- Abstract
Domestication events in livestock can be studied by comparing modern DNA with ancient DNA (aDNA) from archaeological faunal remains. Investigating the phylogeny history of sheep remains from the Neolithic Spanish site of Cova de Els Trocs, provides an opportunity to gain some insights about their origins. In this work, aDNA recovered from 15 ovine specimens dated between 6000 to 4000 years BP were sequenced by whole genome sequencing (WGS), and mapped against the O. aries modern mitogenome. Complete mitogenomes were restored for 12 ancient samples. Bayesian Inference (BI) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees fitting the HKY+G+I model were performed including the mitogenomes of 12 ancient and 74 modern sheep and 4 wild species. All Neolithic samples belong to the mitochondrial haplotype B. Four ancient sheep constituted a clade (89%) with the Viena sheep breed (Karelia), suggesting a complex demographic history of their origins. more...

- Abstract
El Rebolledo is an atypical late Neolithic funerary monument in the context of Las Loras area. It was excavated in 1992 and it was found that, instead of a canonical megalithic grave, this site was a mound of limestone blocks covering an ossuary that was disposed over a previous domestic level. The stratigraphic, anthropologic and archaeometric analysis allows to reconstruct the following chain of events: i) a set of selected human bones (mainly crania and long bones fragments already discarnated) were exposed to a 700 ºC fire in El Rebolledo; ii) some grave goods such as microliths, blades, axeheads and ornaments were added; and iii) all the materials were covered with a tumulus of limestone blocks. Radiocarbon dates of El Rebolledo fits with an early phase of the megalithic phenomenon, contemporary with other monuments from this area.

- Abstract
The burial site of Camino del Molino (Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia) was discovered by chance in 2008. From the beginning, it was of interest to the research community due to its exceptional characteristics, as it was a funerary deposit in continuous use during a large part of the 3rd millennium BC (2923-2712 - 2386-2226 BC) which housed a skeletal collection with an unprecedented volume in European Prehistory. Today we can affirm that Camino del Molino housed the largest ossuary of this chronology, made up of 1348 individuals. The objectives of this PhD thesis can be grouped into two main blocks. On the one hand, the aim has been to offer an approach to the biography of this tomb, based on the analysis of the funerary gesture and post-depositional alterations; to delimit the time of use and assess the existence of different phases; and to characterise the deposited community through the analysis of the population composition in order to identify possible patterns of access to the mortuary space. On the other hand, an exhaustive palaeopathological and morphometric analysis of the sample of articulated individuals has been carried out due to its great informative potential and its representativeness with respect to the total population. The first point has allowed us to reconstruct the ways of life and death and the states of health and disease. The second has revealed important findings that inform on intra-population variability in a sample of unique characteristics in this period. As a result, we can point out that the health of community members was clearly conditioned by their biological sex at birth, the environment in which they moved and intra-population relations. From the earliest years, the population was exposed to 9 a high burden of disease, which particularly affected the non-adults and women of the community. This leads to high infant mortality and women have a generally lower life expectancy than their male counterparts. - Abstract

- Abstract

[EN] The current phylogeographic pattern of European brown bears (Ursus arctos) has commonly been explained by postglacial recolonization out of geographically distinct refugia in southern Europe, a pattern well in accordance with the expansion/contraction model. Studies of ancient DNA from brown bear remains have questioned this pattern, but have failed to explain the glacial distribution of mitochondrial brown bear clades and their subsequent expansion across the European continent. We here present 136 new mitochondrial sequences generated from 346 remains from Europe, ranging in age between the Late Pleistocene and historical times. The genetic data show a high Late Pleistocene diversity across the continent and challenge the strict confinement of bears to traditional southern refugia during the last glacial maximum (LGM). The mitochondrial data further suggest a genetic turnover just before this time, as well as a steep demographic decline starting in the mid‐Holocene. Levels of stable nitrogen isotopes from the remains confirm a previously proposed shift toward increasing herbivory around the LGM in Europe. Overall, these results suggest that in addition to climate, anthropogenic impact and inter‐specific competition may have had more important effects on the brown bear's ecology, demography, and genetic structure than previously thought more...

