Major issues in the area of transportation and/or storage of radioactive materials are reliability and safety of engineering components. Among the functions to be undertaken, transportation and storage systems shall allow the criticality control of the transported matter, the control of its temperature, as well as the capacity to withstand the mechanical stresses due to normal, incidental and accidental conditions of use. In most cases, criticality control requires the use of an internal arrangement made of a neutron absorber material, which must also have high thermal conductivity properties to ensure the temperature control. When, as in many AREVA-TN International applications, the design takes credit of the neutron absorber material as a structural component, it must show high mechanical performance. Alcan's Al-B4C metal matrix composites (Al-B4C MMCs) meet all the above mentioned requirements, due to their special capability of capturing neutrons, their light weight, and their superior thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. The significant advantage of Alcan's technology is its flexibility with regards to a wide range of boron carbide contents and matrix alloys (from AA1XXX to AA6XXX). This enables the adjustment of the properties to the exact needs of the design. TN International presently uses extruded and/or rolled Al-B4C MMC parts in several of its internal arrangements. The present paper gives an overview of the manufacture processes of Alcan's Al-B4C MMCs, from the mixing of B4C into liquid aluminium to the extrusion and rolling operations. It describes the methods and results for the qualification tests in terms of the neutron absorption, thermal, physical and mechanical properties of the material. Finally, details are given on the use of Alcan's MMCs as a neutron absorber with enough credit for structural material in TN International's TN24 designs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The red/green cyanobacteriochrome (CBCR) slr1393g3 exhibits a quantum yield of only 8 % for its forward photoconversion, significantly lower than other species from the same CBCR subfamily. The cause for this reduced photoconversion is not yet clear, although in the related NpR6012g4 dark-state structural heterogeneity of a paramount Trp residue has been proposed to cause the formation of nonproductive subpopulation. However, there is no such information on the equivalent residue in slr1393g3, W496. Here we use solid-state NMR to explore all possible sidechain rotamers of this Trp residue and their local interactions at the atomic level. The indole nitrogen (Nϵ1) is used as an NMR probe, achieved by site-specific 15 N-indole labeling of a quadruply Trp-deleted variant and trehalose vitrification technique. The data reveal a set of seven indole rotamers of W496 with four distinct environments for the Nϵ1-H group. Only a minority population of 20 % is found to retain the π-stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions with the chromophore in the dark state that has been assigned to account for complete forward photoconversion. Introduction: Quality of life (QoL) of comorbid patients with pulmonary malignancies is a key issue in considering fractionated stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) indication. This study investigates the early impact of SBRT on QoL., Methods: One hundred patients with pulmonary lesions were treated with SBRT from February 2011 to December 2014 within the prospective, monocenter, phase II STRIPE trial. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core module (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the QLQ-LC13 lung cancer-specific questionnaire were used to evaluate QoL before, 2 and 7 weeks after SBRT, then every 3 months for 2 years. We report on the analysis of early changes from baseline to 7-week follow-up exam. Impact of patient- and treatment-related factors on the change in QoL was analyzed., Results: QoL was assessed in 97 patients; compliance was 92% and 85% at baseline and 7 weeks after SBRT, respectively. No clinically relevant changes greater than or equal to 10 in the QoL/global health status (GHS), function scores and inquired symptoms were observed. Patients with baseline QoL below the median showed clinically relevant improvement in QoL/GHS (Δ16.7 ± 25.3, p = 0.003), emotional function (Δ14.4 ± 25.4, p = 0.013), and fatigue (Δ -10.1 ± 26.5, p = 0.089) in contrast to patients with high initial scores. No changes were observed in the dichotomized subgroups of initial Karnofsky index, Charlson Comorbidity Index, age, diagnosis, and tumor localization., Conclusions: In short-term follow-up, QoL is well maintained after pulmonary SBRT. This paper focuses on the fretting fatigue behaviour of pin-loaded carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) straps studied as models for rigging systems in sailing yachts, for suspenders of arch bridges and for pendent cables in cranes. Eight straps were subjected to an ultimate tensile strength test. In total, 26 straps were subjected to a fretting fatigue test, of which ten did not fail. An S⁻N curve was generated for a load ratio R of 0.1 and a frequency f of 10 Hz, showing a fatigue limit stress of the straps around the matrix fatigue limit, corresponding to 46% of the straps' ultimate tensile strength (σ UTS ). The fatigue limit was defined as 3 million load cycles ( N = 3 × 10⁶), but tests were even conducted up to N = 11.09 × 10⁶. Catastrophic failure of the straps was initiated in their vertex areas. Investigations on the residual strength and stiffness properties of straps tested around the fatigue limit stress (for N ≥ 1 × 10⁶) showed little influence of the fatigue loading on these properties. Quasi-static finite element analyses (FEA) were conducted. The results obtained from the FEA are in good agreement with the experiments and demonstrate a fibre parallel stress concentration in the vertex area of factor 1.3, under the realistic assumption of a coefficient of friction ( cof ) between pin and strap of 0.5.
