Introduction: Anecdotal reports and limited reports suggest a possible link between activities involving rapid acceleration and retinal detachment. We present two novel such cases and review existing literature to investigate the plausibility of this association and delineate in what populations such an association may be more likely. Case Presentation: We report 2 cases of retinal detachment following roller coaster riding. The first, a 24-year-old woman with a family history of retinal detachment, presented with floaters after consecutive rides and was found to have an inferior temporal macula-sparing retinal detachment with associated retinal breaks. The second case, a 25-year-old female with a history of high myopia, presented with visual field defect and was found to have a macula-on retinal detachment with an accompanying tear at the edge of an area of lattice degeneration. Both were successfully treated with pneumatic retinopexy followed by laser retinopexy. Conclusion: Rapid acceleration/deceleration forces, such as those experienced on roller coasters, could potentially lead to retinal detachment. Structural predisposition is likely necessary for acceleration/deceleration injury to lead to retinal detachment, with all known cases having risk factors, including high myopia and positive family history. These same forces in eyes without structural predisposition have resulted in hemorrhage, but not detachment.

Chronic subdural haematoma is a common neurological condition especially among the elderly population. Its presentation can be unspecific but often attributed to pressure, cortical irritation, and/or vascular compromise. In the patients' cohort presented below, we have a series of cases where clinical history and examination did not result in an initial clinical diagnosis or suspicion of chronic subdural haematoma, with the diagnosis made only after brain imaging. We reviewed the literature regarding the aetiopathogenesis and clinical features of our patient cohort, which included a young woman with isolated right ptosis and pupillary dilatation, an elderly man with paraplegia, another elderly man with isolated right foot drop, and a young military man with no history of trauma. Our series re-emphasizes the sometimes non-specific and varied clinical presentation of chronic subdural haematoma. This article, published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity & Metabolism, explores the phenomenon of the "roller coaster" effect in individuals with type 1 diabetes. The roller coaster effect refers to highly variable glucose profiles characterized by alternating periods of high and low glucose levels. The study analyzed data from 159 individuals with type 1 diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring devices. The findings showed that roller coaster events were associated with high glucose variation and increased time spent in hypoglycemia. Polymeric materials find extensive applications across various engineering sectors. Among these, a particularly critical application for these materials is in the field of roller coasters. The wheels are typically made with an aluminum hub and a dense polyurethane coating, which, being in contact with the track, endures dynamic loads at high speeds. Due to the viscoelastic behavior typical of polymeric materials, these loads induce overheating of the coating leading to rapid degradation of the wheel. This results in machine downtime and a significant waste of time and money. In this manuscript, a methodology for finite element thermal-structural analysis has been developed. This method allows for the rapid evaluation of temperatures reached during operational cycles if compared to classical coupled-field thermal-structural analysis. The proposed methodology proves to be useful in selecting the appropriate type of wheels during the design phase requiring short computational time. The study first involved the development of the methodology, followed by validation through a comparison of analysis results with data obtained from experimental tests conducted by the manufacturer. • Development of a FE method for temperature evaluation of polyurethane coated wheels. • The proposed FE method speeds up temperature calculation compared to standard methods. • The proposed FE method helps to choose the wheel that maximizes the operating life. • The experimental-numerical comparison shows a good agreement of the results. Emotions are crucial ingredients of meaningful and memorable tourism experiences. Research methods borrowed from experimental psychology are prime candidates for quantifying emotions while experiences are unfolding. The present article empirically evaluates the methodological feasibility and usefulness of ambulatory recordings of skin conductance responses (SCRs) during a tourism experience. We recorded SCRs in participants while they experienced a roller-coaster ride with or without a virtual reality (VR) headset. Ride elements were identified that related to physical aspects (such as accelerations and braking), to events in the VR environment, and to the physical theming of the roller coaster. VR rides were evaluated more positively than normal rides. SCR time series were meaningfully related to the different ride elements. SCR signals did not significantly predict overall evaluations of the ride. We conclude that psychophysiological measurements are a new avenue for understanding how hospitality, tourism and leisure experiences dynamically develop over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The notion of comfort with respect to rides, such as roller coasters, is typically addressed from the perspective of a physical ride, where the convenience of transportation is redefined to minimize risk and maximize thrill. As a popular form of entertainment, roller coasters sit at the nexus of rides and games, providing a suitable environment to measure both mental and physical experiences of rider comfort. In this paper, the way risk and comfort affect such experiences is investigated, and the connection between play comfort and ride comfort is explored. A roller coaster ride simulation is adopted as the target environment for this research, which combines the feeling of being thrill and comfort simultaneously. At the same time, this paper also expands research on roller coaster rides while bridging the rides and games via the analogy of the law of physics, a concept currently known as motion in mind. This study’s contribution involves a roller coaster ride model, which provides an extended understanding of the relationship between physical performance and the mental experience relative to the concept of motion in mind while establishing critical criteria for a comfortable experience of both the ride and play.

In the overlapping realms of digital design, engineering, tourism/leisure and thrill seeking, roller coasters are sought after attractions capable of drawing millions of visitors to amusement and theme parks located all over the world. More recently (from 2015) however, numerous new and existing roller coasters have been retrofitted to accommodate a Virtual Reality (VR) experience overlay – evidence of the infiltration of the digital disruption in yet another industry. Subsequently, in this paper, we firstly endeavour to examine the global footprint of the European Steel Roller Coaster Industry (ESRCI) as an export of the European economic region, while secondly, determining to what extent Virtual Reality (VR) has already infiltrated the industry. As a result, an exploratory study was conducted to identify the operational roller coasters of 23 European-based steel roller coaster manufacturers, also noting the country in which each roller coaster is operating. The results were used to establish a global footprint of the ESRCI, while an indication is also given to whether any of these manufacturers’ operational roller coasters have already been retrofitted with VR. Initial findings confirm that although the concept of the VR enhanced roller coaster is still fairly new (introduced in 2015), the effects are already wide spread with 8 of the 23 ESRC manufacturers having been affected by VR additions to one or more of their operational roller coasters within the 3 year time frame (2015 – 2017). While VR product development and integration strategies are still in the early stages, as it currently stands, VR is identified as a key role player and complementary technology for further consideration in the roller coaster industry going forward. Moreover, by adopting a manufacturer and industry centric point of view on the subject matter, this paper provides a point of departure for examining the current usage and trends of VR in the ESRCI, which may be transferrable to the roller coaster and amusement industries at large. This, in turn, may advance future discourse in the understanding of whether VR poses a threat to new roller coaster infrastructure development, is a complimentary asset to existing roller coaster infrastructure or is merely a passing fad
