Cosmological information from weak lensing surveys is maximised by dividing source galaxies into tomographic sub-samples for which the redshift distributions are estimated. Uncertainties on these redshift distributions must be correctly propagated into the cosmological results. We present hyperrank, a new method for marginalising over redshift distribution uncertainties in cosmological analyses, using discrete samples from the space of all possible redshift distributions. This is demonstrated in contrast to previous highly simplified parametric models of the redshift distribution uncertainty. In hyperrank the set of proposed redshift distributions is ranked according to a small (in this work between one and four) number of summary values, which are then sampled along with other nuisance parameters and cosmological parameters in the Monte Carlo chain used for inference. This can be regarded as a general method for marginalising over discrete realisations of data vector variation with nuisance parameters, which can consequently be sampled separately to the main parameters of interest, allowing for increased computational efficiency. We focus on the case of weak lensing cosmic shear analyses and demonstrate our method using simulations made for the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We show the method can correctly and efficiently marginalise over a range of models for the redshift distribution uncertainty. SkyPy is an open-source Python package for simulating the astrophysical sky. It comprises a library of physical and empirical models across a range of observables and a command-line script to run end-to-end simulations. The library provides functions that sample realisations of sources and their associated properties from probability distributions. Simulation pipelines are constructed from these models using a YAML-based configuration syntax, while task scheduling and data dependencies are handled internally and the modular design allows users to interface with external software. SkyPy is developed and maintained by a diverse community of domain experts with a focus on software sustainability and interoperability. By fostering development, it provides a framework for correlated simulations of a range of cosmological probes including galaxy populations, large scale structure, the cosmic microwave background, supernovae and gravitational waves. Version 0.4 implements functions that model various properties of galaxies including luminosity functions, redshift distributions and optical photometry from spectral energy distribution templates. Future releases will provide additional modules, for example, to simulate populations of dark matter halos and model the galaxy-halo connection, making use of existing software packages from the astrophysics community where appropriate., Comment: Published by JOSS. We investigate the impact of prior models on the upper bound of the sum of neutrino masses, $\sum m_{\nu}$. We use data from Large Scale Structure of galaxies, Cosmic Microwave Background, Type Ia SuperNovae, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We probe physically motivated neutrino mass models (respecting oscillation experiment constraints) and compare them to constraints using standard cosmological approximations. The former give a consistent upper bound of $\sum m_{\nu} \lesssim 0.26$ eV ($95\%$ CI) and yields a strong competitive upper bound for the lightest neutrino mass species, $m_0^{\nu} < 0.086$ eV ($95\%$ CI). By contrast one of the approximations, which is somewhat inconsistent with oscillation experiments, yields an upper bound of $\sum m_{\nu} \lesssim 0.15$ eV ($95\%$ CI), which differs substantially from the former upper bound. We, therefore, argue that cosmological neutrino mass and hierarchy determination should be pursued using physically motivated models since approximations might lead to incorrect and nonphysical upper bounds., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We constrain cosmological parameters by analysing the angular power spectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR12 galaxies, a spectroscopic follow-up of around 1.3 million SDSS galaxies over 9,376 deg$^2$ with an effective volume of $\sim 6.5$ (Gpc $h^{-1}$)$^3$ in the redshift range $0.15 \leq z < 0.80$. We split this sample into 13 tomographic bins ($\Delta z = 0.05$); angular power spectra were calculated using a Pseudo-$C_{\ell}$ estimator, and covariance matrices were estimated using log-normal simulated maps. Cosmological constraints obtained from these data were combined with constraints from Planck CMB experiment as well as the JLA supernovae compilation. Considering a $w$CDM cosmological model measured on scales up to $k_{max} = 0.07h$ Mpc$^{-1}$, we constrain a constant dark energy equation-of-state with a $\sim 4\%$ error at the 1-$\sigma$ level: $w_0 = -0.993^{+0.046}_{-0.043}$, together with $\Omega_m = 0.330\pm 0.012$, $\Omega_b = 0.0505 \pm 0.002$, $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3} = 0.863 \pm 0.016$, and $h = 0.661 \pm 0.012$. For the same combination of datasets, but now considering a $\Lambda$CDM model with massive neutrinos and the same scale cut, we find: $\Omega_m = 0.328 \pm 0.009$, $\Omega_b = 0.05017^{+0.0009}_{-0.0008}$, $S_8 = 0.862 \pm 0.017$, and $h = 0.663^{+0.006}_{-0.007}$ and a 95\% credible interval (CI) upper limit of $\sum m_{\nu} < 0.14$ eV for a normal hierarchy. These results are competitive if not better than standard analyses with the same dataset, and demonstrate this should be a method of choice for future surveys, opening the door for their full exploitation in cross-correlations probes., Comment: 28 pages, 28 figures, 3 appendices

A rich variety of molecular species has now been observed towards hot cores in star forming regions and in the interstellar medium. An increasing body of evidence from millimetre interferometers suggests that many of these form at the interfaces between protostellar outflows and their natal molecular clouds. However, current models have remained unable to explain the origin of the observational bias towards wide-angled "brandy snifter" shaped outflows over narrower "champagne flute" shapes in carbon monoxide imaging. Furthermore, these wide-angled systems exhibit unusually high abundances of the molecular ion HCO$^+$. We present results from a chemo-dynamic model of such regions where a rich chemistry arises naturally as a result of turbulent mixing between cold, dense molecular gas and the hot, ionized outflow material. The injecta drives a rich and rapid ion-neutral chemistry in qualitative and quantitative agreement with the observations. The observational bias towards wide-angled outflows is explained naturally by the geometry-dependent ion injection rate causing rapid dissociation of CO in the younger systems., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 12 pages, 8 Figures

We investigate the importance of the shielding of chemical photorates by molecular hydrogen photodissociation lines and the carbon photoionization continuum deep within models of photon dominated regions. In particular, the photodissociation of N2 and CN are significantly shielded by the H2 photodissociation line spectrum. We model this by switching off the photodissociation channels for these species behind the HI to H2 transition. We also model the shielding effect of the carbon photoionization continuum as an attenuation of the incident radiation field shortwards of 1102\AA. Using recent line and continuum cross section data, we present calculations of the direct and cosmic ray induced photorates for a range of species, as well as optically thick shielding factors for the carbon continuum. Applying these to a time dependent PDR model we see enrichments in the abundances of N2, N2H+, NH3 and CN by factors of roughly 3-100 in the extinction band Av=2.0 to Av=4.0 for a range of environments. While the precise quantitative results of this study are limited by the simplicity of our model, they highlight the importance of these mutual shielding effects, neither of which has been discussed in recent models., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 9 Pages, 2 Figures

The relationship between government and Bishop College in regard to federal funding and the effect of federal compliance is examined. The four significant impact components that comprise the study are historical impact, statistical impact, federal impact (positive and negative aspects), and operational/functional impact. Basic instruments used to secure input from the college community and participants responsible for the implementation of programs supported by federal funds were these: a questionnaire on Perceptions Regarding Federal Program Support; a questionnaire on Program Impact for Federally Funded Programs; and a table of statistical information regarding Bishop College and federal support. Four issues surfaced from the study: (1) the growth of the college because of federal funding; (2) an analysis of the welfare syndrome versus survival; (3) the benefits accrued to students and society; and (4) the impact of federal funding on administrative/teaching functions. Several recommendations are offered, such as that special consideration be given to Bishop College and other black colleges for special grants; that evaluation/monitoring mechanisms be improved to reduce excessive paper work; that there be a 50 percent forgiveness of loans received to construct facilities over the next ten years; and that planning grants be provided for continuous upgrading of planning.
