Derrière le clinquant des annonces médiatiques, la flotte de satellites Starlink soulève de multiples interrogations. Petit tour d’horizon d’aspects liés à l’astronomie, la navigation dans l’espace, les télécommunications, l’environnement, mais aussi l’économie et les traités internationaux.

Après un rappel historique sur les démonstrations publiques d’expériences scientifiques depuis les cabinets de physique du 18e siècle, cet article présente les leçons expérimentales mises en place à l’ESPCI depuis 2003, qui se sont donné l’objectif de présenter « en direct » la science d’aujourd’hui. Ces conférences, gratuites et ouvertes à tous, qui montrent aussi bien la manipulation d’une chaîne d’ADN que des expériences avec des jeux, sont filmées et mises à disposition sur Canal-U pour les rendre durablement accessibles au public. À titre d’exemple, deux encadrés décrivent des extraits d’une leçon donnée en 2017 par R. Lehoucq, sur l’utilisation de jouets (le yo-yo et le ressort slinky) pour parler de physique.

Cet article montre que l’on peut pratiquer la physique en questionnant certaines images des films de science-fiction. Outre son originalite, qui suscite plus facilement l’interet des collegiens et des lyceens, cette veritable enquete scientifique permet d’attacher les sciences, trop souvent considerees comme hors de la culture generale, a des œuvres populaires, connues de tous ou presque.Ce « vecu commun » permettra ensuite d’elaborer plus facilement un chemin pour eveiller la curiosite, apprendre, appliquer de facon coordonnee des connaissances deja acquises, developper l’esprit critique et la capacite a traiter scientifiquement une question.

International audience; We suggest an unified presentation to teach fundamental constants to graduate students, by introducing four lower limits to observed phenomena. The reduced Planck constant ℏ is the lowest classically definable action. The inverse of invariant speed, s, is the lowest observable slowness. The Planck time, , is the lowest observable time scale. The Boltzmann constant, k, determines the lowest coherent degree of freedom; we recall an Einstein criterion on the fluctuations of small thermal systems and show that it has far-reaching implications, such as demonstrating the relations between critical exponents. Each of these four fundamental limits enters in an inequality, which marks a horizon of the Universe we can perceive. This compact presentation can resolve some difficulties encountered when trying to defining the epistemologic status of these constants, and emphasizes their useful role in shaping our intuitive vision of the Universe.

When the density parameter is close to unity, the universe has a large curvature radius independently of its being hyperbolic, flat, or spherical. Whatever the curvature, the universe may have either a simply connected or a multiply connected topology. In the flat case, the topology scale is arbitrary, and there is no a priori reason for this scale to be of the same order as the size of the observable universe. In the hyperbolic case any nontrivial topology would almost surely be on a length scale too large to detect. In the spherical case, by contrast, the topology could easily occur on a detectable scale. The present paper shows how, in the spherical case, the assumption of a nearly flat universe simplifies the algorithms for detecting a multiply connected topology, but also reduces the amount of topology that can be seen. This is of primary importance for the upcoming cosmic microwave background data analysis. This article shows that for spherical spaces one may restrict the search to diametrically opposite pairs of circles in the circles-in-the-sky method and still detect the cyclic factor in the standard factorization of the holonomy group. This vastly decreases the algorithm's run time. If the search is widened to include pairs of candidate circles whose centers are almost opposite and whose relative twist varies slightly, then the cyclic factor along with a cyclic subgroup of the general factor may also be detected. Unfortunately the full holonomy group is, in general, unobservable in a nearly flat spherical universe, and so a full 6-parameter search is unnecessary. Crystallographic methods could also potentially detect the cyclic factor and a cyclic subgroup of the general factor, but nothing else., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

This article investigates the computation of the eigenmodes of the Laplacian operator in multi-connected three-dimensional spherical spaces. General mathematical results and analytical solutions for lens and prism spaces are presented. Three complementary numerical methods are developed and compared with our analytic results and previous investigations. The cosmological applications of these results are discussed, focusing on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. In particular, whereas in the Euclidean case too small universes are excluded by present CMB data, in the spherical case there will always exist candidate topologies even if the total energy density parameter of the universe is very close to unity.