From around 2750 to 2500 bc, Bell Beaker pottery became widespread across western and central Europe, before it disappeared between 2200 and 1800 bc. The forces that propelled its expansion are a matter of long-standing debate, and there is support for both cultural diffusion and migration having a role in this process. Here we present genome-wide data from 400 Neolithic, Copper Age and Bronze Age Europeans, including 226 individuals associated with Beaker-complex artefacts. We detected limited genetic affinity between Beaker-complex-associated individuals from Iberia and central Europe, and thus exclude migration as an important mechanism of spread between these two regions. However, migration had a key role in the further dissemination of the Beaker complex. We document this phenomenon most clearly in Britain, where the spread of the Beaker complex introduced high levels of steppe-related ancestry and was associated with the replacement of approximately 90% of Britains gene pool within a few hundred years, continuing the east-to-west expansion that had brought steppe-related ancestry into central and northern Europe over the previous centuries., Author(s): Iigo Olalde (corresponding author) [1]; Selina Brace [2]; Morten E. Multidisciplinary - Abstract
Archaeological research in the Dolmen of El Pendón (Reinoso, Burgos, Spain) has brought to light the complex biography of a megalithic monument used throughout the 4th millennium cal. BC. The ossuary of this burial holds the bones of nearly a hundred individuals who suffered from diverse pathologies and injuries. This study presents the discovery of a skull with two bilateral perforations on both mastoid bones. These evidences point to a mastoidectomy, a surgical procedure possibly performed to relieve the pain this prehistoric individual may have suffered as a result of otitis media and mastoiditis. The hypothesis of surgical intervention is also supported by the presence of cut marks at the anterior edge of the trepanation made in the left ear. Furthermore, the results of this paper demonstrate the survival of the individual to both interventions. Given the chronology of this dolmen, this find would be the earliest surgical ear intervention in the history of mankind. more...

- Abstract
También el mito numantino ha sido utilizado por los ejércitos a lo largo de la historia y por las actuales Fuerzas Armadas españolas para la creación de un férreo espíritu militar de no retroceso frente al enemigo y poder así sobrellevar mejor las penurias del soldado en la guerra., Numancia is a well-known historical fact, currently used as a cultural tourist attraction in the province of Soria (Spain), but its use as a basis for the creation of the national spirit is less recognized since the origin of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula, passing through High Middle Ages, through the Renaissance and through all the historical stages of Spain, except in the last two decades of the 20th century, when an attempt was made to detach from the patriotic spirit as this was one of the fundamental pillars of national Catholicism during the regime of General Franco. . The numantine myth has also been used by the armies throughout history and by the current Spanish Armed Forces to create a strong military spirit of non-retreat against the enemy and thus be able to better cope with the hardships of the soldier in war., Departamento de Prehistoria, Arqueología, Antropología Social y Ciencias y Técnicas Historiográficas, Grado en Historia more...

- Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been infecting humans for millennia and remains a global health problem, but its past diversity and dispersal routes are largely unknown. We generated HBV genomic data from 137 Eurasians and Native Americans dated between ~10,500 and ~400 years ago. We date the most recent common ancestor of all HBV lineages to between ~20,000 and 12,000 years ago, with the virus present in European and South American hunter-gatherers during the early Holocene. After the European Neolithic transition, Mesolithic HBV strains were replaced by a lineage likely disseminated by early farmers that prevailed throughout western Eurasia for ~4000 years, declining around the end of the 2nd millennium BCE. The only remnant of this prehistoric HBV diversity is the rare genotype G, which appears to have reemerged during the HIV pandemic. more...

The only remnant of this prehistoric HBV diversity is the rare genotype G, which appears to have reemerged during the HIV pandemic. more...

