1. A closer look at LTT 9779b: The ESPRESSO endeavour to pierce the atmospheric veil

Abstract

The proliferation of exoplanet discoveries in exotic environments like the Neptune desert challenges our understanding of planetary atmospheres under intense irradiation. The unexpected discovery of LTT9779 b, an ultra-hot Neptune within this desert, offers a prime opportunity for atmospheric studies. We build on prior observations of LTT9779 b from TESS, Spitzer, and CHEOPS, incorporating new VLT/ESPRESSO data to probe its atmospheric dynamics. Preliminary analyses suggest a metal-rich atmosphere and a high day-side geometric albedo, possibly indicating silicate clouds. Minimal atmospheric escape is observed, contrasting existing models of planetary evolution under extreme irradiation. We obtained the transmission spectrum of LTT9779 b between 0.4 and 0.78 microns with ESPRESSO, addressing systematics across three transits. Our analysis focused on the sodium doublet and H-alpha, using cross-correlation with models containing Na, K, FeH, TiO, and VO. No significant atmospheric signal was detected, with metallicity limits set at [Fe/H] $\geq$ 2.25 ($\geq$ 180 times solar). The non-detection aligns with a high-metallicity, cloud-free model, implying a high mean molecular weight and reduced atmospheric scale height. We interpret this as evidence for a metal-rich atmosphere with suppressed spectral features, possibly due to high-altitude clouds or hazes. Abstract

This study explores a data-driven approach to discovering novel clinical and genetic markers in ovarian cancer (OC). Two main analyses were performed: (1) a nonlinear examination of an OC dataset using autoencoders, which compress data into a 3-dimensional latent space to detect potential intrinsic separability between platinum-sensitive and platinum-resistant groups; and (2) an adaptation of the informative variable identifier (IVI) to determine which features (clinical or genetic) are most relevant to disease progression. In the autoencoder analysis, a clearer pattern emerged when using clinical features and the combination of clinical and genetic data, indicating that disease progression groups can be distinguished more effectively after supervised fine tuning. For genetic data alone, this separability was less apparent but became more pronounced with a supervised approach. Using the IVI-based feature selection, key clinical variables (such as type of surgery and neoadjuvant chemotherapy) and certain gene mutations showed strong relevance, along with low-risk genetic factors. These findings highlight the strength of combining machine learning tools (autoencoders) with feature selection methods (IVI) to gain insights into ovarian cancer progression. They also underscore the potential for identifying new biomarkers that integrate clinical and genomic indicators, ultimately contributing to improved patient stratification and personalized treatment strategies.

Abstract

We present a systematic comparison of theoretical predictions and various high-precision experimental measurements, specifically of differential cross sections performed by the LHC run II for Drell-Yan gauge boson, top-quark pair, single-inclusive jet and di-jet production, and by HERA for single-inclusive jet and di-jet production. Theoretical predictions are computed at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The most widely employed sets of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) are used, and PDF, strong coupling, and missing higher order uncertainties are taken into account. We quantitatively assess the predictive power of each PDF set and the contribution of the different sources of experimental and theoretical uncertainty to the agreement between data and predictions. Abstract

Atmospheric studies are essential for elucidating the formation history, evolutionary processes, and atmospheric dynamics of exoplanets. High-resolution transmission spectroscopy offers the advantage of detecting subtle variations in stellar spectral profiles, thereby enabling the identification of the sources of observed signals. In this study, we present the transmission spectra of the exoplanet WASP-77Ab, a hot Jupiter with a 1.36-day orbital period around a G8 host star with $V=11.29$ mag. These observations were conducted using the high-resolution spectrograph ESPRESSO at the Very Large Telescope over three transit events. We analyze the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for WASP-77A and determine a projected spin-orbit angle of ${\lambda = 16.131^{\circ}}^{+2.106}_{-2.324}$, indicating that the planet's orbit is nearly aligned. Following the generation of transmission spectra for the three nights, we model and correct for center-to-limb variation and the Rossiter-McLaughlin effects. In the residual transmission spectra, we detect H$\alpha$, H$\beta$ and CaII H with a significance exceeding 3.5$\sigma$. After applying 0.1-0.5 \r{A} masks to the cores of these lines to mitigate stellar contamination, all them still shows visible absorptions although not significant, suggesting at least partial planet contribution to them. Therefore, we are yet unable to confirm or reject the planetary origin of these spectral signals based on the current data set. Further investigation of WASP-77Ab's atmosphere, particularly in areas beyond the terminator region, is essential to illuminate the planet's two-dimensional atmospheric structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13 pages, 10 figures

