Eating disorders (EDs) are serious mental health illnesses, yet there is a need to better understand the illness experience to improve treatment outcomes. Qualitative research, and narrative approaches in particular, can elicit life stories that allow for the whole illness journey to be explored. This study aimed to explore the experiences of women with a history of an ED, identifying the life events they perceived were relevant to the onset of their ED through to recovery. Interviews were conducted with 18 women with lived experience of an ED. Through structural narrative analysis, an overarching storyline of childhood loss contributing to a belief of conditional acceptance, fear of abandonment and struggle to seek emotional support due to the fear of being a burden was identified. Negative experiences with the health sector were common. These findings have implications for the way medical professionals respond to help seeking and deliver treatment.

Biopesticides, pesticides based on living organisms or their extracts, are increasing in sales around the world, as synthetic pesticides are less available and environmental and health issues drive new approaches. Despite the increasing sales and use, there are still limitations that restrict more widespread uptake, such as slow to kill, cost, difficulties of production, lack of appropriate formulations, and reputation based on previous poor performance of biopesticides. Regulation continues to be problematic in many countries, as the processes are designed for evaluating chemistry rather than live organisms. Biopesticides do have a bright future, given the amount of investment currently in the area, improving products and growing need.

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a worldwide spread condition that affects pigs in nursery and/or fattening units, and is considered to have a severe economic impact on swine production. The main clinical sign of PMWS is wasting, but can also include pallor of the skin, icterus, respiratory distress and diarrhoea. The main essential infectious agent for PMWS development is porcinecircovirus type 2 (PCV2), but the exact cause of PMWS is still unclear.PCV2 is present in most pig herds, but the occurrence of PMWS is more sporadic, and it is been difficult to reproduce PMWS by inoculating PCV2 alone. However, studies where co-infections have been applied have been more successful. Based on this, we modeled PMWS development based on longitudinal data on antibodies and PMWS status from herds in Denmark and Spain, where presence of a range of pathogens were considered as explanatory variables in the form of maternal immunity and the occurrence of seroconversion against the considered pathogens. However, maternal immunity could not be measured from mother animals due to cross fostering, no time points for seroconversion was available, and no case/control status could be assigned as PMWS do not have an ‘infectious period’ after which animals may be assigned control status. The talk will concentrate on the framework in which this was handled, which may be translated to similar settings for similar studies. We found that seroconversion towards PCV2 and Lawsonia intracellularis had a significant impact on PMWS in the Danish data, but it appears that the effect is positive, in the sense that seroconverted animals were less likely to develop PMWS. A number of maternal immunities also significantly affected PMWS development. Furthermore it was uncovered that most of these effects would not have been detected if pathogens were considered by themselves and not simultaneously.

A 12-year-old girl first presented to her family physician in January 1991 with an episode of tachycardia and dyspnea. Her mother described the patient’s appearance during the event as “like a statue,” extremely pale, gray, and lethargic. An ECG at that time showed sinus tachycardia with a rate of 143 bpm and T-wave inversion in lead III (Fig 1⇓). Oxygen was administered in the office, and a trial of propranolol 10 mg/d was begun. Figure 1. ECG obtained in office of family physician as symptoms were resolving. The girl’s symptoms had first occurred 6 months earlier and were of variable duration and severity. Tachycardia would persist for several hours and be associated with dyspnea and pallor. During the episode, she would develop generalized myalgia, weakness, and fatigue and then sleep for 2 to 7 hours. There was no associated chest pain, dizziness, or presyncope. Episodes occurred one to three times per week, in the afternoon, and were unrelated to activity. She had decreased exercise tolerance compared with her peers. She was referred to a pediatric cardiologist for further evaluation. A Holter recording was normal. Her cardiac examination was normal; however, an echocardiogram reportedly showed discontinuity of the atrial septum, with left-to-right flow across the interatrial septum by pulsed Doppler and color flow Doppler. The diagnosis of secundum atrial septal defect was made and a cardiac catheterization recommended, but the family declined. Propranolol was discontinued, in part because of a history of asthma. Verapamil was started but was soon discontinued because of dizziness. The family then sought a second opinion. The patient was the product of a 31-week gestation, with delivery by emergency cesarean section for preterm labor with fetal distress. Birth weight was 4 lb 1 oz. She remained hospitalized for 1 month as a neonate, requiring ventilation and oxygen administration. …
