We observe the emission of bunches of $k \geqslant 1$ photons by a circuit made of a microwave resonator in series with a voltage-biased tunable Josephson junction. The bunches are emitted at specific values $V_k$ of the bias voltage, for which each Cooper pair tunneling across the junction creates exactly k photons in the resonator. The latter is a micro-fabricated spiral coil which resonates and leaks photons at 4.4~GHz in a measurement line. Its characteristic impedance of 1.97~k$\Omega$ is high enough to reach a strong junction-resonator coupling and a bright emission of the k-photon bunches. We show that a RWA treatment of the system accounts quantitatively for the observed radiation intensity, from $k=1$ to $6$, and over three orders of magnitude when varying the Josephson energy $E_J$. We also measure the second order correlation function of the radiated microwave to determine its Fano factor $F_k$, which in the low $E_J$ limit, confirms with $F_k=k$ the emission of $k$ photon bunches. At larger $E_J$, a more complex behavior is observed in quantitative agreement with numerical simulations.

Recently Mertens and Moore [arXiv:1909.01484v1] showed that site percolation "is odd." By this they mean that on an $M\times N$ square lattice the number of distinct site configurations that allow for vertical percolation is odd. We show experimentally that a dc biased Josephson junction in series with a high-enough impedance microwave resonator emits antibunched photons. Our resonator is made of a simple micro-fabricated spiral coil that resonates at 4.4 GHz and reaches a 1.97 k$\Omega$ characteristic impedance. The second order correlation function of the power leaking out of the resonator drops down to 0.3 at zero delay, which demonstrates the antibunching of the photons emitted by the circuit at a rate of 6 $10^7$ photons per second. Results are found in quantitative agreement with our theoretical predictions. This simple scheme could offer an efficient and bright single-photon source in the microwave domain.

We consider a game in which each player must find a compromise between more daring strategies that carry a high risk for him to be eliminated, and more cautious ones that, however, reduce his final score. For two symmetric players this game was originally formulated in 1961 by Dresher, who modeled a duel between two opponents. The game has also been of interest in the description of athletic competitions. We extend here the two-player game to an arbitrary number $N$ of symmetric players. We show that there is a mixed-strategy Nash equilibrium and find its exact analytic expression, which we analyze in particular in the limit of large $N$, where mean-field behavior occurs. Domain wall theory (DWT) has proved to be a powerful tool for the analysis of one-dimensional transport processes. A simple version of it was found very accurate for the Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process (TASEP) with random sequential update. However, a general implementation of DWT is still missing in the case of updates with less fluctuations, which are often more relevant for applications. Here we develop an exact DWT for TASEP with parallel update and deterministic (p=1) bulk motion. Remarkably, the dynamics of this system can be described by the motion of a domain wall not only on the coarse-grained level but also exactly on the microscopic scale for arbitrary system size. All properties of this TASEP, time-dependent and stationary, are shown to follow from the solution of a bivariate master equation whose variables are not only the position but also the velocity of the domain wall. In the continuum limit this exactly soluble model then allows us to perform a first principle derivation of a Fokker-Planck equation for the position of the wall. We study two perpendicular intersecting flows of pedestrians. The latter are represented either by moving hard core particles of two types, eastbound ($\symbp$) and northbound ($\symbm$), or by two density fields, $\rhop_t(\brr)$ and $\rhom_t(\brr)$. Each flow takes place on a lattice strip of width $M$ so that the intersection is an $M\times M$ square. We investigate the spontaneous formation, observed experimentally and in simulations, of a diagonal pattern of stripes in which alternatingly one of the two particle types dominates. By a linear stability analysis of the field equations we show how this pattern formation comes about. We focus on the observation, reported recently, that the striped pattern actually consists of chevrons rather than straight lines. We demonstrate that this `chevron effect' occurs both in particle simulations with various different update schemes and in field simulations. We quantify the effect in terms of the chevron angle $\Delta\theta_0$ and determine its dependency on the parameters governing the boundary conditions., Comment: 36 pages, 22 figures

A one-way {\em street} of width M is modeled as a set of M parallel one-dimensional TASEPs. The intersection of two perpendicular streets is a square lattice of size M times M. We consider hard core particles entering each street with an injection probability \alpha. On the intersection square the hard core exclusion creates a many-body problem of strongly interacting TASEPs and we study the collective dynamics that arises. We construct an efficient algorithm that allows for the simulation of streets of infinite length, which have sharply defined critical jamming points. The algorithm employs the `frozen shuffle update', in which the randomly arriving particles have fully deterministic bulk dynamics. High precision simulations for street widths up to M=24 show that when \alpha increases, there occur jamming transitions at a sequence of M critical values \alphaM,M < \alphaM,M-1 < ... < \alphaM,1. As M grows, the principal transition point \alphaM,M decreases roughly as \sim 1/(log M) in the range of M values studied. We show that a suitable order parameter is provided by a reflection coefficient associated with the particle current in each TASEP., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