Patients were diagnosed as mild AD based on altered levels of total TAU, phospho-TAU and Abeta(1– 42) in cerebrospinal fluid, and Abeta(1– 40), Abeta(1– 42) and total TAU levels in plasma. Whenever possible, blood and brain comparisons were made using public datasets.Results: We found 48 inflammation and 34 redox genes differentially expressed in the blood of AD patients vs controls (FC > 1.5, p < 0.01), out of which 22 pro-inflammatory and 12 redox genes exhibited FC > 2 and p < 0.001. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis identified nine inflammation and seven redox genes that discriminated between AD patients and controls (area under the curve > 0.9). Correlations of the dysregulated inflammation and redox transcripts indicated that RELA may regulate several redox genes including DUOX1 and GSR. Based on the gene expression profile, we have found that the master regulators of inflammation and redox homeostasis, NFκB and NRF2, were significantly disturbed in the blood of AD patients, as well as several zinc finger and helix-loop-helix transcription factors.Conclusion: The selected inflammation and redox genes might be useful biomarkers for monitoring anti-inflammatory therapy in mild AD.Keywords: oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, gene expression, dementia, NRF2, NFkappaB

6. Research on Cyberbullying and Suicide: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

Suicide is a global mental health problem. In recent years, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicides have increased in children and adolescents. In this population, cyberbullying is a public health problem that has grown along the increase in use of devices with internet access. Cybervictimization is related to negative health effects, even including suicidal ideation or suicide in cyberbullied individuals. This study is the first bibliometric analysis on scientific literature related to cyberbullying and suicide based on the traditional laws of bibliometrics. The aim was to generate a global overview of the research related to this object of study. We analysed 242 documents published in journals indexed in the Web of Science, examining the trend followed by annual publications, identifying the prolific (most productive) and prominent (prolific co-authors with one or more papers between most cited papers) co-authors, leading countries and journals, the most cited documents and the most used author keywords. Annual publications followed an exponential growth trend (R[superscript 2] = 89.2%), meaning that there is a great interest in the scientific community for this study object. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and Psychiatry Research were the journals with most document published. Baiden, P. (prolific), Kowalski, R. (most cited), Hinjuja, S. and Patchin, J. (prominents) were the most highlighted co-authors, reference authors on the subject. Most scientific output originated in the USA. Five thematic lines were identified among the author keywords. The results of this research show the growing interest of the scientific community in this topic, along with useful information for researchers and publishers, identifying relevant co-authors, journals interested in the topic and emerging lines of research, highlighting self-harm, cyber-victimisation, suicide risks and suicidal behaviours as the most recent thematic lines.

7. Gamification and Player Type: Relationships of the HEXAD Model with the Learning Experience

Abstract

Gamification is a widely utilised educational tool designed to promote specific behaviours. An effective gamification design must consider users' experiences and perceptions to enhance engagement and participation. This research is part of a broader study that develops gamified activities to teach primary school pupils about sustainable mobility. The study investigates the relationship between player profiles, as defined by the Hexad scale, and the use of the ClassCraft platform for learning sustainable mobility concepts. The Hexad scale serves as an instrument to analyse the various motivations exhibited by each student when interacting with the gamified application. Specifically, we examine the connection between player profiles, learning levels, the components of the ClassCraft platform, and the impact of gender on this relationship. An experiment was conducted with 75 fifth-grade primary school students (aged 10-12) who used the ClassCraft platform. Several linear regression models correlated various variables with the player profiles included in the Hexad scale. The results indicate a relationship between player profiles and the variables considered: final score on the platform, number of activities completed, number of connections made, player level achieved, student satisfaction level, and learning levels. Additionally, the high percentage of socialiser profiles found among the students is perfectly in line with some of the intrinsic characteristics of the ClassCraft platform. Furthermore, the analysis revealed minimal differences between male and female players across most profiles.

