1. EBIC on TEM Lamellae for Improved Failure Localization and Root Cause Understanding

Abstract

Nanoprobing and subsequent electron beam induced current imaging technique are commonly used techniques for fault localization. The failing structure/device being electrically tested, the behavior of the electrical characteristics allows to give hypothesis of the origin of the fail, while single device testing enables to restrict the physical characterization to the failing structure - either using FIB/SEM cross-sectioning or for advanced technology nodes, directly with a TEM lamellae performed at pointed site location. In this paper, an experimental setup to perform electrical-like mappings on a TEM lamella is implemented, as an additional step to the existing nanoprobing-TEM flow. Such an apparatus offers the ability to observe indirectly dopants distribution in a TEM thin foil, allowing a direct complement from a TEM specimen. Moreover, when applied on thicker TEM-like samples, the technique ability to localize subtle defects prior their physical characterization is demonstrated.

Abstract

For the first time, CMOS devices on UTBOX 25nm combined with strained SOI (sSOI) substrates have been demonstrated. A 20% Ion boost is highlighted with these substrates compared to the standard UTBB SOI ones. Performance up to 1530µA/µm @ Ioff=100nA/µm (Vd 1V) for a nominal Lg=30nm with a CET of 1.5nm for the NMOS has been achieved. The viability of this substrate has been demonstrated thanks to our hybrid process, through threshold voltage modulation and leakage current reduction, with back biasing for short devices. In addition, cell current improvement of 23% in 0.12µm2 bitcell is noticed for sSOI at the same stand-by current vs the standard UTBB SOI. Finally, the functionality of hybrid ESD device underneath the BOX is demonstrated.

3. The Making of Counter-Internationalism. Political Violence, Strikebreaking and the Yellow Movement in Pre-1914 Europe

Abstract

The term "Yellow" is a synonym for strikebreaker in many European societies (gelbe, amarillo, giallo, etc.). In pre-1914 Europe, which remained dominated by monarchies, only in republican France this term was explicitly used by a nationalist armed group of strikebreakers, namely, the Yellow movement. In 1899-1901, the French and industrial society experienced an unprecedented wave of massive strikes. Historians saw this popular mobilisation as a prefiguration of the "great labour unrest", which subsequently affected the United Kingdom, between 1911 and 1914. The mobilisation of French workers and republican citizens in this fin de siècle took place in the industrial stronghold of France, along the German border. As a reaction, powerful industrialists created the first "Yellow" organisations. They explicitly conceived them as their "social movement". At the turn of the century, these strikebreakers were officially recognised by octroy. This differentiated the Yellow movement (with a capital "Y") from the many informal yellow organisations which emerged concomitantly, with the same antidemocratic purpose. This article provides an original analysis of the case of the Yellow movement. It explains how this Paris-based organisation developed by practicing political violence through strikebreaking, and why its transnational development was so important.

Abstract

Islet transplantation is a feasible approach to treat type I diabetes, however inflammation and poor vascularisation impair long-term engraftment. Here the authors show that incorporating human amniotic epithelial cells into islet organoids improves engraftment and function of organoids, through enhanced revascularisation.

Abstract

Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo are monitoring the sky and collecting gravitational-wave strain data with sufficient sensitivity to detect signals routinely. In this paper we describe the data recorded by these instruments during their first and second observing runs. The main data products are gravitational-wave strain time series sampled at 16384 Hz. The datasets that include this strain measurement can be freely accessed through the Gravitational Wave Open Science Center at http://gw-openscience.org, together with data-quality information essential for the analysis of LIGO and Virgo data, documentation, tutorials, and supporting software.

Abstract

Este artículo demuestra la utilidad de la obra inter­disciplinar de Edward Malefakis (1932-2016) para una historia agraria conjugando lo local con lo glo­bal. Las dos primeras partes se apoyan en los traba­jos sobre España y Europa de este eminente histo­riador e hispanista. A continuación, analizaremos detalladamente, merced a un amplio abanico de fuentes inéditas, un ejemplo de “oligarquía rural” ya abordado por Edward Malefakis en su gran libro sobre la Segunda República española (1931-1936) y su dimensión agraria. Este estudio de caso permite volver sobre el fenómeno masivo de la violencia política rural y, más importante todavía, poner de manifiesto la dimensión europea y global de estos mundos predominantemente rurales. Todo este ejercicio analítico descansa sobre los cimientos de un uso ecléctico de la herramienta heurística del “excepcional normal”. Al hacer dialogar lo cuan­titativo y lo cualitativo, éste aparece como un pro­vechoso útil historiográfico y epistemológico para articular lo local y lo global.

