- Abstract
Glycemic traits are used to diagnose and monitor type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic health. To date, most genetic studies of glycemic traits have focused on individuals of European ancestry. Here we aggregated genome-wide association studies comprising up to 281,416 individuals without diabetes (30% non-European ancestry) for whom fasting glucose, 2-h glucose after an oral glucose challenge, glycated hemoglobin and fasting insulin data were available. Trans-ancestry and single-ancestry meta-analyses identified 242 loci (99 novel; P < 5 x 10-8), 80% of which had no significant evidence of between-ancestry heterogeneity. Analyses restricted to individuals of European ancestry with equivalent sample size would have led to 24 fewer new loci. Compared with single-ancestry analyses, equivalent-sized trans-ancestry fine-mapping reduced the number of estimated variants in 99% credible sets by a median of 37.5%. Genomic-feature, gene-expression and gene-set analyses revealed distinct biological signatures for each trait, highlighting different underlying biological pathways. Our results increase our understanding of diabetes pathophysiology by using trans-ancestry studies for improved power and resolution.

The magnetic anisotropy and reorientation effects in Gd/(FeCo) and Gd/Fe multilayered films are examined. Both films have a compositional dependence on the anisotropy similar to a phase transition. An in-plane perpendicular spin reorientation near the compensation temperature is determined for rare earth rich films for small periodicities. However, anisotropy changes occur at different temperatures with increasing periodicities.

A study was conducted to analyze the thermal stability of NiMn pinned spin valves for various cobalt and copper thicknesses. The coupling between NiFe and antiferromagnetic NiMn was determined using an annealing process. Moreover, Annealing was carried out under vacuum in a magnetic field. Experimental results indicated the possibility of annealing complete NiMn pinned enhanced spin valves.

One of the most important properties for the magnetically induced super resolution (MSR) with in-plane magneto-optical (MO) media is a magnetisation switching from in-plane to perpendicular direction at an elevated temperature. Experimental studies of this switching in sputtered Gd/Fe multilayered films as a function of the periodicity [Lambda], the Ar gas pressure and the Gd content are presented in this paper. For low Ar gas pressures and with a Gd atomic percentage of 27%[+ or -]2.5% the magnetic anisotropy was found to depend strongly on the periodicity. At room temperature the magnetisation direction is perpendicular to the film plane for small [Lambda] (11[Angstrom]) and becomes in-plane for increasing [Lambda]. Higher gas pressures lead to a stronger in-plane anisotropy. The magnetisation switching from in-plane to perpendicular at elevated temperatures required for MSR has been observed in all films having a periodicity between 13[Angstrom] and 20[Angstrom] for low gas pressures and between 11[Angstrom] and 12[Angstrom] for intermediate gas pressures. This switching could not be observed for high sputtering pressures.

- Abstract
Heavy alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for hypertension; the mechanism by which alcohol consumption impact blood pressure (BP) regulation remains unknown. We hypothesized that a genome-wide association study accounting for gene-alcohol consumption interaction for BP might identify additional BP loci and contribute to the understanding of alcohol-related BP regulation. We conducted a large two-stage investigation incorporating joint testing of main genetic effects and single nucleotide variant (SNV)-alcohol consumption interactions. In Stage 1, genome-wide discovery meta-analyses in ≈131K individuals across several ancestry groups yielded 3, 514 SNVs (245 loci) with suggestive evidence of association (P < 1.0 × 10-5). In Stage 2, these SNVs were tested for independent external replication in ≈440K individuals across multiple ancestries. We identified and replicated (at Bonferroni correction threshold) five novel BP loci (380 SNVs in 21 genes) and 49 previously reported BP loci (2, 159 SNVs in 109 genes) in European ancestry, and in multi-ancestry meta-analyses (P < 5.0 × 10-8). For African ancestry samples, we detected 18 potentially novel BP loci (P < 5.0 × 10-8) in Stage 1 that warrant further replication. Additionally, correlated meta-analysis identified eight novel BP loci (11 genes). Several genes in these loci (e.g., PINX1, GATA4, BLK, FTO and GABBR2) have been previously reported to be associated with alcohol consumption. These findings provide insights into the role of alcohol consumption in the genetic architecture of hypertension.