8. Where the Rubber Meets the Road: Balancing Pedagogy and Partnerships in an Undergraduate Community-Based Research Class

Abstract

Community-based research (CBR) as a form of community-engaged learning (CEL) offers students valuable sociological practice and learning experiences. Although CEL strategies are well documented for enhancing students' sociological imagination, gaps persist in the literature regarding the impact on community partners. This article addresses the challenges and opportunities inherent in CEL, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach that enhances student learning while maintaining meaningful community partnerships. Through a case study of an undergraduate CBR class, this article highlights the instructor's role in building authentic community-academic relationships, providing a blueprint for designing high-impact pedagogical practices with real-world applications. Employing qualitative interviews focused on students' and community partners' experiences, the study probes power dynamics, potential inequalities, and time-intensive aspects. It introduces an instructor-anchored partnership model incorporating team-based learning, addressing these complexities and presenting a framework for effective community-based learning in sociological education.

9. POP1 inhibits MSU-induced inflammasome activation and ameliorates gout

Abstract

Canonical inflammasomes are innate immune protein scaffolds that enable the activation of inflammatory caspase-1, and subsequently the processing and release of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-18, and danger signals, as well as the induction of pyroptotic cell death. Inflammasome assembly and activation occurs in response to sensing of infectious, sterile and self-derived molecular patterns by cytosolic pattern recognition receptors, including the Nod-like receptor NLRP3. While these responses are essential for host defense, excessive and uncontrolled NLRP3 inflammasome responses cause and contribute to a wide spectrum of inflammatory diseases, including gout. A key step in NLRP3 inflammasome assembly is the sequentially nucleated polymerization of Pyrin domain (PYD)- and caspase recruitment domain (CARD)-containing inflammasome components. NLRP3 triggers polymerization of the adaptor protein ASC through PYD-PYD interactions, but ASC polymerization then proceeds in a self-perpetuating manner and represents a point of no return, which culminates in the activation of caspase-1 by induced proximity. In humans, small PYD-only proteins (POPs) lacking an effector domain regulate this key process through competitive binding, but limited information exists on their physiological role during health and disease. Here we demonstrate that POP1 expression in macrophages is sufficient to dampen MSU crystal-mediated inflammatory responses in animal models of gout. Whether MSU crystals are administered into a subcutaneous airpouch or into the ankle joint, the presence of POP1 significantly reduces neutrophil infiltration. Also, airpouch exudates have much reduced IL-1β and ASC, which are typical pro-inflammatory indicators that can also be detected in synovial fluids of gout patients. Exogenous expression of POP1 in mouse and human macrophages also blocks MSU crystal-induced NLRP3 inflammasome assembly, resulting in reduced IL-1β and IL-18 secretion. Conversely, reduced POP1 expression in human macrophages enhances IL-1β secretion. We further determined that the mechanism for the POP1-mediated inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome activation is through its interference with the crucial NLRP3 and ASC interaction within the inflammasome complex. Strikingly, administration of an engineered cell permeable version of POP1 was able to ameliorate MSU crystal-mediated inflammation in vivo, as measured by neutrophil infiltration. Overall, we demonstrate that POP1 may play a crucial role in regulating inflammatory responses in gout.

Abstract

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015. Since its conception, MIBiG has been regularly updated to expand data coverage and remain up to date with innovations in natural product research. Here, we describe MIBiG version 4.0, an extensive update to the data repository and the underlying data standard. In a massive community annotation effort, 267 contributors performed 8304 edits, creating 557 new entries and modifying 590 existing entries, resulting in a new total of 3059 curated entries in MIBiG. Particular attention was paid to ensuring high data quality, with automated data validation using a newly developed custom submission portal prototype, paired with a novel peer-reviewing model. MIBiG 4.0 also takes steps towards a rolling release model and a broader involvement of the scientific community. MIBiG 4.0 is accessible online at https://mibig.secondarymetabolites.org/.