Motivated by interest in pedestrian traffic we study two lanes (one-dimensional lattices) of length $L$ that intersect at a single site. Each lane is modeled by a TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Exclusion Process). The particles enter and leave lane $\sigma$ (where $\sigma=1,2$) with probabilities $\alpha_\sigma$ and $\beta_\sigma$, respectively. We employ the `frozen shuffle' update introduced in earlier work [C. Appert-Rolland et al, J. Stat. Mech. (2011) P07009], in which the particle positions are updated in a fixed random order. We find analytically that each lane may be in a `free flow' or in a `jammed' state. Hence the phase diagram in the domain $0\leq\alpha_1,\alpha_2\leq 1$ consists of four regions with boundaries depending on $\beta_1$ and $\beta_2$. The regions meet in a single point on the diagonal of the domain. Our analytical predictions for the phase boundaries as well as for the currents and densities in each phase are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations., Comment: 7 figures

We introduce a new update algorithm for exclusion processes, more suitable for the modeling of pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians are modeled as hard-core particles hopping on a discrete lattice, and are updated in a fixed order, determined by a phase attached to each pedestrian. While the case of periodic boundary conditions was studied in a companion paper, we consider here the case of open boundary conditions. The full phase diagram is predicted analytically and exhibits a transition between a free flow phase and a jammed phase. The density profile is predicted in the frame of a domain wall theory, and compared to Monte Carlo simulations, in particular in the vicinity of the transition., Comment: 22 pages, 8 Figures

We introduce a new rule of motion for a totally asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP) representing pedestrian traffic on a lattice. Its characteristic feature is that the positions of the pedestrians, modeled as hard-core particles, are updated in a fixed predefined order, determined by a phase attached to each of them. We investigate this model analytically and by Monte Carlo simulation on a one-dimensional lattice with periodic boundary conditions. At a critical value of the particle density a transition occurs from a phase with `free flow' to one with `jammed flow'. We are able to analytically predict the current-density diagram for the infinite system and to find the scaling function that describes the finite size rounding at the transition point., Comment: 16 pages

Intracellular transport processes driven by molecular motors can be described by stochastic lattice models of self-driven particles. Here we focus on bidirectional transport models excluding the exchange of particles on the same track. We explore the possibility to have efficient transport in these systems. One possibility would be to have appropriate interactions between the various motors' species, so as to form lanes. However, we show that the lane formation mechanism based on modified attachment/detachment rates as it was proposed previously is not necessarily connected to an efficient transport state and is suppressed when the diffusivity of unbound particles is finite. We propose another interaction mechanism based on obstacle avoidance that allows to have lane formation for limited diffusion. Besides, we had shown in a separate paper that the dynamics of the lattice itself could be a key ingredient for the efficiency of bidirectional transport. Here we show that lattice dynamics and interactions can both contribute in a cooperative way to the efficiency of transport. In particular, lattice dynamics can decrease the interaction threshold beyond which lanes form. First we consider a unidirectional flux \omega_bar of vehicles each of which is characterized by its `natural' velocity v drawn from a distribution P(v). The traffic flow is modeled as a collection of straight `world lines' in the time-space plane, with overtaking events represented by a fixed queuing time tau imposed on the overtaking vehicle. This geometrical model exhibits platoon formation and allows, among many other things, for the calculation of the effective average velocity w=\phi(v) of a vehicle of natural velocity v. Secondly, we extend the model to two opposite lanes, A and B. We argue that the queuing time \tau in one lane is determined by the traffic density in the opposite lane. On the basis of reasonable additional assumptions we establish a set of equations that couple the two lanes and can be solved numerically. It appears that above a critical value \omega_bar_c of the control parameter \omega_bar the symmetry between the lanes is spontaneously broken: there is a slow lane where long platoons form behind the slowest vehicles, and a fast lane where overtaking is easy due to the wide spacing between the platoons in the opposite direction. A variant of the model is studied in which the spatial vehicle density \rho_bar rather than the flux \omega_bar is the control parameter. Unequal fluxes \omega_bar_A and \omega_bar_B in the two lanes are also considered. The symmetry breaking phenomenon exhibited by this model, even though no doubt hard to observe in pure form in real-life traffic, nevertheless indicates a tendency of such traffic., Comment: 50 pages, 16 figures; extra references added

Bidirectional variants of stochastic many particle models for transport by molecular motors show a strong tendency to form macroscopic clusters on static lattices. Inspired by the fact that the microscopic tracks for molecular motors are dynamical, we study the influence of different types of lattice dynamics on stochastic bidirectional transport.
