestingly, since the early stages of the pandemic in the Western world in spring 2020, numerous artists have not only dissected the reality of confinement across diverse genres but more so provided the public with uplifting content in various audiovisual formats – such as short films, web series, and music videos. In this article we will mainly take on the latter producing material about the pandemic during the pandemic, portraying the human need for connection, uplifting narratives and images. Across national, cultural, and linguistic borders, Corona Fictions (cf. Research Group Pandemic Fictions 2020) demonstrate how fragile our social fabric is while, at the same time, strengthening the feeling of solidarity, togetherness/ unity, and cohesion. Hence, this article will examine Corona Fictions music videos for their understanding and depiction of uplifting narratives in these challenging times.

This article examines eight anthologies (4 francophone, 4 hispanophone) conceptualized and composed during the first lockdown in the worldwide COVID-19 crisis, so-called Corona Fictions anthologies. Against the background of the classic anthological format, it describes the reasons indicated by the different editors for their anthologization endeavors, revolving around the three groups of categories of documentation and preservation, support and empowerment, as well as inspiration and preparation. Hereon, the article explores predominant topics, genres, and narrative situations in the Corona Fictions anthologies, supporting these findings with examples from the collections. Finally, it discusses what lessons about the COVID-19 crisis can be taken from them extending beyond literary studies.

The aim of this paper is to present a first dialectometric approach to the geolinguistic distribution of the Romance varieties using a new corpus based on the Atlas Linguistique Roman (ALiR) which is currently being developed at the Centro Ramón Piñeiro para a Investigación en Humanidades. However, the dialectometrization of ALiRwill allow us not only to analyze the linguistic distance among the varieties of Romania Antiqua, but also to shed light from a quantitative perspective on several issues that have historically raised controversy. Specifically, this paper deals with the Romance subgrouping of the Catalan language, an issue that has been recently reopened by Radatz (2012).

The substitution of the Occitan amalgam al, derived from prep. a + det. lo, by the morpheme el can be considered as one of the distinctive features of both scriptae and dialects of Velay, a domain located in the centre of the North Occitan area. Thus, the substitute amalgam appears in benefactive PrepP, where the morpheme al is normally expected. The phenomenon is little studied, but the philological update of the corpus of Occitan texts of Velay allows us to document and shed light on the emergence of the substitute morpheme. The analysis of the available dialectological data (ALF and ALMC) shows that Velay is not the leading centre of the diffusion of the substitute amalgam, but the central point of a more conservative area, playing the role of a mound witness of an originally larger area, straddling the North Occitan and Francoprovençal domains. The causes of this substitution are not phonetic or phonological, but are located at the morphology-syntax interface. Indeed, we will see that the substitution al → el took place at the syntactic level of Occitan grammar, based on structural and semantic identities in the expression of locality. We will defend the hypothesis that the substitute el is the import of the amalgamation [PrepP [P en [DP lo]], specialized in particular as a locative PrepP head. The substitution is based on the neutralization of the opposition between adessive and inessive functions, in principle encoded by a and en respectively. In order to allow spatial localization, the capture of the site element favours, according to our textual data, the preposition en, which presupposes, unlike a, a [+ Inclusion] feature signifying the expression of a surface and an internal vectorization. From these locative expressions, the amalgam el can become the head of PrepPs expressing, besides spatial and temporal location, directionality, manner or beneficiary. The analysis of amalgams and the genesis of substitution provides new elements for the mapping of locative PrepP.

Variationist studies on the subjunctive in Romance remain focused on dominant nation-state languages. Conversely, very little research focuses on the minoritised varieties (often labelled ‘regional’ languages) with which these dominant languages are in contact. The framework deployed for elucidating on change in the subjunctive has not yet been adequately tested in language endangerment. Using a novel sociolinguistic corpus of spoken Francoprovençal, the variationist analysis presented in this paper offers a preliminary investigation of the synchronic shape of the subjunctive in one variety, and assesses the extent to which social and linguistic factors influence variant selection. The results indicate a progressive weakening of a subjunctive mood that is increasingly lexically motivated. The available evidence suggests that a combination of tense-aspect-mood variation and morphophonological regularisation are contributing to the decline in subjunctive selection, with no social factors playing a role in the variation.