11. Combination of aN$^3$LO PDFs and implications for Higgs production cross-sections at the LHC

Abstract

We discuss how the two existing approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) sets of parton distributions (PDFs) from the MSHT20 and NNPDF4.0 series can be combined for LHC phenomenology, both in the pure QCD case and for the QCD$\otimes$QED sets that include the photon PDF. Using the resulting combinations, we present predictions for the total inclusive cross-section for Higgs production in gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production at the LHC Run-3. For the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion channels, the corrections that arise when using correctly matched aN$^3$LO PDFs with N$^3$LO cross section calculations, compared to using NNLO PDFs, are significant, in many cases larger than the PDF uncertainty, and generally larger than the differences between the two aN$^3$LO PDF sets entering the combination. Abstract

The recent direct detection of neutrinos at the LHC has opened a new window on high-energy particle physics and highlighted the potential of forward physics for groundbreaking discoveries. In the last year, the physics case for forward physics has continued to grow, and there has been extensive work on defining the Forward Physics Facility and its experiments to realize this physics potential in a timely and cost-effective manner. Following a 2-page Executive Summary, we present the status of the FPF, beginning with the FPF's unique potential to shed light on dark matter, new particles, neutrino physics, QCD, and astroparticle physics. Abstract

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

Abstract

Deep learning models are defined in terms of a large number of hyperparameters, such as network architectures and optimiser settings. These hyperparameters must be determined separately from the model parameters such as network weights, and are often fixed by ad-hoc methods or by manual inspection of the results. An algorithmic, objective determination of hyperparameters demands the introduction of dedicated target metrics, different from those adopted for the model training. Here we present a new approach to the automated determination of hyperparameters in deep learning models based on statistical estimators constructed from an ensemble of models sampling the underlying probability distribution in model space. This strategy requires the simultaneous parallel training of up to several hundreds of models and can be effectively implemented by deploying hardware accelerators such as GPUs. As a proof-of-concept, we apply this method to the determination of the partonic substructure of the proton within the NNPDF framework and demonstrate the robustness of the resultant model uncertainty estimates. The new GPU-optimised NNPDF code results in a speed-up of up to two orders of magnitude, a stabilisation of the memory requirements, and a reduction in energy consumption of up to 90% as compared to sequential CPU-based model training. 15. Speeds of sound for ($CH_{4}$ + $He$) mixtures from $p$ = (0.5 to 20) MPa at $T$ = (273.16 to 375) K

Abstract

This work aims to provide accurate and wide-ranging experimental new speed of sound data $w$($p$,$T$) of two binary ($CH_{4}$ + $He$) mixtures at a nominal helium content of 5% and 10% at pressures $p$ = (0.5 up to 20) MPa and temperatures $T$ = (273.16, 300, 325, 350 and 375) K. For this purpose, the most accurate technique for determining speed of sound in gas phase has been used: the spherical acoustic resonator. Speed of sound is determined with an overall relative expanded ($k$ = 2) uncertainty of 230 parts in $10^{6}$ and compared to reference models for multicomponent natural gas-like mixtures: AGA8-DC92 and GERG-2008 equations of state. Relative deviations of experimental data from model estimations are outside the experimental uncertainty limit, although all points are mostly within the AGA uncertainty of 0.2% and GERG uncertainty of 0.5% and worsen as the helium content increases. Absolute average deviations are better than 0.45% for GERG and below 0.14% for AGA models in (0.95 $CH_{4}$ + 0.05 $He$) mixture and below 0.83% for GERG and within 0.22% for AGA equations in (0.90 $CH_{4}$ + 0.10 $He$) mixture.