This article gives the construction and complete classification of all three-dimensional spherical manifolds, and orders them by decreasing volume, in the context of multiconnected universe models with positive spatial curvature. It discusses which spherical topologies are likely to be detectable by crystallographic methods using three-dimensional catalogs of cosmic objects. The expected form of the pair separation histogram is predicted (including the location and height of the spikes) and is compared to computer simulations, showing that this method is stable with respect to observational uncertainties and is well suited for detecting spherical topologies., 32 pages, 26 figures

EnglishIn issue 413 of July-August 2016, Futuribles launched an extended series on the contributions made by science fiction to foresight studies and the relations between the two, in order to discern whether, and to what extent, science-fiction writers have influenced foresight thinking and the collective imagination. After examining these questions from the socio-political and environmental angles, we are resuming this series with a look at science and technology: what have relations been like between science as a discipline and science fiction? For example, Roland Lehoucq shows how science fiction has run alongside science, enabling what are at times pioneering ideas to be presented from an imaginary angle and to be spun out so that their possible impact on human societies can be explored. Science fiction also has the freedom to create technical or scientific innovations to meet the needs of a story line, innovations that may turn out to be totally fanciful or may actually become reality (or may, alternatively, have promise but fail in the end to materialize). Lastly, it plays its part in exploring reality and raising essential questions about technical or scientific developments that are ongoing or in the pipeline. In that sense, it represents a genuine arena of experimentation in — and exploration of — future possibilities and their consequences for humanity. francaisFuturibles a lance, dans son numero de juillet-aout 2016 (n° 413), une “saga” sur les relations et apports de la science-fiction a la prospective, afin de discerner si, et dans quelle mesure, les auteurs de science-fiction ont eu une influence sur les imaginaires collectifs et sur les reflexions prospectives. Apres avoir traite ces questions sous l’angle sociopolitique et environnemental, nous reprenons cette serie en abordant la science et la technologie : quels sont les rapports entre la discipline scientifique et la science-fiction ? Roland Lehoucq montre ainsi comment, au fil du temps, la science-fiction accompagne la science, permettant d’exposer des idees parfois pionnieres sous l’angle de l’imaginaire et d’en tirer le fil pour explorer leurs consequences possibles pour les societes humaines. La science-fiction dispose aussi de la liberte de creer des innovations techniques ou scientifiques pour les besoins du recit, ces innovations pouvant se reveler totalement farfelues, devenir realite ou ne jamais se concretiser. Elle contribue enfin a explorer le reel et a poser des questions essentielles en lien avec les evolutions techniques et scientifiques en cours ou envisagees ; a ce titre, elle constitue un veritable laboratoire d’experimentation et d’exploration du champ des possibles, et de leurs consequences pour l’humanite.

International audience; This article describes the cosmic microwave background anisotropies expected in a closed universe with the topology of a lens space L(p,q) and with a density parameter Ω0 close to 1. It provides the first simulated maps for such spaces along with their corresponding power spectra. In spite of our initial expectations that increasing p (and thus decreasing the size of the fundamental domain) should suppress the quadrupole, we find just the opposite: increasing p elevates the relative power of the low multipoles, for reasons that have since become clear. For Ω0=1.02, an informal “by eye” examination of the simulated power spectra suggests that p must be less than 15 for consistency with WMAP’s data, while geometric considerations imply that matching circles will exist (potentially revealing the multiconnected topology) only if p>7. These bounds become less stringent for values of Ω0 closer to 1.