Abstract

Les pays de la Francophonie entretiennent avec la justice pénale internationale des rapports particulièrement ambigus. En effet, l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, sous l’impulsion de la France, qui détient en son sein une place historiquement importante, semble faire de la reconnaissance de cette dernière une de ses conditions d’adhésion, en l’érigeant au rang de valeur fondamentale. En cela, et alors même que cette organisation est initialement une organisation à objet linguistique et culturel, l’OIF revêt indirectement mais nécessairement une dimension politique affirmée. Ainsi, elle constitue un véhicule de promotion de la justice pénale internationale dans la politique étrangère de ses pays membres en permettant à la France de diffuser l’un des postulats fondamentaux de sa propre politique étrangère. L’utilisation d’une telle organisation, par la France, à des fins de politique étrangère n’est pas une nouveauté. Elle a en effet l’avantage de constituer une plateforme de discussion entre les chefs d’État des pays francophones adhérents sans équivalent dans le monde des organisations internationales. Pourtant, l’appartenance à la Francophonie, si elle incite formellement les pays à adhérer au Statut de Rome de 1998 instituant la Cour pénale internationale, n’emporte pas d’adhésion réelle à cet édifice juridictionnel. La Francophonie semble constituer un vecteur ambigu d’adhésion à la justice pénale internationale caractérisé par une adhésion qui masque, en réalité, sinon une profonde aversion, à tout le moins une certaine forme de méfiance, y compris lorsqu’elle sert des objectifs de politique intérieure. À cet égard, la justice pénale internationale semble cristalliser une certaine fracture entre pays développés et en voie de développement (en particulier la relation entre la France et ses anciennes colonies), jusqu’à constituer un marqueur de la recomposition de la politique étrangère des pays francophones.

Abstract

Traditionally confined to the pursuit of economic, social and environmental development objectives, official development assistance has moved into less traditional and more sensitive sectors. By making governance a major focus of official development assistance policies, Western powers have reinforced the strategic and diplomatic dimension of aid. In doing so, they have come up against the challenge of exporting Western-inspired governance models to countries whose historical, political, and cultural norms preclude their acceptance, forcing donors to adapt to local contexts. This is particularly the case in Vietnam which, while being one of the most important historical recipients of international aid, and thus to some extent financially dependent on its donors, is distinguished by its ideological and political independence, especially in the way it runs its domestic affairs. Now facing the challenges of good governance, the country is turning a new page in its relations with its creditors, marked by the difficulty the latter experience in supporting public policies of governance, given the sensitive nature of the subject. Traditionally focused on Millennium Development Goals or Sustainable Development Goals, aid in general, and French aid in particular, have moved into more sensitive areas such as governance. Choosing governance as their new target in developing countries, donors have strengthened the strategic dimension of aid. However, they have encountered several obstacles in exporting western governance patterns to developing countries whose history, social and political background are fundamentally different. This phenomenon is leading donors to draw up a more tailored governance aid policy in developing countries. This is notably the case in Vietnam. While it is one of the most important aid recipients in the world, Vietnam has nonetheless preserved its ideological independence vis-à-vis its creditors. Vietnam is now being urged to tackle governance issues in the country to unlock its growth potential, and has embarked on a new era in its relationships with international aid, characterized by the difficulty of implementing public policies inspired and funded by aid, given the sensitive nature of the topic.

Abstract

Reflective semiconductor optical amplifier fiber cavity lasers (RSOA-FCLs) are appealing, colorless, self-seeded, self-tuning and cost-efficient upstream transmitters. They are of interest for wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) based links. In this paper, we compare RSOA-FCLs with alternative colorless sources, namely the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectrum-sliced and the externally seeded RSOAs. We compare the differences in output power, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), relative intensity noise (RIN), frequency response and transmission characteristics of these three sources. It is shown that an RSOA-FCL offers a higher output power over an ASE spectrum-sliced source with SNR, RIN and frequency response characteristics halfway between an ASE spectrum-sliced and a more expensive externally seeded RSOA. The results show that the RSOA-FCL is a cost-efficient WDM-PON upstream source, borrowing simplicity and cost-efficiency from ASE spectrum slicing with characteristics that are, in many instances, good enough to perform short-haul transmission. To substantiate our statement and to quantitatively compare the potential of the three schemes, we perform data transmission experiments at 5 and 10 Gbit/s.