Abstract

Wave-optics phenomena in gravitational lensing occur when the signal's wavelength is commensurate to the gravitational radius of the lens. Although potentially detectable in lensed gravitational waves, fast radio bursts and pulsars, accurate numerical predictions are challenging to compute. Here we present novel methods for wave-optics lensing that allow the treatment of general lenses. In addition to a general algorithm, specialized methods optimize symmetric lenses (arbitrary number of images) and generic lenses in the single-image regime. We also develop approximations for simple lenses (point-like and singular isothermal sphere) that drastically outperform known solutions without compromising accuracy. These algorithms are implemented in Gravitational Lensing of Waves (GLoW): an accurate, flexible, and fast code. GLoW efficiently computes the frequency-dependent amplification factor for generic lens models and arbitrary impact parameters in O(1 ms) to O(10 ms) depending on the lens configuration and complexity. GLoW is readily applicable to model lensing diffraction on gravitational-wave signals, offering new means to investigate the distribution of dark-matter and large-scale structure with signals from ground and space detectors., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. Abstract

Proton-proton collisions at energy-frontier facilities produce an intense flux of high-energy light particles, including neutrinos, in the forward direction. At the LHC, these particles are currently being studied with the far-forward experiments FASER/FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC, while new dedicated experiments have been proposed in the context of a Forward Physics Facility (FPF) operating at the HL-LHC. Here we present a first quantitative exploration of the reach for neutrino, QCD, and BSM physics of far-forward experiments integrated within the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project as part of its proton-proton collision program (FCC-hh) at $\sqrt{s} \simeq 100$ TeV. We find that $10^9$ electron/muon neutrinos and $10^7$ tau neutrinos could be detected, an increase of several orders of magnitude compared to (HL-)LHC yields. We study the impact of neutrino DIS measurements at the FPF@FCC to constrain the unpolarised and spin partonic structure of the nucleon and assess their sensitivity to nuclear dynamics down to $x \sim 10^{-9}$ with neutrinos produced in proton-lead collisions. We demonstrate that the FPF@FCC could measure the neutrino charge radius for $\nu_{e}$ and $\nu_\mu$ and reach down to five times the SM value for $\nu_\tau$. We fingerprint the BSM sensitivity of the FPF@FCC for a variety of models, including dark Higgs bosons, relaxion-type scenarios, quirks, and millicharged particles, finding that these experiments would be able to discover LLPs with masses as large as 50 GeV and couplings as small as $10^{-8}$, and quirks with masses up to 10 TeV. Our study highlights the remarkable opportunities made possible by integrating far-forward experiments into the FCC project, and it provides new motivation for the FPF at the HL-LHC as an essential precedent to optimize the forward physics experiments that will enable the FCC to achieve its full physics potential.

Abstract

Essential hypertension (HT) is a highly prevalent cardiovascular disease of unclear physiopathology. Pharmacological studies suggest that purinergic P2Y6 receptors (P2ry6) play important roles in cardiovascular function and may contribute to angiotensin II (AgtII) pathophysiological effects. Here, we tested the hypothesis that functional coupling between P2ry6 and AgtII receptors mediates altered vascular reactivity in HT. For this, a multipronged approach was implemented using mesenteric vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and arteries from Blood Pressure Normal (BPN) and Blood Pressure High (BPH) mice. Differential transcriptome profiling of mesenteric artery VSMCs identified P2ry6 purinergic receptor mRNA as one of the top upregulated transcripts in BPH. P2Y receptor activation elicited distinct vascular responses in mesenteric arteries from BPN and BPH mice. Accordingly, 10 µm UTP produced a contraction close to half-maximal activation in BPH arteries but no response in BPN vessels. AgtII-induced contraction was also higher in BPH mice despite having lower AgtII receptor type-1 (Agtr1) expression and was sensitive to P2ry6 modulators. Proximity ligation assay and super-resolution microscopy showed closer localization of Agtr1 and P2ry6 at/near the membrane of BPH mice. This proximal association was reduced in BPN mice, suggesting a functional role for Agtr1-P2ry6 complexes in the hypertensive phenotype. Intriguingly, BPN mice were resistant to AgtII-induced HT and showed reduced P2ry6 expression in VSMCs. Altogether, results suggest that increased functional coupling between P2ry6 and Agtr1 may contribute to enhanced vascular reactivity during HT. In this regard, blocking P2ry6 could be a potential pharmacological strategy to treat HT.