A widespread myth asserts that all small universe models suppress the CMB quadrupole. In actual fact, some models suppress the quadrupole while others elevate it, according to whether their low-order modes are weak or strong relative to their high-order modes. Elementary geometrical reasoning shows that a model’s largest dimension determines the rough value lmin at which the CMB power spectrum l(l + 1)Cl/2π effectively begins; for cosmologically relevant models, lmin ≤ 3. More surprisingly, elementary geometrical reasoning shows that further reduction of a model’s smaller dimensions – with its largest dimension held fixed – serves to elevate modes in the neighborhood of lmin relative to the high-l portion of the spectrum, rather than suppressing them as one might naively expect. Thus among the models whose largest dimension is comparable to or less than the horizon diameter, the low-order Cl tend to be relatively weak in well-proportioned spaces (spaces whose dimensions are approximately equal in all directions) but relatively strong in oddly-proportioned spaces (spaces that are significantly longer in some directions and shorter in others). We illustrate this principle in detail for the special cases of rectangular 3-tori and spherical spaces. We conclude that well-proportioned spaces make the best candidates for a topological explanation of the low CMB quadrupole observed by COBE and WMAP.

Cosmologists are taking a renewed interest in multiconnected spherical 3-manifolds (spherical spaceforms) as possible models for the physical universe. To understand the formation of large scale structures in such a universe, cosmologists express physical quantities, such as density fluctuations in the primordial plasma, as linear combinations of the eigenmodes of the Laplacian, which can then be integrated forward in time. This need for explicit eigenmodes contrasts sharply with previous mathematical investigations, which have focused on questions of isospectrality rather than eigenmodes. The present article provides explicit orthonormal bases for the eigenmodes of lens and prism spaces. As a corollary it extends known results on spectra from homogeneous lens spaces L(p,1) [Ikeda 1995] to arbitrary lens spaces L(p,q)., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

Cosmology's standard model posits an infinite flat universe forever expanding under the pressure of dark energy. First-year data from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) confirm this model to spectacular precision on all but the largest scales (Bennett {\it et al.}, 2003 ; Spergel {\it et al.}, 2003). Temperature correlations across the microwave sky match expectations on scales narrower than $60^{\circ}$, yet vanish on scales wider than $60^{\circ}$. Researchers are now seeking an explanation of the missing wide-angle correlations (Contaldi {\it et al.}, 2003 ; Cline {\it et al.}, 2003). One natural approach questions the underlying geometry of space, namely its curvature (Efstathiou, 2003) and its topology (Tegmark {\it et al.}, 2003). In an infinite flat space, waves from the big bang would fill the universe on all length scales. The observed lack of temperature correlations on scales beyond $60^{\circ}$ means the broadest waves are missing, perhaps because space itself is not big enough to support them. Here we present a simple geometrical model of a finite, positively curved space -- the Poincar\'e dodecahedral space -- which accounts for WMAP's observations with no fine-tuning required. Circle searching (Cornish, Spergel and Starkman, 1998) may confirm the model's topological predictions, while upcoming Planck Surveyor data may confirm its predicted density of $\Omega_0 \simeq 1.013 > 1$. If confirmed, the model will answer the ancient question of whether space is finite or infinite, while retaining the standard Friedmann-Lema\^\i{}tre foundation for local physics., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. This article is devoted to the description of an outstanding sundial, discovered in Carthage. It is a very well preserved particular type of" scaphea ", today exposed at the Louvre museum. This sundial is a half-sphere made of beige marble. It must be used inclined so that the solar rays passing through its zenithal hole hit the lower edge of the sundial at noon of the winter solstice. The hour is indicated by the solar image projected on the shaded interior surface of the sundial. It includes seven declination curves, with abbreviations in greek of roman calendar months, together with eleven hour curves without figures. We describe completely the use and the way of calculating such a sundial. Moreover, we demonstrate that this scaphea was not designed for Carthage but that its roman style is unquestionable : Julian calendar months translated in greek, external aspect of the sundial, copiously decorated with oak leaves and acorns, are converging clues., Cet article est consacré à la description d'un cadran solaire exceptionnel découvert à Carthage. Particulièrement bien conservé et exposé aujourd'hui au Musée du Louvre, il appartient au type appelé «scaphé». C'est une demi-sphère en marbre clair cristallisé qui doit être placée verticalement afin que les rayons du Soleil passent par un œilleton situé au zénith de la sphère. L'heure est indiquée par une tache de lumière qui se projette dans la concavité. Il comporte sept courbes de déclinaison indiquant la date avec des inscriptions grecques ainsi que les heures solaires temporaires. Nous expliquons la théorie d'un tel cadran et la façon de le calculer. Des récits mythologiques à la science-fiction, en passant par les oeuvres de Darwin, Lévi-Strauss, Faulkner… les sources qui éclairent notre vision des origines de l’humanité sont multiples et ne se limitent pas aux travaux scientifiques. Loin d’être une simple anthologie, cet ouvrage est l’occasion d’un dialogue inédit entre science et littérature, entre textes d’hier et chercheur.ses d’aujourd’hui.

