1. 'I'm Sure at Some Point We'll Be Switching': Planning and Enacting an Interview Language Policy with Multilingual Participants

Abstract

When conducting interviews with multilinguals, researchers make (often invisible) decisions about the interview language(s). Whilst the research design may require a particular approach in some cases, linguists generally recommend giving participants a choice or interviewing them in their first language. There are ethical and methodological reasons for considering this, such as the implications for self-expression -- including emotion communication -- and therefore data generation and analysis. This paper offers methodological reflections about planning and conducting a research interview in which the researcher and participant knowingly share two languages, shining a light on the process of building linguistic flexibility into a study. The case study is an interview conducted in French and English, which explored a bilingual client's language use in psychotherapy. The paper gives practical insights into offering a choice of language(s) and planning for the possibility of a multilingual interview (i.e. code-switching). It considers how to mitigate language insecurities before illustrating how the interview language(s) may be negotiated in interaction. I argue for researchers to set clear interview language policies which foreground inclusivity, and show in the process that interviews can become multilingual exchanges, in which both interlocutors experience linguistic freedom.

7. Multilingualism and Psychotherapy: Exploring Multilingual Clients' Experiences of Language Practices in Psychotherapy

Abstract

This study investigates bi- and multilingual clients' self-reported language practices in counselling and psychotherapy. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through an international web survey inviting adults who had experienced one-to-one therapy to describe their experiences. Analysis of responses by 109 multilingual clients revealed that clients did not always have an opportunity to discuss their multilingualism with therapists, and for some this inhibited their language switching. Others were assertive in their language choices, or benefited from working with a therapist who was either bilingual or skilled at creating an inclusive linguistic environment. Very few reported two main therapy languages, while nearly two thirds of participants reported short code-switches. These happened occasionally within sessions and were typically linked to difficulties in translation, expressing emotion, accessing memories or quotation. Over a third of respondents used a second or additional language as their main therapy language, nearly half of whom reported never switching to their first language in sessions, despite some using it daily for inner speech. The implications for therapy and further research are discussed, including the role of the therapist in inviting the client's multiple languages into the therapeutic frame.

Abstract

The 15 January 2022 climactic eruption of Hunga volcano, Tonga, produced an explosion in the atmosphere of a size that has not been documented in the modern geophysical record. The event generated a broad range of atmospheric waves observed globally by various ground-based and spaceborne instrumentation networks. Most prominent is the surface-guided Lamb wave ( ≲ 0.01 Hz), which we observed propagating for four (+three antipodal) passages around the Earth over six days. Based on Lamb wave amplitudes, the climactic Hunga explosion was comparable in size to that of the 1883 Krakatau eruption. The Hunga eruption produced remarkable globally-detected infrasound (0.01–20 Hz), long-range (~10,000 km) audible sound, and ionospheric perturbations. Seismometers worldwide recorded pure seismic and air-to-ground coupled waves. Air-to-sea coupling likely contributed to fast-arriving tsunamis. 27. Differences in emotional reactions of Greek, Hungarian and British users of English when watching English television

Abstract

We investigated differences in self-reported Emotional Reactions (ER) of first (L1) and foreign (LX) language users of English when watching television in English and identified the predictors. Participants were 271 British citizens, 282 Greek and 271 Hungarians living in their home country. English LX users had significantly lower values for ER compared to L1 users. Frequency of watching television in English and Trait Emotional Intelligence were the strongest predictors of ER among LX users. No significant predictors emerged for L1 users. Significant differences emerged between the Greeks and Hungarians despite having similar levels of proficiency. This suggests that the implicit assumption in previous research that any group of LX users with the same L1 and LX represent all LX users in the world is incorrect.

Abstract

In critical sea states, slamming wave loads may cause severe structural damage to marine structures. The slamming loads are associated with fluid-structure impacts with high pressures and short durations. The structural components subjected to the abnormal slamming loads may undergo large plastic deformations. Previous model tests of slamming impacts have focused on the elastic structural response, or the pressure variation on rigid structures. There is a lack of experimental data for elastoplastic response with large deformations. Experimental data is crucial for verification of numerical simulations and theoretical models. In this master thesis, a combination of experimental, numerical and theoretical methods has been applied to investigate abnormal wave slamming events. Drop tests with a panel that falls though air and impacts the water have been used to represent the slamming phenomenon. Drop tests of unstiffened aluminium plates have been performed in the Ocean Basin Laboratory and simulated in the finite element software LS-Dyna. The drop tests were performed at different drop heights with a deadrise angle of 0 or 4 degrees. Drop tests with identical impact conditions had a small scatter in the displacements and the the deformation pattern of the plate. Digital image correlation, henceforth DIC, was used to measure the instantaneous response of the plate field during the impact. Although the DIC technique had previously not been applied to the fluid-structure interaction problem, the DIC measurement was successful. The simulations of the experimental drop tests in LS-Dyna compared well with the DIC measurements. The response coincided well during the first part of the impact, but the numerical simulations did not exhibit the same elastic recovery in the plates as measured by DIC. In conclusion, LS-Dyna has proven to be an useful tool for the simulation of the slamming impact event. Simplified methods were applied to establish the resistance curve and the maximum plate deflection due to slamming loads on a stiffened steel plate. The simplified resistance curves underestimated the deformation capacity of the plate for materials with hardening and large membrane effects. The estimation of the maximum response from established engineering practice agreed well with the numerical estimations from LS-Dyna. In conclusion, the simplified methods were useful for quick assessments of the capacity and response of the stiffened panel, but should be validated with numerical simulations and, if available, experimental data