Abstract

The aerospace sector is one of the many sectors in which large amounts of data are generated. Thanks to the evolution of technology, these data can be exploited in several ways to improve the operation and management of industrial processes. However, to achieve this goal, it is necessary to define architectures and data models that allow to manage and homogenise the heterogeneous data collected. In this paper, we present an Airport Digital Twin Reference Conceptualisation's and data model based on FIWARE Generic Enablers and the Next Generation Service Interfaces-Linked Data standard. Concretely, we particularise the Airport Digital Twin to improve the efficiency of flight turnaround events. The architecture proposed is validated in the Aberdeen International Airport with the aim of reducing delays in commercial flights. The implementation includes an application that shows the real state of the airport, combining two-dimensional and three-dimensional virtual reality representations of the stands, and a mobile application that helps ground operators to schedule departure and arrival flights.

Abstract

Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above $0.6\,$EeV., Comment: Minor typo in table 4 corrected

Abstract

We introduce an alternative expression for the ground state wave function of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas. Our wave function is constructed based on the occupation numbers and natural orbitals of the one-body density matrix. We demonstrate that the newly found wave function describes the ground state of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas under any external potential. By expressing the proposed wave function in the framework of second quantization, we show that the ground state of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas is a number-conserving Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state. We provide explicit expressions for the corresponding coefficients that describe the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas as a number-conserving BCS state. Additionally, the suitable form of the proposed wave function in second quantization allows us to derive the necessary expectation values to experimentally detect pairing in the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas. With this, we prove and show how to detect that the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas not only exhibits non-trivial quantum correlations but is also a paired state., Comment: 5 pages

Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". Abstract

We perform a detailed phenomenological study of high-energy neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) focused on LHC far-forward experiments such as FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC. To this aim, we parametrise the neutrino fluxes reaching these LHC far-forward experiments in terms of `neutrino PDFs' encoding their energy and rapidity dependence by means of the LHAPDF framework. We integrate these neutrino PDFs in the recently developed POWHEG-BOX-RES implementation of neutrino-induced DIS to produce predictions accurate at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the QCD coupling matched to parton showers (PS) with Pythia8. We present NLO+PS predictions for final-state distributions within the acceptance of FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC as well as for two experiments of the proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), FASER$\nu$2 and FLArE. We quantify the impact of NLO QCD corrections, of the parton showering and hadronisation settings in Pythia8, of the QED shower, and of the incoming neutrino flavour for the description of these observables, and compare our predictions with the GENIE neutrino event generator. Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. 25. Deep-Inelastic Scattering with LHC Neutrinos

Abstract

The observation of neutrinos produced in LHC collisions by the far-forward FASER and SND@LHC experiments in 2023 herald the new era of collider neutrino physics. These high-intensity forward neutrino fluxes from proton-proton LHC collisions enable novel opportunities in QCD, neutrino physics, BSM searches, and astroparticle physics. In this contribution, we briefly review the physics potential of neutrino deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) measurements at the LHC to shed light on proton and nuclear structure, both for ongoing far-forward experiments and for the proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF) to operate concurrently with the HL-LHC. We consider the reach of LHC neutrino DIS to scrutinise the mechanisms of forward hadron production and constrain QCD in the ultra-small-$x$ region. 26. Signatures of dark and baryonic structures on weakly lensed gravitational waves

Abstract

Gravitational lensing offers a powerful tool for exploring the matter distribution in the Universe. Thanks to their low frequencies and phase coherence, gravitational waves (GWs) allow for the observation of novel wave-optics features (WOFs) in lensing, inaccessible to electromagnetic signals. Combined with the existing accurate source models, lensed GWs can be used to infer the properties of gravitational lenses. The prospect is particularly compelling for space-borne detectors, where the high signal-to-noise ratio expected from massive black hole binary mergers allows WOFs to be distinguished deep into the weak lensing regime, drastically increasing the detection probability. Here, we investigate in detail the capacity of the LISA mission to detect WOFs caused by dark matter halos, galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) within them. We estimate the total optical depth to be $\lambda_{\rm tot} \sim 6 \times 10 ^{-3}$ for the loudest binaries of total mass $M_{\rm BBH} \sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$, with the dominant contribution coming from SMBHs. We also find that WOFs in low-mass binaries $M_{\rm BBH} \sim 10^4 M_{\odot}$ are more likely due to the central galaxies. Within our model of gravitational lenses, we predict $\mathcal{O}(0.1)-\mathcal{O}(1)$ weakly-lensed events to be detectable during the 5 years of LISA mission, depending on the source population models. We show that WOFs signatures are very sensitive to the properties of dark-matter halos with $M_{\rm vir}\in (10^6-10^8)M_\odot$: increasing the compactness parameter by $\sim 3$ in that range raises the detection rate by $\sim 26$. Additionally, we show that collective effects from the complex inner halo structure can further enhance detectability. This suggests that lensed GWs in LISA will be an excellent probe of dark-matter theories, baryonic and halo sub-structures., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