This paper addresses the issue of Gascon rhotic consonants, [ɾ] and [r]. It argues that Gascon possesses only one phonemic rhotic (/r/), rather than two (/ɾ/ and /r/), as previously assumed by the traditional approaches of Gascon phonology. The surface opposition between the tap and the trill is reanalyzed as a simplex vs. geminate opposition, i.e. /r/ vs. /rr/. After having located Gascon in the Occitano-Romance linguistic space, the paper presents the empirical evidence upon which the reanalysis of rhotics is based: the distribution and frequency of [ɾ] and [r] within words, their origin and diachronic evolution, the future and conditional forms of the verbs caler, valer and voler, the use of vowel prothesis before r-initial words, and the treatment of #fr- clusters word-initially. The paper then offers a phonological analysis using the autosegmental framework, according to which the difference between the flap and the trill can be quite classically represented as the association of the /r/ segment to, respectively, one or two prosodic positions. The last part of the article addresses more general issues pertaining to the phonology of rhotic consonants in Gascon and in the other languages of the Iberic domain from an areal and typological perspective: Catalan, Spanish, Galician-Portuguese, and Basque, whose rhotic sub-systems share a number of structural similarities deemed unique to this part of the world. We also discuss the structural link between initial gemination and prothesis occurring in Gascon, Swiss German, Campidano Sardinian and some Southern Italian dialects.

This article attempts to describe a monoclausal biverbal construction that is productive in a variety of Martinican Creole. We show that the combined verbs form a [V V-V] compound with additive semantics, which we propose to derive from [V & V] coordination by univerbation, a concept we adapt from Schwarze (2005), followed by morphological reduction. A comparative survey reveals that [V V-V] compounding with additive semantics is also attested—though less productive—in Haitian and Mauritian creoles, as well as in French. Although the [V V-V] compounds of our study verify a set of criteria commonly regarded as characteristic of so-called serial verb constructions (SVCs), they turn out to differ from documented SVCs, in particular those of Kwa languages which combine phrases rather than lexemes. We conclude that productive [V V-V] compounding with additive semantics in French-based creoles must have originated in French, and that its greater productivity in French-based creoles correlates with other independent features distinguishing these languages from French. The fact that [V V-V] compounding with additive semantics has a greater productivity in Martinican than in the other two creole grammars of our survey is an open issue for future research.

This article investigates the diachronic and synchronic relation between Tuscan lenition (Voicing) and spirantization (Gorgia) of voiceless Latin stops, both processes are postvocalic/lenition processes. Firstly, we set out to examine the conditions peculiar to Romance lenition (Voicing) of Latin voiceless stops from Medieval Tuscan to modern dialects. Secondly, Tuscan lenition/Voicing is compared to the local later Florentine–Senese spirantization/aspiration. Lenition is variously intertwined with the Tuscan Gorgia/spirantization. Both are positional phenomena in relation to fortition / lenition segmental scales, positional and prosodic parameters, melodic factors within words and across word boundaries. The article provides a structural description of the strong/weak consonants and their relations to the more complex objects in which they are integrated (the syllable and the foot), in order to state locality conditions/domain on lenition and locality in phonology.

In this study, I will provide a decompositional analysis of Llanito’s articles, both definite and indefinite, as well as the many fused preposition + article combinations. Prima facie, Llanito seems to show phonologically conditioned allomorph (PCA) selection, including a melodically-conditioned allomorphy triggered exclusively by /w/. However, taking a Strict CV approach, building on work on Standard Italian (Larsen 998; Faust et al. 2018), Galician (Ulfsbjorninn 2020) and southern and central Italo-Romance dialects, including Old Tuscan varieties, (Russo & Ulfsbjorninn 2021), I will show that the whole system of articles in Llanito can be generated without the use of allomorphy at all. Instead, all the surface variants are generated from the combination of a unified set of syntactic exponents fed through the language’s regular phonology. This analysis joins the Llanito phenomena to the research program started by Scheer (2016) where PCA analyses are reanalyzed in purely phonological terms.

