Abstract

Objective: There is considerable evidence that the amplitude of the heritable P300 event-related potential (ERP) is reduced in alcoholics and their alcohol-naive children. Low voltage alpha (LVA), a heritable resting electroencephalogram (EEG) trait present in 7-14% of the population, has been shown to be associated with alcoholism and anxiety disorders. A few studies have demonstrated a modest correlation between pre-stimulus alpha power and P300 amplitude. We aimed to test this finding in community volunteers, hypothesizing that LVA would be associated with low P300 amplitude. Method: Digitized resting EEG was recorded at the central parietal site (Pz) from 85 male and 113 female community volunteers (120 unrelated). ERPs were elicited at Pz by auditory and visual oddball paradigms. All participants were interviewed with the Schedule for Affective Disorders, Lifetime Version (SADS-L) and assigned blind-rated psychiatric diagnoses according to the American Psychiatric Association DSM-III-R criteria. Results: LVA participants (including alcoholics and nonalcoholics) had significantly lower auditory and visual P300 amplitudes. Absolute alpha power was modestly correlated with auditory and visual P300 amplitude and was associated with 9.4% and 4.6% of the variance, respectively. Conclusions: The association between LVA and low P300 amplitude, two distinct electrophysiological traits, suggests that, at least in individuals with the LVA trait, some aspects of resting, unstimulated brain activity and activated brain function in the form of attentional response may be fundamentally related., IT HAS BEEN PROPOSED that both the P300 event related potential (ERP) and low voltage alpha (LVA) resting electroencephalogram (EEG) are intermediate phenotypes for alcoholism (Enoch et al., 1999; Porjesz [...]

Abstract

Human brain oscillations represent important features of information processing and are highly heritable. A common feature of beta oscillations (13-28 Hz) is the critical involvement of networks of inhibitory interneurons as pacemakers, gated by [gamma]-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) action. Advances in molecular and statistical genetics permit examination of quantitative traits such as the beta frequency of the human electroencephalogram in conjunction with DNA markers. We report a significant linkage and linkage disequilibrium between beta frequency and a set of GABAA receptor genes. Uncovering the genes influencing brain oscillations provides a better understanding of the neural function involved in information processing.

Abstract

System dynamics models are often created using multiple streams of information including quantitative data, written records, and information contained in the mental models of both individuals and groups. While qualitative sources of information are widely recognized as important in all stages of the model-building process, little systematic research has been completed on how best to elicit and map this knowledge from groups of experts. In this article, we survey the existing literature on mapping and eliciting knowledge for system dynamics modeling and also explore the literature in the broader fields of cognitive psychology and small group processes. Special attention is paid to new software advances to support these processes. Two case studies illustrate how these knowledge-eliciting techniques can be used to support the construction of computer simulation models. Keywords: Computer supported cooperative work; group facilitation; group decision support systems; knowledge elicitation; system dynamics; mental models, The creation of system dynamics models depends on information gathering, analysis of possible courses of action and assessment of all factors involved in management decision making. Although available decision support software packages are helpful, guidelines are necessary for better structuring of the knowledge elicitation process. Five key factors are discussed to help modelers manage the knowledge elicitation process more effectively. Examples on modeling Dutch Health Care and medical malpractice insurance decision conferences are presented. Systematic research is recommended for more organized and effective model-building for group decision support systems.