Conventional post-conflict state-building models approach disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) programmes as a means for state actors to delegitimise non-state sources of power and centralise control over coercive power with the state. The programmes carry the promise of new lives for conflict actors and a new, modern and technocratic approach to the exercise of force; they are thus central to post-conflict transformation. However, this thesis calls into question the naturalisation of 'state' and 'conflict' actors in DDR models. Instead, it finds that DDR programmes create these categories and, in doing so, serve to mask and facilitate continuities in elite power. This thesis examines the case of Timor-Leste. In Timor-Leste, the country's new leaders - resistance actors cum state actors - have centralised legitimate power, while, at the same time, incorporated non-state, resistance-era networks and identities upon which their authority depends. The key technology through which this order has been established is a suite of reintegration programmes. In registering over a quarter of a million people and dispersing significant funds, this programme has emerged as a tool of governance. Again challenging the idea of a 'state' acting upon 'veterans', this thesis finds that these programmes constitute these identities. The act of defining non-state conflict actors who may no longer legitimately wield force also necessarily defines the category of state actors who may wield force. In asking what these programmes 'do,' this thesis rejects conventional readings of reintegration practices as security-driven or processes like registration as purely administrative challenges. As such, this study introduces a critical, new perspective on the political economy of post-conflict reintegration programmes. It supports its findings through a mixed methods approach, combining a robust, representative survey of over 220 former resistance members with ethnographic observation and 90 semi-structured elite interviews. This thesis is thus of relevance to those interested in DDR, conflict networks, and state-building.

A study of dose dependence of the exchange bias field and magnetoresistance by 10 keV-He ion bombardment in an applied magnetic field for Co/Cu/Co/FeMn top spin valves is presented. The magnetoresistence decreases exponentially with increasing ion dose, caused by a higher sheet resistance due to increasing defect density and increasing coupling between the free and the pinned ferromagnetic layer.

- Abstract
This volume is part of a comprehensive review of the thermal radiative properties of air by the Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory for the Defense Atomic Support Agency. The review was published as DASA 1917 (Unclassified) in four parts, April, 1967. Most of this material is now being offered in new editions by Plenum Press. The authors and editors hope that it will be more widely available to scientists and engineers who work in the various fields which require the use of high temperature air properties. F. R. Gilmore and A. Hochstim have revised and increased the material presented in DASA 1917-1 in'Equilibrium Thermodynamic Properties of Air'. The present editors have prepared an introduction for the tables presented in DASA 1917-3 so that'Tables of Radiative Properties of Air'offered herewith is essentially self-contained. A few more figures have been added and a number of errors have been corrected. We have also prepared a slightly revised edition of DASA 1917-4,'Excitation and Non-E'quilibrium Phenomena inAir,'offered by Plenum Press at this time as a companion volume. DASA 1917-2,'The Radiative Properties of Heated Air'by B. H. Armstrong and R. W. Nicholls is not being offered in a new edition at this time.

- Abstract
Comparative studies on the distribution of archaeal versus bacterial communities associatedwith the surface mucus layer of corals have rarely taken place. It has thereforeremained enigmatic whether mucus-associated archaeal and bacterial communities exhibita similar specificity towards coral hosts and whether they vary in the same fashion over spatialgradients and between reef locations. We used microbial community profiling (terminalrestrictionfragment length polymorphism, T-RFLP) and clone library sequencing of the 16SrRNA gene to compare the diversity and community structure of dominant archaeal andbacterial communities associating with the mucus of three common reef-building coral species(Porites astreoides, Siderastrea siderea and Orbicella annularis) over different spatialscales on a Caribbean fringing reef. Sampling locations included three reef sites, three reefpatches within each site and two depths. Reference sediment samples and ambient waterwere also taken for each of the 18 sampling locations resulting in a total of 239 samples. While only 41% of the bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) characterized by TRFLPwere shared between mucus and the ambient water or sediment, for archaeal OTUsthis percentage was 2-fold higher (78%). About half of the mucus-associated OTUs (44%and 58% of bacterial and archaeal OTUs, respectively) were shared between the threecoral species. Our multivariate statistical analysis (ANOSIM, PERMANOVA and CCA)showed that while the bacterial community composition was determined by habitat (mucus, sediment or seawater), host coral species, location and spatial distance, the archaeal communitycomposition was solely determined by the habitat. This study highlights that mucusassociatedarchaeal and bacterial communities differ in their degree of community turnoverover reefs and in their host-specificity.

Aluminium materials together with innovative forming technologies provide great potentials for modern light weight structures due to the material properties. To increase the potentials and to optimize the process parameters of the hydroforming technology with view to the resulting durability of car structures, the engineer needs the fatigue strength data of the aluminium sheets for the different grades of prestraining. Moreover for the transfer of these data to the formed aluminium sheet structures the change of thickness due to the forming process must be considered because of their influence on the stiffness and local strains and stresses for the estimation of strength and life cycle estimation.

