This paper aims to propose operational algorithms to retrieve the total atmospheric water vapour content (W) using the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on-board Meteosat 8. MODTRAN3.5 was used to obtain simulated data in the thermal infrared channels IR10.8 and IR12.0, in order to determine the numerical values of the coefficients of the algorithms. The algorithm proposed for land pixels takes into account the SEVIRI observation geometry and the radiometric temperatures obtained in the split-window channels at two different times during a day and requires a minimum difference of 10 K in terms of temperature between the two situations. Comprehensive error analyses gave rms errors lower than 0.5 g cm-2 when observations were taken between the nadir and 50°. The algorithm is validated with in situ values, i.e. radiosondes and W measurements with a CIMEL CE318 sun photometer, both obtained from a field campaign, with rms validation errors of 0.2 and 0.7 g cm-2, respectively. Additionally, six stations all over the SEVIRI field of view were selected to validate the algorithm from radiosondes data, providing an rms error of 0.4 g cm-2. Concerning sea pixels, the linear atmosphere-surface temperature relation is adapted to SEVIRI and takes into account the sea-surface temperature, the atmospheric effective temperature, and the radiometric temperature in the IR10.8 channel. The total error obtained from this methodology has a value between 0.8 and 1.1 g cm-2, and the validation is carried out using radiosonde data from four stations near the sea, providing rms errors lower than 0.6 g cm-2. Background: To assess accommodation and spherical aberration changes during one year of orthokeratology lens wear and one month after lens cessation., Methods: A prospective, randomized, longitudinal study was conducted on forty-seven young healthy subjects at the Optometry Clinic of the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). Non-cycloplegic refraction, high and low uncorrected visual acuity, high and low best corrected visual acuity, accommodative lag, horizontal near phoria, corneal topography, and high-order aberrations were performed at baseline, 1-day, 1-week, 1-, 6- and 12-months of lens wear and after one month of wash out period. p < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant., Results: Spherical equivalent refraction (SE) was -3.23 ± 1.57D at baseline and -0.36 ± 0.64D after 12-months of lens wear, while accommodative lag changed from 0.53 ± 0.39D to 0.15 ± 0.29D after one year of lens wear. No significant differences were found when comparing SE at baseline and after one month of lens cessation (p > 0.05). A high correlation was found between the accommodative lag at baseline and after 12 M of lens wear. 22 out of 25 subjects with exophoria at baseline showed a significant reduction in the deviation at 12-months (p < 0.05). Total spherical aberration increased during all visits due to the lens wear (p < 0.05) although internal spherical aberration showed a significant decrease for 1-week, 1-month and 12-month visits (p < 0,05)., Conclusion: Orthokeratology lenses may change the accommodative response of the patient as a reduction on accommodative lag on exophoric patients and an overall increase on the internal spherical aberrations was found during treatment but return to nearly baseline values when cessation., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Purpose: To evaluate a new in vitro technique for measuring soft contact lens wettability using a nonmodified commercial videokeratoscope, the Medmont E300. To this end, the capability of different artificial tears containing hyaluronic acid (HA) to improve soft contact lens wettability in vitro was investigated., Methods: An experimental in vitro study was conducted to assess the wetting properties of three artificial tears containing different concentrations of HA (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%) on soft contact lenses. A saline solution was used as the control. For each solution, 15 hydrogel (Ocufilcon D) contact lenses and 15 silicone-hydrogel (Somofilcon A) contact lenses were evaluated. The in vitro wettability of the lenses was measured using the Medmont E300 with a self-developed technique, which involved measuring the tear film surface quality (TFSQ) mean, TFSQ area, TFSQ central, and TFSQ inferior., Results: Compared with the saline solution, all the concentration of HA (0.1%, 0.2%, and 0.3%) improved the in vitro wettability of both soft contact lenses by decreasing their TFSQ mean and TFSQ area ( P <0.05). Regression models revealed an exponential relationship between contact lens wettability and the concentration of HA for both soft contact lenses ( R >0.5, P <0.05). Purpose: To analyze the visual quality of a new multifocal scleral lens with a customized decentred optic zone compared to a conventional design by measuring visual acuity, contrast sensitivity function, stereopsis, subjective vision and comfort after one month of wear., Methods: Nineteen presbyopic subjects were fitted with two multifocal scleral lens designs: a conventional multifocal and a customized decentred optical zone design. All subjects wore both scleral lens designs for one month with a two-week washout period. The main variables evaluated included high and low-contrast visual acuity under photopic and mesopic light conditions, binocular defocus curves, contrast sensitivity function and a visual analogue scale (VAS) for subjective vision and comfort., Results: Comparing the two scleral lens designs, statistically significant differences in visual acuity were found, highlighting the improvement in more than one chart line (6 letters) for low contrast near tests under photopic light conditions with the decentred optics lens design. VAS questionnaire scores also showed a significant improvement in distance and overall subjective vision with the decentred optics lenses. Contrast sensitivity function showed an improvement with decentred multifocal lenses at all spatial frequencies measured, being statistically significant for 12 cycles per degree. Purpose: To compare visual quality, contrast sensitivity, stereopsis, subjective vision, and comfort between monofocal and multifocal scleral lens (SL) designs., Methods: An experimental, cross over and short-term pilot study has been performed. Nineteen presbyopic patients (51.9±3.8 years) with regular corneas participated voluntarily in the