5. Gas Phase TiO2 Photosensitized Mineralization of some VOCs: Mechanistic Suggestions Through a Langmuir-Hinshelwood Kinetic Approach

Abstract

A jointed experimental and theoretical investigation pointing out new insights about the microscopic mechanism of the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) photocatalytic elimination by TiO2 has been done. Methane, hexane, isooctane, acetone and methanol have been photomineralized in a batch reactor. Values of K (adsorption constant on TiO2) and k (mineralization rate constant) of the five VOCs (treating the kinetic data through a Langmuir- Hinshelwood approach) have been determined. Recorded K and k values and performed theoretical calculations allowed us to suggest the involvement of an electron transfer step between the VOC and the hole, TiO2(h+), as the rate determining one.

9. Structural effects in the TiO2-photocatalyzed oxidation of alkylaromatic compounds in acetonitrile in the presence of Ag2SO4

Abstract

Analysis of the TiO2-photocatalyzed oxidation of alkylbenzenes in MeCN with Ag2SO4 as the electron-trapping species reveals that the generated radical cations undergo deprotonation to benzyl radicals. The benzyl radicals undergo a secondary reaction involving a beta-C-H bond cleavage. 1-aryl-2-propanes and corresponding methyl esters undergo beta-C-C bond cleavage. Proper substitution of ester leads to C-4 bond cleavage, suggesting the influence of structure on the photochemical reaction.

Abstract

A novel method for the photooxidation of benzyl phenyl sulfide, 4-methoxy-benzyl phenyl sulfide and phenethyl phenyl sulfide was developed based on the TiO2-catalyzed reactions in the presence of Ag2SO4. The synthetic process was characterized by the formation of sulfoxides from the TiO2-induced photochemical oxidation of sulfides. Furthermore, the oxidation process involved the interaction of the oxygenated centers with the sulfur atom of the adsorbed radical cation.

Abstract

Some TiO2 powders, prepared from titanium(IV)tetraisopropoxide by the sol-gel method and thermally treated between 100 and 1000∘C, have been characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and by nitrogen adsorption and desorption at 77 K to calculate the BET-specific surface area, from which the micropore volume and the external surface area can be derived. The photocatalytic activity (ka) of the above powders has been evaluated considering the TiO2-sensitized photo-oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol in CH3CN as the test reaction. The decrease of ka have been related to the decrease of the BET surface area, the micropore volume, and the external surface area of the TiO2 powders, but a satisfactory linear correlation is observed only for the last superficial parameter.