[EN] The archaeological research at Els Trocs cave is a good example of a successful transdisciplinary project. Together with a great team of specialists in different areas of knowledge, we present an update of our research process. The site is a cave that was occupied for more than two millennia, from the Early Neolithic (the end of the 6th millennium cal. BC) to the Late Neolithic (the end of the 4th millennium cal. BC). The groups who currently and seasonally visited the cave focussed their main economic activity in sheep herding. For that chronology, they practised a very specialised management system comprising the vertical movement of livestock (an incipient transhumance) from the river Ebro Basin to the mountains. The combination of analytical research, including micromorphology, zooarchaeology, carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses, archaeobotany, palaeoparasitology, traceology, or the study of the raw material provenance and the similarities of tipology, technology and decoration in pottery compositions provide a comprehensive overview of the subsistence universe of these human groups. Finally, the anthropological and genetic studies help to gain insights into the life experiences of some of individuals who occupied the cave throughout two long cycles of use., [ES] El proyecto de investigación desarrollado en la cueva de Els Trocs se ha convertido en un ejemplo de transdisciplinariedad. - Abstract
The Neolithic being one of the fundamental periods in the development of human societies, we aim to provide a vision of how the diffusion took place – if indeed it did – and the developments that this new relationship between man and nature brought with it. Within a general contextualization of the phenomenon, we have focused on an area that has played a fundamental role in the Neolithization of the Iberian Peninsula, which is the Ebro Valley. Based on deposits recovered from the site and the exact dates obtained from short-lived elements, we seek to provide a picture, as true as possible, of how the new way of life based on agriculture and livestock was established in this peninsular territory that has the Ebro River as its cradle., Grado en Historia more...

- Abstract
Violence seems deeply rooted in human nature and an endemic potential for such is today frequently associated with differing ethnic, religious or socio-economic backgrounds. Ethnic nepotism is believed to be one of the main causes of inter-group violence in multi-ethnic societies. At the site of Els Trocs in the Spanish Pyrenees, rivalling groups of either migrating early farmers or farmers and indigenous hunter-gatherers collided violently around 5300 BCE. This clash apparently resulted in a massacre of the Els Trocs farmers. The overkill reaction was possibly triggered by xenophobia or massive disputes over resources or privileges. In the present, violence and xenophobia are controlled and sanctioned through social codes of conduct and institutions. So that, rather than representing an insurmountable evolutionary inheritance, violence and ethnic nepotism can be overcome and a sustainable future achieved through mutual respect, tolerance and openness to multi-ethnic societies. more...

Archaeological sites ,Tormo II sites (Ambrona Valley, Soria) ,Abrigo de la Dehesa ,Settlement patterns - Abstract
In this work, the results of the excavation of two archaeological sites, the Abrigo de la Dehesa/Carlos Álvarez (Miño de Medinaceli) and the openair settlement of El Tormo II (Fuencaliente de Medinaceli), located at the Ambrona Valley in the province of Soria, are presented. In both cases, the study of the documented contexts and remains leaves no doubt of its correspondence to the first productive groups of the Iberian Plateau. The Abrigo de la Dehesa has a wide stratigraphic sequence from the beginning of Late Prehistory to modern times, when this place was used recurrently as a shepherd shelter. Some papers about the singular rock painting evidences found in this site have already been published. However, this work focuses on the analysis of the archaeological evidences of its oldest level. On the other hand, El Tormo II is an open-air settlement composed by several negative structures that, mostly, were excavated and used throughout the 2nd millennium cal. BC (during the the chrono-cultural period known as “Middle-Late Bronze Age”). However, the excavation of some of these structures has provided archaeological remains related to the Early Neolithic. In addition, this site has similar spatial distribution and morphological features to those documented in other nearby settlements of this chronology, such us La Lámapara or La Revilla. The aim of this work is to compare the settlement patterns, both open-air and in rock-shelter, through, fundamentally, the technological and stylistic analysis of pottery collections and the traceological study of lithic industry, in order to assess the socioeconomic significance that this variability could have. more...