study and Onefit MED monofocal and multifocal SL designs were fitted bilaterally. Subjective vision and comfort, contrast sensitivity function, stereopsis, high- and low-contrast visual acuity (VA) at 4 m and 40 cm under photopic and mesopic conditions, and defocus curves were measured. Data analysis was performed with nonparametric tests. P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant., Results: Mean addition power of the prescribed lenses was 1.72±0.38 diopters. Multifocal design showed a statistically significant improvement for intermediate and near vision in the defocus curve under photopic and mesopic conditions (P<0.05), however, worsening in stereopsis (P<0.05) and contrast sensitivity for high spatial frequencies (P<0.05). Distance visual acuity (VA) showed significantly lower values under mesopic conditions for high- and low-contrast tests (P<0.05), and on low-contrast test under photopic conditions (P<0.001) with the multifocal design., Conclusion: Multifocal SLs showed better visual performance at intermediate and near distances without compromising distance vision under photopic conditions for a high-contrast test when compared with monofocal design., Competing Interests: G. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive, high-speed, high-resolution imaging technology based in the Michaelson interferometry. A near-infrared light beam is used to register the intensity variations for the light backscattered on each sample layer. Due to the high repeatability on corneal measurements, spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT) is the gold standard when talking about in vivo, non-invasive anterior segment imaging. Changes in the morphology of various ocular surfaces such as the cornea, conjunctiva, limbus or tear film with soft (SCL), rigid, corneal or scleral lens (SL) wear can be described by OCT measurements. For instance, evaluation of the corneoscleral region is essential on SL fitting. For orthokeratology lenses central epithelial thinning and peripheral thickening and their regression could be quantified with OCT after Ortho-K lens wear. Blood vessel compression on the landing zone as well as vault thickness and fluid reservoir (FR) turbidity could be imaged with OCT. Tear film evaluation on contact lens wearers is essential because its use could lead to variations on the biochemical components in tears. Changes in tear meniscus dynamics and several parameters such as volume (TMV), tear meniscus height (HMT) and turbidity could be determined with OCT and positively correlated with the instillation of different ophthalmic solutions with Non-Invasive Break Up Time (NIBUT) and Schirmer test values. This manuscript shows the increasing applicability of OCT technology for the in vivo characterization of contact lens fitting and interaction with the ocular surface in a faster, safer and non-invasive way. Future research will still allow exploring OCT imaging to its full potential in contact lens practice, as there is still a significant amount of information contained in the images that are not yet easy to extract, analyze and give clinical value., (Copyright © 2021. Objectives: The use of brief screening tools to identify inactive patients is essential to improve the efficiency of primary care-based physical activity (PA) programs. However, the current employment of short PA questionnaires within the Spanish primary care pathway is unclear. This study evaluated the validity of the Spanish version of a Brief Physical Activity Assessment Tool (SBPAAT)., Methods: A validation study was carried out within the EVIDENT project. A convenience sample of patients (n = 1,184; age 58.9±13.7 years; 60.5% female) completed the SBPAAT and the 7-day Physical Activity Recall (7DPAR) and, in addition, wore an accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X) for seven consecutive days. Validity was evaluated by measuring agreement, Kappa correlation coefficients, sensitivity and specificity in achieving current PA recommendations with the 7DPAR. Pearson correlation coefficients with the number of daily minutes engaged in moderate and vigorous intensity PA according to the accelerometer were also assessed. Comparison with accelerometer counts, daily minutes engaged in sedentary, light, moderate, and vigorous intensity PA, total daily kilocalories, and total PA and leisure time expenditure (METs-hour-week) between the sufficiently and insufficiently active groups identified by SBPAAT were reported., Results: The SBPAAT identified 41.3% sufficiently active (n = 489) and 58.7% insufficiently active (n = 695) patients; it showed moderate validity (k = 0.454, 95% CI: 0.402-0.505) and a specificity and sensitivity of 74.3% and 74.6%, respectively. Validity was fair for identifying daily minutes engaged in moderate (r = 0.215, 95% CI:0.156 to 0.272) and vigorous PA (r = 0.282, 95% CI:0.165 to 0.391). Insufficiently active patients according to the SBPAAT significantly reported fewer counts/minute (-22%), fewer minutes/day of moderate (-11.38) and vigorous PA (-2.69), spent fewer total kilocalories/day (-753), and reported a lower energy cost (METs-hour-week) of physical activities globally (-26.82) and during leisure time (-19.62)., Conclusions: The SBPAAT is a valid tool to identify Spanish-speaking patients who are insufficiently active to achieve health benefits.

Synaptogenesis is essential for the development of neuronal networks in the brain. In the olfactory bulb (OB) glomeruli, numerous synapses must form between sensory olfactory neurons and the dendrites of mitral/tufted and periglomerular cells. Glomeruli develop from E13 to E16 in the mouse, coincident with an increment of the neuropil in the border between the external plexiform (EPL) and olfactory nerve layers (ONL), coupled to an extensive labelling of phalloidin and GAP-43 from the ONL to EPL. We have tracked synaptogenesis in the OB during this period by electron microscopy (EM) and immunolabelling of the transmembrane synaptic vesicle glycoprotein SV-2. No SV-2 labelling or synapses were detected at E13, although electrodense junctions lacking synaptic vesicles could be observed by EM. At E14, sparse SV-2 labelling appears in the most ventral and medial part of the incipient OB, which displays a ventro-dorsal gradient by E15 but covers the entire OB by E16. These data establish a spatio-temporal pattern of synaptogenesis, which perfectly matches with the glomeruli formation in developing OB.