- Abstract
The influence of antiquity, especially of the heritage of Greece and Rome on Polish literature, as well as of the Latin literature on the development of the national language, resulted in valuable monographs and studies by classical philologists. Zygmunt Węclewski became a pioneer in the study of Polish-Latin poetry. His achievements were continued by Ludwik Ćwikliński and Bronisław Kruczkiewicz. In the interwar period, Jerzy Kowalski became famous for his brilliant translations and editions of Adam Mickiewicz's Lausanne lectures. The greatest contributution from classical philologists to Polish literature came from Ryszard Ganszyniec. Also the Romanist Edward Porębowicz was an expert on Polish literature. His comparative studies included: the Baroque period, poetry of the Great Romantics, and poetry of the Young Poland. Another Romanist, Kazimierz Jarecki, contributed numerous articles devoted to Słowacki's works. Lviv Germanicists, Richard Maria Werner and Emil Petzold, showed many unknown connections between Mickiewicz's work and German literature. The only Lviv professor of the English studies, Władysław Tarnawski, published works on Cyprian Norwid and Jan Kasprowicz and popularized the works of Henryk Sienkiewicz. The overview of Polish literature specialists concludes with the figure of Jan Janów, a researcher of Polish Medieval and Renaissance literature and its reception on the Ukrainian soil. This paper presents a description of the Romanian neuter gender. According to traditional Romanian grammar, the Romanian language has three genders: feminine, masculine and neuter, a hypothesis that leads to several questions. One of the problems that arise first is the lack of its own gender-specific ending morphemes, hence the difficulty of a clear analysis. A neuter is identified as a masculine noun phrase if it is singular and a feminine noun phrase if it is plural, and it is almost reserved for the inanimate class with some exceptions. Following a diachronic approach, we face a perpetual morphological variation, including ending variation and numerous gender shifts, which seems to lead to the unpredictability of the gender class (Maiden 2013, Pană Dindelegan 2015). This article will focus on the synchronic analysis of the Latin suffix -ora, around which is concentered the issue. It will treat especially its bimorphy (Maiden 2016) which justifies the arising allomorphy and the second feminine plural marking leading to the formation of these plurals called neuters. We will evaluate its lexical status and the allomorphy’s derivational status as well as its grammatical relations which turn out to be compatible with the continuous morphological variation of the Romanian language. The topic doesn’t finish at these features. Various aspects that link the neuter to the feminine will be explored like the semantical-syntactic agreement between inanimate units that is almost realized to the feminine, the most surprising case being the feminine agreement of two masculine units. Another particularity is the semantic neuter (when the speaker doesn’t know the referent) that is realized in Romanian via the determinants, feminine singular or plural pronouns, despite other Romance languages that employ masculine due to the lack of neuter.

The aim of the article is to analyze the manipulative potential of the modern Italian-speaking media space in terms of creating a negative image of Russia as an international player. The sources of language material for the analysis are two authoritative Italian publications − Internazionale newspaper and Formiche.net Internet portal − characterized by the exclusively analytical content of articles and expert comments in the field of international relations and geopolitics, the authors of which are able to significantly influence the readership. The methodological apparatus includes a descriptive method and a method of semantic and syntactic analysis of linguistic units with a manipulative potential. From a pragmatic point of view, examples of evaluation predicates used by the Italian mass media to inform the reader about the actions of the Russian Federation are given. The article may be of interest to linguistic researchers dealing with romance studies, political linguistics, as well as to political scientists interested in Russian-Italian relations.