- Abstract
- Abstract
The Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe represents an important test case for the study of human population movements during prehistoric periods. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the peninsula formed a periglacial refugium [1] for hunter-gatherers (HGs) and thus served as a potential source for the re-peopling of northern latitudes [2]. The post-LGM genetic signature was previously described as a cline from Western HG (WHG) to Eastern HG (EHG), further shaped by later Holocene expansions from the Near East and the North Pontic steppes [3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. Western and central Europe were dominated by ancestry associated with the ∼14,000-year-old individual from Villabruna, Italy, which had largely replaced earlier genetic ancestry, represented by 19,000–15,000-year-old individuals associated with the Magdalenian culture [2]. However, little is known about the genetic diversity in southern European refugia, the presence of distinct genetic clusters, and correspondence with geography. Here, we report new genome-wide data from 11 HGs and Neolithic individuals that highlight the late survival of Paleolithic ancestry in Iberia, reported previously in Magdalenian-associated individuals. We show that all Iberian HGs, including the oldest, a ∼19,000-year-old individual from El Mirón in Spain, carry dual ancestry from both Villabruna and the Magdalenian-related individuals. Thus, our results suggest an early connection between two potential refugia, resulting in a genetic ancestry that survived in later Iberian HGs. Our new genomic data from Iberian Early and Middle Neolithic individuals show that the dual Iberian HG genomic legacy pertains in the peninsula, suggesting that expanding farmers mixed with local HGs. more...

- Abstract
[EN] The knowledge of climatic and environmental changes at the onset of the Holocene and its impact on human populations and cultures is key for the understanding of their both past and future evolution. In this sense, the study through trenching and cores of the Holocene archaeosedimentary record in the surroundings of the Los Cascajos Neolithic archaeological site (Los Arcos, Navarra), provides valuable information not only for the establishment of the environmental evolution of this area, but also for the knowledge of the activities that the inhabitants of the settlement developed in the Odrón riverbanks. In this work the results of the stratigraphic, sedimentological and geochemical study (XRFCS) of the LAC1 core are presented. The obtained data denote a trend towards longterm aridification throughout the Holocene, recorded by an aggradation-incision cycle in the fluvial evolution of the Odrón River. In the fluvial sedimentary record, anthropic activity proxies coetaneous to Los Cascajos settlement are also detected during a relatively more humid period than nowadays, this fact evidences the subsequent aridification of this area of the Ebro valley along the late Holocene (Meghalayan). more...

Publié aux Actes de la séance de la Société préhistorique française de Paris, Proceedings of the session n° XXXIV-2 of the XVIII° UISPP World Congress; International audience; After a first phase restricted to coastal areas, the neolithisation of the North-Western Mediterranean basin expanded towardsthe hinterlands, before reaching its full agricultural potential characterized by the Middle Neolithic. However, the transition period ofthe mid Vth millennium BC remains poorly documented. Even so, many transformations are interpreted as the genesis of a socio-economicalremodelling, the real impulse of which dates to around 4200 BC. Generally, so-called transitional horizons underline a consolidatedproduction economy, based on more and more diversified environments. Settlements become more deeply rooted in their respectiveterritories. Simultaneously, interregional diffusion and interactions accentuate in various areas such as lithic raw materials andstandardised pottery décor. These changes highlight the establishment of vast exchange networks, paving the way for the development régioofmetalworking. All these characteristics evoke a structural mutation in Vth millennium BC societies, which is sometimes interpretedas the result of a growing demography. The site of Los Cascajos is a Neolithic settlement located in Los Arcos in Navarra (Spain). The settlement has two main occupationphases from the end of the sixth millennium to the second half of the fifth millennium BC. The abundant pottery assemblages providean ideal framework for observing the evolution of its production. Its study highlights the existence of a common base for both occupationphases, but also a normalisation of practice that leads to a standardisation of production. On the one hand, there are features that arestable and indicate that the manières de faire were transmitted. On the other, some features are new and they correspond to the mainmarkers of the Middle Neolithic, which supposes a diffusion process. The decline in the variability of pottery production highlights astandardisation mechanism, observed in the technicity and the décor, the size and form of the pottery as well as the regularity of itsshaping. This criterion is considered as an important marker of the specialisation phenomenon.; Après une première phase restreinte au littoral, de 5 700 à 5 200 cal.