Abstract

An important challenge in optical communications is the generation of highest-quality waveforms with a Mach–Zehnder modulator with a limited electrical swing (Vpp). For this, we discuss, under limited Vpp, the influence of the waveform design on the root-mean-square amplitude, and thus, the optical signal quality. We discuss the influence of the pulse shape, clipping, and digital pre-distortion on the signal quality after the electrical-to-optical conversion. Our simulations and experiments, e.g., suggest that pre-distortion comes at the expense of electrical swing of the eye-opening and results in a lower optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). Conversely, digital post-distortion provides operation with larger eye-openings, and therefore, provides an SNR increase of at least 0.5 dB. Furthermore, we find that increasing the roll-off factor increases the electrical swing of the eye-opening. However, there is negligible benefit of increasing the roll-off factor of square-root-raised-cosine pulse shaped signals beyond 0.4. The findings are of interest for single-channel intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) links, as well as optical coherent communication links.

Abstract

The fashionable concept of « European Civil War » seeks to grasp the violent phenomena of socio-political radicalisations and polarisations which have been typical of the inter war period. Yet that said, those realities do not correspond to a civil war (which would imply well-defined front lines), nor are they only concerned with the interwar European context (precisely circumscribed between two World Wars, which determined the place of Europe in a world largely unified by and for it for half a Millennium). Thus, this article proposes a reflection on the capacity for articulation of the chronological and geographical scales of analysis within the concept of « European civil war ». First, we present an outline of historicisation of said concept in the current historiographical field, judged in terms of the « short XXth century », which had been so deeply and durably marked by the interwar context. Second, we insist on the still massive predominance of rural worlds in interwar Europe, and, thus, on their crucial importance as an explanative factor of the « European civil war ». This is all the more important since a relative and paradoxical historiographical silence surround said rural worlds. We conclude by comparing the concepts of « European civil war » (E. Nolte) and the « age of extremes » (E. Hobsbawm) by dealing with their explanative potentialities in terms of articulation of the geographical and chronological scales of analysis.

We present a comparative study of the capacity increase brought by bit- and power-loading discrete multi-tone (DMT) modulation for low-cost colorless transmitters. Three interesting reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) based colorless transmitter configurations are compared: First, an amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) spectrum-sliced source; second, a self-seeded RSOA fiber cavity laser (FCL) and third, an externally seeded RSOA. With bit- and power-loaded DMT, we report record high line rates of 6.25, 20.1 and 30.7 Gbit/s and line rates of 4.17, 10.1 and 24.5 Gbit/s in a back-to-back and in a 25 km nonzero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF) transmission experiments for the three transmitter configurations, respectively. In all the experiments, BER (bit error ratios) below an FEC (forward error correction) limit of 7.5 × 10−3 were achieved.

Pyrethroid insecticides induce an excito-repellent effect that reduces contact between humans and mosquitoes. Insecticide use is expected to lower the risk of pathogen transmission, particularly when impregnated on long-lasting treated bednets. When applied at low doses, pyrethroids have a toxic effect, however the development of pyrethroid resistance in several mosquito species may jeopardize these beneficial effects. The need to find additional compounds, either to kill disease-carrying mosquitoes or to prevent mosquito contact with humans, therefore arises. In laboratory conditions, the effects (i.e., repellent, irritant and toxic) of 20 plant extracts, mainly essential oils, were assessed on adults of Anopheles gambiae, a primary vector of malaria. Their effects were compared to those of DEET and permethrin, used as positive controls. Most plant extracts had irritant, repellent and/or toxic effects on An. gambiae adults. The most promising extracts, i.e. those combining the three types of effects, were from Cymbopogon winterianus, Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Thymus vulgaris. The irritant, repellent and toxic effects occurred apparently independently of each other, and the behavioural response of adult An. gambiae was significantly influenced by the concentration of the plant extracts. Mechanisms underlying repellency might, therefore, differ from those underlying irritancy and toxicity. The utility of the efficient plant extracts for vector control as an alternative to pyrethroids may thus be envisaged.
