Within the European project Story_S, supporting successful educational paths for Roma youth through peer to peer education, a participatory anti-discrimination campaign was built with young people of different backgrounds, in Milan and Rome. An intersectional approach is proposed to reflect together with young students on the topic of discrimination and to build, through the photovoice, a photographic campaign addressed to their peers. The photovoice process fostered group dynamics, reflection, and a photographic work, during two Awareness Raising Workshops of 3 days each. Discrimination is recognized and experienced by the youth on grounds of gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, in definitions of normality, poverty, online, offline and in the media. Metaphors of coexistence or of the beauty of diversity were represented through photos; also experiences of discrimination regarding housing conditions and public services were captured. Strategies to combat discrimination have been proposed and discussed by participants. Through the online and offline dissemination of the campaign, counter narratives were promoted and reached wider audiences, in an attempt to support anti-discrimination cultures and empowerment in schools and youth environments. By discussing both the process and the results of the photovoice, we contribute to the understanding of young people's perspective on discrimination and on participation to social change. The article explores the problem of the attitudes towards family and authority of the elderly shared in the Roma community and the changes in them. The example of two Roma neighbourhoods in regional cities (Sofi a and Stara Zagora) seeks to answer the questions: how these values change over time; which social groups in the Roma community are the bearers of these changes; and what are the experiences associated with them. The article presents the results of two quantitative surveys conducted in „Fakulteta“ district in Sofi a in 2002 and 2017, and a qualitative research in Stara Zagora within the action research approach. The main conclusion from the comparison of the two studies is that in the Roma communities in these two neighbourhoods there are social groups that manifest signifi cant (and to some extent similar) changes in the understandings of family relations. The changes are in the direction of autonomy and detachment from tradition. Roma Minority Youth across Cultural Contexts: Taking a Positive Approach to Research, Policy, and Practice is an important academic resource that has added to the scarce literature base on Roma culture. Through contributors from diverse backgrounds and utilizing relevant methodological approaches, the book bridges the gap between research and practice in the field of positive youth development (PYD), as applied to Roma youth. This text is an informative tool for students, practitioners, researchers, and policy makers from PYD and related fields.

The 2021 volume "Roma Minority Youth Across Cultural Contexts Taking a Positive Approach to Research, Policy, and Practice" edited by Radosveta Dimitrova, David L. Sam, and Laura Ferrer-Wreder, published at Oxford University Press, provides one of the most comprehensive to date research collections on Roma youth in Europe from a positive youth development framework. As a recurring challenge on Europe's human security agenda, the question of tackling the various marginalization (racial, cultural, educational, and financial) suffered by Roma youth is usually approached from a deficit-model perspective. The book at hand proposes an assets-centered approach, which functions under the premise that all youth have assets and resources which they can mobilize for their development. The wide range of empirical data collected from European countries under this overarching theoretical framework is a valuable tool for policymakers and researchers alike. The book is notable for its policy implications in the field of Roma integration, as well as through its theory testing by extending PYD models to minority, non-mainstream populations. This essay will focus on the social exclusion of Roma second generations living in the "camps" in today's Italy. Based on Nancy Fraser's conceptualization of social exclusion as a matter of social injustice, which is defined by three dimensions (recognition, distribution and political participation), this article suggests that Italian law, policies and practices have particularly prevented Roma second generations from participating in society on equal foot with their peers. However, for some of them informal political participation has represented a site of resistance from where to start to raise awareness on the need to foster their social inclusion. The present study aims to describe the influence of the education level on the experience of stigmatization and the life perspectives’ priorities of Roma youth aged 14 – 25 living in the Faculteta Roma neighbourhood in Sofia. The survey is based on quantitative questionnaires, adapted and/or constructed to measure the experience of stigmatization and life perspectives. The survey was conducted in two stages: in 2002 and in 2017 with a total of 256 participants. The results show that in 2017, the highest percentages of participants agreeing with the statements describing both aspects of the experience of stigmatization are registered among these with high school education due to their increased exposure to contacts with majority representatives in a context different than the Roma neighbourhood. Furthermore, the largest changes in Roma respondents in terms of emancipation from family and community influence are observed among Roma youth with high school education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article deals with drug use by young Roma as members of a marginalized population. It reflects on the use of collages and of metaphor analysis on images produced by participants within an action-research approach. Additionally, various stakeholders were involved in a participatory manner in defining research questions, priorities and strategies. In order to understand young Roma's perceptions on drugs, 23 visual focus groups and 58 life-story interviews were conducted in five European countries. In the focus groups, young people built collages to represent drugs and then explained their meanings. Metaphor analysis was used to analyze the data. With the biographical interviews, histories of consumption from drug users were gathered. Among the trends identified are the early onset of tobacco use, exposure to consumption of alcohol by adults, underestimation of the consequences of many drugs, addiction to injecting drug use in specific areas. Gender roles are strongly associated with patterns of consumption. Roma young people also express belonging and reclaim positive social status by using certain types of drugs and by sharing consumption patterns with non-minority young people.