This article provides a detailed account of the year that Michel Foucault spent as Director of the Institut Français in Hamburg and as a guest lecturer at the Romance Studies Department at the University of Hamburg. It discusses the beginning of Foucault’s time in Hamburg, the courses he taught at these two institutions, his interactions with German students in his classes, and events with invited guests from the French intellectual sphere. But it also sheds light on the friendships he made in Hamburg, in particular with Rolf Italiaander; the completion of his own projects including Histoire de la folie and the translation of Kant’s Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View; and finally his nocturnal wanderings through Hamburg’s red light district, Sankt-Pauli.

This article presents the opinions of students of Romance studies on the subject of translation in language learning after a semester of work with Janina Radej’s publication entitled “Francuski w tłumaczeniach. Gramatyka 1-4” [French in translation.

According to the grammars of contemporary Piedmontese (based on the variety of Turin), the use of possessive adjectives with definite articles is restricted to the plural masculine ij mè lìber ‘my books, lit. the my books’, in contrast with such forms as mè lìber ‘my book’ (singular masculine), mia ca ‘my house’ (singular feminine) and mie ca ‘my houses’ (plural feminine). This behaviour of the masculine plural may be attributed to a functional need, i.e. that of distinguishing the plural masculine from the singular masculine. This paper aims to investigate whether the pattern described above is confirmed by both historical and non-Turinese data. The analysis will focus on similarities and differences not only between geographical varieties of Piedmontese, but also between such varieties and Italian.

The aim of this paper is to analyse how French teachers evaluate the didactic skills of students of the Institute of Romance Studies after their three-week teaching practice in a Polish middle or high school. We will be interested primarily in the descriptive evaluation written by the supervising school teachers, which affords an overview of the key competences of foreign language teachers in their own opinion (i.e. their personal theory of teaching) as well as of the terminology used to describe them and reflecting modern or more traditional conceptions of teaching. Our analysis will be carried out with reference to the competences highlighted in a self-evaluation tool, the European Portfolio for Students Teachers of Languages. Conclusions are drawn regarding not only the need to strengthen cooperation between the university and the school teachers to instil a reflective attitude, but also to strengthen the correlation between the tutors’ evaluation and the self-evaluation of thetrainees – not only to develop their autonomy, but also for formative assessment of both the student and the teacher.

Writing is a complex skill since it requires the integration of various competences, which is a phenomenon extensively examined and discussed by researchers. However, the relation among these competences and their mutual influence, particularly at lower language proficiency levels (A1-A2/A2+), are analyzed more seldom. This issue constitutes the primary interest of our research. Carried out in the Institute of Romance Studies at Warsaw University, it focused on the following questions: how to adjust the evaluation method taking into account the above relation in order to facilitate the understanding of the complexity of the process of writing and to increase its effectiveness. The main study was preceded by a survey, conducted among all the students of the first year, who were beginners, concerning their perception of the difficulties of writing as well as their needs and expectations towards the writing class.

What distinguishes an adventure novel from a historical novel? Can the same text belong to several genres? More to one than to another? Have some existing genres been overlooked? To answer these and similar questions, José Calvo Tello combines methods from Linguistics (lexicography), Literary Studies (genre theory), and Computer Science (machine learning, natural language processing). Located in the interdisciplinary field of Digital Humanities, this study analyzes a newly developed corpus of 358 Spanish novels of the silver age (1880-1939), which includes authors like Baroja, Pardo Bazán, or Valle-Inclán. Calvo Tello's key result is a graph-based model of literary genre that reconciles recent theoretical approaches.

- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present a first dialectometric approach to the geolinguistic distribution of the Romance varieties using a new corpus based on the Atlas Linguistique Roman (ALiR) which is currently being developed at the Centro Ramón Piñeiro para a Investigación en Humanidades. However, the dialectometrization of ALiR will allow us not only to analyze the linguistic distance among the varieties of Romania Antiqua, but also to shed light from a quantitative perspective on several issues that have historically raised controversy. Specifically, this paper deals with the Romance subgrouping of the Catalan language, an issue that has been recently reopened by Radatz (2012). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