International audience; Le lecteur qui découvre Dune vit une expérience singulière. Les premières pages regorgent de noms propres et de mots nouveaux, parfois sans explication. Dès la première phrase, une note de bas de page renvoie au « Lexique de l’Imperium », un dictionnaire de plus de vingt pages, relégué en annexe, très dense et incluant de multiples renvois : l’entrée « Bene Gesserit » – premier nom propre à apparaître dans le roman – évoque un « Jihad Butlerien », qui mentionne une « Bible C.O. » dont la définition comporte cinq ou six termes supplémentaires. Doit-on explorer ce Lexique en suivant les renvois successifs ? Faut-il lire l’ensemble du dictionnaire avant de lire le roman ? A-t-on intérêt à le consulter à chaque apparition d’un mot nouveau – parfois toutes les trois phrases ! – au détriment de la fluidité de la lecture ? Peut-on au contraire poursuivre sa lecture sans se préoccuper des termes inventés, la narration se suffisant à elle-même ? Ces questions se posent surtout dans les premières pages, lorsqu’il s’agit de s’imprégner des éléments caractérisant l’univers de Dune. Entrer de plain-pied dans un tel roman n’est pas une mince affaire, et certains lecteurs peuvent se décourager. Les autres se laisseront porter par le sense of wonder, ce fameux sens de l’émerveillement qui caractérise les littératures de l’imaginaire, et dont le déclenchement n’est pas sans rapport avec les noms propres et les mots nouveaux. Dune n’a rien d’une linguistique-fiction, mais manie avec habileté de nombreux mots inventés « exotiques » qui participent au décalage spatio-temporel et au sense of wonder. Dans un premier temps, nous verrons donc quels sont ces mots inventés, puis la façon dont ils ont été créés, et quels sont les mécanismes déclenchés par leur apparition au fur et à mesure de la lecture. Au-delà des mots, Dune met-il en scène un fonctionnement particulier du langage ? Oui, effectivement, mais nous ne traiterons pas ici de linguistique proprement dite, car la syntaxe (ordre et fonction des mots dans les phrases) et la sémantique (sens des mots, sens des phrases, ambiguïtés) ne sont pas particulièrement développées par Frank Herbert. En revanche, nous parlerons d’une autre branche des sciences du langage, à savoir la pragmatique. Cette discipline étudie le fonctionnement du langage dans son contexte d’utilisation, et nous nous y intéresserons avec le cas fascinant de la Voix.

Chacun de nos gestes met en jeu des situations, des objets, des activités physiques qui la mobilisent quelque part d'une manière qualitative, quantitative, voire symbolique. Cela tient d'une part à sa présence et de sa disponibilité dans notre environnement, et d'autre part, à ses propriétés physiques primaires, desquelles émergent ses qualités propices à notre existence comme à celle de l'essentiel de la vie sur Terre. De quelles ressources en eau disposons-nous, et quel usages en avons nous ?