We applied Bayesian Optimal Experimental Design (OED) in the estimation of parameters involved in the Equilibrium Dispersive Model for chromatography with two components with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The coefficients estimated were Henry's coefficients, the total absorption capacity and the number of theoretical plates, while the design variables were the injection time and the initial concentration. The Bayesian OED algorithm is based on nested Monte Carlo estimation, which becomes computationally challenging due to the simulation time of the PDE involved in the dispersive model. This complication was relaxed by introducing a surrogate model based on Piecewise Sparse Linear Interpolation. Using the surrogate model instead the original reduces significantly the simulation time and it approximates the solution of the PDE with high degree of accuracy. The estimation of the parameters over strategical design points provided by OED reduces the uncertainty in the estimation of parameters. Additionally, the Bayesian OED methodology indicates no improvements when increasing the number of measurements in temporal nodes above a threshold value., Comment: 23 pages and 8 figures

28. Petal-X: Human-Centered Visual Explanations to Improve Cardiovascular Risk Communication

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), the leading cause of death worldwide, can be prevented in most cases through behavioral interventions. Therefore, effective communication of CVD risk and projected risk reduction by risk factor modification plays a crucial role in reducing CVD risk at the individual level. However, despite interest in refining risk estimation with improved prediction models such as SCORE2, the guidelines for presenting these risk estimations in clinical practice remained essentially unchanged in the last few years, with graphical score charts (GSCs) continuing to be one of the prevalent systems. This work describes the design and implementation of Petal-X, a novel tool to support clinician-patient shared decision-making by explaining the CVD risk contributions of different factors and facilitating what-if analysis. Petal-X relies on a novel visualization, Petal Product Plots, and a tailor-made global surrogate model of SCORE2, whose fidelity is comparable to that of the GSCs used in clinical practice. We evaluated Petal-X compared to GSCs in a controlled experiment with 88 healthcare students, all but one with experience with chronic patients. The results show that Petal-X outperforms GSC in critical tasks, such as comparing the contribution to the patient's 10-year CVD risk of each modifiable risk factor, without a significant loss of perceived transparency, trust, or intent to use. Our study provides an innovative approach to the visualization and explanation of risk in clinical practice that, due to its model-agnostic nature, could continue to support next-generation artificial intelligence risk assessment models.

Abstract

As an alternative to Kripke models, simplicial complexes are a versatile semantic primitive on which to interpret epistemic logic. Given a set of vertices, a simplicial complex is a downward closed set of subsets, called simplexes, of the vertex set. A maximal simplex is called a facet. Impure simplicial complexes represent that some agents (processes) are dead. It is known that impure simplicial complexes categorically correspond to so-called partial epistemic (Kripke) models. In this contribution, we define a notion of bisimulation to compare impure simplicial complexes and show that it has the Hennessy-Milner property. These results are for a logical language including atoms that express whether agents are alive or dead. Without these atoms no reasonable standard notion of bisimulation exists, as we amply justify by counterexamples, because such a restricted language is insufficiently expressive., Comment: Proceedings of Advances in Modal Logic 2024

Abstract

We present NNPDF4.0MC, a variant of the NNPDF4.0 set of parton distributions (PDFs) at LO, NLO and NNLO, with and without inclusion of the photon PDF, suitable for use with Monte Carlo (MC) event generators, which require PDFs to satisfy additional constraints in comparison to standard PDF sets. These requirements include PDF positivity down to a low scale $Q\sim 1$ GeV, smooth extrapolation in the very small and large $x$ regions, and numerically stable results even in extreme regions of phase space for all PDFs. We compare the NNPDF4.0MC PDFs to their baseline NNPDF4.0 counterparts, and to the NNPDF2.3LO set entering the Monash tune of the Pythia8 event generator. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