For automotive applications, the hot stamping of ultra-high-strength steels such as 22MnB5 is a well-established process providing significant reduction of fuel consumption and improving the component strength and geometrical accuracy due to reduced springback. Tailored tempering is a special type of hot stamping, in which different areas of the component experience different cooling histories leading to different final properties. The potential of manufacturing-optimised components consisting of high-strength and high-ductility regions in harmony with an enhanced crash performance makes tailored tempering very attractive compared with other conventional hot stamping processes. The optimisation of this process, where deformation and cooling take place simultaneously, requires a complete understanding in terms of material behaviour, formability, heat transfer and phase transformation kinetics. To this end, a thermo-mechanical-metallurgical model has been implemented in AutoForm
plus in order to capture the material behaviour during the forming and quenching processes. Both radiation and convection are taken into account to describe heat transfer to ambient. Moreover, latent heat is considered and its effect on simulation is discussed. A guideline for parameter identification strategy has been developed and validated by separate experiments. The simulation results of tailored tempering of a B-pillar are presented together with measured tensile strength and elongation at fracture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

SUBSISTENCE farming ,AGRICULTURAL extension work ,AGRICULTURAL productivity ,AGRICULTURAL administration - Abstract
Purpose:In this article we illustrate the importance of understanding the risk profiles of new technologies, in addition to the changes in productivity, to be able to determine strategies for agricultural development. Design/methodology/approach:The analysis is based on data obtained from a 2002 survey of subsistence farmers in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, and a Just and Pope (1978) framework is used for modeling risk. Findings:We find that even if extension services do not increase the mean production, it may reduce production risk. Practical implication and originality/value:During the past decades, agricultural extension and subsidized conventional inputs such as high-yielding seed varieties, fertilizer and pesticides, have become important components of agricultural aid programs in developing countries. However, outcomes of this type of aid are somewhat ambiguous, and many donor countries have reduced their support in response. For the most part, evaluation of these programs employs total factor productivity analysis to estimate the changes in productivity resulting from investment in aid programs. However, risk-averse, small-scale farmers will consider both the variance in output and the expected mean. They may therefore choose input levels that differ from the optimal input levels of risk-neutral producers, who consider only the expected mean. Programs can therefore have a positive effect because they reduce risk, even if the direct impact on production is limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This investigation determined 1) the effect of urine acidification on renal clearance (Clrenal), total systemic clearance (Cltotal) and nonrenal clearance (Clnonrenal) of pindolol, 2) whether urine acidification affected the stereoselectivity of pindolol excretion and 3) the pharmacodynamic effects that may result from changes in the activity of the organic base transporter. The Clrenal, Cltotal and Clnonrenal values of pindolol isomers were determined during pindolol administration (10 mg twice daily; control phase) and during pindolol administration (10 mg twice daily) with NH4Cl, a systemic and urinary acidifier, (1.5 g every 6 hr). Eight healthy males (22-33 yr) randomly received this therapy for 3 days on two occasions. On day 4, urine and plasma were collected over 24 hr. R-(+) pindolol Clrenal values during control and NH4Cl were 203 +/- 82 and 480 +/- 248 ml/min, respectively (P = .03). S-(-) pindolol Clrenal values during control and NH4Cl were 279 +/- 81 and 593 +/- 294 ml/min, respectively (P = .005). NH4Cl increased R-(+) pindolol Clrenal by 173% +/- 136% (P = .003) and S-(-) pindolol Clrenal by 127% +/- 105% (P = .03). Stereoselective renal excretion of pindolol was unaffected by NH4Cl; the R(+)/S(-) pindolol Clrenal ratio was unchanged from control to NH4Cl (0.74 +/- 0.23 to 0.81 +/- 0.10, P = NS, respectively). NH4Cl, however, affected pindolol Clnonrenal in a stereoselective fashion; R-(+) pindolol Clnonrenal values increased (641 +/- 241 to 851 +/- 251 ml/min; P = .02), whereas S-(-) pindolol Clnonrenal values remained constant (354 +/- 116 vs. 370 +/- 213 ml/min). Changes in pindolol clearance values resulted in a significant reduction in beta-blocking activity assessed by isoproterenol testing. We conclude that increasing the urine proton gradient can increase the Clrenal value of organic bases by 2-fold in a manner that is not stereoselective. NH4Cl, however, did increase the Clnonrenal value of pindolol in a stereoselective manner. These data, therefore, indicate that the administration of a urine-acidifying agent can greatly enhance the elimination of organic bases and ultimately reduce the pharmacologic activity of the organic base.
