Purpose: The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the effects of annual maintenance over a 7-year period on the peri-implant health of patients rehabilitated with overdentures using clinical and radiographic parameters. Materials and Methods: In order to be considered for inclusion in the study, patients had to have been rehabilitated with overdentures that had at least two implants placed in the mandible and four implants in the maxilla. Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 comprised individuals who had undergone annual maintenance over the previous 7 years, and group 2 comprised those who had not attended any dental appointment over the previous 7 years. All patients were submitted to clinical peri-implant examinations and radiographic assessments. Results: Sixty-six patients received 396 implants of the external hexagon type, 132 in the mandible and 264 in the maxilla. Group 1 (44 patients with 264 implants) had a mean probing depth of 2.72 mm, while group 2 (22 patients with 132 implants) had a mean probing depth of 3.10 mm. It can be concluded that the mean of the variable probing depth is influenced by the presence of bleeding (P = .0005) and the implementation of maintenance (P = .0188), whereas plaque and local variables were not otherwise significant (P = .0605 and .0796, respectively). This article explores the prevalence of herpesviruses among the Yanomami indigenous people and its connection to Heck's disease. The study collected saliva samples from 81 individuals from the Yanomami ethnic group and analyzed them for human herpesviruses. The results revealed that several individuals tested positive for various herpesviruses, including HSV-1, EBV, CMV, HHV-6, HHV-7, and HHV-8. The study also found a significant correlation between the presence of Heck's disease and HHV-6 and HSV-1. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding the impact of viruses on indigenous populations and their unique manifestations. The study further examined the prevalence of herpesviruses among the Yanomami indigenous people and its association with Heck's disease. The results indicated that there was no significant difference in the presence of lesions during childhood compared to adolescence and adulthood. However, the disease typically begins before the age of 20 and spontaneously regresses over time. The study also discovered a rare connection between the development of Heck's disease and the presence of EBV, likely due to immunosuppression. Additionally, there was an association between Heck's disease and HSV-1, which is not commonly reported in the literature. This research underscores the need for greater understanding of how these microorganisms behave in indigenous populations and the development of public health policies to address the oral and periodontal conditions of indigenous people. Background: Platelet rich fibrin (PRF) is a biomaterial derived from human blood, part of a platelet concentrate obtained through a centrifuge separating it. Its use is quite common in medicine and dentistry for recovery and healing in surgeries and for tissue regeneration. The aim of the present literature review was to evaluate the use of PRF in dentistry especially in the installation of dental implants. Material and methods: Articles published between 1997 and 2018 were evaluated in Pubmed, Scielo and Lilacs databases. were evaluated 128 articles, of these 18 evaluated the use of PRF and were used in this systematic review. Results: The main advantages and characteristics of PRF are: the acceleration of the cicatricial process of bones and gums in dental surgeries, especially in dental implants; high potential for tissue regeneration; PRF is capable of transforming adult stem cells into specific cells for the formation of bone and gingival tissues; ability to regenerate the tissue vascularization network. Some studies point to the use of PRF as a single fill material, others still show the use of PRF in combination with other bone graft materials. PRF can also be used as a membrane for guided bone regeneration, where the strong and elastic three-dimensional architecture acts as a saturable screen that will cover and stabilize the grafted material, protecting the material and the wound itself, allowing the gingival edges to approach and, consequently, favoring their re-epithelialization. Conclusion: We conclude that the applications of PRF are numerous, but a knowledge of biomaterial, efficiency and limitations are necessary for its use in daily practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
