Abstract

Bismuth vanadate has been reported as a promising active semiconductor for visible light harvesting. However, the rapid recombination of charge carriers has limited its photocatalytic properties. As an alternative route to treat contaminated water containing cyanide ions, photoactivated BiVO4 in combination with ozone has been investigated. BiVO4 photocatalysts were synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, as well as by sol–gel, obtaining the monoclinic crystalline structure and a band gap of ~ 2.5 eV by XRD and UV–Vis DRS. The morphological analysis, elemental chemical composition, BET surface area, stability, and photoluminescence characteristics were carried out for both samples. Although the majority composition belongs to BiVO4, the presence of secondary phases was confirmed by XPS. The BiVO4 obtained by sol–gel (sol–gel BVO) exhibited superior photocatalytic performance with a lower reaction time (15 min) to oxidize free cyanide under visible-light radiation in combination with ozone. The degradation kinetics is described by pseudo-zero-order kinetics, and the rate constant (k0) of BiVO4 synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method was found to be the lower of the two. The high efficiency of the photocatalytic ozonation for the removal of free cyanide can be ascribed to a combination of two oxidation systems and the synergy of both processes. 27. A Geostatistics‐Based Tool to Characterize Spatio‐Temporal Patterns of Remotely Sensed Land Surface Temperature Fields Over the Contiguous United States.

Abstract

Surface fluxes and states can recur and remain consistent across various spatial and temporal scales, forming space‐time patterns. Quantifying and understanding the observed patterns is desirable, as they provide information about the dynamics of the processes involved. This study introduces the empirical spatio‐temporal covariance function and a corresponding parametric covariance function as tools to identify and characterize spatio‐temporal patterns in remotely sensed fields. The method is demonstrated using 2 km hourly GOES‐16/17 land surface temperature (LST) data over the Contiguous United States by splitting the area into 1.0° × 1.0° domains. The summer day‐time LST ESTCFs for 2018 to 2022 are derived for each domain, and a parametric covariance model is fitted. Clustering analysis is applied to detect areas with similar spatio‐temporal LST patterns. Six main zones within CONUS are identified and characterized based on their variance and temporal and spatial characteristic length scales (i.e., scales for which the temperature variations are temporally and spatially related), respectively: (a) Eastern plains with 3 K2, ∼6 hr, and 0.15°, (b) Gulf of California with 60 K2, ∼8 hr, and 0.34°, (c) mountains and coasts transition 1 with 16 K2, ∼11 hr, and 0.25°, (d) central US, Midwest, and South cities with 5.5 K2, ∼8 hr, and ∼0.2°, (e) mountains and coasts transition 2 with ∼10 K2, ∼8 hr, and 0.2°, and (f) largest mountains and coastlines with ∼19 K2, ∼13 hr, and 0.3°. The tools introduced provide a pathway to formally identify and summarize the spatio‐temporal patterns observed in remotely sensed fields and relate those to more complex processes within the Soil‐Vegetation‐Atmosphere System. Plain Language Summary: Specific processes on Earth's surface, like heat and water fluxes and air movement, often exhibit coherent patterns across space and time. Figuring out where these patterns occur can be helpful as they can aid to explain how the underlying physical processes work. This research introduces a new tool to find and describe these patterns and applies it to temperature data derived from satellites. The United States is divided into smaller areas, and the developed tool is used to analyze the land temperature data within those areas; then, regions with similar temperature patterns are identified. These results help to determine that certain landscape features, like coastlines, mountains, and cities, influence how temperature patterns behave in space, time and both. These tools help us to recognize and describe the patterns we see in satellite observations and ultimately, connect them to more complicated processes happening in the Soil‐Vegetation‐Atmosphere System. Abstract

Many bacteria have the ability to survive in challenging environments; however, they cannot all grow on standard culture media, a phenomenon known as the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state. Bacteria commonly enter the VBNC state under nutrient-poor environments or under stressful conditions. This review explores the concept of the VBNC state, providing insights into the beneficial bacteria known to employ this strategy. The investigation covers different chemical and physical factors that can induce the latency state, cell features, and gene expression observed in cells in the VBNC state. The review also covers the significance and applications of beneficial bacteria, methods of evaluating bacterial viability, the ability of bacteria to persist in environments associated with higher organisms, and the factors that facilitate the return to the culturable state. Knowledge about beneficial bacteria capable of entering the VBNC state remains limited; however, beneficial bacteria in this state could face adverse environmental conditions and return to a culturable state when the conditions become suitable and continue to exert their beneficial effects. Likewise, this unique feature positions them as potential candidates for healthcare applications, such as the use of probiotic bacteria to enhance human health, applications in industrial microbiology for the production of prebiotics and functional foods, and in the beer and wine industry. Moreover, their use in formulations to increase crop yields and for bacterial bioremediation offers an alternative pathway to harness their beneficial attributes.

37. Robust Axonal Regeneration Occurs in the Injured CAST/Ei Mouse CNS

Abstract

Axon regeneration in the CNS requires reactivating injured neurons' intrinsic growth state and enabling growth in an inhibitory environment. Using an inbred mouse neuronal phenotypic screen, we find that CAST/Ei mouse adult dorsal root ganglion neurons extend axons more on CNS myelin than the other eight strains tested, especially when pre-injured. Injury-primed CAST/Ei neurons also regenerate markedly in the spinal cord and optic nerve more than those from C57BL/6 mice and show greater sprouting following ischemic stroke. Heritability estimates indicate that extended growth in CAST/Ei neurons on myelin is genetically determined, and two whole-genome expression screens yield the Activin transcript Inhba as most correlated with this ability. Inhibition of Activin signaling in CAST/Ei mice diminishes their CNS regenerative capacity, whereas its activation in C57BL/6 animals boosts regeneration. This screen demonstrates that mammalian CNS regeneration can occur and reveals a molecular pathway that contributes to this ability. Omura et al. screened for neuronal growth on myelin and find CAST/Ei inbred mice are uniquely able to regenerate axons in the injured CNS through Activin signaling. Enhancing Activin signaling confers a CNS-regenerative capacity in normally non-regenerative mouse strains.