32. Stable collective charging of ultracold atoms quantum batteries

Abstract

We propose a novel quantum battery realized with a few interacting particles in a three-well system with different on-site energies, which could be realized with ultracold atom platforms. We prepare the initial state in the lowest energy well and charge the battery using a Spatial Adiabatic Passage (SAP)-based protocol, enabling the population of a higher energy well. We examine the charging under varying interaction strengths and reveal that the consideration of collective charging results in an intriguing oscillatory behavior of the final charge for finite interactions, through diabatic evolution. Our findings open a new avenue for building stable and controllable quantum batteries., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

We review recent progress in the global determination of the collinear parton distributions (PDFs) of the proton within the NNPDF framework. This progress includes NNPDF4.0 variants with QED effects and with missing higher order uncertainties (MHOUs) via the theory covariance matrix formalism, as well as PDFs based on QCD calculations at approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) accuracy. We present the combination of these theoretical developments resulting into NNPDF4.0 aN$^3$LO variants accounting for QED corrections and with a photon PDF. Abstract

Non-canonical inflammasome activation is mediated by caspase-11 in mice and caspase-4 in humans. Here the authors show that oxidized 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (oxPAPC) competes with LPS for binding to these caspases and in so doing is a negative regulator of non-canonical inflammasome activation in macrophages, but not in dendritic cells.

Abstract

The excited states of unstable $^{20}$O were investigated via $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy following the $^{19}$O$(d,p)^{20}$O reaction at 8 $A$MeV. By exploiting the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, the lifetime of the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states were firmly established. From the $\gamma$-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2$^+_2$ and 3$^+_1$ states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of $\gamma$-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab-initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab-initio approaches using chiral EFT forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. Abstract

The Photon Detection System (PDS) of the first DUNE far detector (FD1) is composed of 6000 photon detection units, named X-ARAPUCA. The detection of the prompt light pulse generated by the particle energy release in liquid argon (LAr) will complement and boost the DUNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC). It will improve the non-beam events tagging and enable at low energies the trigger and the calorimetry of the supernova neutrinos. The X-ARAPUCA unit is an assembly of several components. Its Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) depends both on the design of the assembly, on the grade of the individual components and finally on their coupling. The X-ARAPUCA PDE is one of the leading parameters for the Photon Detection System sensitivity, that in turn determines the sensitivity of the DUNE for the detection of core-collapse supernova within the galaxy and for nucleon decay searches. In this work we present the final assessment of the absolute PDE of the FD1 X-ARAPUCA baseline design, measured in two laboratories with independent methods and setups. One hundred sixty units of these X-ARAPUCA devices have been deployed in the NP04 facility at the CERN Neutrino Platform, the 1:20 scale FD1 prototype, and will be operated during the year 2024. The assessed value of the PDE is a key parameter both in the NP04 and in the DUNE analysis and reconstruction studies.

Abstract

We present SMEFiT3.0, an updated global SMEFT analysis of Higgs, top quark, and diboson production data from the LHC complemented by electroweak precision observables (EWPOs) from LEP and SLD. We consider recent inclusive and differential measurements from the LHC Run II, alongside with a novel implementation of the EWPOs based on independent calculations of the relevant EFT contributions. We estimate the impact of HL-LHC measurements on the SMEFT parameter space when added on top of SMEFiT3.0, through dedicated projections extrapolating from Run II data. We quantify the significant constraints that measurements from two proposed high-energy circular $e^+e^-$ colliders, the FCC-ee and the CEPC, would impose on both the SMEFT parameter space and on representative UV-complete models. Our analysis considers projections for the FCC-ee and the CEPC based on the latest running scenarios and includes $Z$-pole EWPOs, fermion-pair, Higgs, diboson, and top quark production, using optimal observables for both the $W^+W^-$ and the $t\bar{t}$ channels. The framework presented in this work may be extended to other future colliders and running scenarios, providing timely input to ongoing studies towards future high-energy particle physics facilities., Comment: 72 pages, 22 figures
